Simple, don't go here. The service is as bad as you can find. It is as if there is a new staff every night. The waitress told the table next to us that the house chardonnay was from Israel but she wasn't really sure. Huh? It's the white

There are very few places in NYC where you can get great music with no cover. Brasserie Julien has a unique atmosphere because of its duos Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. See you there!

If I could I've given negative rating to this place since they don't even deserve a one star. The place stinks used oil. We waited for over an hour for our omelets to arrive and mine was completely undercooked. If you don't want to spoil your mood on a Sunday morning don't go there.

Even though my date and I never worked out I would def go there for another date. Oh, and the hostess there very nice and quite the cutie too ;)

One of the reasons I love Brasserie Julien and keep going back is because of all activities there is to do there.

It is not a place where you can go to eat and leave. It is a great place to go when you're bored, want to meet people and be mentally stimulated.

Brasserie Julien is true to the Brasseries in Paris which I have visited many times. When you go to a Brasserie in Paris you go there with the intention of seeing your neighbors, meeting new people, listening to live music, and to engage in topics of conversation.

Brasserie Julien continues this tradition with live jazz, wine and food trivia nights, chess tournaments, and displaying local artist's works.

They are tres authentique!!!

Brasserie Julien is pretty, romantic and not too stuffy. Service is friendly but they get a little overwhelmed later in the evening as the place gets more crowded. The back is roomier and the live music won't be so loud. Appetizer specials were interesting and delicious. We had to send both entrees back - one was way too raw and the other inedibly chewy. Both were fixed/replaced with no attitude but it was still aggravating. Dessert was the chocolate offering but it was a complete disappointment - tiny and average tasting. Overall, the place is too pricey for what you get and there are too many other choices to go back to this one.

The atmosphere is warm and cozy (and has slightly funky elegance) in the winter, and is open and relaxed in the summer, more or less spilling out onto the sidewalk. The service is attentive and professional and the food is what I think Bistro food should be: flavorful, satisfying and reliable with enough creativity to be interesting but not so much that you don't get what you expect when you order a classic dish. Prices are standard fro french bistros in the city. I've gone with my parents, with my girlfriend and with my friends, and I've gone for dinner and brunch - always a good time.

5 STARS ALL THE WAY! Brasserie Julien has an inviting ambiance, delicious food at reasonable prices, excellent service, and a world-class bartender. I will be coming here for many years, especially for the LIve Music on weekends and the best Bison Burger I've had in the five boroughs.

Wonderful place to go on a date for the flattering, romantic lighting and really delicious food. If you have been searching for a fabulous cheese fondue since enjoying it in Europe, this is the place. You will feel as though you are in Paris when you enter this beautiful gem and the live jazz several times a week add to its appeal. Recommended.

It's just delightful. Service was great and we were seated promptly. The croque monsieur was perfect. The filet mignon still ranks as one of my top five dishes in life. I have raved about this place to friends and a couple of week later, they made reservations. They said the same thing, it's pure delight eating here.

I just moved into the area with my boyfriend last month and we have been scouring the neighborhood for a good wine bar to hang out in. The bartender was great and the wine list was just what we were looking for. We have been back a few times for jazz and brought my mom when she visited - the burger is the perfect early dinner! Our new favorite place!!!!

Had to wait a bit though we had a reservation. Luckily it wasn't raining outside. The waiting area was packed with a large party also waiting for their table. The food tasted good. Location is easy to get to.We all ended up tasting/sharing and most of the food was pretty good. The Striped Bass Filet was not great. I was extremely disappointed in the overcooked, tasteless and my friend was really unhappy with the tiny piece of yucky duck. I thought the desserts were just okay, not great.

The service was fine, but because the food ranged from "fantabulous" to "meh" I can only give this place three stars. I want consistently fabulous food. Fab-food, if you will.

If you go, get the coq au vin and be sure to have a reservation.

best jazz atmosphere in the city and better than down town.
we went there for our wedding anniversaries and it was fantastic and so romantic
the manager came to congratulate us after hearing it was our 1st anniversary and made sure we had a good time, he also recommend a nice bottle of wine, think it was a margaux and then seat down with us to speak a little French with us.
will definitely go back to test more of there specialties and wine.
great to go for celebration!!!

We expected half a dozen, we ended up with 20. But the restaurant was nice enough to accommodate us all, by shifting furniture, and even giving us a discount for so many people. The food was good, if unremarkable. The service was great, and the live jazz music was terrific. Perfect for eating, moving from background to foreground with ease. Just what you'd want for a night with friends. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

The only thing you will get is sick. They brush the brochette with artificial liquid smoke. I had the BBQ swordfish brochette and it tasted like a sterno can. My wife got sick from a scallops special. I'm surprised this place is still standing.

My friends recommended me this restaurant for the ambience and I went with my girlfriend and the experience was even better than expected.
From the friendly hostess when we arrived to waiter how was so attentive and professional. The menu was over whelming with all the choices, the waiters was helpful and knowledgeable.
After following his advise every dish was special but one that I will remember this all my life is the fantastic presentation that I have never seen of the brochette.
Will definitely go back with friends and family.
This is place became one of my fav.

I was literally inspired to join Citysearch this evening to recount just how outrageously bad my experience was at Brasserie Julien. Having been to, and enjoyed, Brasserie Julien several years ago when I lived on the upper east side, I recommended the restaurant for a dinner with my parents and my girlfriend. It was the worst dinner in NYC that any of us could remember. I found myself apologizing profusely by the end of the evening, both because of the poor food and total cluelessness of the waitstaff. At the beginning of the meal, my girlfriend asked for a "light red" wine, to which the waitress responded "do you mean, like, light in color?" As for appetizers, the fish stew was odorous, inedible, and appeared to be filled with last night's leftovers. The french onion soup was tasteless. As for main courses, my "chicken confit" had no "confit" whatsoever, and was a plain-old breast. My father's steak was chewy and tough. My mothers' crab cakes came cold -- when the waitress was asked to heat them up, she did not so much as offer an apology. In any event, they were fishy. Come dessert, the waiter (who had now taken over because our previous waitress was busy setting tables and not paying attention) could not explain which flavors were the sorbet, and which were the gelato. It is impossible to think that Brasserie Julien could be this bad all the time -- maybe this was the Sunday night b-team. Maybe this place has gone way down hill in the last two years. Either way, truely, shockingly, outrageously bad. I am humiliated to have recommended this restaurant -- it will not happen again.

If it's one of those evenings when you just want to have the perfect dinner be it romantic or casual this is the place for you. Very cozy feel about this place, and food seemed to be better and better each time I ate here. Foie gras was just perfect last time, also the tuna tartar. Highly recommended. Every time Im contemplating where I should have dinner I manage ending up at this place and always leave satisfied.

One of my favorite places but I was shocked by my friend's recent experience. She has certain food allergies and one of the ingredients was not listed in the menu (understandable) but she told me the manager was very rude and non-responsive, a total lack of customer service. Clean up your act Brasserie Julien! Competition, competition, competition.

My husband and I went to Brasserie Julien to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We had honeymooned in Paris, so we wanted to go somewhere authentically French with a cozy, romantic atmosphere. We could not have made a better decision. The restaurant was beautiful, and we were given a very cozy corner table. The Camembert and salad appetizer was delicious. Our main courses of hangar steak and duck were outrageously good - among the best we've ever had! - as were the pistachio creme brulee and the Valhrona chocolate desserts. Everything, down to the wine and espresso, was wonderful. Service was friendly and exact, and the atmosphere was just perfect - very reminicent of our brasserie dinners in Paris. Thanks for making our first anniversary so memorable and special!

I went with a friend visiting me in NY 2 days after moving into this UES neigborhood. Atmosphere is amazing, live band in the front, outdoor seating if you brave the hot summer nights, very nice lighting and overall the food was OUTSTANDING. this burger stands about 1 ft in height. I honestly pondered if it could be squished to fit in my mouth, (and it did). Absolutely a great spot to take a date, or for a jazzy meal with a friend. good wine and good eats. Price could come down, but for good food it's worth it.

After a very nice glass of french chardonnay wine (...Chablis), we decided to have a romantique dinner thanks to the bartender who told us about the food!
That was a good experience! Thanks to the waiter, who helped us to choose a nice bottle of "Margaux" from Bordeaux, congratulations to the chef !
I had the Cassoulet : That was delicious!

Went here with my husband on a Saturday night for dinner since the place looked like it had great atmosphere. The decor was very nice but the service was horrific. First off, we had to ask for some bread. After finishing our cocktails, we called the waitress over to order wine. About 15 minutes later we still hadn't gotten the wine so we asked for it again. I also had to call her over to ask for more water. The entrees came so late after the appetizer that it was cold. It probably would have been good had it not been sitting in the kitchen for 20 minutes too long. The inattentive waitress and poor service ruined the experience for both of us. I would not recommend this place.

After reading all of the reviews on BJs, I was shocked by my experience. Everyone's dish arrived to the table cold and almost tasteless. All of the staff is clearly unhappy to work there by their gruff and hateful behavior. After our order and bill being screwed the manager barked at us. Finally, the prices are ridiculous for what you get - add another $10 per person and go to a top restaraunt. I am sure the owner must have friends and family writing their reviews.

My husband took me here for our wedding anniversary. It was a very romantic setting with low lighting and comfortable seatings. The staff was very attentive and even friendly (which can sometimes be hard to find in NY). The food was unbelievable! I can honestly say it was one of the most delicious meals I have had in a long time. I had the Kobe steak and my husband had the rack of lamb. Both were tender and wonderful. After dinner the manager came over and offered us a free dessert to wish us happy anniversary. I thought it was a very nice touch and I was impressed with their customer service. It was such a pleasant experience, I had to write a review. The food can be a little pricey but trust me, it is worth every penny!

Having visited Brasserie Julien, 5 times in all, they make me feel like family. After another restaurant lost our reservation on the upper East, we tried Brasserie Julien. I enjoyed their duck in a way that I didn't know it could taste, not the usual a l'orange. I was also impressed by their wait staff, and am fortunate to never have had a bad experience, only great ones. We love Brasserie Julien so much that we have introduced our 12 year old daughter to the place because of its inviting warm family type seating. We have never felt as if she was out of place, of course we've dined early. But even on New Years, when they were busy, the owners took the time out to visit our table frequently, even pouring us drinks herself from her own creations. I found a true gem and friends at Brasserie Julien.

We have never felt as if she was out of place, of course we've dined early. But even on New Years, when they were busy, the owners took the time out to visit our table frequently, even pouring us drinks herself from her own creations. I found a true gem and friends at Brasserie Julien.

Pros: Great Food, Great Staff, Inventive Menu

Cons: Pricey, Small, n/a

One of the great things about this restaurant is the music! Great Jazz on weekends! The atmosphere is romantic and the food is also. Great the duck and salmon were also delicious. Steak portions were not only large but delicious as well.

Definitely a bit pricey, but it was worth it!

My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day and we had a great time. Although it was crowded, the tables for two were spaced well enough to provide an intimate setting-candles and all! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful and was always around to refill our wine glasses. The restaurant even had a live jazz band playing (I think this was a special for Valentine's Day). Although it was definetely pricey, the excellent food, service, and atmosphere combine to give this cute restaurant an A+.

I went Brasserie Julien for brunch with a group of five and had an awful experience. We waited for our waiter for 15 minutes, and then waited for our food for over an hour. After sitting at the table with empty glasses for a 1/2 hour, we had to ask the busboys to get us drinks as our waiter was nowhere to be found.
The food was fine -- nothing incredible but not bad either -- but the service was so bad that it was hard to enjoy the meal. The table next to us actually walked out. The waitress was not very apologetic, it was like she knew she blew her tip so she didn't bother to ty to make it up to us. I see other reviews dating back 2 years ago complaining about the same sort of situations which makes me think this was not a fluke.

went for dinner with two friends and all of us were raving about our meals--the best steak i've had in a long time, and the duck and salmon were also delicious. the steak portion was very generous and it came with a beautiful salad and tasty fries. the place was a little empty but by the time we left around 9:30, the place was hopping. the atmosphere is superb and the staff was helpful and not the least bit pretentious. can't wait to go back!

The first time we visited Brasserie Julien, we took my mother and our 15-yr old nephew. We chose the restaurant primarily based on proximity to the Metropolitan and because they had live music on Saturday night. We were so happy with the choice - the nephew loved the music and we all loved the food. Cecilia was especially welcoming and fun!
I had such a great meal that I talked my boss into walking 40 blocks to go back when we were in the city on business. He raved too!

This place is not the top French bistro in town. HOWEVER, I kept going back because of the effort and the sincerity of the staff, and the improvement they made for the past years. Food is pretty good, drinks are awesome. Peak hours service is kinda shaky at times, but definitely improving. I really like hanging out there on Sunday afternoon, for a relaxing brunch / drink. It's nothing like this on UES. It's not pretentious, it's not park ave attitude. If you're a foodie, you'd appreciate.

I was very surprised to learn that there was an excellent brasserie on the Upper East Side. I thought I would have to go to Chelsea or better yet, Paris, to find such a warm and loving place to dine.

I started out with homemade country pate with cornichons, grilled sourdough bread and mixed greens with Julien's dressing then went on to the homemade fettuccine tossed with fresh vegetables in a red pepper pesto for a main course. For desset, I had Cecilia's Chocolate Marquise served with vanilla sauce and crushed pistachios.

Unbelieveable! It was sumptuous.

I recently stopped into this inviting restaurant, trying to get out of the cold. What greeted me was a wonderful selection of french dishes, and the chef's concoctions that will bring me back again. The waitstaff were very friendly and offered suggestions from wine and beer selections to their favorites off the menu. To the reviewer that had a bad experience here, i can only say that it helps to speak up if you are unhappy. That you sat in a cold spot throughout the dinner, is your own fault for not asking to move. Go back again and see how good this place really is.

We stopped by this place after seeing a movie on a sunday for some wine and dinner. We were greeted by a very angry looking waitress who sat us right in front of the door in freezing weather even tho the place was pretty umuch empty. Our onion soups were flavorless and colorless. onions in it were barely cooked and crunchy. My friends medium rare steak was well done and fries tasted and looked like they were bad fast food restaurant. My endive salad was so incredibly bad i couldn't have ore than a bite endives were so rotten they were turning brown. And on top of everything we paid a $45 a person. Absolutely the worst retaurant I've been in years.

Found this little gem of a restuarant, and will be back again soon. The decor and lighting match the superb cuisine, that kept my dinner guests and I in a lingering mood, not wanting to leave. The Oyster soup and Rock Shrimp with risotto, were favorites, along with a sinful BonBon of decadent chocolate for dessert. So many options that looked tantalizing on the menu.
