The place was great and when we walked in we were made to feel so very welcomed. Nick, our server, was so very sweet, funny and attentive. The food was great. The steak was perfectly cooked and my Mom had lobster that was so very succulent and well done. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It can be a bit pricey, but I always believe that you get what you pay for! Gotta love Roth's and we didn't have to travel all the way downtown!

Pros: Servers were wonderfully attentive and sweet

Cons: The mashed potatoes could have been warmer

Where to begin? First off, as a fairly regular NYC diner, I've sadly come to realize that good food usually comes with lousy, unappreciative service. I wisely checked with citysearch before making my reservation and after reading all the reviews wondered, "can it really be? good food and good service under one roof?" My mother and I went to Roth's tonight after a broadway play and were completely pleased. I was stunned that the waiter not only came by the table several several times to see if everything was alright but the manager came by to check as well. And we didn't have to wait 20 minutes between finishing a course and waiting for the dishes to be cleared or waiting for the check. The service was kind, attentive and prompt. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and was very clean, even the bathrooms (which can be a nightmare in even the nicest establishments). I found the prices to be reasonable for a steak place and was happy with the meal. (The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that I ordered my steak well done and it was more medium.) Nonetheless, it was a wonderful and leisurely evening and the jazz music was great. Comfortable volume level where one could still conduct a conversation without straining to hear. And the musicians were so appreciative of our applause, it was actually cute. I will definitely return!

Pros: service, service, service! jazz music, good food

Cons: none at all

.

Nice atmosphere, the wait staff was phenomenal and the food was well worth every penny (and very reasonable). I was there on a second date and even she mentioned how enjoyable the evening was in every aspect. We went on a Wednesday and bottles of wine are 1/2 price! Plus, they had a live piano player which complemented the evening ever so much. I will definitely go back!

Pros: Atmosphere, wait staff and food

Cons: Nothing really, but the live music could have been a little softer (however, it did not distract form the evening).

You can not beat the food service and price. Very friendly and informal setting.
I love some of the "expert" poor reviews. Those people should stay home and eat their mother's cooking.
Try it; you'll like it!

I was invited to this restaurant along with two girlfriends for lunch. The ambiance was quite warm and charming. Really nice for couples, small gatherings The staff was friendly, although I will admit our particular waiter had an "interesting" personality, not bad but not someone I would want to spend more than than two hours around. I have also been there in the evening and my waiter Pervis was extraordinary. On this particular visit, I was greeted by the owner and he is such a nice guy. The appetizers were so tasty - try the calamari! The salads were awesome! We all decided to try something simple for the entree - burgers. So juicy and great portions. The fries were a little too well done and thin for me as I like thicker fries but they passed my test. You have to try their Chocolate cake! Never tasted anything so delicious. You might have to share, it is so rich. The bathroom was so clean and spacious. Roths is a great restaurant! I recommend you visit soon.

This steak place is lost in the big city but it has a lot to offer. If you want to put this steak joint against some of NY's finest it will more than hold it own.

Roths is kind of a gothic anamoly in the neighborhood. The dark exterior and high prices make it tough for everyday dinning, but on special occasions this place fits the bill. The jazz is really good although if you go at the wrong time the Jazz is too loud and overpowers the experience. The steaks are pretty good, they try to be like the downtown steak houses with the meat display. Overall if you want a nice night out with out going downtown this is about as good as it gets this far north....

It smelled so good from the outside we had to go in. He enjoyed the steak very much, I found it a little bland but I usually do since I'm hispanic and American steak seems to taste like that to me always. So I don't blame the restaurant. I enjoyed the lobster and the little necks. They have a full bar which I love and they have a nice selection of wines for those that love their steak with wine. I love the service and the decorations. I could go without the piano, it makes everyone speak a little louder. It's very quaint. I defenitly have it on my list of places I enjoy. Well priced.

Roth's is a very good, friendly neighborhood steakhouse that hits all the right notes. From the wine to the apps to the entrees, Roth's delivers. It's also nice not to have to go to the touristy midtown steak joints as this is situated on the Upper West Side.

Pros: Food, Service, Location

That this place is still in business -- and thriving, by the looks of it -- reflects the low standards that most upper west siders accept as the norm: attentive service comes with high prices and solidly mediocre food -- underseasoned, sloppily presented, and above all boring. Even the steak -- and this is a steakhouse -- underperforms when compared to non-steakhouse restaurants elsewhere in the city. Unfortunately this sort of place -- aging, unchanging, and utterly uninteresting -- is par for the course for this neighborhood. Do your self a favor -- spend $15 bucks on a cab and go somewhere downtown.

I came here with my parents when they were in town. Never tried the place before but always wanted to so we decided to try it out. The wait staff were friendly and a bit quirky, made us feel like we were going there for years. Food was okay for the most part. Their chicken soup was suprisngly very tasty and HUGE however their filet mignon was a bit too dry for my liking, not exactly the best I've had. Music was very nice and not too overwhelming. Overall very nice atmosphere.

I recently went to Roth's steak house to get my steak on. I had a pretty good time although I was seated with my guest at a very small table that barely had enough room for both our plates and the bread basket to fit on. I ordered the Sirloin which was thick and cooked medium rare as I ordered it. My girlfriend had the T-bone which was even thicker and also cooked to order. Both steaks were great, the service on the other hand was just so so. We weren't even read the specials or asked if we wanted them, for an appetizer I ordered the shrimp and lobster soup (new england style) which was tasty except there was hardly any lobster or shrimp in it save a few pieces. The soup was a bit salty for my taste but good. It turned out we had a new waitress so i'll give her some slack but when our steaks came they didn't give us any steak knives so we had to ask for them after. I ordered a cappucino after dinner, I wanted an anisette, which the waitress had no idea about, turns out they don't have anisette there. Ok fair enough, when the cappucino came she gave me no sugar so that was two strikes, altogether three strikes for not telling us the specials no steak knives, and also they wouldn't let us sit at this other two seat table because apparently it was reserved for someone that spends more money in the place than we did which was a real turn off. The place got crowded later and the live music turned out to be some old man playing nothing but ragtime music which led me to exclaim, can we change decades sometime soon. I overheard other tables also expressing this and wishing the guy would switch to jazz. If you want to be heard try sitting as far away from the piano as possible because its very loud. I would reccomend the steaks they were excellent and priced fairly, the ambience wasn't much to talk about and the service wasn't great although other waiters we saw and heard with more experience seemed better. Overall good food but I doubt i'll go back.

I have heard rave reviews about this place, but hadn't gotten around to getting up there- until last night!!! I must tell you, from a girl that was raised on steak... this was the BEST STEAK EVER!!! By far better then any Luger steak. I loved the atmosphere, which was cozy and unpretentious. And to speak on the service... I have always found the majority of the restaurant service in the city horrible: not at Roth's!!! The service, food and atmosphere is well worth the money... on any buget!

After some musical chairs (don't sit at the two tables next to the piano at around 9pm - you'll have to move when they remove those tables to make room for other musicians!) my girlfriend and I had a wonderful meal. The ample portion of steamed clams were plump, fresh, flavorful and perfectly cooked - some of the best I've ever had. The ceasar salad was cold, crisp and tasty. The two delmonico steaks were superb, again cooked as we requested and full of flavor. When we first sat down a number of servers came to the table and it was a bit confusing who exactly was our waiter. Eventually a different waiter appeared and he was charming, attentive and professional. (Suggestion to the owner: dump the beat up upright piano that sounds terrible, invest in a Yamaha C1 baby grand and just have piano, piano/bass music.)

My husband and I went to Roth's for dinner on Saturday and enjoyed it immensely. We ordered the steamed clams as an appetizer. They clams were a good size, not too small, and were cooked perfectly. I find that seafood tends to be overcooked by most restaurants but the clams at Roth's were still tender and sweet. We had 2 glasses of the only pinot noir on the wine menu, which offered a good variety. My husband ordered the filet mignon, cooked medium. I like my meat red so I went with the Delmonico (ribeye) cooked rare and it was delicious. We didn't have any room for dessert, although I wish we had! The service was flawless, the waiter checked on us frequently and the busboy came by to empty out our dish of shells and refill our water. The live music and candlelit tables really set a romantic mood. Also, I ordered on Restaurants dot com website $25 certificate for $3.75, there's a 70% promotional code you can use that expires tomorrow. even without the certificate, the prices at Roth's are very reasonable for a steakhouse. We will be back again!

My husband and I wanted to go somewhere we had never been before so we picked Roth's West Side. I read all the reviews and to be qute honest; had my doubts. Well, was I mistaken!!! First of all the service was impecable. Krystan was our server and she was just delightful. The food was exellent as well. We both had filet mignons and they were cooked exactly the way we asked them to be. I was surprised by the offering of seafood they had . Quite an extensive selection. The Roth Mojito's were out of this world and complimented the food well. We're already planning our next trip and trying to decide what we'll try then!! We really enjoyed ourselves and the meal.

Great steakhouse right in my neighborhood. My boyfriend had the sirloin and I had the delmonico - - both steaks were juicy and tender. I love the fried onions and the wonderful service. Highly recommend.

My boyfriend and I went to Roth's for a New Year's eve dinner. The night did not start out well as the place was pretty empty and they still sat us directly in front of the door/host stand. When we asked to be moved, the hostess said there was nothing she could do and we were just about the leave, when the incredible manager did everything he could to work out that we were comfortable and got us a great table right by the unbelievably talented pianist. Our waiter (I wish I could remember his name) was outstanding and while never bothering us was always right there if we ever needed him for anything. Now the food - unbelievable! My boyfriend is a New York steakhouse snob and he said that the Roth's filet was just as good if not better than any Morton's, Lugers, or Keen's steak he has ever had (and he's had a lot!). When you go, you MUST try the crab cakes, as I am from New England and these rival any I have ever tried. Overall it was a wonderful and romantic night and a great way to end 2006 - you will not be disappointed, once you finally get in the door.

I recently had friends in from out of town and brought them to one of my favorite spots on the Upper West Side, only to have our very friendly server return to our table twice to inform us that the dish we had ordered was unavailable. This was at 8:00 on a Friday night! I felt embarassed in front of my guests for having raved about the place.

On a monthly basis my friends and I get together and have a girls night out.
We try frequenting new restaurants all over the city, but any time that we
visit a restaurant other than Roth's we are always disappointed.
The food is amazing!!!! The quality of food at this restaurant accompanied
by fantastic live jazz makes this place a perfect 10! This is definitely an
excellent date spot because of the ambiance and on the weekends the
night scene is more than alive. I recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys
fine cuisine at reasonable prices.

My daughter had her reception at Roths May 20th. The food was good, the waitstaff was professional, helpful and courteous. My problem was with the bar. They were not to charge anyone but run a tab per my daughter and her husbands order. Imagine my surprise when I saw the bartendars taking money!!!! We were told from quite a few of our guests that they paid for their drinks. Management should have prepared bartendars much more than they did. I hope they rectify this problem so as not to this to someone else. I also understand it is customary for restaurant to have bride and groom in for dinner so they can taste the food. We tried to do this but management did not feel it should do this!!!!

I have been to Roth's twice and both times were very disappointing. Once for dinner and once for brunch. Both times I was extremely dissappointed by the service, which was boarderline rude. They wouldnt even let me finish my glass of wine before offering another. Much of the time it seems like they do not care about you. The dinner was ok, nothing I would have again. I had their eggs benedict for brunch, which were the worst in my entire life, I tried removing the hollondaise sauce completely that was how failed it was.

I have been coming to this neighborhood spot for years. The filet mignon is the best I have had in the city and I have been to all the major steakhouses... Lugers, Sparks, etc. The only other steakhouse that seems to hold a candle to Roth's is the Strip House. The garlic mashed potatoes are hands down the best in the city! And Kruno, the beverage manager is the best bartender I have yet to come across. His drinks are very inventive, delicious and classy. Great find!!!

Though the steaks were good (not great), they were priced as though they were great. The "famous" crabcakes were good, but only in texture and not in taste- which is what you get with Maine v. Md crabs. The place is WAY too dark, beyond trying to be cool. The sides were VERY good. Service was ok, and for the price should have been better. No Creme Brulee available, but listed on the menu was disappointing. Overall, I just can't see paying $100/head for this kind of disappointment. The piano man was bad, but I'm sure they have rotating talent. I really wanted to like Roth's, but just couldn't find a reason to.

We totally enjoyed our visit to this resturant. We seen it advertised on Cable and we decided since we live on the UWS that we should try this place out! What a great meal we had. The steaks and fish were superb. I can't wait to return for another good meal.
A bit pricey but well worth the money. The service was easy and smooth throughout the whole meal. The manager bid us farewell and we sent our kudos to him.

Pros: Best Steak, Best Fish, Best sides

Cons: bit cold inside, lighting need updated

I have been in many restaurants all over the city and Roth's Steakhouse has quickly become one of my favorites. From the moment you enter till the moment you walk out the friendly and helpful staff was was just Fantastic. Please try the Filet Mignon, its just the most tender piece ever. The zucchini and mashed potatoes are a blend of garlic and butter which simply melts in your mouth. To finish off such a delightful dinner experience you must have dessert, especially the White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Gelato and hot chocolate. If you go to Roth's try to be served by Mike, he is GREAT!!

On our last visit our reservations were not honored for over 20 minutes and when we were sat the table was simply awful. We explained that we wouldn't mind waiting again for a better table - that proved to be 40 minutes. Most disconcerting was when we received our entrees both dishes (a Delomonico steak and the Surf and Turf) were stone cold. The service was no better our waitress simply disappeared (we were told it was her last day) and the waiter that took over left us for unreasonable amounts of time when we wanted to order. It was one of my worst dining experiences. The only saving grace is that Roth's has a great bartender who knows how to make a drink and they have a fantastic house jazz singer/band. I would not go back for the food but I would go back for a drink/jazz.

Meal was very expensive for what you get. The $72 Delmonico steak had to be sent back because it was not cooked to order. Go into the heart of Manhattan for the full dining experience. No need to go to upper Westside. The Management was less than accomodating.

Took my gf there for Brunch around 2 pm (Sunday). Ordered the fix Brunch menu $13.95 (seafood omelet, onion soup, OJ) and I had steak sandwidch ($15). Soup was tasty, OJ good, omelet lots of seafood. My steak is delicious w/ lots of fries. Refill bread/muffins
We liked the food a lot, very full too, but we like more about the whole attitude/feeling. It was late brunch so it's pretty empty, we were greeted by owners, seated promptly with breads up right away. Live Jazz was excellent, it was really romantic setting and waiters are friendly & helpful too, no -ve attitudes at all. Let us used GC as well, and we tipped generously. Would highly recommend & plan to go back in future w/ friends
But not sure I'll want to go there for pricey dinner :(

Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere

I would try going here again although my first experience was average. I went with a group of 12. They are definitely not used to handling that many people. The food was good. And I will give and E for Effort on the service because they tried.

A little unusual NYC steak house. More spartan and modern than the typical Sparks/Smith&Wollensky kind of "recipe". It's a good place to meet up as you can actually talk to eachother as the noise level is comfortable. The service is very friendly and unassuming and lacks the negative and sometime superficial treatment you can get at a "typical NYC seakhouse". No grumpy waiters here. I like the atmosphere and it's a friendly place one goes with a friend or the like (and perhaps not for business). And the steaks are very very good. Try the "delmonico" in Philadelphia style! It's very very good. The winel list was not that great and some wines were out - and that is not good. Maybe it was just this one time but one should not accept that.

Last night we went to Roth's Steakhouse. As soon as we were seated our waiter declared they were out of the porterhouse. After 3 of us ordered the filet mignon, the waiter came back to tell us they only had one left. Nothing was offered to make up for the half menu. I don't remember ever running into this problem at any other steakhouses. The jazz was a great touch!

Don't get me wrong, everything was fine at Roth's... but that was it, it was just ok. My girlfriend and I split the porterhouse and it was just alright. Seriously I've had friends grill just as flavorable steaks at a barbeque. The sides were flat out disapointing, the mashed potatoes could have been out of a box and the spinach was bland. I'm not trying to totally trash the place because they definately tried hard, it was just a little uninspired. Usually when I blow a bunch of cash on a steak in this city I know damn well where my money went, not so much with Roth's. The presentation was good however, and the atmosphere is unique to the city. If that's what you're into, give it a shot, otherwise, stick to the basics.

We went to Roth's to celebrate my sister's birthday. Food was excellent, not just the steaks, but everything on the menu. Overall, the value was good. I don't eat in NYC often, but it was the price was comparable to eating in Suburbs. My brother was shocked at the price, thought it would have been a lot more.

Old world charm - jazz music, great steaks and chops, creamed spinnach to die for. Knowledgeable service and fun (allbeit cramped) space. Expensive but worth every penny.

I had dinner at Roth's last night with my boyfriend and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I was very impressed with the way the various cuts of meat were shown and explained to us. We ordered the porterhouse for two and it was GREAT (as was the garlic mashed potatoes and the sauteed spinach and mushrooms!)
But perhaps the most impressive thing about the evening was the service which was, perhaps, the best I've ever received at ANY restaurant.
Treat yourself to a great steak at Roth's. You won't be disappointed!

Having experianced Roth's for the first time this past Saturday, I must say I can't wait to return! The service was exceptional and all of the food that was served to our party of eight was absolutely perfect. Generally it is quite difficult to please such a large group, but everyone was more than satisfied - I did not hear one negative comment from the group all night long (amazing).
I personally recommend the crab cakes, the crab cocktail, and the T Bone - all out of this world.
All of the staff were very attentive to our needs - as if they all owned the place. My congratulations to management - the night was perfect.
Please by all means - Go and enjoy!!!

If you're looking for a wonderful steakhouse without all of the pretentiousness, then Roth's is for you! The staff are disarmingly nice, and our waiter was knowledgable, attentive, and unobtrusive. He helped make the evening even more enjoyable. From the deliciuos crabcakes and mouthwatering cuts of meat, to the wonderfully crafted desserts, the food is superb! I love this place, and will visit again and again!

I never take the time to do these reviews but after reading a horrible and unfair recent review, I had to write. Roth's is by far my favorite restaurant in NY. The exceptional quality of the steaks speaks for itself! The food is succulent! The staff is amazingly knowledgable and friendly and they provide impeccable service! (not to mention the hot blonde waitress and cutie hostess who make the evening always more enjoyable just by existing!!) I would highly recommend this place to anyone, any day!! It's great-- definitely try it!!!

Steaks and side dishes at Roth's were great. However, the level of service we recieved for our large group (a table of 12) was very poor. The waiter was not only snobbish about the entire approach to waiting tables, but also didn't know the basic thing about waiting tables. He took away my friend's plate before he even finished! Plus, he was too busy making out with his girlfriend behind our table that he could not be very attentive to our requests. At the end of the meal, the restaurant even added 20% tip onto our bill without forewarning us in anywhere in the menu. I refused to pay that much for the level of services we received.

If you seek an affordable great steak outside of the hustle of many other midtown steakhouses, come up to the Upper West Side to get a taste of Roth's. A cozy neighborhood house, offering live jazz, premium cuts of steak, excellent service, and a personal greet from the owner...who is never too far from his creation. Feel free to start off with the crab cakes, some of the best in the city. Also while you're there, challenger the bartender to make you a martini...his are the best in the city. If I had more than two thumbs, trust me they would be up! Great steak at a great price!

Thanks to citysearch we tried this place and were not disappointed. The food was great, prices were about the same as they are in Columbus Ohio where we live. That certainly was a pleasant surprise. The staff was very friendly and informative. They even have a staff member who comes around and explains each cut of meat before you order. The sides are meant to share and are very good also. The jazz band who was playing on Saturday night was a good accompaniment to the meal and not overpowering.

I've been living on the Upper Westside for fifteen years now. I've seen many restaurants come and go in this location, and it is clear that this place is here to stay. Given the level of service, the quality of food, and the overall dining atmosphere, Roth's is the type of establishment that I am proud to call my neighborhood restaurant.

Went this past Saturday and had a great time, after requesting NOT to sit at the table in the back right by the door (one should not judge guests by their choice of dress). Our server Julio was good, the bartender ROCKED the apple margaritas. The tomato & blue cheese salad was ok, didn't care for the bbq sauce on the bottom, not enough kick to it. The porterhouse was decent, asked for it medium well, came out more red than pink. The sauces were great, esp., the bleu cheese. The sides were really good. The apple margaritas - THE ABSOLUTE BEST. Definitely will be back.

I was at first rather hesitent about eating at Roth's as I had heard through others that the service was slow and inconsistent. To my great pleasue I found that this was not the case at all. It seems as though the owner/management has finely ironed out the early mistakes and has, quite frankly, engineered one of the finest steakhouses I have frequented in my years in NYC. I see no problem with the service and believe that the food rivals any of the most highly touted steakhouses in the city.

Friendly staff from the moment we walked in. Everyone had a smile, drinks were ordered right away, the menu was explained to us thoroughly. The waiter was very helpful and cooperative. We even had the manager ask if things were good. Great service and great food. Environment was excellent, I would definitely reccommend this to everyone. It's a bit of a trip uptown, but it's worth it once you get there.

After dining all over the city with friends and going from steakhouse to steakhouse, we (four of us) think we've found the "one". Not all closed in, not old boys club feeling, yet still masculine...food that was for lack of a better word...amazing, and service that was stellar. The Delmonico steak floored myself and one friend, while another had the salmon and another their shrimp scampi. All four of us shared the decadent hot chocolate cake and apple crisp, and we left, filled, satiated, and not too heavy a hit on the wallet. Add to this, a live jazz band softly playing while you eat! All in all, the place is great for dinner/date/pre-theater/or as we saw while dining, couples with their kids. I say Bravo Mr. Roth, Bravo!
