Terrible experience. I'm not a difficult customer, but considering the experience I had last night, I recommend you avoid this place at all cost. Plenty of respectful and good bars in New York. Absolutely no reason to waste your money

Pros: Decent Music

Cons: Weak Drinks, The Rudest Bartender I Have Ever Met

This bar is just full of surprises! We came in on a Saturday night with crazy rain and wind so it was kind of empty. But they have two rooms and we were at the room in the back where there are booths, dance floor and a live DJ spinning

Pros: Bartenders

Cons: Too Crowded, Bouncers act like gods

This place can have an odd feel, depending on the crowd, and the prices are high, so don't be surprised, but it's a decent place to hang out and enjoy a drink or two with a friend.

Enjoyed the atmosphere at Opal. Was on vacation and looking for a friendly neighborhood bar. This was perfect. The food was great and the service was fast and friendly. The drink specials were excellent. We loved all the TVs. We were able to watch several college football games all at one time.

it just seemed like the typical midtown bar...crowd was young urban professional acting as they would in college. really crowded also, it was hard to get outside for a smoke. on the flipside, the dj was playing good stuff, the kind of thing that gets you moving and the staff was really chill as well. there were wayyy too many guys, and for some reason, they did not seem to be approaching anyone. all in all, nothing special, definitely reflective of people that work in the area.

I was amazed at the quality of service. I work in the area and saw that Opal had won serveral "Best of City Search" catagories so we came after work and had the best time!! The food was great for a "bar" and the drinks were awsome. The bartenders are friendly and easy on the eyes. We'll be back for sure.

I went here the weekend before last and had an awful time. The bouncers were incredibly rude and just had really nasty attitudes. The bartenders were nice (of course, they rely on tips) but it wasn't enough to salvage this place. Luckily it's near some much better places to go.

An okay bar wrecked by a bouncer! This one possibly illegal. One of our group was visiting from New Orleans. He's a likable young man, with a severe stutter. After half a dozen of us were seated, there's a knock on the window. I go out to talk to him. The bouncer will not let him in because "of a dress code." There is no dress code. People inside are wearing everything from suits to tracksuits. (The crowd looks like guys on steroids trying to make barely 20-somethings.) I try to talk to the bouncer. "He's a friend of yours?" asks the bouncer. I said yes. "He can't come in," he says. "There's a dress code. He needs to talk to me." Given the uncomfortable situation, the stutter became so severe that my friend was unable to talk. "Can't you just let him in?" I ask. It was becoming clear that the reason he was refused was more his speech impediment (making people feel" uneasy") than any dress code. When I went outside to mediate, the bouncer turned his back on me and walked inside. My friend (who was visiting for just a few days) was forced to leave. This spoiled the night for all of us. Side note: The Federal AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT makes it illegal to discriminate against people with disabilities. Looks like that's what we have here. I only wish I were a lawyer. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers

I cwent to Opal because it won one of the best after-work bars on citysearch, so I headed out on a Friday and stayed from 6pm-9pm. With all the great bars in the city, I don't understand why anyone would choose to come to this one.

The crowd: Male-fest! There were literally about 5 women in the whole place. It was 95% over-30's males, and they all looked like they work in the IT department at Initech. And that's fine so long as they're interesting to chat with, but they're not. It looked like a high school dance. Everyone kept to themselves in their groups and talked to no one.

The drinks were okay, nothing to write home about. Same for prices.

The one good thing was that the music was actually pretty good.

All in all, this place was just mediocre!

Had a private event here not too long ago and I have to say it was great! The room was nice a cozy, perfect size. The staff was very accomodating and helpful. DJ played great music. Oh and the appetizers that we had passed around were so tatsy! I have to say I was very impresses by Opal, I booked it figuring it would be good but they far beyond exceeded my expectations and I cant wait to stop by one night with some friends again! Thanks OPAL!!!

I went to Opal for my birthday and was pleasantly surprized. We got this private lounge area downstairs which was quite comfortable. I had about 35 people and there was still room to dance after my champagne toast. When I asked about specials I found I had many options, even a cake. I was able to take my mind off of worrying about details and concentrate on having fun!! The price was decent and the service was great. I'd reccommend it.

Fun happy hour spot, good place to meet guys or girls in suits. Laid-back vibe, unpretentious. Average prices for midtown. I like to come here after work; it gets really packed with the after-work crowd. Lots of mingling, just a very chill, trendy spot.

If you want to throw a surprise party for a friend or celebrate your bday w/ pals--definitely check this place out for location/set-up. Their lounge downstairs is perfect for friends to be able to sit around and talk and drink-you'll be able to hear each other/see each other/feel each other, whatever you like. If you're going there and are not invited to the party downstairs, the place is kinda lame.

I went after work, and found the place to be your sorta typical after-work, lame, pick-up'y, people getting drunk kind of place. People acting fake, shallow, etc. I personally prefer more subdued places... where you can actually have conversation, i.e., hotel bars like the Chambers Hotel, etc.. I'd never go back to Opal myself. I only went there because some co-workers wanted to go there for drinks.

This place makes a fairly nice sports bar, with pool tables and tvs showing the latest game. So I have no idea why the reviews here try to make it sound like a hot ultra-lounge. Nothing wrong with sports bars -- if you like those, you'll like this one. But just know that's what you're getting, rather than some glamarous lounge.

A friend just recently just took me to Opal and I was not that impressed. The place was okay. The place was busy but when I looked around I felt like every dude that worked in the computer department was there. A bit of a sauage factory. Drinks were average, Service was average ad food was average. Atmosphere was okay. I think it looks better in a blanket of darkness. I don't think I would rush back anytime soon.

I was there at Opal on 8/8/2006 for a going away party for a co-worker. The space in the back is for parties and was nice. We had our own bar, seating and DJ and the staff was friendly and eager to help with whatever we needed. The appetizers are okay, typical bar food but the mini-burgers were a big favourite with my co-workers and boss. Afterwards I met my friends in the front bar where there was a 2 for 1 special that night. The drinks are extremely strong and the twin bar maids were pleasant. Lots of afterwork people and definitely a lot more guys than girls. All in all, a good time was had by all.

opal rocks!! i needed to throw a party on a sat. night and really wanted a private room. after having called 17 other bars and restaurants opal was the only option within my price range. they were sooooo nice on the phone and were totally willing to work within my price range. the night of my party the staff was attentive, the dj asked what kind of music we wanted him to spin and they even threw in an extra platter of food. not only did everyone have a kick ass time, but the party didn't break my bank account - they were really nice and i'd def. come back for another event.

This is a semi-crowded bar in midtown east. Prices are reasonable as there are specials every day of the week and during the day. There is a front bar with about 6 flat screens as well as a back bar in case the front gets too packed, which it can do pretty easily due to the tables. Bartenders are friendly, although they don't seem too bright. Also, not too big on buybacks either as my girlfriend and I were there for about 5 hours and did not receive any. If you do run a tab via credit card, make sure you don't forget it as we saw several people come in to pick up the card they left and according to one of the bartenders dozens leave them there.

During warmer months, having the option to dine outdoors is a plus. Then we stay for the music when they turn it up later in the evening. The waitstaff and doorman are friendly too!

I was here in September for a friend's birthday. The dance floor was incredibly packed, hot and it was a hassle to go thru the crowd. But I had a great time because I had great company. There was a line to get in (fri night) and management was definitely present in the club. There's a strict dress code (no tanks, sneakers, etc) and this one guy took off shirt and had a tank underneath. Next thing you know, management was up in his face telling him to put his shirt back on. Overall, I had fun because it's what you make out of it.

Not a bad time had at Opal - went to a Saturday night private party in the back room. The bar in front was crowded, the entire place was hot and humid, and the intense ID check at the door was just unneccessary. Otherwise, the music was good and the drinks were reasonably priced. Would have been nice if they opened up the paneled doors for some fresh spring air.

Opal is great after work. Two for 1 drinks on Tuesday is such a great deal and the bartenders are really friendly. Its great in the spring/summer when the front panels are open, creating a semi-open space. It gets crowded around 7, which means lots of standing and squeezing between people to get a drink, so get there early to claim a chair by the bar or in a booth.

Opal just wasn't that fun. I feel like there are so many good bars in the city that when you come across a boring one, why bother? It was very generic. I was a little disappointed, to be honest, but with so many bars in the area, it was easy to move on and find a better option.

I wouldn't say this place is awful, it's just not that great. I agree with the previous posting... it used to be better because it had good music and a good crowd. But if you're going to go out for the night, I'd rather go to a lounge for good music or a regular bar for drinks. Opal is in between but the crowd leaves something to be desired.

Pros: ok sometimes

Cons: not impressed

i don't usually have a strong opinion about a bar... my friends and i either like it or we move on. last night at opal was a nightmare. it's packed with 20-somethings talking on their cellphones and using cheezy pickup lines, with one too many older men standing alone and leering at pretty girls. the bathroom line is a mile long and takes FOREVER to move. overall, this place was just a waste of time. we spent more time waiting on the bathroom line and waiting for drinks than we did hanging out. we left after one drink (unheard of) and headed over to divine bar, which is nearby, has a classier crowd, and had comfortable chairs. definitely will NOT be back to this waste of space.

I was here last year around this time and I have to say that this place has gotten much better. It's more than just one of those stuffy bars/lounges in Midtown. You can actually have fun here!

I've worked in midtown for five years, so my friends go out around there a lot. Opal is the one place I hadn't tried till recently. It just always seemed cheezy from the outside... and my impression was right. The crowd was really young, and more guys than girls when we went... which would've been fun for a group of girls, except that all the guys were guidos or wannabe bankers. And the music was lame. The last straw came when some drunk girl spilled a drink on my friend and then got mad at her for being in her way. With so many more laid back midtown bars to choose from, we will NOT be back at Opal.

My friend celebrated her 28th B'day party here last week! The place was really cool. We were dowstairs with intentions of going to Arc when the party finished at Midnight but we hanged around. It was worth it....the music was better than Arc.

I had finally decided to go to Opal after someone raved over it, but it was definitely a big disappointment. The music was pretty good, but the people were definitely not attractive. The dance room in the back was like a meat market and not easy on the eyes. AND my boyf had to pay cover, there's plenty of other better places where you can go, have an awesome time, and not pay cover.

I found it interesting that people "loved or hated" this place. I was there on Saturday night and ended up loving it. Forget about management and how they treat you! If you go to a place with your friends what do you care. I never even saw managment there that night...I would advise going here.

I'm just so tired of bars that treat you like you should be thankful to be there. There are thousands of bars to choose from, and after the attitude my friends and I received last Saturday (I won't bore you with the details...), I know we will not be back there.

I agree with rocko55...I had a good time at Opal years ago, but now it's just lame. I guess that's what happens with most bars. They lose their appeal after a while. But the thing about Opal is you go there and feel like you're in college again... and not in a good way. Guys in shiny shirts stare you down, drunk people everywhere are spilling drinks on you and burning you with their cigarette by accident. And I also agree with the people who commented on the rude management. Come on, this isn't a hot new club. It's old news Opal.

Thursday night was great. All of us from Commerce Bank frequently hit this place on Thursday nights.

This is the kind of place that buttoned-up 9-to-5-ers visit at 6pm and stumble out of by midnight. Boozy office workers unwind in any one of the booths that circle the bar, where they can order up hearty bar food…
