One of the best restaurants in Seattle.

When visiting a place, sometimes you make the mistake of assuming that a place might be good based on the fanciness of the menu. This is one of those places.

Although the menu is definitely fresh and new. None of the flavors I had seemed to pair well together. It was a huge disappointment.

Fortunately, Seattle is full of vegetarian options (especially up in the U district). As a vegetarian, I would not recommend having a meal here, our palates don't agree.

Carmelitas is one of the best restaurants in Seattle period. Although it is a vegetarian restaurant, I would feel confident bringing anyone here, knowing that they would truly love their meal. It's on the pricier side, but the ingredients are obviously selected and combined with great care and intention. I asked my server to make some recommendations for me and she did not steer me wrong. I believe she said she'd been there for 7 years.
I have not had a higher quality meal or more pleasant dining experience in Washington.

Carmelita is a wonderful vegetarian restaurant with an amazing menu of seasonal vegetarian food. I bring my vegetarian girlfriend here, and she loves the chance to order anything on the menu. I'm not at all a vegetarian, but I love the food here because it's unique and very tasty -- not just "take off the meat" versions of typical restaurant fare.

The atmosphere is similar to a Parisian cafe -- you don't feel rushed to order and clear out. Take some time to enjoy one of their appetizers. I recommend the Tomato-Vodka soup and the grilled corn-scallion beignets.

It is a little pricey, but flavor of the fresh ingredients really comes through and justifies the price. Also, give yourself 10 minutes to find parking. It's not very easy to find close parking, but there is always parking around within a few blocks.

My husband and I went on a weekday for dinner. It wasn't busy and we were seated immediately. Then we waited for fifteen to twenty minutes before anyone greeted us at the table. It took FOREVER to get anything. We ordered an appetizer, it took 30 minutes. This might be acceptable at a busy restaurant on a friday night. Not for a slow weekday. We were there for upwards of an hour before our dinner arrived. No one came to check to see if the food was acceptable. After we ate we sat for a long time before flagging down another server to get our check. Then we waited for an additional 15 minutes before that came. However, as soon as we got the check, our server became attentive, smiling and quickly bringing us the receipt. A sure sign of bad service is when everything you want takes forever to get to your table, but when you put the credit card on the table, the server perks right up and you get your receipt to sign in record time.
Now the food.. The appetizer was very good. It was a lavender dusted cheese plate with honey. That was the only good thing about the entire meal. My husband's food looked like it had come from a TV dinner, and my stuffed pasta consisted of a tiny amount of pasta and a HUGE plate full of sauce. I can deal with tiny portions if the food is good enough to make you want to savor it. Not in this case. It was on par with anything you'd order at the Olive Garden but with about 1/3 of the portion for 3x the price.
If you want good gourmet vegetarian, go to Cafe Flora. You'll be glad you did.

We chose Carmelita for my husband's birthday dinner because our past experience of healthy and very sophisticated food at Carmelita. This time however, the food was rather mediocre quality. Roasted cauliflower fritters were deep fried; fast food quality but about five times more expensive. The menu did not say that it was deep fried, I would not order it. Pumpkin risotto cakes tested like it had sugar added. I felt cheated of my expectations for the dinner, not mentioning that we paid a lot of money for our disappointment. Never again!

My husband and I decided to spoil ourselves our last night in Seattle and we were not disappointed. It is beautifully decorated and the ambience is perfect for a romantic evening. The Cheese Plate appetizer is divine! The Leek & Gruyere tart is delicious and the Paella is very flavorful. I also recommend the Spiced Berry iced tea (herbal). This is definitely not a good place for families with children. It is, however, a great date spot.

This is one of the best restaurants in Seattle. The staff is friendly, professional, and knowledgable. And everything on the menu is to-die-for good. (And I am not a vegetarian.) Lovely patio as well. Eat here.

i'm a carmelita regular, and i was there that night, eating dinner, and you and your child were extremely disruptive. this went on for maybe an hour? your kid was having a total meltdown, and you were absolutely not willing to take her outside, as you claim. i was on the other side of the restaurant and i could hear you singing, something most of us don't do at loud volume in nice restaurants. i overheard the table next to me asking their server to ask you to stop singing.
did you even consider taking your food to go? stepping outside for a moment to comfort your child, perhaps onto the back patio, a more suitable place to sing?
don't blame the staff when you are the one who put them in an awkward situation. the only way carmelita could be more kid friendly is if they put in a play area.

The food was decent, though not what I've had there in the past, but I'll never return after the irritation shown by the staff regarding our 1 year old daughter. Though not perfectly behaved, we took pains keep her as quiet as we could, while the staff, clearly visible in the prep area from our table, gracelessly gestured in our direction, rolling their eyes and indicating their quick patience for a family trying to have a meal together. When we softly tried to sing to our daughter in an attempt to keep her in a good mood, we were told to "Stop singing, it's probably bothering the other customers." It was a brusque and inelegant way to get your point across, and certainly made us feel unwelcome. None of the behavior of our family seemed to us inordinately disruptive, and as parents, we're quick to take a meltdown outside to spare the other customers. In this case, the staff could definitely stand some etiquette lessons. If you have a family, I'd DEFINITELY consider another venue. Try Saltoro's further up Greenwood, they seem to love families and have excellent food.

My husband and I--who dine out at least once each week--had one of the worst dining experiences ever at Carmelita's last Friday night. The meal began on a fine note, but when the entrees arrived, the meal fell apart.

I had ordered the semolina gnocchi, at the suggestion of our brusque server. After taking a few bites, I realized that there was no gnocchi on the plate; I was eating mush. I asked the server if the gnocchi was always served this way, and she informed me that no, the prep staff were having trouble making the dough stick together! "But does it taste good?" she asked, apparently oblivious to the look of digust on my face as she tried to explain why the "chef" thought it was a good idea to serve this mistake to customers.

I won't go into the details of how the server made a bad situation worse. Suffice to say that the current "chef" at Carmelita's lacks skills and judgement. Don't waste your money and time.

We had a romantic dinner here. The service was nice, and the surroundings were nice.

The food was pretty average in my opinion. I had the antipasti platter and my wife has the beet ravioli. Her food was nice but there were very very few raviolis. My platter had olives (with pits), baked garlic, goat cheese and also two spreads. The garlic was awesome, and the olive oil they bring for dipping is awesome too. What was not good was the rest of the plate - the cheese was dry and lacking flavor. The olives were fine. The two spreads were again not very tasy.

My wife has the tamarind-ginger lemonade, very nice.

As main dish, we had the cornrisotto. It was again lacking in flavor and there was hardly any corn.

I think overall for the money we paid we were a bit disappointed.

We love, love Carmelita. We went their for our first date and every anniversary (first date/ wedding) ever since. We couldn't pick another place as special.

The food is delicious and the wait staff delightful.

I'm new to town and was thrilled to find Carmelita. The ambience and decor were very nice, the service was good, and the food was EXCELLENT! I do agree with the other reviews that the prices are high but I didn't leave feeling like I was jipped. THe wine selection is good and I wasn't going to have dessert but got convinced and it was well worth it. I will definitely be returning to Carmelita!

I've been waiting for the right company to join me at this fine restaurant, after knowing about it for 2+ yrs! I finally got to go there for my birthday! The food was superior, we got to bring our own bottle of wine, and the wait staff was amazing! I am sad to report that my date was horrible company, but the wait staff made no issue out of his belligerent self, I got us out of there as quickly as I could. I will however return again to truly enjoy the carmelita for the great vegetarian extravaganza that it offers, hopefully in better company!

There are places one can go for dinner and just settle in like you have arrived in a hospitable friends living room. That is Carmelita. The dining room is warm and inviting, without being intrusive or pretentious. The waitstaff is informed and helpfull, the atmosphere relaxed and yet they manage to pull off the feeling that one is dining - not just eating out.
I love the food at Carmelita, especially the small plates, which lean heavily on seasonal, Pacific Northwest relevant ingrediants. I don't know why, but most vegetarian restaurants seem to excell in the small plates and fall apart in the entree department, failing for the most part to keep the excitment going in a larger more complex entree. Carmelita is no exception to that rule. That being said, I have had the mopst gorgeous, luxurious dining experiences there and will go back again and again.
Be warned though, it is a bit pricey - so recycle those cans and pinch those pennies and get thee to Carmelita!

Carmelita is a Northwest treasure. The patio is a lovely environment. The food is delightful, thought-provoking, whimsical... I disagree with the previous review: I thought the pricing and serving sizes were fair and hospitable.

Try the Conde de Valdemar Crianza Tempranillo with the crazy sweet potato entree...

This is such a terrific restaurant. My husband and I just went for our Anniversary. The food is so good, my chickpea cake was terrific and my husband's ravioli was very good. The bruleed lemon curd was amazing. I don't think the portions are small at all. I was so stuffed when we left, I couldn't even finish my entree or dessert, even though I really tried. The service was perfect, our server was so nice and helpful and wished us a Happy Anniversary. This is one of my favorite restaurants.

I dined here with another person on Saturday, so it was busy, understandably so. The person I came with in parapalegic, so he had a tough time getting through the dining area to our table. We waited over five minutes before our server acknowledged us, not even a hello before that. We ordered the empanadas for a starter. They were good, but for the price of $8, we thought that were getting more than two of them. Dinner portions were a bit small for the price listed. I realize that the menu is vegetarian and that can add to price, still portions were a bit overpriced. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for food that had more professional looking servers. A t-shirt is not professional.
After this critical review, I do want to say that the food and wine we ordered was excellent.

One of the (few) great vegetarian places in the Seattle area. Food is consistenly good, a bit skimpy on the portion sizes. Not a bad wine list, including organic choices. Two warnings- it's usually noisy so not romantic, and their online reservation system has been unreliable for me, make sure you get that confirming voicemail!

This was simply the best food I've ever tasted, vegan or otherwise. I had the ground broccoli cheese pizza with sweet tomato marmalade & raisins with olives.Wow. The service was fair to good, the desserts excellent. My friend thought her food was exquisite, but we both were glad to leave because of the God-awful high noise level ever heard outside of The Boeing Riveter's room, where at least one poor riveter a month goes screaming outside from acoustic overload. Too Darned Loud!

I have been dining at Carmelita for over 5 years and have enjoyed many wonderful evenings there with my partner, even before we had children. Now we have two, and have found the staff at Carmelita to be very accommodating, friendly and courteous. Besides they have a children's menu that actually has vegetables on it!

I find Carmelitas comfortable, casually elegant dining room as well as the food presentation to be a delight, but that is where my enjoyment of this restaurant stops.

My group sampled all of the main course offerings, and only the gnocchi got a positive review. The mains generally lacked imagination and were devoid of culinary interest.

The chickpea cake was presented beautifully and, though the cake itself was granular and bland, comes served with a tasty roasted garlic red pepper sauce. However, the cake comes topped with chutney that clashes with every flavor in the dish. This chutney is utterly revolting, and the chef should not serve it.

There are some menu items that are well worth a visit, however. Visit Carmelita for appetizers and dessert, but, to avoid disappointment, dont bother with a main course.

I don't think you could ask for a nicer vegetarian restaurant. The intricate and unique decor, plus the excellent food make this a great place to return to, even if you budget would only allow it occasionally. Although not too pricey, taking in a starter and dessert really makes for a special meal here, even if it makes it expensive. The front room is a little loud due to the tall ceiling, but I didn't find this too bothersome.

I am so thrilled with Carmelita... I'm a carnivore by design, but found the vegitarian dishes here to be complex and interesting, also, just plain delicious. One of the many downfalls of most vegitarian restauants seems to be a pre-occupation with meat and poultry. Carmelita seems to have lost this pre-occupation and focused on creating wonderfully tasty and satisfying entrees that would appeal to anyone. Perfect. My date and I were both so happy with service, atmosphere and food. I cant wait to go again.

Carmelita ranks as one of Seattle's top-restaurants; the fact that it serves exclusively vegetarian cuisine is secondary to this fact. Carmelita consistently whips up exquisitely delicious dishes with seasonal ingredients. If only this restaurant wasn't so expensive, I'd dine there regularly. Try the antipasti platter for appetizer and save room for the fabulous desserts.

Cons: expensive

The food is to die for. You taste each ingredient as though it's being both individually featured as well as thoughtfully combined and complimented by the other ingredients; kind of like eating stoned... and everything is fresh... (local and organic), beautiful presentation, the wait staff is friendly, the atmosphere lovely and the artwork interesting. The only thing that sucks is that it's too pricey to eat here all the time. But on the other hand that's what makes it a special treat.

We took my vegetarian brother-in-law to Carmelita when he was visiting from the Midwest and he appeared to really enjoy it. My wife and I are non-vegetarians, but we still enjoyed ourselves.
The ambiance was excellent (although the tables could be spaced a little farther away from each other), we still had room to chat and enjoy our meal (let's settle on calling it cozy).
The service was good and the food was presented very well (it looked delicious), but the taste (to me) was just "above average".
Overall, I'd have to say that I would recommed Carmelita to a friend, especially if you are looking for a good atmosphere with some panache.

My husband and I consider this our special restaurant. We absolutely love Dan Brauns creations and the service and ambience is wonderful. I recommend being seated in the cozy garden patio.

This resturaunt has extremely good food in a nice fun and clean atmosphere. You can eat indoors, or on the outdoor garden patio. Both vegan and vegetarian options. This is one of my top 3 or 4 favorite resturaunts of all time. It is moderately expensive, but well worth it. It is a good place to take non-vegetarians as well.

I agree that the citysearch reviewer is off the mark. I have been going to Carmelita for quite some time and I don't remember the tofu dish they review. It is time for an updated review. Having said that, Carmelita is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Not just by vegetarian restaurant standards, but by any standards. We returned from a trip to Europe recently and I kept comparing the (fantastic) restaurants we went to on our trip to Carmelita's menu. Some outstanding things we've had recently: porcini agnoletti with a sweet corn puree, roasted asparagus and baby potatoes with vanilla been dressing, portobello/creamed leek/fontina pizza, ricotta gnocchi with tapenade crouton .... hungry yet? You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The dessert that I keep going back for is a warm banana upside down cake. Top notch! If you haven't been yet, go!

I am wowed. Carmelita puts the lie to the notion that vegetarian food involves some kind of sacrifice or limitation. Their menu is far more creative than the average restaurant's, and the food is simply outstanding. I'm an accomplished cook, and it's rare for a restaurant to pass the "this is better than I could make" test. Carmelita makes it easily. A truly outstanding vegetarian restaurant, Carmelita is a lesson -- and a comeuppance -- to other vegetarian restaurants that think not using meat means using granola. Anyone, vegetarian or not, will have an excellent meal here. Prices are quite fair. The wine list is okay but has many holes and inventory problems. Service is occasionally brusque but usually outstanding.

Carmelita constantly stuns me with creative combinations of incredibly flavorful food. This is probably the best vegetarian restaurant I've ever been too and one of the best restaurants period. While not cheap, Carmelita consistently delivers beautifully presented, mouthwatering, seasonal dishes. The menu changes depending on what produce is available and in season and the owners make an effort to procure local produce whenever necessary. If you're on a budget, go for appetizers or a pizza and a dessert. The antipasto platter my favorite standby -- full of distinctive, flavorful cheeses, roasted garlic, a variety of cured olives and sweet roasted red pepper spread served with delicious, warm, flatbread. The warm chocolate muck-muck is a luscious, super-chocolatey dessert that will alone keep you coming back again and again.
