Excellent Thai Food

by Kristen Y. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,172

The restaurant is small and a bit congested, but the food is excellent. The food is a bit more bold in flavor than many Thai restaurants that I've been to. The presentation is colorful. The restaurant can be loud during the lunch rush, so I find I take food out more than I eat in.

Yum Yum Indeed

by Anuschka B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,551

This restaurant is a little confusing because it extends over into another storefront but it's worth the confusion, I'd say.

The interior is a little small, but the waitresses are very nice and helpful.

The bathroom was not so nice. It was tiny and just not the best.

The food was as good as any other thai-fusiony-style food I've ever had. I got some kind of fake duck and it was good, my friend got a soup that was crazy-spicy. Not for people, pregnant, nursing, or prone to heart attacks.

It was pretty cheap too, I want to say between 7 and 14 dollars for a main course. We got dessert and it was good but not that great, however it was part of a three-course dinner special for something cheap like 12 dollars. Well worth it.

good budget food but get a good waiter/waitress, no parties

by passionformac

I know the owner don, Ive been going here for 4years and i had good times. I decided to have a party at the place and I was stuck with joe-waiter/acting manager. the food was decent but the service is horrible.

joe- cant count his calculations correctly with the check
- speaks not good english
- horrible customer service
- ignores you when you need food/ orders of drinks
- embarress you in front of your friends if you bring a drink and not talk to you aside even when we agreed that the party can bring drinks.
- he promised me 2 waiters and they never were there i had to constantly look for them
-never gave appetizers for the drinks that was purchased which was over $150-each drink gets a appetizer****
-he cannot handle 22 people for the party
- embarrases you when its your party in front of guests
-he couldnt handle the party that he called don (after telling me that hes in thailand and wont be back until augest) don said ok.... you can have your drinks.

i spent total 350 plus drinks total 500 for a f----- service that was never delivered.

don(owner) your a great person but joe is not a manager that i would trust.

Pros: good deal on food

Cons: joe the waiter

Good Thai in a neighborhood full of Thai

by DavideSky2

One of the better Thai places in Hell's Kitchen, the menu here is your basic Thai, but the decor is fun with an HD TV off in the corner frequently showing ocean documentaries (look for the baby sea turtles!), and just a nice, low-key mirrored look. Cute straight and gay couples on dates abound, and the service is reasonably attentive. The food is generally good, although the same entree can occasionally vary in quality and portion size.

Can't beat it!

by Bryan29

Wonderful experience!! The staff and food were far beyond expectation. My wife and I were recommended this by an NYC local. My advice to all travelers....talk to the locals!! Inexpensive and delicious!!

Pros: Service

Trendy and pretty good, slightly pricey, good service.

by wisebrain

This place is very trendy, the different rooms have different feels. The price is moderate, it looks like the prix fixe is a good deal.

one hour and twelve minutes to delivery three blocks away.

by wagnermello

I was completely disapointed... One hour and twelve minutes to delivery a food three blocks away from the restaurant is ridiculous. I called to complain and after whoever ansewered the phone hung up on me three times his suggestion was " the place is busy and you can warm up your food in a microwave..."
No commments about it!!!

They say it is the best Thai food - it is not

by wavecat

It reminds me of the old Ford Motor Company slogan - the best built cars in America, when in fact most knowledgable people thought they were the worst. There are number of very good Thai restaurants in this neighborhood - i.m.o. go to one of them instead. Portions are small, dishes are over-sugared - this place was a disappointment.

amazing green curry!

by dmoorjani

so i've enjoyed green curry in many thai restaurants in nyc and, of course, in bangkok! This place will give anyone a run for their money. The green curry has that slightly sweet taste and the thickness of the curry is just right! ...with tofu, shrimp, or chicken, you won't be disappointed! ok, so everything is really good an it's fun, reasonable, and brings in a fun group of hungry patrons this place on 46th and 9th ave. btw, the thai iced coffee isn't bad either :) oh, by the way, try the pad kee mao (sp?) and other noodle dishes! The pad thai is great, but i've found better in bangkok (maybe an unfair comparison ;) Also, yum yum is a great take-out and delivery find as well...a local favorite!

Pros: green curry, fun atmosphere, fast & reasonable

Cons: not that upscale (actually a plus in my book)

Terrible customer service and inconsistent quality of food

by mlarm

Delivered a wrong salad and then refused to accept that they had made a mistake. They then expected us to pay for their mistake. They actually sent someone to our apartment at 11pm (over an hour and a half after they delivered the food) to request an additional $5 payment. When we refused, they asked for the wrong salad they delivered to be given back to them. Absolutely horrendous customer service. This event, combined with their inconsistent quality of food, was enough to turn me off them for good.

Yum Yum is YUM!

by foodluvva

For the past 6 years, I've eaten at Yum Yum Bangkok and still remained one of the most loyal customers. Their dumpling appetizer, bbq shrimp, and shrimp pad si ew are the best I've ever had in New York. Considered that I am a native Thai, this is a serious compliment! I'm not sure why some people here left a bad review about the restaurant yapping over PRICEs and VALUE. The food at yum yum is VERY CHEAP already. For this kinda prices, services and seating are more than GREAT. Wait staffs are very friendly and attentive, generous portion of food, and of course, very tasty. Those who are so unhappy with it probably either are cheap people in general who leaves pennies or nothing for tip(#1 reason why people leave bad review on here) OR those who are way too used to posh overated restaurants like JEAN GEORGES or DANIELS (which i doubt they could afford). Anyways. overall value is spectecular and I would dine at yum yum and its 2 other chain right around the corner any day. PS TRY the new Mango magarita - the best in town!!!

Pros: Best Thai food in New york (compliment of a THAI NATIVE!), service, awesome drinks!

Cons: always busy

Safe food...

by latinjewel98

There's really nothing to rave about this place except the fact that they have good "safe" food given that along 9 ave there are many thai food restaurants. Small but cozy place with nice waiters. Try their dumplings for appetizer really good. Very inexpensive, good for couples or groups no more than 4. Will definitely go there again.

Good Thai food at GREAT PRICES!!!!

This place is a bit of a dive - but the food is good and the prices are great!

The pad thai and summer rolls are the best I've had.

Pros: Good Food - Cheap

Cons: Dirty Bathrooms

Yum Yum Thai Food

by b00pi3flak3s

Yum Yum B*A*NGKok sounds like an adult film title but its one of the most popular chic Thai spots along 9th Avenue. The pre-fix is a good deal, however, the dessert is the size of my pinky (no joke). Food is decent, but the portions are all semi-small, and great for people who are eating light but not good for the portion heavy folks like me.

Pros: Food, Service, Prices

Cons: Decor, Crowded

Best Thai in Hell's kitchen area

by tomtheman

I love this place!! the food is great and cheap? I am a regular customer since they only have like 10 tables. Now that they're expanding, it looks even better and more variety of menu to try!!

Pros: cheap, delicious, quick service

Cons: none

Just only cheap...

by bernarddan

The Yum Yum Bangkok is a catchy name that brought us there. We thought the food would be yummy as the name but very disappointing. The food was not that fresh as it was supposed to be. I even could not finish my food. Disappointed Thai food.

Pros: cheap menu

Cons: Not a good place to eat Thai food.

It's busy for a reason

by bigdaddy509

I just read that last negative review... I don't know what happened to that person but I've been going to all of the Yum Yum restaurants for years and I unreservedly recommedn them as some of the BEST cuisine -- not just Thai cuisine, but ANY cuisine -- of any kind in the city. It's inexpensive, the service is gracious and friendly, and the food is almost always delicious. Furthermore the menu is a bit different from the standard Thai fare -- exotic, tasty, and appetizing.

The only reservation one could possibly have is that the restaurants are frequently so busy that there is sometimes a wait -- but this is for reasons that ought to be patently obvious to anyone who knows New York. If it's busy...

Pros: food, cute waitresses, new interior/ambience

Cons: crowded on occasion

The worst Thai restaurant in the city.

by kenwatachiro

We went to have Thai food at yum yum bangkok last night. We were so disappointed about everything from the poor service to the worst cool Pad Thai noodle dish. We were asked about the gratuity after the poor service. The waitress was always forgot our drink orders. T

Great Thai food for a great price

by cwmmh

I've tried most of the Thai restaurants in the city and Yum Yum Bangkok is by far my favorite. It offers great food at reasonable prices. The waiters are very friendly and the service is quick and efficient. The decor has improved tremendously with the expansion of the restaurant. The food is consistently good: The chicken with basil is delicious and the all the appetizers are yummy. I recommend the chicken puffs and the coconut chicken soup. It's a great place for romantic dinner or for group dinners. They'll even put tables together to accomodate big groups.

Pros: Good service, Great food, Convenient location

Cons: Can get crowded

BEST IN THE WEST

by ryannagamble

Honestly, I am a pad-Thai freak, I have eaten it everywhere. This is some of the best. The flavor is incredible! I worked in the neighborhood for 3 years and ordered it once per week - the other food does not dissapoint either. Lightning fast service.

Pros: FRESH, fast, BEST PAD THAI!

Cons: not one downtown!

An okay place...

by pearlypg

I usually order in from this place, and I have to say that they are really very quick at delivering food. If I had to eat out, I would not frequent this place as much mainly because of the inconsistency in taste. For example, I ordered in once and the food was awesome and perfectly prepared. Another time, it was bland even though I had asked for it to be spicy, and it wasn't as tasty. The soup here is just okay. But spicy fried rice is delicious! So I would say overall good for a take-out/delivery in my area.

Pros: Fast delivery

Cons: Inconsistency in tast

The worst Thai food I've ever had

by foodaddicts

Honestly, the food was horrible. (I'm southeast asian, in case you don't think i'm qualified to judge!) We got the pad thai pre-fixe dinner. The pad thai we got was extremely baaaaaaaaaaaad; it was salty and the portion was small. It would be a decent deal if the food were not so horrid. The appetizer portions are extremely small. The only good thing about our meal was the coconut chicken soup. The service was also below par; the waiter actually spilled a dish on the customer sitting next to us. The decor is cheesy, especially the t.v. screen showing cockfighting.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: terrible food, bad service

Yum Yum = YUM!

by trevtnyc

The person that gave this place a low rating must not know their thai food, because this place has some of the best dishes and spiced wonderfully! Try the coconut chicken soup for a taste treat! Prices are excellent and the service is quick and very efficient! You can't get much better than Yum Yum Bangkok.....try it and see!

Pros: good, fast service, excellent prices, good, big portions

Cons: can be busy
