I had an upsetting experience there (on a Saturday at about 10 pm. I don't want to blacken every shift).

I didn't have ID with me, just a credit card tucked into my phone case. I hadn't planned to go to a bar, I met a friend at a teashop but then he wanted to eat and all the non-bar restaurants were closed.

The waiter asked if we had ID and were we over 21. I said no to ID, but that I wasn't planning to drink. Then I said I was 48. He said, "You said no first". I said I was answering in sequence to his questions. He said "you have to get out of here".

I know some bars have a 'can't enter without ID policy' and that might have been the case here. I would have understood, said "thank you" and left if he'd been remotely pleasant about it, but he'd just called me a liar and told me to "get out of here".

I told him I could pull up the information on my phone fast (I'm applying for insurance and happen to have silly amounts of proof of ID currently open on my phone and it matches the information on my credit card). He told me, "I don't need the 2 bucks you're going to spend here. Get out of here."

It upset me. I'm used to people in general and waitstaff (which I've been) being nice. I had this fantasy I could get him to be, so I approached the counter and asked if I could talk to him for a minute. He said, "If you don't get out of here, I'm going to call the cops". I stood there, because I don't like being bullied. He picked up the phone and counted to 3, then put it down. I'd guess because his scare tactic hadn't worked and the police would have rightly consider the call a waste of their time..

I asked if there was a business card and he said "no, get out of here". I did at that point.

Granted, I'm a small female and look younger than I am and I didn't leave till childishly adding that I intended to leave a negative review. But the ugliness of the experience at a restaurant was unfamiliar and made me want to cry.

The best burgers ever. This place has huge burgers and they are great. If I'm not mistaken its the oldest bar in Portland. Great place to check out if you in the area.

This is a nice little place in a great location. Near good shopping areas and also near enough to the heart of downtown where you can grab a drink and a light meal before heading out to a movie or event at the crystal ballroom. I really enjoy the 23rd area and this is a great stop while in the region.

You can get a wonderful drink in here. The staff is always very friendly. You can hang out before catching a flick. Has a tendency to get packed on the weekends. Which only adds to the atmosphere.

Last night I was thinking I was going to have to go to Plaid Pantry for some late night munchies, when I ran into the Nob Hill Bar... I got a delicious sandwich and fries at like 1:30am! The place wasn't overly packed either, so I got quick service and a drink before I headed home to turn into a pumpkin... Very laid back bar compared to others around. There were a few bums arguing around out back, but that didn't prevent me from getting my munchies :) Hurray for good Foods :)

If you haven't been into this establishment for a bite to eat yet you're missing out, not to mention they now have a full service bar!!... This place is seriously open every single day at 8am and for how wonderfully good and cheap the breakfast is, it is beyond me why there isn't a line out the door..... I like to go there for the $3 Bloody Marys on the weekends and during the week I can pop in for a Streetcar Special (cheeseburger Yummy!, fries, and pop) which is actually ready with enough time for me to eat it and not be late back for work! It's amazing. Oh, and the waitstaff have good attitudes which is hard to find in this city. I say this place is worth checking out.

Of all the restaurants and bars that we visited in Portland, we definitely found ourselves going back to the Nob Hill Bar & Grill. Very friendly atmosphere and service. The bartender, Kale, is friendly, accomodating and easy on the eyes. If you're in town, do yourself a favor and visit this local hangout. You you won't be sorry!

Our waitress was warm, welcoming and attentive. The atmosphere is a wonderful contrast to the trendiness of most of NW 23rd (not that that's all bad). The burgers were a grave disappointment , and keep in mind the four of us had four different burgers. Two of us loved the onion rings and two of us hated them. Two of us hated the tater tots and two of us hated them. But we all agreed that the burgers were a bust. Might drop back in for a beer, but not for the beef.

Nobby's is a great place. I don't know how many times you've been, but everytime I go the staff if helpful. You should give it another chance.
Oh, and before you write something on the internet, make sure you take 6th grade english first. See, while constructing a sentence we rarely capitalize words, unless at the beginning or if it is a name or a place. And please use spell check, as I am guessing that you are not an 11 year old girl conversing with her friends through AIM.
Now that we've covered that bit, when you walk into a "seat yourself" resturant it's also a dumba*s thing to decide to sit at a table with dirty dishes when there is a clean table right next to it.

The burgers are ok - slightly better than average burger. The bar is a pretty typical tavern. Every time I've been there, however, the beer is lukewarm.

Hey the burgers are great but with the lousy service who would want to eat there. We went in on Saturday night and there were 6 other people in there. The bartender came up and said IDs please. I'm 47 and my partner is 45. No hello - nothing. He took our order, left and forgot to come back with our drinks. I walked up to the bar and he got up from a bar stool and asked me can I help you. I told him I'd like our beers and he asked me which beer. Then we waited forever to get our burgers - there was hardly anybody else there. So when we wanted to leave we waited and waited and watched the bartender sit there and watch the TV. My partner finally got up and asked him for the check which he said he already gave it to us. He then went and found it in the kitchen or maybe he wrote it out again - who knows - it took forever. They need a better bartender.

They claim to have the best burger in town...NOT A CHANCE! They say this because they "have sold more burgers than anyone in town"...so, by that logic, McDonalds has the best food in town too...the burger was mediocre at best, loaded with some mayo based sauce that tasted like vomit...topped with a piece of white iceberg lettuce and an under-ripe tomato...will never go back!

I'm a transplant to Portland from the midwest and passed this hole-in-the-wall on a recent shopping trip so I ducked in for a burger one Saturday afternoon. The ambiance is exactly as described, real people in a smoky bar. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with tator tots and when it arrived, I literally had to forage through the other items to find a very small griddle-seared beef patty which was very thin and very dry. I'm not certain if Steak 'n Shake (Carl's Jr., made to order) is considered good eats out here but that is exactly what you will get at Nob Hill Bar and Grill. Even for a dive, you would do better elsewhere.

Upon my recent visit to 23rd avenue we were lucky to stumble upon the Nobby on 23rd and Lovejoy. What a cool little bar in the middle of all the trendy shops and cafe's. Nobby's had that great feeling of a neighborhood bar where they might yell "Norm!" when you walk in the door. We were there when the place was packed and we were lucky to get a seat right away. I ordered a "Ambulance Chaser" and my wife ordered a double cheeseburger. These were the best burgers ever!! The coolest thing is you can order tater tots instead of fries - awesome!!!

I haven't got a bad meal here yet. Prices are reasonable. Burgers have always been great, but fries aren't very good. Sometimes it's taken a long time to get my order. Still gets 5 stars because it's the best burger in Portland I've had so far.

I had high expectations, and was let down. It is just a typical frozen beef patty ( at least it tastes like one ) with a lot of condiments on the plate. Nothing special, except their marketing campaign. Try going down the road to the Old Lompoc, where the beef is all natural and from Oregon, not the FREEZER! Also, this place apparently has smoking hours, so if you don't like to eat in a smokey environment, go during their lunch hours. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Decent place for a beer and smoke. But you can get a better cheeseburger at mcdonalds. No joke. Think Greasebomb. Old School place. Dirty. Dive. etc. etc. Not exactly healthy.

I just returned to the midwest from a visit to my daughter in Portland. Part of the trip was having a hamburger with her and her SO, my mother and my sister at Nob Hill. The burger and the beer I washed it down with were great. We all enjoyed our meals. The previous reviewer was right - they just don't get it. The food is good bar fare. Perhaps he or she was looking for something a little more snooty. You won't find "snooty" at Nob Hill. And if you want a great dessert, walk next door to Alotto Gelato.

If you love pig collectibles like I do, there are some HUGE concrete pigs right outside the door as a bonus. That made for a couple of good tourist type pictures.

Had the burger here with high hopes and I was disappointed to say the least. The burger is completely average, nothing specatular and not too far off of what you might get at Burgerville. A burger bummer as far as Im concerned.

Just like "CHEERS"! For this San Francisco Type Nieghborhood it is central to everything in the area and a great place to stop in any time of the day offering a family environment during the day and a relaxed adult atmosphere in the evenings!
The owner Greg Hermens also supports alot of activities and groups in the Portland area. Great job Greg and hope to see this place still there in another 20 years!!

Back in 1966 I had the pleasure of spending 5 months in Portland. I was in the Navy and our ship was in Willamitte iron works. The Nob Hill Bar and Grill was then called Nobbies( probably misspelled) and we had a most enjoyable time there. The next time i'm in Portland I will definately stop on for a beer. Glad to hear your still there.

A NW Portland staple. Friendly, interesting people; regulars and staff. Fine service. Typically tasty comfort foods. Windows on street scene provide views in the summer, including beautiful people and occasional nut cases. Cozy in the winter, though a tad grimy and redolent. Good Samaritan Hospital regulars at lunch, becoming more eclectic as the day progesses. A short but effective range of beers on tap. Bottles too. No mixed drinks. Fifty-cent tacos on Monday evenings. House mottos are "Tax Lattes Not Beer" and "Smoke Free 'til Three (p.m.)" Look out for your health after that. (Note the sign "This entire establishment is designated a smoking area.") Several TVs play sports with folks who diligently watch them. I love this place. A neighbothood tavern with good Feng Shui.

The Nobby burger has to be the best in town, it's an entire meal all by itself. This is a funky and fun place to eat, usually crowded with local burger and beer fans. Lunchtime is the best time to go, service is quick and friendly but at night it's grumpy (sometimes rude - my wife won't go at night) and slower paced.

It is a nice establishment to go to and relax, order one of those burgers, network with others in attendance and watch the latest game on the screens. I try and visit this place several times a week. I really enjoy the service, the food and location.

I live in the neighborhood and came across this place some time ago. The food is great and the prices are cheap compared to 23rd ave prices. I love the nobby burger, double patty with choice of bacon or ham, served on a huge toasted bun. It's also the best sports bar on the ave.
