...the best New England clam chowder in the City, hands down. The chowder never changes and never varies - it is always fresh and delicious! A+ Have it at the counter with oyster crackers and a glass of cold tea. Heaven for less than 10

I have been a loyal customer for almost ten years, but tonight made me question my loyalty.

After ordering my usual fried oyster platter, I was shocked to be presented with a few whole oysters and about two dozen tiny fried bits that were dredged up from the bottom of the fryer. When I take guests from out of town here, I don't expect a huge pile of oysters, but the ones I receive I expect to be of high quality -- medium sized and plump. Tonight was a disappointment.

To the credit of our server, he did agree to take the charge off our bill after I sent the plate back. Still, the next time I want to treat my guests to a top-notch New-York fried-oyster experience, I will look elsewhere... sadly.

Always sit in the back of GCOB by the bar, otherwise you will be overrun by tourists.

Still a NYC landmark and still the best oysters that you can find without travelling to the west coast, but over the years the waitstaff quality has dropped - they are less knowledgeable about the oysters, more into rushing you out than caring about your experience and not as cordial.

However, the food still holds up to what it was and the underground speakeasy feeling exists.

I am not a beer drinker, but when I do drink it's always dark.

Highly recommend: Turbo Dog Dark Ale with your oysters and ipswich clams.

I used to love this place but something's gone wrong over the yrs. Maybe the location and tourist cache will be enough to keep it going forever which is probably a big part of the problem. The food is no longer great and the service even much less so. skip it, go elsewhere

Did a great walking tour of Grand Central Terminal (we love you, Justin Ferate!) and ended up smack-dab in front of the Oyster Bar. Tummies grumbling, we decided to belly-up to the bar and enjoy.

I haven't had a good pan roast in years so I ordered the shrimp pan roast. Anything that starts with a base of cream, well, I'm all over that. Decadent. Nothing could better describe each and every bite of that pan roast. Perfectly seasoned, the shrimp perfectly cooked, it was truly a thing of beauty and my tastebuds sang out. We loved sitting at the bar so we could see oysters, pan roasts and stews being prepped/made to order. Very cool! It's a don't miss when you're in the neighborhood, especially on a chilly day.

I love going to this place with my mom. We both are big fans of seafood and they have a great selection here. I especially love their oysters and the fact that they have such a great variety of oysters to choose from!!

Another fantastic seafood place in NYC. The convenience of being in Grand Central station has it's positive and negative points. First, the location is an easy one if you're coming in from Westchester, but the con is that sometimes it's overcrowded with tourists and travelers, and the working man or woman. Good food and a good place to stop in for a drink.

I've been going to the Oyster Bar for 10+ years and have never had an experience so bad or humiliating as the one I had today at lunch. After waiting 45 minutes for our food, we got 1 of the 2 dozen oysters we ordered and were missing the panroast. The oysters we did get were an incorrect order and looked as if they had been sitting out open for quite a while. When I complained I was met with a resounding "Aaawwww" from the entire bar staff. Upon complaining to the management they nitpicked our check and were inept at resolving or addressing the problem. Sadly I feel as though this is a NY Classic in name only anymore and in all my years of eating in NY have never had an entire waitstaff humiliate me in such a way. This ranks in the top two worst dining experiences I've ever had in NY. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

You will love this restuarant for the wonderful fresh seafood. Oysters, clams, mussels, many and varied fish dishes, they are all wonderful. The atmosphere is wonderful, below Grand Central Station it is a beautiful restaurant. If there is one complaint, it is that it is very noisy, hard to avoid in such a large and busy restaurant.

I love the space that houses this restaurant. Huge tiled arches under the glorious Grand Central Station. The oysters are outrageous but they have other things for those leery of raw seafood. Burgers for one.

a ny classic - you'll never go wrong here. a bit more on the formal side but very very tasty. i've had several seafood dishes here, all of which were top notch. will have to revisit to provide more specific commentary.

I am in love with this place! We came last week and mixed green salag with beefsteak tomato- - SUPER GOOD! You have to get it when you go! I had the broiled Florida red grouper filet with
peekytoe crabm and pancetta eat wine sauce, 5 grain rice and tiramisu and it was AMAZING! My friend had the lobster and it was just as good (but mine was better). I cannot wait to come back!

moderately hung over on a sunday? Well go somewhere else, can't help you. I want the window seat at Grand Central ! You can't have it. Sitting here with the friendly staff, yummy crab, and wine just made my day.

Dreadful experience. One appetizer did not appear. Mains arrived cold with accompanying dishes (spinach, french fries). We all had ordered fillets of various fish. told the waiter they were cold. He took them away and left the spinach and french fries on the table, presumably to get as cold as the fish was. Back came the main courses. Same pieces of fish that were now hot but so over-cooked they where inedible. Accompanying dishes were by now stone cold. Sent them back to the kitchen.
We decided then to complain to the management who it turned out basically couldn't care. Called for the bill which came up with all charges included. Couldn't believe this. Couldn't wait to get out of the place.
NYC has sooooo much better to offer than this sad place

Cons: The food, the price, the service

In NY fresh fish is nothing special. What this place does with it is a crime. The Oyster Bar is a NY institution but sadly its reputation is all based on the past. Today the place is an over-rated, over priced tourist trap. Poor service on top of the poor quality of the food adds insult on top of injury. Hopefully the place will shape up one day and become the treasure it once was. For now though leave it as buried treasure.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE - HORRIBLE STAFF - DISGUSTING FOOD OTHER THAN THE OYSTERS......
STAFF: the staff is part of the union and believe they are untouchable - and it shows..
1/ after ordering some wine by the glass the waiter didn't return within 10 minutes...we tried to ask the other waiter who at first pretended he did not hear us
we then waived our arms to see how far this idiot will go to ignore us
he then could not get away, we asked him about our drinks he didn't even answer but point out with his finger that the other guy was the waiter
2/ as those idiots were rushing everyone to go home - they dumped our main courses while we were finishing up the oysters
3/ sole!!!!!!!!!!!! badly prepared - vegetables - lol - disgusting
4/ the wine - besides the fact that we had to serve ourselves our own $200 wine bottle....the busboy another idiot came and took the bottle from our table while 10% of the wine still remained....i had to yelled at him to bring it back....he look at me like he was ready to start a fight...idiot
5/ then the desserts....we had to ask twice to see the desserts...waiters told us he will see if we can still order (it was 10 pm)...pecan pie, chocolate mousse cake....lol....we passed
6/ waiter rushes and bring the check...we leave $20 on a $400 check.....wanted to leave $0....waiter came to ask why?....idiot
Manager....was half asleep...never walk in the dining room....we didn't bother to complain to him...dude is close to retirement and just like all of them does not give a dam

My wife and I decided to pop in on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago since we were in Grand Central Station and had nothing planned for the evening. We strolled in and were seated immediately, but unfortunately the dining experience went downhill from there. We sat there for who knew how long before someone even bothered to offer to get us some water. While we sat waiting for service we went through the menu and it looked promising enough with probably the biggest selection of oysters I have ever seen. We ended up order probably three dozen oysters from the raw bar as well as an appetizer and a fish entree from the kitchen. My wife LOVES oysters, so I was shocked when I saw her gag on a couple of pieces. I can't remember exactly which ones they were, but they were terrible and she had to actually sp*t them out. The cooked entree was edible, but the fish was totally void of any flavor. We quickly finished up and asked for the check, paid and made a promise to ourselves to never dine there again ever.

If not for the prime location attracting the tourists (and the bored locals), this restaurant would have closed up shop ages ago.

Imagine this: A tourist trap that also has a loyal local following. That's how I'd size up this place. For the money, I'd really rate this place one star.

If you are a fan of oysters then I suggest you go here. You can eat the oysters right there with lemons and they are just wonderful. The place is huge and since it is near Grand Central the area is always busy. The oysters are fresh and very delicious.

I know this place is somewhat of a New York favorite but, honestly I thought it was average. I had the fried oysters, fried clam strips and chowder. The chowder was good but, have had comparable and the oysters nd clam strips were a bit..."overfried" for me. The arching, cavernous space would have been beautiful and it was something I was excited about, except for the fact that it becomes a giant tuning fork, echoing sound after sound through it's underground cavernous space. Some might like it but the food and the fact that it's just too loud in there, don't do it for me.

This was the first real disappointment I?ve ever had in Manhattan. The mediocre food and poor service was not worth the 40 minute wait at lunch.
The real deal-breaker was that the wait staff was just too busy to: even finish taking our order without my walking over to his station to remind him; bring us some crackers or bread before the meal for a young nephew with low blood-sugar; bring our entrees all at one time (no apology or acknowledgement); bring my oyster appetizer until after my entree was served; or to describe the selection of oysters in my appetizer when it finally arrived as he promised he would do. Because service had been so poor up to that point, I asked the waiter to remove the entree until he served me the appetizer. He was belligerent and walked away while I was still talking to him.
As for the food, the other folks at my table generally said, it was 'OK', but not anything special.
The experience was something I would have expected at a bus station, but not Grand Central Station.

I really enjoy this place .It does have some small short commings once in a while ( very busy, very loud) .The food is great and you do pay alot for it. If you want to wolf down raw oysters and clams, then get ready to do major damage to your wallet .I now live in the northwest (oregon) and can get the same food for about 1/3 the cost in our seafood houses . The menue at the Oyster Bar is hard to beat . Try it once and see what you think .

A good friend of mine was moving out to SF so I decided that the Grand Central Oyster Bar would be a good send off restaurant. It was a place where we had always talked about trying but never did.
I had my doubts after reading so many unflattering reviews but decided to forge ahead anyway.
We were fifteen minutes late for a 7pm reservation on a very crowded Monday evening but we were luckily seated promptly. The raw bar offerings are excellent. Very tasty. Fried osyers are delicious too.
The actual entrees? A tad on the pricy side for mediocre (and possibly frozen not fresh) seafood.
My friend had very sandy and dry scallops. I had corn meal fried shrimps but the batter overwhelmed the shrimp taste. The bus boy was great in removing our empty plates and refilling our water glasses. Our waiter could have been more attentive but he was by no means as terrible as some of the other reviews make out the wait service to be.
While it was a decent dining experience, I probably won't go back for the food unless it's just to for a beer and some oysters at the bar.

We had a lunch on 8/27 with our very important guest.
Rite after our main dishes were served, our waiter came and asked if we are going to order dessert. (This is when we just started eating) We said no, so he brought our check while we were eating our meal. And he came to check if we took care of the bill. Again, this is just when we started eating. Still eating.... He came back again, and checked if we put our credit card on the bill. Even some of them were still eating, I didn't want him to come back again, so I put my credit card in the bill folder. Right after I did it, he came back and took the bill folder away. And he came back with a pen and receipt, and asked me to sign even though I was still eating my main dish. I could tell they wanted us to leave. And I don't understand why they want us to leave. I still gave them 18% of tip, but now I really think I should have given them any. Because of this awful service, our day was ruined, and we were very embarrassed in front of out guest. Food wasn't that great either. I don't understand why this restaurant is popular among some people. We will never return here, and I would NEVER recommend eating here.

If you want to step back in time a bit stop at the Oyster Bar for a drink. As for the service and food - neither will sastify. The lobster cocktail was small, tasteless sections of lobster thrown onto a plate. The oysters were flavorful but not chilled enough. The mussels were tiny and in a bland white sauce. The artic char "broiled, with three caviars" was served cold (and without the "caviar"). When I asked the waiter if the fish was supposed to be cold he said "yes" as he hurried by. It was also tasteless. The Bigeye tuna was a nice large portion and although it had a nice flavor (hey, how hard is it to ruin tuna?) it was over-wasabied. The cocktails were served in tiny glasses (3oz...40z?) and at $12-$13 .....well you get the idea. There are far too many other restaurants in Manhattan that serve much better seafood, with better service, than the Oyster Bar. Stop in, take a look at the ceiling...and leave.

We had a dinner here on 7/26. Although we had a reservation at 5:30PM, the front clerk did not check the reservation list when we mentioned that and just direct us to go to the saloon saying they would take care of us, but the staff in the saloon had no idea about our reservation and instruct us to return to the front. It was embarrassing for us to back and forth in the restaurant. When I told the front clerk again what happened at the saloon, he reluctantly had one of the staff brought us to the table. We have never experienced like that anywhere in the world. Fortunately, our waitperson was very nice and foods (Ipswich Fried Clams and Cooked Oysters) were OK. But we will never return here due to such a mean front guy.

The ambience in this storied NYC eatery is great, but be prepared for noise (especially if you are seated next to a gaggle of secretaries out for a TGIF party). The food is so-so. I had the swordfish, which was not fresh. It was neither tender nor tasty and was a big disappointment ($30). When I asked if I might swap the starch (mashed potatoes) out for a small salad the answer was a flat "no"; not even an "I'm sorry sir, we cannot make substitutions. Can I suggest......"

So I had to settle for extra boiled vegetables, but judging by the very small serving size I am certain all they did was omit the starch and add a carrot or 2. This turned out to be OK, because the boiled vegetables were pretty much tasteless. My father had New England clam chowder and fish and chips, which he said was good...........forgive my snobbery, but how do you screw that up anyway? The service was well on the gruff side. Not courteous at all.

So to recap, this would be a good spot to dine if you have missed your train, love eating in old train stations, think of fish & chips as "seafood" or just want to say you've been there. And the place is no bargain. If you want 1st class seafood, avoid the Oyster Bar.

Pros: Very attractive interior

Cons: Below average seafood (unless you call fish & chips "seafood"), noise, gruff service, high prices

We have been coming to the Oyster bar for over 25 years and have never been disappointed.
The Star here is the Raw bar and the Oyster selection is second to none!!!.I have a preference for the West Coast varieties,in particuliar Gold Creek,Belon and Rocky Pass from Washington State. Cold ,Briny and very plump..simply outstanding!!!
My wife prefers the Mussels in White wine and the Mixed green salad with Beefsteak Tomatoes which I always order. The cooked Seafood dishes here are good but not outstanding. The Shrimp and Salmon dishes are good but not eye-popping.
The wine list is very extensive and has some good values. Service depends on the night you arrive. We were just there on Good Friday and made reservations as the place was packed.
If you have never been here before there are 3 elements to the restaurant .A Saloon, a sit down cafeteria with stools and the main dining room. I prefer the Dining roon for the people watching although it can get very noisy!!!!
We love the oysters here and have recommended to family and friends alike and no one has been deisappointed. A must see when in New York!!!

In my opinion, this is the best seafood I have ever had in my life! I was so satisfied with this dining experience that I requested to meet the Chef to congratulate him. It was an honor to meet Culinary Institute of America graduate Chef Christopher Arevalo and thank him for my delightful dinner. It was a pleasure to meet such a delightful, talented and cordial young man.
To those critics who mention the noise in this restaurant, I have to say that this is not supposed to be a "candle-light romantic place" (even though I found a quite romantic atmosphere.) If you are avoiding the noise, you must realize that The Oyster Bar & Restaurant is a first-class restaurant located in Grand Central Terminal where thousand of visitors pass through every day....What do you expect? Anyway...I highly recommend this place because of the freshest and best tasting seafood I have ever had!!!!
I highly recommend the Grand Central Oyster Platter or Oysters Rockefeller; any of their soups (Marsaillaise Saffron Broth was "out of this world"!!); and the Jumbo Shrimp in Coconut or their famous Tuna Bigeye Steak. Oh....Almost forgot! Gotta have a cold mug of a Blue Point Pale Ale from local Long Island to end a magnificent dinner experience.

Love the food - always fresh and tasty. Service is almost always good, although they tend to be on the busy side. Everytime I come I have to try all the best oysters (I prefer the West Coast ones). And the desserts are great too. Can be noisy, try not to bring kids.

I used to come here as a kid where my mother ordered fried clams and french fries. I always loved it but later on gravitated toward the Oyster Bar at the Plaza and hadn't been back for years. With the passing of the Plaza (my heart is forever broken), I came back to the Oyster Bar at Grand Central. What is wonderful is that IT is still the same...the noise, the din is the same as ever and that is what is WONDERFUL about here...the food is still FRESH and COOKED TO PERFECTION. The waiters are good and the place is even BETTER than I remember it. Tourists can't appreciate it but it is old time New York that is fast disappearing...go if you have some romantic notion of New York...stay away if you do not. Go if you are a fan of seafood and KNOW how it should be cooked. It's still a FAVE.

Cons: rather pricey, noisy

I took my mother to the Oyster Bar this Friday night for her birthday dinner, as she loves the old-timey New York feel of it. I'd made a reservation for six p.m. for the two of us. There were many empty tables for two when we arrived. The Maitre'D seated us next to a couple that looked like they'd had too much to drink. When I requested a different table, the Maitre'D very coldly and rudely told me the other tables were reserved. When I told him that we'd made a reservation as well, he said he knew that and this was our reserved table. He also told us that they could put us on a wait-list for one of the other tables (which were empty! And remained empty during our meal)! Our waiter was also very condescending and I think an actor-in-training - he was very theatrical with us. And sure enough, during our meal, our neighbors got so drunk that they started making out in front of us. One climbed into the other's lap. It was funny but horrible. Needless to say, we skipped dessert. I would NEVER recommend eating here for dinner / in the dining room. Only at the counter for lunch.

Pros: Delicious, straight-up very fresh seafood. Amazing shrimp.

Cons: Horrible service and seedy dinner clientele.

This grand dame of restaurants remains a favorite. It provides 4 separate types of seating to fit your mood (counter, dining room, quiet back room, and oyster bar itself), has easily the largest and most varied selection of fresh oysters in the city, and has a menu that meets virtually every seafood lovers desire and price point (the pan fried at $11 is a meal in itself). Above that, it has an INCREDIBLE wine list that, unfortunately, gets overlooked due to its length, with a bunch of rare and wonderful wines (Stony Hill, anyone?), and enough great wines by the glass to satisfy any oenophile. The low ceiling makes it a bit noisy, but it adds to the character of the place.

Pros: Quality of the seafood; wine list; knowledge of GM

Cons: noisy, but back room is much quieter

After hearing so much about this place, I was rather disappointed. While Grand Central Station is a wonderfully constructed, architectural wonder I felt somewhat like I was on a picnic. The red and white tablecloths and paper napkins just didn't sit well. The restaurant is quite noisy and the the menu is like reading a novel. Besides the length, 15 items that were noted on a daily updated menu were not even available. The seafood is fresh and good but for the atmosphere - pricey! Don't waste your time on the Creme Brulee.

While the oysters, Maryland She-Crab Soup (Tues & Thus only), Coquille St. Jacques and Caesar Salad with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat and Jumbo Shrimp are great, the ambiance sucks. I've given up on the dining room and always sit at the counter because I get what I want and quickly since its near the kitchen outlet and the server is always bustling through. In the main dining room, finding your waiter is Hell and aside from when they take your order and bring the bill, you'll rarely see them. I've also had issues with idiot maitre d's who suddenly find my plain, unadorned baseball hat objectionable out of the blue (there are no signs).

Space is like half coffee shop, dive bar and canteen. Very unappealing environment and almost factory like. Service is very curt, almost like the service in most chinatown restaurants, and always busy. Servic is fast. BUT, raw bar is what keeps us coming. They had decent wine as well. Other than raw bar, the menu is not so great.

I was very exicted to go here but was extremely disappointed. The staff was among the rudest I've ever encountered. Our waiter was horrible -- he spilled our drinks on the table, dropped a dirty knife onto my lap, never came by once to see how we were doing, never refilled our drinks and was in general quite rude in his demeanor. We also made reservations but were still seated an hour later, so I'm left wondering what the point was to even make the reservation here. The oysters were fabulous, but honestly the "cooked" food was not that great. Our broiled salmon was good, but the hollandaise sauce was lumpy and cold, the veggies were undercooked and the clam chowder was more like a clam broth. Spend your money somewhere else!

Pay close attention to the editorial review. Stick with the raw bar and cold food and avoid anything cooked. My bigeye tuna was nowhere near as good as a homemade dinner, for example. The service was atrocious. I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say that we lost our waiter for 45 minutes with nary an apology.

Been there quite a few times, because my out-of-towner friends insisted on going. The oysters were good size, but warm(!), the service non-existed, packed, loud. The decor is good, but then you'll have to pay for it. I don't understand how this place can call itself a seafood restaurant. Their fried calamari is worse than Long John Silver, chewy and not cripsy. The tuna is tired. The Maryland crab chowder is the only thing to look forward to (only on Tues & Thurs).

I'd say, go there once, go there for a drink and snack. And if you get good food, consider yourself lucky.

What a waste! With so many truly great seafood restaurants in this city, it's almost sad that this place stays in business. I am not an oyster fan, so the raw bar portion of this place is lost on me. According to my friend, though, the oysters were the only decent thing about the meal. Both of our entrees (sole for me, bass for him) were obviously made with pre-frozen fish (mushy texture), poorly cooked and poorly presented, not to mention ridiculously overpriced. The ambiance was terrible - loud, crowded, hoards of children, tacky checkered tablecloths, etc. If you want to eat here to say you've seen it, have oysters at the bar, but skip dinner!

The structure of this restaurant is nice to look at but the food was garbage. We started with the calamari which seem liked it had been cooked in motor oil. As a main course I had the salmon hollandaise which interestingly had no hollandaise sauce on it. The salmon and side vegetables were dry and bland. The only time we saw the waiter was when she took our order and brought the bill. The waiter did not take a drink order from us. We would have had a better meal in the grand central food court with the same setting and atmosphere.

What an oyster list to choose from! This place can be very loud, try and score a bar seat under the lower ceiling in order to talk normally to your companion, if you are okay with oysters and apps only. I will go back again and again to satisfy my oyster fix!

Don't expect a superb dinner here, but it is a great place to run in and grab a bowl of chowder or some terrific oysters. Have a beer or a glass of wine. Slurp it down, then catch your train. That's what the Oyster Bar is all about, and it does a great job at it. Ask the guys behind the counter to make up a half dozen or dozen of what they recommend then just relax and enjoy.

Every visitor to NYC and every NYer should visit the Oyster Bar at least once. It is a classic, the space, with it's combination of grandeur and cheap diner is fascinating and the oysters are fantastic. Simply put, stay away from anything cooked here - it all tastes like it came out of a jar or a microwave box. But do grab a drink in the Saloon and ask the knowledgeable staff about the large daily selection of oysters. Great place for people watching too.

Sadly, I had high expectations. The 1st 2 dishes we ordered they were out of. We were on a wait list, yet they sat couples ahead of the 2 of us. Noisy, crowded--our server took our order and the next time we saw him was the for the bill AND he watched us fill out the slip. Food quality did NOT match price. I was SO disapointed.

I think one has to get lucky here - with the quality of food & svc being irratic. been here twice, 1st time was great (oysters/clams & shrimp entree, chowda). 2nd time disappointing. svc is old world - men who do their job but don't hustle & not friendly, a little sloppy & it's noisy & a tourist spot. SUM IT: try if you must, oysters are their main attraction. then you decide if it deserves a 2nd visit. Pikachu is hard to please if you read it's other reviews but this place does get mixed reviews.

Went there on a rainy day whim last night as I was in the area.

The arching tile and wood panel siding make you feel like you'll walk out of there and hop into a checker cab on the way to your classic six on the Upper East Side, or jump onto a train to your awaiting cape in Yonkers. The three-martini hat wearing sort of vibe. A nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

The food was good classic fare. Everything simple. A solid meal, but it didn't come cheap. Worth checking out.

I love oysters, but I hate the oysters here! You scoop it in your moth and you end up with a mouthful of sand, dust or minerals.

The butter cubs were like ice. I can't stand it when you try to spread the hard butter on your dinner roll and the roll falls apart because the butter was so frozen.

The clam chowder tasted like Campbell soup. Actually, Campbell soup was better.

The fish was bland and even the steamed vegetables tasted bad. Don't believe the other ratings or reviews.
