Oh! A New Store Across from Mama's...

by Ben B.

While waiting in line at Mama's for brunch, I looked over and found a gem across the street. You know how it is -- waiting in line for 2 hours to get eggs benedict, so your mind starts to wonder... Oh, a new store! Well, we have another 30 minutes to kill, so let's get this guy behind us to hold our spot while we poke around.

The store across Stockton street is Pelote. It doesn't look like the typical North Beach tourist trap. Rather, it looks like a simple yet elegant boutique. We almost didn't notice it except for the beautiful big window in front -- kind of like reading the fine print on Stockton street.

So, we walked in and were amazed at the elegant products. Italian tableware (Arte Italica), French soaps (Savon de Marseille), and fantastic linens (Forza & Casa) -- just to name a few.

My girlfriend's sister is about to get married, so I was thinking ummm.... Jackpot? Not only do they have all of the nice imported products, but they have custom embroidery and monogramming on things like bath towels and bath robes (Fellas -- get that lounging robe you always wanted).

We met the owners through a new friend of ours -- their child. Enzo, who is not quite old enough to drive (or walk), has a very important role in the business: he walks from behind the curtain and charms customers, like me and my girlfriend. We laughed about Enzo's charm with his parents, E.J. and April.

E.J. and April (and Enzo) went out of their way to help us find products for wedding presents. Although we haven't decided whether or not we are going to buy the bath robes or the set of Forza & Casa towels, we know we are going to get a fine product and some great ideas at Pelote.

So stop in if you get the chance. Be sure to ask for Enzo.
