Until my last two visits during the last 6-8 months, Hell's Kitchen was one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the city. \n\nA group of six went to have dinner and drinks after a show. By experience the pineapple margaritas, the menu and portions were simply perfect. The last two visits were very different as menu items have been removed/changed, portions have been noticeably decreased, and the place appears to be a home for huge ROACHES. Two of them jumped and walked over two of us during our last visit. Due to the surprise and disgust, everyone jumped away from the table and waiters rushed to catch and pick up the roaches with white towels. Everyone at the restaurant noticed the chaos. What was most disappointing was that the manager on duty (12/02 evening) or any other member of the staff did not take the initiative or time to come apologize to our party. We had to ask to see the manager. He approached us and quickly hushed us saying,

This place is magnificent, we went there last nite as a pre dinner for a how we were going to see. We made reservations so luckily we didn't have to wait. The place is very tiny but youre still comfortable not tiny were you're closed in to the next table. The ambience and the atmosphere were great the lights are dim down. The waiters were great they explained the menu and all my questions about some ingredients. The food is delicious I am not a big fan of Mexican food but this was to die for, mind you I am a very picky eater and petite. The appetizer I choose were the scallops trust me when I tell you they were really really good, but becuase its an appetizer it was very tiny and they only served 3 which is fine. I only has one drink which was a Sangria it was made to perfection not too sweet and not too dry. For the main course I had Roasted Chicken and Monterey Jack Quesadilla with Poblano Crema. It was very delicious no complaints with the food whatsoever. Cons are Pricey what can we say were in New York what isn't pricey, there is only one bathroom so you have to wait 5-10 minutes. Those are just minor cons. My overall experience was great I will reccomend this restaurant to anyone.

After reading all the acclaimed reviews of Hell's Kitchen, I decided this would be a perfect place to wine and dine my wife for our first Valentine's Day dinner together. \r\n \r\nWe were impressed with the ambiance when we walked in since it looked romantic and the friendliness and service of the staff. We actually thought that we were going to have a great Vday dinner!?\r\n\r\nMy wife and myself agreed on eating American food. However, I saw a lot of ITALIAN options instead on the menu and very little AMERICAN food. We have nothing against Italian food but we had that for lunch. \r\nMy wife wound up having the shrimp appetizer instead ONLY which tasted just ok. I decided to eat the ""World Famous"" HK Burger but the burger just tasted ok. After 1 hour and I reached home, I started getting sick. I got a massive stomach ache and cramps thanks to the HK Burger which was either undercooked or the beef was tainted and contaminated. Is this the price I have to pay for eating a ""quality"" burger??? I was sick for two days and had to miss work! Because of HK, I am now paranoid to go outside to any restaurant and eat since we are not the ones cooking! \r\nThe restaurant is soooo overrated. My experience at HK definitely left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended).\r\n

I ate here last week with my boyfriend...started at the bar with some amazing cocktails..me..wajito..my fella..a beuno anejo margitita..bartender with the moustache was super friendly and helpful!!!! Dinner was great but what bothered us most was the creepy guy with the chef whites(chef maybe??) who stood at the end of the bar for most of our meal and just ""surveyed""the dining room...Why isn't he in the kitchen cooking..looks like he gets in the way of the staff a lot too. The reason I say ""creepy"" is because my boyfriend said when I went to the bathroom he totally stared at me,checking me out..EEEEEWWWWW!! Food was great and staff was super friendly from the hostess..to the ,manager..to the bartender(nice moustache..my boyfriend has one too!!!) to the super nice server(forgot his name) BUT seriously that chef guy is creepy..get back in the kitchen....and stop making customers feel weird with your creepy stare

just okay....ambiance. just okay...food. just okay...service. tried the steak tacos, sirloin, guac, the sea bass and a few other things with friends. again, the food was okay but not the best guac or the best anything. i was expecting progressive, flavorful mexican but received bland mexican that i could make at home. again, its an okay place if you're hungry and happen to be in hell's kitchen, but nothing i would go out of my way to visit. i've always been skeptical of moderately priced to expensive mexican, because that just goes against the grain of what mexican food is, and this is the epitome of why i would just go down to chavellas in brooklyn if i had a craving for anything mexican.

I ate at Hell's Kitchen on Valentine's Day and had an awesome time. Everyone on the staff were very nice and helpful. When the manager stopped by to ask how everything was I couldn't stop gushing about the food. My favorite dish was the Tiger Shrimp. My boyfriend had the Lamb and it was out of this world. If you have a chance to stop by the bar for a drink and apps make sure Rick is working. He is the best.

We had an 8pm reservation, were seated at 9:15, received our first nibbles at 10pm. No apologies, misleading wait updates, and no attempt to make the situation better. When we spoke with the manager, we were chastised and the blame was placed on the table seated before us. The evening ended with the manager sarcastically making fun of us, the bartender criticizing my drink order and being told we were not welcome back. Aren't they thrilled they included 20% gratuity in the check? We paid the full bill and will never go back. Oh, and the food was overpriced.

Myself and 6 other people had 6pm Wednesday night reservations here. We were there in time for the reservation, greeted by a friendly but rushed waiter, got drinks, apps, dinner and coffee. Everything was wonderful, although the app sizes were definitely on the small size for the price. After the coffee was served you could tell they were rushing us.. the check was brought before it was asked for and the bus boys began clearing everything off the table and when I say everything they even took our water glasses out from in front of us. They took the paid check off the table and within 2 minutes came over and asked us to leave our table. I have NEVER been asked to leave a table before, especially in a nicer restaurant that has received 4 1/2 stars by other people. I will not be going back, and would definitely not recommend this to anyone, unless they like being rushed after paying a considerable amount for dinner

Honestly this is my favorite restaurant in NYC. The atmosphere is great, the food is phenomenal, the service is lovely and it's just overall an incredible restaurant/food and experience. Ordered the sea bass, the guacamole as an appetizer, the banana empanadas for dessert. A really most delightful experience and it's relatively inexpensive as well. Don't forget to try the Sangria as well. You'll be coming back again and again.

Its a shame because the food was good but it was just unbearable especially the finance dooshes harassting us during our meal. Dont understand why hells kitchen attracts such trash. really not cool

My over all experience was very nice. A few of my girl friends met up for dinner and drinks and we wanted to try a new place and decided to try Hells Kitchen. It ambiance was cool. The food was great and so were the drinks. The only problem that I had was our waiter was not the nicest.

If you want to make reservations for a Saturday night, plan ahead of time for a 2 hour dinner and leave no room for lateness because you will certainly be reminded by the host or manager that you are running out of sync with their reservation cycle in the middle of dinner. The waiter/waitress was unfriendly, neglectful and moreover useless when asked for food advice; luckily, the menu descriptions were enticement enough. There are a few key dishes that I would recommend: the ceviche, the grilled shrimp entree and flan were delicious. Overall, the service, the food, and the experience, I would not recommend this restaurant, unless you're intent on throwing away a lot of money on a mediocre dinner.

This restaurant is awesome-the decor is dark, dimly lit, very noisy but fun too. always crowded and you have to make a reservation unless you get there @ 5pm. Last time we were promptly seated and started off with drinks and black bean dip. Apps include goat cheese empanadas which were cripsy and greasy (excellent). The duck and shrimp with guac as main courses are fantastic. I would go back every week if I could. It's a little pricey for Mex food but it's more tex-mex. they have awesome cocktails. Food wise it may equal a dos caminos, but the atmosphere is better, less chain-like. Highly recommended for dates too!

My girlfriend and I went last night and it was a great experience. The ambiance is perfect and the food is a very good mix of eclectic and traditional. The toughest part was choosing among about 10 delicious-sounding choices. I would definitely go back. I don't know where the bad service reviews are coming from, although I do notice that most are from more than a year ago, so maybe management and staff has changed. We found the hostess, waiter and chef (who came out to ask if we were satisified) to all be very friendly. Plus it was my birthday so when my girlfriend mentioned this they gave us a free dessert but didn't overdo the whole thing.

Definately worth the wait!\r\nWent for dinner there on Friday night and everything was fantastic. The margaritas are tasty and strong. My guest had the capirinha and she said it was the best she's had. We started with the lobster fritters and the calamari. The calamari was definately spicy and full of flavor. We both preferred that over the fritters, although both were great. For entree I had the Lamb shank on the waitress' recommendation and was not disappointed. The homemade corn tortillas that accompany it were yummy when filled with the tender and spicy lamb which fell right off the bone. My friend ate the shrimp dish which was a touch sweet and a touch spicy. We'll definately go back again. The wait was a bit long, but not any longer than the hostess told us it would be. The food, the drinks and the service were all well worth it.

the food is OUTSTANDING, and it might be one of my favorite restaurants in the city (and i am a big food snob). the appetizer they serve gratis is great...toasted pita of some sort with a black bean flavorful dip. the appetizers i've tried haven't been so grand, so steer clear from those. the SHRIMP is my absolute favorite. the STEAK is awesome with those yummy potato things and sauce. the LAMB is pretty good. avoid the lobster (when it's on special), i didnt think it was great. when they have the DUCK on special, get that--it's great. for dessert, get the banana empanadas, they are divine (but ask for ice cream instead of cool whip if you like the hot/cold a la mode combo). the cinnamon cake thing is good too. i forgot if the choco cake is good...obviously not memorable.\r\n\r\ndon't be confused. this is not mexican food like we think of mexican food (i'm from CA). it has a unique taste to it. admittedly, the service can be inconsistent. if you can go early, make a pre-theater reservation before 7PM. and try their wajito (watermelon mojito). yummmmmm.

I went here for a birthday party on a Friday night, 8:30pm. 12 people were expected but a bunch of us were caught in horrible traffic. By the time all of us arrived, it was about 8:35pm. We apologized profusely to the hostess and waitress (we had already called to tell them we were stuck in traffic) and they promptly informed us that we had to sit down and hurry up because we only had the table until 10pm. I guess they book reservations every two hours on the hour and that's that. No if's, and's or butt's. That is the first time I have ever been to a restaurant where they told me I would have to leave my table at a certain time for the next group. So we sat and ordered drinks and meals. Every time the waitress came over to give us our drinks, she told us to be quiet so she could concentrate. How many brain cells does it take to deliver a drink? They brought all the wrong dishes out for dinner and then told us that we ordered them, instead of admitting their mistake. The food was pretty good but I'll never set foot in their restaurant again. It wasn't worth the angst.

Ate there last night with visitors from Germany. It just wasn't worth the wait. We joined the waiting list at around 7PM and were told that it would be about 1/2 hour before we would be seated. It was an hour before they got to us and, in the meantime, we observed that other groups who joined the list after us were seated first. When we inquired about our place on the list, the hostess told us the list was ""moving"" without specifying our place. When we complained to the manager, we were invited to leave. We were not the least bit rude, but merely observed that it appeared to us that others without reservations were being seated ahead of us. The manager's response was ""If you're not happy, you're free to leave."" How's that for customer service?\r\n\r\nIf I hadn't already waited nearly an hour, didn't have out-of-town guests with me and it wasn't raining out, I would have walked out. The bottom line is, the food just wasn't beyond average, was overpriced and left each of us feeling like we could have done better elsewhere. \r\n\r\nFor what it's worth, I entertain out-of-town guests frequently (e.g., 3 of the past 4 weekends), dine out almost every night of the week and have never before been motivated to write a negative review of a restaurant. Unfortunately, this place earned a bad review.

If a restaurant is going to be named after the famous dining area of the city, it better live up to the expectations. Hell's Kitchen lives up to its name and more. I walk by this place everyday, so it was about time I gave it a try. OUTSTANDING mexican food, great drinks, and moderate price. I will definitely bring friends here next time I stop by.

Who needs the Taco stand when you have $12 tacos here? All jokes aside, the food is very good but incredibly expensive. Fusionesque Mexican should only be so spendy as it is tasty. Recommended for reservations as the place is not large and standing in line is a futile exercise.

I loved this place. I had the Halibut which was a customer-favorite and it was so good I ate it all without having the thought of offering my friends to try. Nuff said. The Sangria was wonderful and I accidentally knowcked over my (empty) glass as I was putting on my coat to leave and they were so nice about it and didn't make a big deal. The staff here is very professional and courteous and they helped my friends make a decision about what to order. I don't consider this authentic Mex...probably a mex-american fusion but it is excellent!

I'm sure I'm setting myself up for a future disappointment by saying this, but Hell's Kitchen always delivers, every time. The drinks are great, the good is great, and though I read in the Citysearch review that the service can be slow, I've never experienced that. In my numerous trips there, the host or hostess has always kept us up to date on when we can expect our table. HK has quickly become the default restaurant for us, and the place we like take out of town guests staying in midtown. Highest recommendations.

Pros: the food, the drink, the service

Cons: none!

The food here is always excellent ! And the servers very nice and helpful. It gets pretty packed every night, so I would recommend reservations. Definitely get the Tuna Tostadas for an appetizer & any special they have with duck ! The chips & black bean sauce they have on every table are to die for. They are warm & slightly sweet, half bread half chip & they are addicting ! Also the pan seared chilean sea bass, it comes with grilled chayote & a plantain puree that is so good you will want to come back the next day and have it again. I have been here many many times and evey experience has been wonderful.

This place is wonderful! I went to Hell's Kitchen today for lunch with 7 colleagues, and left extremely satisfied! The waitress and waiter were extremely attentive and fun! Their portions of food were large, and the festive decor was simple, understated, yet impactful! I love the fact that they give cornbread and bean dip as an appetizer! And the tuna tostadas were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I would definitely go back again! Great margaritas, great time, great place.

I bring my friends to Hell's Kitchen all the time, and after waiting forever for a table, they all love it. The steak last night was very well-spiced and perfectly cooked, and the seafood is consistantly good. It's far better than what usually passes as Mexican. We've also downed more than our share of margaritas; I especially like mango. The big con is waiting for a table, since there are no reservations after 7. It's fine for a group of 2, but hell (pun intended) if you're more than 4. Coming late is fine, as tables are usually available after 10PM.

I have worked in hotels, bars, restaurants my whole life & even owned my own. Reagarding this establishment -- menu looks great, decor colorful & lively, it all stops there. First try -- gave name for a dinner table, went to the bar, the bartender, and I've bartended in faster paced establishments, pointed at me & as I began to ask what kind of flavored vodka they serve, obviously too much for him and he moved on to the next parton. Passed the host stand and explained that they should not hold a table for me due to rude bartender. Thinking I would give it another chance, called for reservation -- how the hell was I to know they only accept reservations from 5-7pm ONLY. I was made to feel like a looser that I did not know this. I did not know -- and will never care.

Despite having 3, yes 3, glasses of water dumped on me by the waiter and the lack of response by managment, I really enjoyed the key lime martinis and the food was excellent. Just make sure not to sit with your back to the bar and all should be ok! \n\nI went with a group of 10 and besides the water, the service was fine if a little slow.

I like this place: The food is always good, the frozen margaritas are awesome, and the service staff is usually good. My only complaint is that I was there on two separate times at just after 5pm and thirsty for a drink, but they weren't open yet. They should open earlier!

Hell's Kitchen has consistantly been the best restaurant experience I have ever had in New York. I've been there many times, and I have never been disappointed by any facet of this restaurant. Food: amazing. Service: perfect. Ambience: perfectly suited for the space and versitile enough for a first date or large party. And killer margaritas!

Among NYC restaurants that gussy up Mexican food for Gringo foodies, Hell's Kitchen is among the best. Offering less expensive, better food and drink than Rosa Mexicana and a modicum of comfort and courtesy missing at Mexicana Mama, Hell's Kitchen is worth a little trek.\n\nStaff was unfailingly accomodating and polite.\n\nChef has a rare deft hand with the deep frier as evidenced in the pita-like toasts offered gratis (instead of the usual crisp tortillas) with an excellent black bean dip, the surprisingly delicate duck empanada on red mole, and the banana pastry for dessert. \n\nExcellent balance of textures and flavors in my red snapper on a bed of plantains, onions and tomato, all in banana leaf - fine attention to detail in the prep. Paired wines were excellent.\n\nRestaurant would earn a 9 were the noise lessened and the tables more generously spaced. In sum: good show!

Can I say good food, friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere all in one! No reservations were required, however the small space means you most likely will need to wait a bit.\n\nMargaritas need some help - may be the cheap tequila. The food is hot, hot, hot to trott if that's what you like. However, will aim to please on the spice scale. \n\nPrices definitely match the quantity and quality of the food. \n\nRecommend eating at the bar for an intimate, relaxed dinner.

i used to be a fan of this place-the service was consistently slow, but the food outweighed the service. as of late though(maybe change of ownership)the food quality dropped with the menu change and the service got worse. when they brought the wrong dish (their mistake), they insisted that i pay for it-giving me a lecture ""at restaurants, u order, u pay"" with an attitude. what was worse, HE was the manager! probably the worse restaurant experience in nyc.

Cons: bad service, slow service, everything salty

Food here was generally ok... considering the insanely long wait to get a table. Not that the place is overly packed, just that the restaurant manager/greeter wouldn't sit people in a timely or organized manner. There were empty tables, but somehow the maitre d kept on disappearing for long periods while people waited... only to turn up and tell waiting guests that they can't be seated yet. \n\nOther than that, the lamb shank I got was pretty good, nothing spectacular, but definitely tasty. Too bad the evening was ruined by the clueless management of guests upfront. To be fair, our waitress was efficient and cheery and tried to soothe things for us, but it does sound like our experience is not uncommon.\n\nAvoid unless you and your guests like to be annoyed.

I now know why friends have panned this place so often. To start with, the maitre'd has the most condescending and arrogant attitude towards patrons. Within an hour I witnessed him being confronted by no less than 4 different parties for his inept seat allocation and long wait. The food is decent and table service a hit-or-miss in the 3 times I've been there. \n\nNot worth the hassle... 9th Avenue has too many other awesome restaurants with better food and service for this pretentious joint to be on anyone's list of places to eat at.

The food is fresh, inventive and fun. The place and location are no frills. The staff have been known to be a bit abrasive in trying to rush you out by leaning over and taking your plate or asking you multiple times if you're done when you're in the middle of a conversation. However, it is the food that will bring me back and I hope the last occasion of bad service will be my last.

Excellent restaurant, appetizers and all four of our dishes were tasty and inventive. Lots of flavor but not too heavy. The shrimp with plantains was the table favorite. The place is fairly small so you can't find a private table, but it didn't feel overly crowded. It has modern earthtone decor with low warm lighting. They don't take reservations after 7:00 during the week so we had to wait for around 15 minutes. The crowd is young, I took my parents and I think they were the only customers over 35 years old. Four people with wine and appetizers came to about $150 with tip. Really yummy food at a fair price.

Had dinner pre-theatre on saturday. Got me out just on time. The portobello mushroom roll app. was fantastic and huge and the rock shrimp app. had a ton of flavor. The avocado leaf tuna entree was great (a lot of heat, the way I like it) as well as the pulled pork special. Good cheap wine list and awesome raspberry margaritas! Honestly just as good as Mesa Grill for about half the cost.

We went to Hell's Kitchen a while back for pre-theather dinner for 6. It's a small place with an intimite appearance and trendy ambience. But, it is a little loud for group conversation. Their dishes were more fusion than most ""Pan-Asian"" places with a variety of influences and were very innovative with nice presentation. Prices were moderate, and I would definitely go back. We didn't need reservations, but I would probably recommend it on weekends after 6:30.

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the city. The food is terrific! It offers the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. My favorite? The grilled shrimp and guacamole on plantains with jalapeno puree and deliciously sauteed veggies with tortilla strips. IT'S AMAZING!! Their fresh fish dishes make you moan. And the free cornbread/bean dip appetizer rocks. There's a reason this place is always packed.

After requesting to be seated at an empty table, the waitress (who was so terribly burdened when we asked to move from the bar to the table to have dinner) asked us to get up from our seats and wait for a smaller table because a party of 3 just walked in... and the table was for 4. How exceptionally rude!! I have never been seated and then asked to get up and wait because a larger group came in!! There are so many restaurants in the city... no need to tolerate that treatment!
