I received a postcard from my regular vet saying my dog "Moonshine" was due for her annual exam. I had been wanting to try Banfield because I use Petsmart for all my grooming and boarding needs and it would be so convenient. Plus I had heard the prices were really good. I called my regular vet to get price quotes for Bordetella ($19) , a fecal test ($32) and an office visit ($52). The rates were comparable, but since Banfield had "clinic hours" I could save myself the $52 office visit. So far so good.

When I got to Banfield (Brea, CA store) I was second in line to see the doctor. After a while, I noticed that people were being pulled ahead of me. I decided to speak up and was immediately given a room. The room was dirty. There was dog fur and some type of liquid (urine or drool) on the table. Before the employee left the room (I think her name was Annie) she asked me about my visit. I told her why I was there (annual visit) and that I had a question about a small bump on Moonshine's back. She said if I had any questions, I would have to pay the office visit fee of $40. I explained that when I called to ask about the charges, I was told my pet would receive her shots and the doctor would give her a "once over". She disagreed, but went to check with the doctor. She came back to tell me it would be okay to "ask" about the bump, but if any tests had to be run I would have to pay for that. I was fine with that. After she left, I decided to clean the table myself and ask what the procedure was for cleaning tables between patients.

The next nurse (attractive blond with her hair in a ponytail) immediately went to investigate who had put me into a dirty room. She apologized and proceeded to ask me questions about my pet. She showed me an estimate of the costs ($71.00) and said the doctor would be in soon. She performed the fecal test and was gone. The doctor came in and gave my dog the Bordetella and he told me her fecal test had come back clean. Then he said he wanted to treat her for worms anyway because some of them are microscopic. I said okay because it was included in the estimate. When I left to pay the bill, it was now up to $124.00. They said that the doctor had recommended a different "worm" medication than the one included in the estimate. They also said there is a $10 "collection" fee and a $5 "disposal" fee included with the fecal test. This now brings your fecal test (with it's hidden charges that nobody tells you about, even when you ask) to $44. I would have been better off going to my regular vet and from now on I WILL!

I just wanted to let you know how "first time" customers are treated. I ended up declining the de-worming medication, They also recommended a teeth cleaning at $200 which I will do, but not at Banfield.
