My wife and I went here Saturday night for dinner before going to the movies down the street. We'd been several years earlier but this was the first time back trying out the new chef. Definitely had a nice time and enjoyed the food and ambiance. We sat upstairs where it was busy but private enough for good conversation. Ordered a bunch of different things and shared. Small caesar salad was big enough for us to split. We each had a "cup" of the crab n' beer soup which is actually bowl sized. It's really tasty - just be forewarned that there is only a dollop of crabmeat on the crostini and the rest is soup. Good but not like a chowder. (Must be why they called it "soup"). We shared the Fresh Pan Roasted Australian Sea Bass with artichoke and cannelini beans in a pesto broth. That was really good - we inhaled it. Wish we had stuck around for dessert because on the way out I passed a waiter carrying the beignets, which looked like heaven. I'd definitely go back.

Decent place to go once a year, but food not good enough to make me a regular. It is close to the movie theater though, so a good option for before/after the movies.

I have tried so hard to like Kingfish and after the last time I went there I don't think I'll go back to eat again. The drinks are GREAT, I have never had a bad drink from there but the food is just... ok. I have ordered a variety of things and nothing has been that great or anything I'm dying to taste again. Last time we went the fish was undercooked and they ended up not charging us for the meal which was nice but I think I'd rather go to the pizza place around the corner than Kingfish. But for drinks I would say go for it! Great location as well!

This place was actually just redone and it looks amazing inside, the bar is kind of hidden though. But their dishes are amazing they just take you through the new orleans style. With cajun and seafoods. Its amazing, I loved it there, they do have oysters and some nights live music but make sure you get there early on a friday or saturday night because they will be packed.

+ prime rib;
i was starving by the time we went out for a late company lunch; i ordered a medium rare for the prime rib. for the life of me, i couldn't figure out why i wasn't scarfing this dish down.

my co-worker kindly pointed out that they provided me with a well done steak. the waiter was kind enough to quickly remedy the problem and i was downing their succulent steak in no time.

+ lobster (uber, fantabulous!)
i was nicely treated to a bit of lobster while awaiting my new and improved steak that was in the works. this was the best lobster tail i ever had. mmmm...

Talk about a DISSAPOINTMENT!!!!! I recently had dinner this past weekend on Friday! The restaurant was not even busy when I was seated upstairs. I was greeted by a young short girl who happened to be my server. I never would have guessed because after the initial greeting we weren't attended for 15 minutes. The server must have passed our table over 4 - 5 times before we were able to put in our order. The table we were seated at was right next to a area where servers put in the orders on a computer. The professionalism there is below zero. My mother and I heard numerous times foul language and sexual comments many times between KIngfish staff. This made me disgusted and was actually recommended to dine here by a friend. The food quality is not generous for the price you pay and neither is it exceptional as I expected. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NEVER EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! POOR SERVICE AND UNPLEASENT ENVIRONMENT!! I WOULD CONSIDER THIS PLACE LOW CLASS!!!! If there were negative star ratings, this place deserves a NEGATIVE 5-star rating. Avoid at all costs!!!

New Orleans style fresh seafood was great. I enjoyed the Fire grill Ono and my husband had the Salmon. We tried the oysters for appetizer and a salad. Everything was wonderful from the food to the friendly staff. Great bar w/ specialty drinks.

I love Kingfish in san mateo, It's in a prime location w/plenty of parking. There's an oyster bar downstairs & plenty of tables & private rooms for larger parties. The food is awesome, the portions are huge! There's something on the menu for everyone.

Although the food was average - the customer service received from the manager/ owner was just bottom line RUDE. My family and I were dining and I wanted to change my 1.5 year old son's soiled diaper. There was not changing table available so I then spoke to the manager/ owner to see if he could accomodate us (we were in the middle of dining). He actually suggested I change my son a shelf located in the women's bathroom - ABSOLUTELY NOT - after literally arguing with him - he finally put two chairs together in a private dining room. Should you dine at this facility and should need to change your infant/ toddler - BEWARE of the challenges you may receive from the manager/ owner.

My roommate and I went this past saturday night. No tables were available, so we went up to the second floor and sat at the bar. It took about 10 minutes to even get the bartenders attention. Once our drinks were done, we were seated in the upstairs dining area, but since all we got was really slow service upstairs, we decided to find a seat at the downstairs bar. We sat there for (I kid you not) 15 minutes, and no one came over to take a drink or dinner order. The bartender did not even acknowledge us. It wasn't even that busy!!!!! We left immediately after. So could I recommend this place to you....? Yeah, if you like sitting around with no drink and no food....

Since new owners have taken over Kingfish, it's not the same consistent, good experience it once was. They've removed/changed signature dishes that are not close to being as good as they once were--the signature cabbage salad is now boring and tasteless where it once was a taste explosions in the mouth.
Our group agreed that they must have made changes to cut costs, but it's certainly not at the level it used to be.....and that's not even talking about the service. We were on a bit of a tight schedule, and while our food arrived quickly, it took 4 turns to the table to bring everyone's cocktail...and there were only 4 of us!
Sadly, it is no longer one of the top destinations on the Northern Peninsula

Great food and great service! I recommend making reservations because this place gets pretty crowded. Great place for family dinners or a night out w/ friends. Try the Cosmo, you won't regret it, but save room for dessert. To die for!

A group of 25 friends and I had a party at Kingfish and it was the coolest experience ever! We had the area upstairs by the bar and we were in heaven. My friends were thrilled on the excellent looking bartenders that shook drinks as if they were in a Miami hotspot! I love Miami! Anyways, I've never took the time to write one of these but, I'm telling you it was so worth it, I had to. Great fun, delicious food, friendly staff, and very accomodating managers. Get some oysters and one of their Mojito martinis and you'll be in love!

We have dined here regularly since the opening. We have to say that this place gets better with time ! The menu is incredible, I can find anything no matter what I am craving. I especially enjoy oysters - and they are great here. My husbands goes right for the steak and we have never had a complaint. Friendly servers without being annoying. Love Kingfish!

No place can even compare to Kingfish on the peninsula. It is the ultimate pro & fun restaurant! My husband and I are regular "city" diners are were shocked when we were down in San Mateo visiting friends to see such a class act outside SF. Service was unbelievably effiecient, friendly, and best of all unpretentious. The food was terrific, I had the Niman Ranch Pork chop and my husband had the Maple leaf duck with a blood orange brown butter sauce that would rival Boulevard!!! Yes, I said it. The best thing of all were the prices. For the quality, you cannot even compare, they were far more reasonable than most places serving this type of cuisine. The winelist was quite hip. Ok, I have to say to the staff, management, ownership that they have it going on. Keep it up and you will be NATIONALLY known.

If you like going out to eat and trying new things, go somewhere else. Had a few friends with us. The owners need to take a class on owning it seems. All the chef's were arguing with each other. The server had to keep explaining to us that our food would be late (about 45 minutes) and it wasn't even busy!!! Seems like theres no structure anywhere. I would never come back. The sauce for the tuna was watery. Meat over cooked, maybe even boiled to temperature. The sushi rice was too hard. the only good thing about this place is the alcohol. Other than that, yarghhh!!!

Their catch phrase is to "eat like a king, drink like a fish" and maybe the food is good if you are drinking. I don't drink and found the food to be uninteresting and not worth the money. I also got the signature beignets dessert and was disappointed by it as well. Nowhere near the quality and taste of Cafe du Monde's beignets in Atlanta or New Orleans, but then again, what is?

PROS: lots of drinks? downtown location
CONS: food leaves a lot to be desired

My brother went to Tulane and though I only went to visit once, the food made a lasting impression. I'm not talented or inspired enough to make my own beignets and it's not like Krispy Kreme carries them, so I love indulging here. But don't forget to try the bread pudding, which is awesome. The menu is large, so even the pickiest eaters in your group will find something. Last time here, I had the skirt steak and while it's not a unique menu item, they do it well. Of course, after a few Hurricanes, who can tell?

My girlfriend and I went during a trip to my hometown. We live in NYC and always look forward to dining in the bay area.

We went for lunch. The oysters were great; far less can be said about the shucking. They were filled with shards of shell. The Tartare was high-grade tuna, but bland. The mussels deserve their own paragraph...

A culinary nightmare! Half of the platter had not even opened. The rest were so obtrusively large and dry that the two we tried had to be spit into a napkin. They were appropriately removed from the check.

Service lackadaisical at best. We wont get into the wine disaster.

Our meal was enjoyable for a laugh's sake. All in all, money wasted. As my girlfriend said, "What a waste of good ingredients."

I went in with a large party. The server seemed rushed all the time. I selected a wine, which I didn't care for much and was told that it was highly rated - as if my own taste couldn't tell me what I liked. I told the server ahead of time that we had two more quest arriving - which he didn't plan for even when the tables arround us became available.

The food was good. My brother got the lobster - it was juicy and tasty. I had the skirt steak. There is a flavoring they add to it they I like. The value on the rest of the items wasn't so great, like the spring rolls.

Only one restroom upstairs. You have to wait a while.

The food was amazing - rich and flavorful. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. While it was not outright bad, it was extremely mediocore. I had heard about this from friends as well, but wanted to give the place a chance. I am not sure I would come back to the San Mateo one. Perhaps the SF one will have better service?

My dining experience at Kingfish was very poor. Our table was so dimly lit, we could barely see our food. I ordered the "Vietnamese Gulf Shrimp Rolls" and received a single roll, cut in half. It was hard and cold and had obviously been in the fridge for a very long time. The steaks tasted fine except they were covered in a strange sweetish BBQ sauce that detracted from the taste of the meat. The plates looked really unappealing when they arrived - piece of meat on one side, starch on the other. Our server tended to disappear and seemed stressed and in a hurry.

Hubby & I were very impressed with the decor at Kingfish. We had a couple of drinks at the bar, and hubby said that the $3 he paid for a Coors Light was relatively cheap.

The food, however, was overpriced. I ordered the filet & lobster tail which was pretty good, but definitely not worth the $37 I paid for it. Hubby had the seared tuna which was tasty, but expensive.

Don't get me wrong, the food was fine, just not worth the $ we paid for it. If you don't mind paying a premium to eat at a trendy place with only average food, this is the place for you. We prefer eating tasty meals at cheaper joints, even if they don't look as nice.

I've been to Kingfish many, many times and I keep going back because they have great food. However, the service is downright bad, so don't expect much in that category. I enjoy dining at a nice restaurant and taking my time, especially with family/friends. Kingfish is in no hurry at all to seat you, take your order, serve you, or take your money! Everything is very, very slow, but if you are with friends and have had a few drinks, this probably won't matter to you. The last time I was there the waiter suggested we order an appetizer because the food "could take a long time". He made no apologies for it either. So, if you are a stickler for decent service, then I would bypass Kingfish. If you aren't and like good food and atmosphere, then this restaurant would work for you.

Upon reading the first few reviews, I had grave concerns going into this restaurant. However, it was not as bad as written. Service and food were average. The etoufee was OK. Not sure if I am correct in my assessment, but the etoufee I had in New Orleans (as explained by the server out there) was not tomato based like the one that I had at this restaurant. Prices were moderate. The only thing that I can say about the menu is that it is very, very eclectic.

After looking at their wonderful menu online, I must say that we were disappointed with King Fish. While their selection and descriptions were fantastic, the execution fell far below our expectations. The "best mussels this side of the 92" was just flat out terrible as we had some spoiled mussels in the bunch. The etouffe was bland, and both the filet and the porterhouse pork chops were dry. What saved our dinner was the spectacular service.

Cons: food, food, food

Last time I was at Kingfish, service was not that good. While still needing work, it has improved. The waiters seem more attentive now to diners than before. The atmosphere continues to be warm and friendly, with all the right touches of low lighting and decorative prints on the walls. The food also excels. We had the special Valentine's Day menu. The filet mignon was tender and juicy, cooked just as I ordered. The chocolate cake topped with Bing cherries and in a cherry sauce was heavenly. With downtown San Mateo on the rebound because of the new movie theatre, Kingfish is primed to take front seat to that...as long as the service continues to get better.

Pros: Atomsphere, Food, Lot of Seating

Cons: Spotty service, Expensive

Food was great here (skirt steak, beignets, crawfish etoufee) but the service needs major improvement. There are 3 levels to be seated on. I asked the host for a quiet table and he put me in the basement, which had that subterranean, no direct sunlight type of feel. Things were "quiet" until halfway into our meal. A not-so-good live band started playing. You would think the host would know that they booked a live band in the basement. Our waitress was also spacey.

Perhaps it was the holidays, or maybe because the kitchen was short staffed, but I have never spent close to 4 hours in a restaurant with such poor service. Not only was the service slow, the waiter could not get our orders straight.
First of all, a medium rare steak for burnt for the birthday boy. Then I was given sirloin when I ordered ribeye.
Another person had to watch the rest of us eat while he was told his dish fell to the floor. While the party next to us were also celebrity a birthday, only thing to end the night was a overcharged, bill with items from other parties.

I do not recommend this place when it's busy. Only you'll receive will be cold bread, poor service, and no chef specials.

This restaurant has a great atmosphere and the food was wonderful. The service was the worst I have had in a long long time! Our waiter only came to our table about 3 times the whole night, we waited and waited for everything. One meal was forgotten and we could not even flag anyone down to inquire on it. If they can get the service down it would be a wonderful place to go. Great place to take a date.

Solid food, good atmosphere, and great desserts (beignets!), but the service was EXTREMELY slow. They really need to fix this!

Great ambience, like being in an offbeat SF restaurant, and not horrible expensive (2 people w/ wine = under $100). The dishes are mostly hits (best = scallops, teriyaki skirt steak, halibut + the excellent ahi wonton appetizer), and few misses (all off the menu now). Solid wine list (quite extensive, w/ plenty of budget selections). Can be noisy; service can be slow, but who cares?

Are all "10" reviews bogus? It sure seems that way. "Great place to take a crowd of 50 for a corporate lunch or birthday! Everything was superb! Service was great, and I'm not the busboy. Really I'm not! I don't know what that guy who gave us a 3 was talking about, the hairs in his creamed corn were appetizers! Nothing specific to Kingfish, but it gets tiresome wading through uninformative reviews.

This place was a bit of a surprise, it had great decor, nice waiters, even if she did get confused by our numerous orders, but overall the experience was good...food, service, ambience and prices.

This is a really neat place. Good for having a nice long conversation over dessert and coffee. Dinner was good but service was extremely slow. We went on a Monday night at 7 (not crowded) and didn't get out until 9! Most of the time was waiting for food. The oysters are fresh. Skirt steak and salmon were yummy.

The food was very good. Nice raw bar selection. Very satisfied with everything that was ordered. The only thing is that our server was a little flakey. Nice, but flakey. Twice in the very beginning of the meal, she got my order wrong. She was very nice about it and offered to amend everything right away.

Very slow service. Food was disappointing and portions were small. Atmosphere was pretty neat. Would not recommend this restaurant.

We had high hopes but were quite disappointed. The dinner menu (on a Saturday night, no less) was very limited and there were no specials...while the food was fairly good there is so little variety in the menu I can't see going back.

The service was simultaneously good AND bad...our waitress was inattentive and seemed to have better things to do, but luckily an army of bus staff and servers do most of the actual work.
