My son underwent a painful, jaw realignment surgery by Dr. Christian Loetscher at Atlanta Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The procedure creates complicated emotional, as well as physical, issues (e.g., changes in facial features that make patients feel somewhat traumatized when they first look at themselves in a mirror) It was a very stressful time for our family. Post surgery, my son's face was swollen to unbelievable proportions, which was very painful. Then, as the most obvious swelling subsided, the "new look" began to emerge. There were weeks when it was difficult to tell if my son's features were fully revealed ( and he wasn't happy with the outcome) or whether there was residual swelling that was slightly deforming his face. Time proved that swelling was still deforming his face and he was ultimately happy with the results of surgery. What pulled me through the ordeal was the compassion and caring showed by Dr. Loetscher and his whole staff. I was called on a regular basis to check on my son's physical and emotional progress. Also, pre- and post-surgery, I had to deal with horrendous insurance problems. The insurance coordinator was the most tenacious advocate I have ever dealt with. She put hours and hours of effort into resolving stupid insurance roadblocks. If you put yourself into the hands of this group, you will have all of your needs met with expertise and compassion.
