One of the best toy stores around. When we're looking for something special, that's where we go. I always feel proud when I give a Tree Town toy as a gift, for instance. I think it shows I cared.

We love Tree Town Toys! The staff is so knowledgeable and HONEST about the toys. When inquiring about a toy for a 2 year old I was directed away form a more expensive toy to something more appropriate. THAT is what keeps me coming back. I try to buy all the kids gifts/toys I need at Tree Town. I like supporting a local business and I like the philosophy.

Regarding the Tree Town Toys and http://healthytoys.org - Tree Town Toys invited the Ecology Center into the store and gave them complete, 100% access over many days to the inventory, opened any package the Ecology Center wanted to test, and continues to work with the Ecology Center supporting their mission to provide the safest possible toys to all of our kids. Tree Town Toys opened its doors to open and independent testing - something that no big box store to date has allowed.

Hundreds of toys were tested, and the Tree Town Toys staff and the Ecology Center found 2 lines that had issues. One was a line of lunchboxes by Tyrell-Katz, and Tree Town Toys immediately contacted the manufacturer about the issue. They also immediately pulled the line from all of their sales channels. Further extensive testing of the product revealed that the hazardous chemicals were not soluble - meaning that they would not come out of the product, even if consumed and digested. That would be quite a trick with a lunchbox. However, Tree Town Toys still dropped the entire line and do not carry those products any longer.

The other product (the Tatiri toothbrush holder) tested fine except for a single screw holding in a washer, which tested positive. Not only would this screw not come into contact with a child during normal use, but that was the only part of the product that had any substances of concern. That said, Tree Town Toys also immediately pulled the product and no longer sells it.

Tree Town Toys does not manufacture the toys they sell, and as a family owned toy store with two small children, they simply will not sell any toys that they believe are dangerous at all. This is precisely why they invited the Ecology Center into the store, and why they exposed themselves to possible scrutiny. The owners have aggressively campaigned for toy safety, are part of the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association, work with the Toy Industry Association, and even testified about toy safety issues encouraging stronger safety regulations to both the Michigan Senate and the House. They have also campaigned at the Federal level to significantly strengthen the children's product safety standards for the entire country, to set a global benchmark for acceptable chemical content, and to empower the CPSC to better regulate hazardous substances in products that come in contact with children.

You are encouraged to make up your own mind, just as the negative reviewer said. Clearly, there is more to the picture than meets the eye here. Tree Town Toys has and continues to go above and beyond what you will find in any big-box store, does not sell the mass-manufactured stuff that is at the core of all the safety issues, and will not sell any product that is hazardous. The negative reviewer makes a great point - be careful. And be careful EVERYWHERE that you purchase children's products.

When White Rabbit Toys closed, we thought that we would be forced to shop at the big box stores. We were SO glad to have Tree Town Toys move into our town. Their selection is better and they even have games for mom and dad!

Happy shopper in Ann Arbor!
