With an all-white color scheme and gleaming bamboo floors, this shrine to minimalism is worlds away from the bustling Chinatown streets outside. Push through a silver-beaded curtain to the well-appointed locker room, stocked with a dizzying array of luxe beauty products. Follow up with the Tru O2 facial, in which a skilled esthetician deep cleanses, hydrates and purifies your skin. The unique Tropical Rainforest Room is tricked out with sprinklers that rain down warm water followed by a shower under a stream of water that gushes from the ceiling. Though facilities are elegant and serene, spa-goers looking for a whirlpool, steam room or sauna will be disappointed.

Ratings_icons cranberries and pomegranates - wow!

I just went to Tru after reading about their new seasonal treatment and i gotta say I loved it!! The treatment is in their tropical rainforest room which is very unique. The body treatments smell amazing and they left my skin super silky and just glowing. It a pomegranate and cranberry scrub and body mask, they only have it for a few months so I'd call to get in there while it lasts! This was my first time coming to tru and i was impressed with every aspect of it. It's very professional and has a wonderful atmosphere. I will be back to try their other treaments soon because I've heard great things about their facials and massages.

Pros: Wet body treatments - cranberry

Ratings_icons My massage place!!

I get massages all the time and recently came here on the recommendation of a friend. It is only a few blocks from my work so it's awesome to stop by on a slow day or after work some weeks. During my chat with the therapist I found out they use shea butter instead of oil which feels great and turns out it has tons of benefits for my skin which i was able to feel after evena few days after my skin was still extra soft from the massage. The therapist really knew what they were doing and listened to what i wanted. I will be returning here for all of my future massages and recommend it to all of my friends!

Pros: Massage, Shea Butter, Staff

Cons: none so far!

I wanted to treat my BF to a massage for his birthday and did my research on Citysearch. I saw that this place was highly recommended, so I set up an appt for both my BF and I. My preference has always been a female masseuse, but there was only a male and female available for our appts, so I gave the male masseuse a try. I unfortunately forgot his name, but it was actually a good experience. My BF enjoyed his massage as well. The staff was very nice and helpful, and the spa was very clean. I can't wait to go back to try the other treatments they offer.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Extremely Clean

Cons: Downtown location, Parking

I just got my first facial ever and i can't believe what i was missing. I've always had pretty good skin, a little combination types but overall nothing to complain about. I'd never felt I really "needed" a facial. A friend bought me a gift certificate for the Tru 02 and kept telling me how much I was going to like it. I had no idea how great my skin could actually look and feel! I was this super fresh glow and my pores were cleaner than I've ever seen them. I'm sure there are a lot of grea facial places in a city like ours, but Tru has made me a believer in facials, especially their oxygen treatments. I loved it! The esthetician was very knowledgeable and friendly as well.

Pros: facials, technicians

Cons: i didn't learn about them sooner!

I come here on a regular basis for massages either after work or on my lunch break. They have very skilled therapists and have helped with my back problems over the years. I usually try to schedule atleast a week in advance so i can get the exact time i want, but even when I call last minute they always try to work the schedule out so they can accomodate me. This place is great, and the location is key.

Pros: Massage (105 and 75)

I recently stayed at the Hilton and got to experience Tru. The Citrus Sling Back pedi and double O mani were absolutely wonderful! My poor tired toes were totally rejuvinated for a night out on the town and they looked amazing, they even used my favorite brand of polish! I really enjoyed myself and plan to visit each time I come back to SF. Their staff was very accomodating and warm.

Pros: Citrus Sling Back

Ratings_icons Don't go to TRU. They ruined my skin!

elizabethsmith39

I have heard mixed reviews on this spa for several years but decided to give it a chance as I was in the city one afternoon and had some free time. What a mistake. Not only was the front-desk staff unfriendly but so was the person doing my treatment. I have had many facials in the past and this was hands-down the worst I have ever had. It was not relaxing at all because the facialist seemed to be rushing through every step. Also, she performed a microdermabrasion on my face that left me with some streaky scabs -- it took a week for them to go away and I still have marks. I am considering taking legal action against the spa if the marks don't go away, which they should, according to a dermatologist I went to see about this issue. He asked where I went for treatment and when I told him he shook his head. So perhaps I am not the first person with raw skin after going to Tru.

Pros: None

Cons: Left scabs on my face/Rude and unfriendly workers

I used to go to Tru when they first opened and during the hotel construction seeked other options (not the best idea I've realized). I went to others in the city that had good reviews, claimed to be top notch and of course had prices that felt like I would be getting exquisite services, but I was constantly let down. The construction is long gone and I'm back and more appreciative than ever. Their estheticians are great, the oxygen facial leaves my skin absolutely glowing and their massage therapists just keep getting better. I am not planning to straying again!

Pros: all treatments, personalities, location

I went to Tru when it first opened on a conf week from NY and thought it was one of the best spas I had ever been to. I have since moved to San Francisco and have been a regular customer for waxes, facials and massages. Its still a great spa but I have noticed a few changes on the negative side: the facial therapists have become quite pushy at trying to get you to have extra treatments and to buy products, I have no problem with them making suggestions but when they ask three or four times it gets a bit much. The waxing is also not as good as it used to be - they are using a new wax which the therapists need to almost pull at first to get a grip and its quite painful - none of them seem to be able to get the grip without causing some pain. On the good side, the massages are still first rate and hard to beat. I just want my favourite spa to be the same as it was last year!

I used to come here for the tanning treatment (they don't do it anymore) but now I stick with their facials and mani/pedis. I love the Moji-toe pedicure and the mojito drink they serve with it! I always have a very nice time here, the staff is great and I've never once had a bad treatment. I highly recommend trying Tru!

Pros: Mojitos! Facials

Cons: they don't do sunless tanning anymore

Ratings_icons LA girl loves it!

jenjohnson1111

I came to the city to visit a friend and she brought me here for an afternoon of treatments. Very good choice on her part. We each had their signature treatments which included and oxygen facial (Loooooved it!!), a 75 minute massage (also loved it!) and a pedicure that they served a mojito with and a great manicure. Was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It didn't have the over the top "frofro" feel that a lot of spas have, but you still felt pampered and the end results were great. I wish i lived here so I could come more often.

Pros: treatments

Cons: only 1 location

My girl friend actually brought ME here for HER birthday. She wanted me to share a spa day with her and had heard great things about Tru and knew that it was 'guy friendly'. We each had a massage which was great with some cool color light therapy that goes on during it. I don't know if it was just the massage or the combination of massage and lights, but i definitely left it feeling refreshed and energized. Then we met up in their rain room for the pairs polish - wow. I had no idea what to expect, but this would blowaway any expectations you might have. it's the most unique experience I've ever done. That alone would have been a great day. After the rain thing, we each had facials, which was fine and my girl friend keeps telling me how much better my skin looks so i guess it was great! We will be returning for any excuse we can find to do the rain room again!

Pros: rain treatment, massage, color lights

Cons: price

Ratings_icons Don't Go Here

relt

This is probably the worst facial I have ever gotten. I don't know what my facialist did, but I later ended up as a big scab on my cheek. I may not be a professional, but I certainly don't need to pay over $100 to have scab on my face that was a little smaller than an eraser tip. (I've had many facials and have never, ever had this happen.)

Not only was the extraction poorly done, unlike what other people say, it was extremely short. And my facial was less than the time I paid for.

Lastly, the woman in the front was very rude. Not exactly the relaxing atmosphere you would hope for when you walk into a spa. Go somewhere else. The cost does not match the service.

Pros: There are none.

Cons: Everything about it, even the smelly waiting room.

Ratings_icons Very odd experience

jmee

I bought my daughter a facial at Tru for her 15th birthday (special treat). We arrived, and the "housekeeper" (as they called her) took us to the locker room. She offered us each a glass of champagne, and I explained that my daughter wasn't old enough but I'd like one. My daughter asked for a glass of water and was told "we don't have water." At a spa??? Hmm. So anyway, after leaving the bare-bones locker room and going to the even more bare-bones and tiny waiting room, in came the "housekeeper" with two glasses of champagne. One for me, and one for my 15 year old. Eyebrows among others in the waiting room all raised, as my daughter doesn't look anywhere near 21. Our facials were fine (not fabulous, but fine). At the end when I was paying, I told the lady at the front desk the champagne story so she'd know that a 15 year old had been offered champagne TWICE, even after being told she wasn't of age. The response? "Most of our customers are at least 18, so she must have thought your daughter was older." I reminded her the drinking age is 21 and not 18, but at that point I realized they simply didn't care. What a strange place. I definitely would not go back, especially given how expensive it was.

My wife and I experienced our first "Pair's Polish" for our wedding anniversary after a co-worker suggested it. The experience was tremendous! From the sugar, honey/strawberry mixture to the steam and rain shower, you will be amazed and have a memorable experience.
After the "polish" we both had a massage performed by very well. I will be back shortly!

sandrasca

Even though I'm not a local to SF anymore I am staying loyal to Tru. I used to get the chance to visit them atleast once a month for a facial or massage on the weekends and would go often for waxing or pedi's on my lunch break as I worked a block away and lived within walking distance. Now i live in the east bay and have yet to find some place to replace Tru. I just love the overall experience of walking into their great spa. I've never had a bad experiene with any of their staff or treatments and don't expect I ever will. My two favorites are the Tru 02 and About Face facials.

Pros: facials, atmosphere

Cons: i don't live walking distance!

Ratings_icons really good facial and massage

mattsteele

I have been to Tru several times for massages and have always been pleased. I've had Rhonda and Christine, both were excellent therapists. After reading all the great reviews about their facials I figured I'd try one. This is the first facial I'd ever had and I felt kind of funny being a guy, but they tell me that lots of guys get them. (?) It was pretty relaxing, although never having one before i had no idea what to expect and when they do the 'extractions' it kind of hurt. But when i saw my skin afterward I gotta say it was worth it. I never realized how good my skin could look. Megan was my esthetician and she was really chill, gave a great massage along with the facial and was really helpful in ways I can keep my skin looking great. I think I'll still come back for massages more regularly but will definitely drop in for a facial a few times a year to keep up the progress they've made with my skin!

Pros: the service and treatments

Cons: sort of pricey - but not in comparison to others of the same quality

Ratings_icons Great Spa Day

michba

My daughter recently brought me here because it's her favorite spot in the city. I let her do the picking of what treatments I should get and I must say I was impressed with everything. When we arrived they greeted us by name and with a bottle of water. Then there was champagne brownies and fruit waiting for us once we got out of the locker room, I hadn't even had a treatment yet and I knew I was in a for a particularly nice day. I had a wonderful massage called the Full Monte followed by the most amazing facial, i believe it was called the About Face. My esthetician was wonderful and gave me a great massage as well as facial. I live in the East Bay so I don't come to the city too often over the weekends, but after experiencing Tru I will make it a point to visit more frequently!

Pros: About Face, Full Monte, Staff and decor

I received a gift certificate to Tru from a friend as a birthday gift. I'd never heard of it but thought a facial was a nice treat. I've had a few facials over the years but nothing I'd ever consider so good I'd invest in getting one on a regular basis. Well my opinion on facials has forever changed now thanks to Tru!! I got their Tru02, which was what the gift card was for and my friend was telling me how much I'd love it. She was right, it was wondeful, my skin was glowing afterwards and still is 5 days later. My pores have never been so deep down clean I'm very impressed. The esthetician (Katie) was very accomodating and explained each step so I really felt like I learned a lot about my skin and how to take better care of it. I'm a huge fan of Tru now and am looking forward to my next visit!

Pros: oxygen facials!!!!

Cons: I didn't find out about this place sooner

I came here with my girl friend for a pedicure (she keeps dragging me to places, but i gotta admit I'm liking them more and more) and this was a fun spot. The nail room is a private setting so guys, you don't feel like you're on display or awkward being surrounded by females. We had a few cocktails during the treatment which makes it fun, then we were able to head to the happy hour the hotel puts on. Great combo for an early work escape afternoon. While we were there we talked to some people about the couples treatment in a jungle room which sounded really cool so we're going to check that out next!

Pros: pedicures and drinks

I visited tru for the first time this weekend and was more than pleased with my treatments. A friend of mine came to visit and was staying in the new Hilton so I stayed with her. We decided to try the Spa and wow, what a great escape. We treated ourselves to a facial, the rainforrest room and a masssage....and it was wonderful. The facial was the best I've ever had, I was skeptical about the "oh so great oxygen treatment" they suggested but I'm very happy I had it. It left my skin glowing and looking beautiful. This is a place that has immediately went to the top of my favorite places in the city and I'm sure to be returning!!

Pros: Facial, staff, rain forrest

Ratings_icons Our cheeks were touching..

meow78

This place wouldn't have been so bad if the waiting room was bigger. The waiting room must've been about 6'x10', with seats for about 10 people (at the most). When I went there, the room was so full, our cheeks were touching! It wasn't so pleasant since we're all in our robes.

The locker room was also very small, with no privacy at all. There are no other amenities except for two showers; however, the showers were very pretty.

My friend had a facial, she said it was average. I got a massage which was very painful.

Definitely not worth the price, but the staff were very nice.

Pros: Nice showers

Cons: Small waiting room and locker room

I'm addicted to this pedicure. I go every other week either after work or on my lunch break to enjoy the Mojito Pedi along with a mojito champagne cocktail. I love the girls there, both the manicurists and booking staff, they're all very warm and friendly. I know I can get a cheaper pedicures at other places, but I feel the experience is totally worth it.

Pros: Mojitoes and Mojito's!

I love Tru's facials! The oxygen treatment is wondeful and my skin has never looked better!! I've been to Rachel several times and will never let anyone else touch my skin, this place is hands down the best in the city for facials. I recently tried the glamour eyes treatment before a big date and loved it. I wouldn't recommend doing that treatment for your first facial because it doesn't include extractions, but for a refresher between treatments, it's great.

Pros: facials, oxygen, Rachel!

I LOVE the TRU02.

It's the best facial in the city (trust me, I've searched). The staff really lets you know all about different products and what to use inbetween your next facial. There is some pressure to buy the products recommend, so be aware. Also, it's best if you come early.

Ratings_icons My Favorite Spa!

cscano

I've been to many day spas and Tru is by far my favorite. I started going to Tru for lunchtime Brazillian bikini waxes. Treatments like these are usually not the most "pleasant" but the skilled aestheticians and the hard wax they use make it so much more bearable...i will never go back to inexperienced waxers that burn my skin off!

Anyway the reason why I'm writing is b/c recently I got a lunchtime Peel. I was so skeptical...and scared...but it was always something I wanted to try. The treatment was incredibly relaxing, and was actually soothing, not painful. I was back in the office by 1 and my skin was NOT red. My cheeks and nose have never been so soft, not even with scrubs or other exfoliants. It was mild and not at all what I imagined from a "peel". I was very pleased, and got compliants for days on my skin. The best part was how it felt- soft as a baby's bottom. I will definitely go back to tru and am now considering other facial treatments. Well done!

Pros: Ambiance, Staff, Location

I've visited Tru several times and always get something different. I like the feel of this place, it doesn't have the sterotypical spa snootyness or fancy "Fro-fro" feel. It is clean and simple but very unique with a cool vibe. Great place to go during/after work since it's so close to the financial district. I would recommend this place to anyone for any of the services I've done which include massage, facial, and the rainforrest room (very cool). A friend told me they have a new - or new vamped massage called the Full Monte which is supposed to be great, that will be my next treatment.

I took my best friend here the weekend before her wedding and it was perfect! She'd never had a facial before and was worried about some blemishes she had. The Tru02 was amazing and left her skin perfectly clear for the wedding. She also received a massage and waxing, all of which were phenominal and left her totally prepared for the wedding. She was so happy we came here. I loved my treatments too but was thrilled that the bride was taken care of and liked her treatments since it was my wedding gift to her. Luckily I live in the city and am able to come back to Tru whenever I want, my friend lives hours away but is already planning her next visit to Tru!

My therapist was wonderful (Valarie) and made me feel so at ease I left feeling like a new woman! I have monthly appointments for facials but now I'm going to start switching off or doubling up during my visits.

I brought my family here during the super hot weekend to get out of the heat a bit before hitting the town during the evening. Although it seemed a little fancy for my father he ended up really enjoying himself. There were 4 of us and we had a variety of treatments. Everyone walked away feeling relaxed and satisfied. Massages was great, did the backstroke and my dad did the tru therapy 105. Facials were my FAVORITE part, i did the Tru02 and my mom did the about face, both of us were impressed with the results. We all did mani pedi's which were as fun as the names sound, Pepperming Pedi and Moji-Toe! Will be brining more groups here soon to share in the experience.

Pros: lots of treatments to cater to different tastes

Cons: products (actually a plus, I bought 3 things which are great, but it does add up $$)

Ratings_icons READ THIS! Terrible spa! Don't waste your money!

lilcingo

Ok, so a friend and I went to Tru in June for a spa day. We each had three treatments done . . . a message, a wet mud treatment and a pedicure. First of all, the waiting room was a small box, with uncomfortable seats and dirty walls. It later turns out my friend and I had the same massage therapist, Stephen. I can't believe this person even calls himself a therapist. He talked most of the time and he told me to "work through it" when I asked him (several times) to ease up on the pressure. I left the room thanking god it was over. My friend described her experience as having just gotten out of the washing machine. YUCK!!!!! I then had a great pedicure. No complaints there. Lastly, I had my wet treatment in the rainforest room. Great concept, but my therapist failed to give me any type of direction. After the water was turned on, it felt like forever before it finally stopped. That is only after the mat I was lying on slid off the bench. Great, I landed on my butt. Did I mention that it was extremely hot. Way to hot. I finally had to open the door to ask my THERAPIST for help. She in turn graciously pushed me back inside (again without any direction as to what was next.) FINALLY, I open another door and found the waterfall going. Again, way to hot. To top this lovely experience off, when I finally came out, my THERAPIST was standing there holding a glass of champagne. NO THANKS! All in all my time at TRU was a huge waste. To make matters worse I left without talking to the spa director. I finally, last week, left her a message to contact me regarding my experience, but to no surprise. . . I didn't get a phone call back. TRU is TRAGIC! After spending SEVERAL hundred dollars, I would have been better having a root canal.

I don't really consider myself metro, but i have to admit they do great manicures tailored for guys here. I got talked into coming for a visit a while back and now I'm a regular. It's close to work and easy to pop into on short notice (usually) since the treatments so short. I've also had massages here which are very good, but much harder to book the way I do which is last minute so I don't get to experience them as much as Id like.

I've tried almost all of their treatments except the rainforrest room (which is on my list to try) and really can't decide on a favorite. The experience itself is very cool but then to feel how silky smooth your hair and skin feel afterward, well no more wraps for me, I'm sticking with the rainforrest room. If you haven't tried it yet, you've got to get in! This is by far my favorite place for waxing in the city. They use the best kind of wax and there's no irritation or sensitivity after, it's great! I've been going for about a year and have experienced several different estheticians, all of which were good, quick and super friendly. They do tend to book up quick before the weekends though so you can't do it last minute for a big weekend, always try to plan a bit ahead so you can get the time you want.

Pros: Great wax and waxers

Cons: hard to get into last minute, but totally worth it in the end

Ratings_icons good for guys too

My girlfriend dragged me to Tru a while ago somewhat against my will. I'm glad she did, we did the pairs polish in their rainforrest area and it was a lot of fun. Then she treated me to a massage which was also awesome. They have a serperate waiting area for men where you can hang out and have a beer while you wait, this place definitely knows how to cater to both guys and girls. i will be visiting there anytime my girlfriend wants now, maybe even without her!

Pros: great for men and women, couples treatment is a must

Ratings_icons Truly my favorite!

I visited Tru several times a few years ago and loved them. Last year there was a lot of construction in their area and I mistakenly thought they were closed. I tried a few other spa's during that time and was not impressed, I'm so happy to be back at Tru! Previously I'd only had their facials, but recently I experienced the Tru therapy massage, it's great after a long week at work, a perfect way to wind down before (or after) the weekend.

Pros: Great overall services

Ratings_icons TRU-ly Fabulous

emmy414

My first time at TRU will definitely not be my last. I got the Pure facial, and my whole experience, from walking into the spa, to being escorted to the locker room, to sipping champagne in the lounge, to the actual facial -- was fabulous. I love the staff members' down-to-earth attitudes and the minimalistic vibe. Jill is a very knowledgeable and friendly aesthetician -- I am very pleased with my visit to Tru, thanks in large part to her skills :)

I went in for a facial during the weekday. The staff is not friendly at all. They just want you to buy their products. I have been to many spas and this place has the most rude staff of any other. However, the facial itself felt really good eventhough I left feeling a little greasy.

Pros: massage, facial

Cons: staff

Go there since a while; the facials are like heaven. Jen is highly professional.

Oh if only I had a million dollars...I would spend a good chunk of it on you, Tru. I've been there a few times now and each time it just gets better and better. I've tried their facials, waxing and massages and I have not been disappointed. Everyone was so nice and it was just a mellow atmosphere-- no uptight attitudes, just calm relaxation from start to finish. The massage therapists are so attentive and really listened to my needs to create a session just for me. My facials are crafted for your needs as well and the estheticians are so knowledgeable and talented. I also had a back treatment which was great, like a facial for the back and everyone can use that. The value is amazing and their treatments are 75 minutes rather than the usual 50 at other places. Definitely a major discovery and I am already booked for my next appointments! Hope this information helped you choose where to go.

Ratings_icons It is unfortunate

unctuous

I have been to Tru more than a few times. Every facial, massage, and nail treatment I have recieved have been wonderful. However, I have had some problems with making an appointment. The man that I spoke to last was pushy and rude at best. I don't know where he learned his customer service skills but they are serioulsy lacking. It is unfortunate that the talented staff at Tru has to be represented so poorly and if I wasn't already a loyal client I wouldn't have bothered.

Pros: excellent treatments

Cons: rude man, agressive booking

Ratings_icons There are MUCH better options

I have been to Tru twice. The first time was alright, but the second time totally broke the deal for me. My treatment started late (and I checked in about 20 mintues early), and it still ended on time. I understand at spa they have to keep their schedules on track and cannot go over in time when you arrive late, but it clearly was not my fault that the massage started late, and they still charged me full price even after i mentioned the situation. Although their atmosphere is definitely high-tech, it seems like their menu is super-similar to Bliss Spa (which has been around in NY and London much longer that Tru spa) and now there is a Bliss in SF (and it rocks!), I will stick to the original

Pros: pretty

Cons: location, menu, unprofessional

I've sampled Tru's facials, massages, and waxing. Their treatments are generally professional and high-quality. However, my 75-minute massages are often cut short, even though I arrive on time or early. Once my husband was shorted 35 minutes on his massage. It was not addressed by the staff; we had to bring up the issue when we checked out, and they acted at first like we were crazy. Then they talked with the therapist, and reduced the price without explanation. It was weird, and my poor husband left more stressed-out than when he went in. I only went back recently because I had a gift certificate, and sure enough, the heavily-advertised 75 minute massage was really only 65 minutes. Not a big deal, unless it happens all the time, which in my case it does for some reason. The spa lacks a steam room, and can feel cramped on the weekends.

Ratings_icons The best deep-tissue massage

contreras4

I was worried about getting a female massage therapist, but Rhonda was awesome! I had the best deep-tissue massage I've ever had; not too hard, not too soft. The price was a little higher than normal, but the overall customer service, champagne & goodies, and best of all incredible massage was worth it for me.

Ratings_icons I found the massage MAN!!

janii

Tried Tru for the first time because a lot of my friends absolutely rave about the place. I don't get real excited about massage, however, but my back was killing me and I have not found a place in the city yet that I really love. So I tried Tru and got Ulysses. He was absolutely amazing. I left almost too relaxed and a little worn out, but the next day my back pain was gone and I had more energy than ever. He does a lot of stretching which I think also helped. The place was as nice as advertised, and now I know why my friends like this place, it seems like they take care of every little detail. I have found my massage place and my massage man! Easily the best massage I have ever had.

Pros: champagne, warm table, parking

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Obnoxious Staff

rtjaan

There is absolutely no way that this place should be allowed to run a spa. the staff is rude, disrespectful, and obnoxious. they do not have the first idea about what a spa really means.
