This exhibition is one of the first at a new gallery established in new offices of Cunningham Realty at 50 Broadway in Hawthorne, NY.

Patti Cunningham, president of this long-established Westchester company, comments on her decision to use the space as a gallery:..."as our clients want spaces which reflect their values, we wanted an office suite which reflects ours. Art embraces our lives, stimulates our minds and can bring out the best in people.....Using our more than 150 running feet of wall space as a gallery helps artists, enriches the community and provides a stimulating space for our clients and other visitors."

David Tobey, the artist exhibiting in the one-man show opening with a party the evening of June 19th to which everyone is invited, that features not only the artwork but entertainment by the Kirk Ehrenreich Duo and refreshments by well-known Antonees, is the son of the well-known Westchester muralist and illustrator Alton S. Tobey, who is best known here for his mural "Roots of Westchester" at the County Court House in White Plains. But the younger Tobey's work is quite different from his late father's realistic images of historical figures in the murals and in the illustrations his father had published for LIFE magazine, The Golden Books History of The United States and dozens of other books and magazines.

Dealing in abstract forms with figurative ramifications, David Tobey's work in sculpture has a dynamic energy that has been compared to the sculpture of Julio Gonzalez; "achiev[ing] a unique draughtsmanly fluidity in metal, surpassing even that of Gonzalez" and for his large acrylic paintings he has been described as "a sumptuous colorist, combining brilliant hues in both painting and music."

.Indeed, some of Tobey's most recent modern paintings, such as "David and Goliath" and a few others in this exhibition, exhibit the distinct influence of his father, with whom he first started studying art at an early age, since they are in many respects developments and refinements of his father's modern "Curvilinear" style, a school of painting that was founded by Alton Tobey in the 1940's.

Hopefully what appears to be the success of Cunningham's contribution of her private business space will encourage other businesses in the community to follow her lead and provide even more venues for artists from our community.
