Great first date atmosphere. Dim lighting. Light food flavor. Dessert is worth saving your stomach for. Try the mochi balls, I've had strawberry and vanilla.

The Bar at Ponzu is great for private parties. Very cool ambiance & a full service bar. They also serve delicious appetizers! There is no dance floor, or if there was one we weren't using it, but it's a good place to mingle & chat with an intimate crowd.

I stopped in for a bite to eat and since I was solo and found out that the restaurant menu is available in the bar, I chose to sit in the bar. It was happy hour so many the appetizer items were half price so I decided to try a few different appetizers. I was blown away by how flavorful they were. I tried the ribs, the calamari and the sprin rolls. They were each fantastic. The ribs and the calamari had quite a bit of kick to them so make sure you have a nice cold beverage nearby. I highly recommend this place for a happy hour.

I can't recall how the food was because I had a terrible experience here. Waited for 40 minutes for an appertizer but the waiter couldn't even recall what we ordered. The ambience here is romantic but parking is not easy though.

Ah Ponzu...how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways...Granted, the meal I ordered was delivered to my room in the excellent Serrano Hotel located directly above. Having enjoyed my stay for two days, I decided to try the room service. I wish I'd stayed in bed.
The fact that they didn't have sourdough toast should've been the first clue to hang up the phone. Come on people! I'm in San Francisco, the mecca of sourdough, ordering from a (presumably) nice restaurant, and my choices for toast are wheat and white? I'm still at a loss trying to fathom that one. No matter...the disappointment would keep growing.
When my breakfast arrived, the bill was the next shocker. Call me a cheapskate (many people have) but 42 bucks for two two-egg breakfasts and a carafe of coffee was a little steep. Why, oh why, did I leave $8 more gratuity on top of the 20% tip and $3.00 delivery charge they had already levied? That was my bad...I should've sent the guy packing with a 'kind' word for the chef, except that it wasn't his fault, and he was extremely friendly.
Now for the food. If there is one good thing I can say for this breakfast, at least they know how to cook eggs properly over-medium, which is more than I can say for most places. The WHITE toast was overdone--I think I cut my gums on the crust. Five, count 'em, withered, dessicated potato wedges passed for hashbrowns. The sausage was gamy and barely cooked, the bacon dry and over-cooked. At least the coffee was passable, and coming from Portland, OR, I can sniff out cheap coffee a mile away.
So there you have it. I paid fifty bucks for a ten dollar breakfast. Do yourself a favor: if you are ever staying at the Serrano Hotel (which I would highly recommend,) don't order breakfast from Ponzu. Walk across the street to the mini-mart and buy yourself a bag of potato chips and some chocolate milk. Trust me: you'll sleep better.

We met a friend from PA here during the middle of the week where it was not busy at all. I was surprised at how spacious the restaurant was. My mojito was delicious & our server was so helpful & sweet. It is a great place to go & share dishes. Lots of different things to choose from. We had the spicy ahi tuna tartare which was great. The Hawaiian Walu was cooked very well. Not fishy at all. The Potato Samosas were nice & flavorful. The establishment was extremely clean & cute. I can't wait to go back there again to try other things on the menu.

Took a shot at Ponzu's dim sum happy hour. After seeing a recommendation for this restaurant online, I hoped for more. The dim sum menu was confusing, in fact I never did find one. Waitress was RUDE when I asked for it. Told me it was "right in front of me!" Well I never did see it and no, I wasn't drunk. All four in my party were confused. We ordered spring rolls, ahi tuna tartar, garlic naan, and chicken wings. Only the naan was great. My tofu wantons never did arrive, and we weren't charged for them.

The waitress seemed HIGHLY annoyed that we might show up for dim sum.

The drinks were great. Lychee-infused sake was excellent. Mix drinks were fantastic too, especially the lychee martini served in a stainless steel martini uh--glass.

While this restaurant might be great in a city other than San Francisco, Ponzu just doesn't cut it with the local competition. Next time I need Asian food: Betelnut

We celebrated my birthday by having dinner here with friends and had a good time! The server was fun and did a great job of keeping our glasses full of delicious cocktails - I had a couple rounds of the Bruce Lychee, a delicious drink with green tea infused sake. YUM! The food was less than par to what I've enjoyed in the past, but nonetheless, I would come back to hang out, have appetizers and some more creative signature drinks.

Ponzu is good at the pan asian thing, but I am from Connecticut where the king of pan Asian cuisine, chef Bun Lai, resides in his one of a kind restaurant, Miya. Once you've been to Miya, you are ruined for anything else pan Asian, and I am not exaggerating on iota. Where can I get an "Ebibaba" in SanFran? We have great great restaurants here but is there anything around like Miya's Sushi? If you arn't going to be in Connecticut, at least take a peek at chef Bun Lai's myspace page which is unusual, to say the least.

I went here for just a few cocktails and stayed for the great food. The lamb is the BOMB and the calamari is beyond excellent, you have to try the dipping sauce that it comes with. The music was cool lounge and they turned it up when the crowed started hopping. Our waitress Kelly was very attentive and always had a fun attitude. I will totally go back to this spot again.

This once-hip, once-fancy small plate fusion restaurant in a boutique hotel, is now a somewhat tired "nobody goes there anymore" place. Gone is the inventive food, the noise, the crowd. But now they try extra hard -- they've lowered prices, they have happy hours, drink specials, even frequent infusion cards. The Alice-in-wonderland decor is as festive as ever, even if the fabric is now faded and stained. At the edge of the sketchy Tenderloin neighborhood.

This place has a nice atmosphere and the food is pretty good. There's something missing though, it's a huge restaurant with very friendly staff but it seemed to be empty on a friday night in union square which seemed odd to me. The food was good but nothing phenominal. My favorite was the chicken spring rolls and the garlic naan but all the small plates were yummy. Had a pretty good drink menu too.

I went to Ponzu last night to meet some friends for cocktails. We had the Yuzu, the Bonzai Mojito, and a pomegranate/strawberry cocktail (the name of which I've forgotten). The drinks were wonderful and the fresh ingredients were different and interesting. As the bar was closing just when we walked in, the bartender gave us several recommendations for other bars in the area that we'd like (which we did). She was extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I would definitely go back to Ponzu for drinks again.

I've walked by this place many times and this evening my gfriend and I decided to finally stop in for dinner. Unfortunately, the nice decor and eye candy from the outside didn't compare to the unprofessional and mediocre food/experience inside. The ambiance was intimate, but they were playing gay house at a decent volume. The waitress was nice, but had the energy of a school girl getting ready the prom and the food, well, it was bland. All this and a price tag of $100 for one round of sake and a couple side dishes and entree's just doesn't cut it in this town - unless that is you are conveniently located to snag the occasional tourist that has no idea that Asian fusion food even existed until that moment.

Not much I can say, other than I wouldn't go back. And if you find yourself walking by this as many times as I have, skip it and go to the Indian place just a block away. They aren't pulling any punches at Naan and Curry.

My hubby and I visited after work for happy hour apps and drinks upon reading about the chef in an upcoming article in SF Chronicle magazine. The fruit-infused sake was pretty good - peach, mango and melon (?) were FABOO. The apps were underwhelming. The food overall was hit and miss. BBQ ribs had great flavor but little meat. Calamari was so-so. Fried tofu was okay for 50 cents, but I would never pay full price there. Overall, it was an okay outing which was disappointing. We expected yummy treats. The best thing about Ponzu are its drinks. Our waitress wasn't the most helpful with the 50 cent apps either. We had to ask her 3 times to explain to us how the menu for that worked.

Although the food was quite good and location very convinient (in the theater district), we thought it was a bit over-rated, considering how many Pan-Asian restaurants are in the city..the prices were a bit high for what we had. We thought it was more like a Asian tapas plates and would be good to share food, however the portions are not large enough to share (there were 6 of us) and the seating is not convinient for grops (we had 2 round tables for 6 pp). If you're in the theater district, this is a good option though..

Took some out-of-towners there who were looking for dinner near union sq. with "fun drinks." the good news is the drinks were great and so was the calamari appetizer. the bad news is that the entrees were average (not awful, not great) and the seating, though pretty, was uncomfortable. if you go, i'd go for drinks and apps and head for dinner elsewhere.

One of my favorites. Loved everything from the decor to the service! Portions are huge so be prepared to take some home or have a lot of people to share!

I thought I'd like this place, since I'm always down to try anything packed with flavor. Unfortunetely, the only highlight was our server - while delightful - she wasn't the reason we were there. The meal itself was lackluster, as much as I tried to muster some enthusiasm (especially since it was my idea to go there).
It's a pity, since the atmosphere is quaint and the bar scene is nice. But I can't go somewhere in good faith knowing that I can get better food, similar ambience and better values at many other places in the City.

Went specifically for Happy Hour and found out their selection was very limited. So drinks and appetizers for 2 people ended up being over $100! We ordered 3 apps and about 2 mojitos, which were very bland and weak. The apps were really good though, especially the calamari. Maybe dinner is also better, but I don't think I'll be finding out anytime soon.

The lounge is super cozy with comfortable couches and cool music. There are huge aquariums behind the bar and the staff is personable and friendly. The food is amazing and the drinks are so good I want to have all the recipes. It's always a good time and I always love to take my out of town guests there to wine and dine them. Ponzu is definitely my favorite restaurant in the city.

This is such a great get away in a city that can at times become quite hectic. I like to hideaway here with a good friend or two and sip on unique cocktail combinations and tasty treats from the kitchen. The perfect place to get away and lounge, relax, and rejuvinate myself before I return to the chaos that is my city life.

I went there with a colleague of mine while we were in town for a conference. The location is a good place, right across from a parking garage, easily accessible. The interior decor was dark and definitely meant to be a bit more romantic and easy-going. Food was impressive, but nothing out of the ordinary, however the spring rolls with the spicy sauce and mint sprigs was definitely a must have! Overall, not a bad place to visit at least once.

My friends and I had booked this place to celebrate our birthdays. We were at the bar ordering drinks. When I asked the bartender to make my drink wth a specific vodka, she gave me an attitude. Later on, she spilled a whole shot glass of syrup all over me. Which totally ruined my birthday. I was sticky from head to toe. Manager only gave a drink on the house, when i complained. When we were seated. It took an hour and fifteen minutes for our food to come. Food wasn't at all what I expected. The portions are extemely small. It wasn't worth the $$$. I'm never going back to this place ever again. Next day I also emailed the general manager, but never got a replied. Some service, eh?!

This is a great place to celebrate birthdays and other special occassions (in groups -- not good for Valentines etc). The food & service was good; it tends to get very noisy. The crowd is usually young. Good place to take out-of-towners. Try it at least once!

Having a husband who is not over enamoured with asian food, I convinced him to humor me and have dinner at the Ponzu. It was our 1st evening in SF, the restaurant was in the hotel we were staying. Needless to say we nearly went back again, just that SF has so much to offer were dining is concerned. Whatever we had, was just absolutely divine, The Duck was just melting on our tongues while the lamb was caressing our taste buds. If and when we go back to SF, we will definately make sure that we go back to the Ponzu.
