So, I was stoked to see how much vegan food was on the menu. I ordered 'Trevor's potato burrito' (I thhink that's the name of it) and I was about to take a bite when I saw a hair on my plate. It wasnt mine. I picked it up off of the plate

I can't say enough about Ruth's, as it has been through some remodels in the past 'few' years but has maintained the original feel. Ruth's has a lot of atmosphere and history, I've been eating here for a LONG time!

The menu still has some of the original choices as a diner should, but don't be miss led by the 'diner' in the name as this place has some of the best cuisine around!

Location, Location, Location!!! Spring and Fall will drop your jaw! On hot summer nights come early as if fills fast.

Pros: Wide variety, great atmosphere

Cons: Too many people know about this place!

We were so excited to go somewhere new for a celebration. There were only 5 in our group; we were told the wait would be 35-45 minutes. Understandable, its a SMALL place. After quietly waiting for ONE HOUR I asked the hostess if there was something she could do, maybe push some tables together or anything, something anything. She shrugged her shoulders and said "Legally, no. You have to wait for the bigger tables to be done eating." After waiting 30 more minutes I asked again, she said no and sent the owner to tell us I was rude and asked us to leave! I have NEVER been more horrified in my life! The moral of the story, if you plan to go here with more than 3 people, expect to waste your day waiting in the way because there is only a small bench to sit on and keep quiet or they will ask you to leave.

I love the location of the diner. It is a short drive from downtown but feels so secluded. I love the ambience of the whole experience--- great food, good service, the relaxing music! No one in our group had any complaints about the food nor the service- it was perfect. The biscuits actually do live up to all the hype and the breakfast was amazing. Everything was prepared perfectly, presented well and portions were large but not overwhelming. They even had a delicious vegan breakfast burrito for my friend-- which she loved too! When we arrived at the height of brunch, we were told it would be 45 mins, but it turned out to only be 20 mins. We will definitely be going back for repeat visits!

went for dinner at 6:30 on a friday night and were SORELY disappointed. first off we could not eat outside unless we were at the bar, which is so dumb since we do live in a utah and it was 6:30! 75% off the charm of ruth's is eating on the patio. i ordered meatloaf which was dry, over seasoned, and really just not appetizing. i ordered a childrens meal with chicken fingers and they were so nasty that my children would not eat them. i could break them on the table and i think they were under a hot light for at least 3 hours. to top it all off we didn't get any of their famous biscuits because i guess they don't serve them at dinner. instead we got hard rolls from costco. ruths has ALWAYS been a favorite dining spot, in fact we drive 45 minutes to get there and i have to say i have no desire to return. ruth's spent 1 million dollars on remodeling and lost their taste buds.

Cons: food quality

This is a fun restaurant/diner with an interesting history. Unless you really look for it, you would never guess your sitting in the shell of a historic SLC Trolley Car.

The food is outstanding, portions generous and service friendly and prompt.

We've been for breakfast and lunch and I would highly recommend both.

I've eaten twice at Ruth's Diner. First time there was just two of us for lunch. Both of us loved the food. The waitress was great, not too overbearing but made sure our drinks weren't ever too low or empty. The second time I went was with my family, a large group of about 10 of us. There was a wait of about 20-30 minutes. When our time came up for seating, we had a wonderful round table that seated all of us and our waitress was very wonderful. She described some of the platters. We all ordered a range of breakfast and lunch platters. All the food was great. The appetizer bread was amazing -it was gone before our meals came and the option to get more if we wanted. All 10 of us loved the food. Nothing was askew or "gross" as some people have said here. Ruth's is unique and to me I'm always up for the hour drive it takes to get to it from Utah County.

A group of 10 of us went to Ruths for brunch one Sunday, of course there was the usual long 45 minute wait, which was fine. However when we were finally seated they for some reason didnt think all 10 of us wanted to sit together, the hostess had 2 tables for us on opposite sides of the restaurant patio, after telling her the seating wasnt going to work for us and some awkward standind around we literally picked up one set of the table and chairs and moved them across the restaurant to sit together. The waiter was nice but very slow, when our food was brought out he could not remember the names of the dishes let alone who they belonged to! The food was so so, there was no flavor, no spice, anything worth remembering about any dish really. When it was time to pay they informed us they could only split our tickets 3 ways, not the 5 we needed. Now I find it hard to believe that at any restaurant you can not split a ticket, if you can take orders seperately and put them in seperately then you can print out a bill with the item seperately.... I dont buy no seperating tickets for one minute! After some light complaining the waiter had us write our names next to the items we had and give him our cards so he could ring up each couple like we originally asked for. He couldnt even do that, one couples card was ran twice, the tickets didnt add up to the original total of the bll etc etc... Then the waiter proceeded to tell us "this is why we dont split tickets". Overall all 10 of us were unhappy with the whole experience and will probably not return. I, like many others that have reviewed do not see the extreme appeal of this restaurant. It was just one big mess from start to finish.

Most go here for the atmosphere. I wish they would work on their menu and change it up to get some better food choices. Breakfast is very good though.

We drove down from Ogden, on a saturday got there 15 min before they opened, no one else was around till 5 min before opening the doors. First to be seated, and after 4 other tables were seated and waited on
and the last table was waited on as soon as they sat down, and we are sitting there like ,they don't see us
well we just got up and told the lady inside that we were leaving because we were not going to be treated like that. To bad too, the reviews were what brought us here and the place was cozy looking and I really wanted to try the food, to bad there was no service. Will not go back.

The atmosphere at this diner is just as charming as everyone says, However the food is so aweful it doesn't taste nearly as good as the plates they serve it on! (YUCK) I went with a group of 6 adults and we all ordered different things and all of us were equally revolted with our meals. First of all they cover all of their tasteless overcooked food with the most nasty sauses, they were so bad we couldn't even begin to choke them down. They bring these hard, dry, heavy rolls to your table that would be more suitable as a door stop than something you might actualy eat. They serve this horrible rasberry cream salid dressing that does not even remotely taste like raspberry. The pot-roast had some weird flavored sause on it that just made it compleatly inedible. The raspberry chicken (one of their specialties) was as dry as a bone and also had a revolting NON raspberry sause. The pork chop was just as dry as the chicken (also with a bizarre sause) You know when a resteraunt is hideing all of their food under sause that something is wrong! There was nothing good I could say about the food here. After this meal all of us wished we had just saved the money and eaten at mcdonalds...it was that bad! Such a shame... it could be a really charming place.

Cons: The stuff they serve here is not edible!

The food was good. That was it. It took over an hour to be seated, after watching many people go in that had come after us. Once we were finally seated the server was very rude. She didn't welcome or smile or even say hello. She did the bare minimum. We had to stop her to get anything that she had forgotten. The people in our group have all worked in the food business and it was the worst we had ever seen. I will not go back and I will never recommend this to anyone.

There are only two good things about this place: the location and the biscuits. The mile-high biscuits were just awesome. And the drive up into the canyon is nice, and you feel as if you're farther away from the city than you are.

I love driving to Ruth's for Sunday morning breakfast (although it is often quite crowded and a fairly lengthy weight, it's worth it). They give you a delicious soft cakey biscuit with raspberry jam for free with your meal. My favorite breakfast item is the Crab Benedict. It's eggs benedict with crab cakes in place of english muffins and sliced tomatoes instead of ham, so delicious!

Ruth's Diner strives for nothing but excellent service & outstanding food. If you or any other customer has had an unpleasant experience, then we would like to start off with a sincere apology and a thank you for bringing it to our attention.

However, we feel that there may be a few factual inaccuracies in your complaint.

First of all, last summer there was no female chef, prep cook or dishwasher employed at Ruth's Diner. Second, there is an employee bathroom located in the back of the kitchen, away from the service floor, and we have a strict policy requiring all employees, both kitchen and service staff, to use said bathroom while on the clock. The bathroom in the actual restaurant is for our customers only. Third, we feel that if this situation had been brought to the attention of an actual manager (of which there is always one on shift, and never have any of them been under the age of 25) then we feel that the problem would have no doubt been rectified, then and there.

Once again, we apologize if you did in fact have a "gross gross gross" experience at Ruth's Diner, and we promise you that we as a staff will do our best to ensure that a situation like the one described could not nor will ever happen again.

My husband lives for breakfast and a friend recommended Ruths Diner. It's a little bit of a drive to get up the canyon but in the end we thought it was worth it. Loved the biscuits and hash. My eggs and sausage were average diner food but my husband is still raving over the cinnamon roll french toast. We will definitely be coming back. We visited early on a weekday.. so seating and service were no problem.

We went here last summer and it was terrible. If I could give it a negative scoreI would. They took forever to take our order and then I couldn't even eat the food. Before our food came to the table I took my 3 year old daughter to the bathroom, well the cook was in there and had the diarreha and didn't look the door so my little girl walked in on her, she then proceded to yell at my child, it wasn't her fault the stupid women didn't lock the door. We waited outside the bathroom for the lady to leave, when she was done I never heard the faucet turn on and the sink was dry when we entered, the smell was terrible and ruined my appetite, but then the thought of her returning to cook my meal without washing her hands made me sick to my stomach. After our food arrived I asked to speak to the manager and a girl no older than 16 came to our table, she had no concern about our order being messed up and wasn't at all worried about the cook not washing her hands. Gross Gross Gross, we will never no back and never recommed them to anyone.

I absolutley love ruth's I started going their for breakfast about 2 years ago and I never leave discouraged.
the atmosphere is wonderful , and that biscuit and jam that you get at the beggining of the meal is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how great the food is, I have absolutley no complaints . It is a tradition that I share with my best friend to go there for breakfast once a month when the weather is warm, and I can't wait to make it out there for dinner sometime!

I will periodically go back to see if the food has gotten and better?.. That is still NO!
The service was Horrible my last visit, for some reason the waiter would not give us the time of day, yes he took our order after about 20 min of sitting and waiting for him, then he would help everyone around us and never checked back with us, I had to go up the bar and get my drink. I left him a $1.00 tip and said once again Poor food and Poor service.
Ruth?s does have a great location, but that is about all they have going for them.

I've never had a good meal at Ruth's; the food is consistently undercooked and unpalatable. The wait for a table is too long, the wait staff are unhelpful and unfriendly, and I've never understood in the twelve years that I've lived here in Salt Lake why it seems to be such a popular spot. Don't bother--there are many more wonderful places to eat than this.

Ruth's is one of my favorite restaurants to go to. I have lived here for 14 years and I have enjoyed every single thing about Ruth's Diner. The food is pure comfort! The biscuits are divine. The atmosphere is awesome. The employees are THE BEST in Utah! Best value for your buck at Ruth's! Such a FUN place, too!

I noticed there aren't any current comments and, due to my breakfast experience at Ruth's today, I thought I could be helpful with an update. Due to an upcoming medical procedure my husband took me to Ruth's, a heretofore favorite or ours, for a "last meal" of a sort. Because I am not only country- but also southern born I was hooked by the menu item Country Smoked Ham Steak (with eggs) and ordered it. After it arrived at the table a casual glimpse made me suspicious of what lay on the plate...it was a ham slice all right, but it sure didn't look like country-smoked. My first taste confirmed my suspicions. The "country smoked ham steak" turned out to be merely a center-cut slice of ham like those you can buy shrink-wrapped in Smith's by the slice. I noted to the waitress (who didn't know but nothing by the way--such innocence) and suggested she tell the manager he or she shouldn't call it country-smoked on the menu. She apparently passed the word along in the kitchen, as seconds later I saw a tall man buzz into the doorway separating the dining area from the kitchen and spent a second or two looking straight at me (my husband and I were the only guests on that side of the room). Since I was obviously not a restaurant-critic type, he didn't bother to even approach our table to inquire about my comment. So I'm sorry to say, the only reason to come to this restaurant nestled romantically in the foothills of the canyon is for the romantic setting or the mile-high biscuits or the ambience or the reputation for weirdness of the long-deceased Ruth. If you want real country-smoked ham, don't go to Ruth's for it if you know the difference.

Pros: setting and parking, even service wasn't bad even though waitress knew nothing

Cons: truth in menu description

Ruth's Diner has a lot of history behind it, but I really don't care. The big attraction is the outdoor patio in the Summer. Sitting inside is, well, like any greasy spoon diner.

The patio is this huge, tree shrouded space just up from a creek. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. Though I'm certain one could go at night, we've only been for brunch. They have a bloody mary bar off to one side and a two piece acoustic guitar band playing on the other (think Indigo Girls).

If the weather isn't at least say, 70-ish, you're going to be cold. Even then, you might need a long sleeved shirt because the patio gets little sun with all the trees overhead.

The food is pretty good. They have these HUGE biscuits, gratis as sort-of an appetizer. The other breakfast entrees are pretty standard, well prepared and reasonably priced. There are a few lighter / granola-esque menu items to placate the health conscious.

I'd recommend showing up before 10:00 am on Sunday to minimize the wait. After 10:00 - 10:30, we've waited for an hour - definitely worth it for the relaxed atmosphere.

The staff has been reasonably friendly, but I think they're a little overwhelmed on those really busy days.

Ruth's is one of those hidden treasures you want to tell people about as long as they don't show up and crowd the place. Overall, thumbs up because it's so relaxing.

Ruth's is somewhat of a Utah institution. I'll leave you to read their website if you don't already know the long and colourful history they proudly highlight. I'm not sure what makes Ruths so hugeful popular with everyone in SLC. Maybe the location (hidden up emigration canyon), maybe the quaint (see tiny) restaurant.

I would be surprised if the queues were for the food. I have never had anything poor at Ruth's, but then I don't recall any great stand out dishes that I just had to try again. The array of sandwhiches, burgers, salads and entrees strecthing Americana to Mexican are all competently executed, but thats all.

If you go on any typically busy restaurant evening (or breakfast/brunch which is popular here) prepare to wait. And then wait a little longer. This is obviously no fault of the restaurant, who doesn't want to be busy! But with queues at Ruths often reaching 45mins+ (im my experience) it may be time to consider a reservation system. It's not rocket science and would help to stop turning customers away dissapointed., which I see every time I have been here in years.

If Ruth's was:
a) a chain restaurant serving the same menu and same quality of food
b) not nestled in the scenic mountains
c) had plenty of tables to cope with the sheer demand

I doubt they would have half the demand they have now. If your a repeat customer at Ruth's you have found something I haven't yet discovered. If you have never been give it a try then by all means certainly give it a try. The food is certainly not bad (and is reasonably priced). Just be prepared for a strange disconnect between the food and the wait time you might endure.

Yeah - sometimes there is an air of pretention in the midst - but one of the best places for good, filling, comforting breakfasts!!!

This place is more or less just good atmosphere. The food is average, in an above average environment. It is fun to drive up the canyon though and sit out on the deck and eat some food. The service the time I went was aweful. Sometimes that is even what makes the food better when you get some good service. I would definitly not waste the time or money here, lots of better options in SLC.

Love the Diner, food and service were excellent on your last two dates there. Go on Thursdays and have the BBQ it is perfect. live music outdoors and great food. And to make it even more perfect she said YES to marrying me, right there on the patio.

Note*This review was a new post on 12-18-2007, we revised our previous review. We have been going to Ruth's Diner for about 7 years and it used to be one of our favorite brunch spots, but no more. When we have been there over the past few months the service has been awful!!! The staff seems more concerned with their personal lives than they are with their customers. As for the food, it may have been good if we got it when it was still hot and palatable rather than 30 minutes later, served by a waitress reeking of cigarette smoke.
I would have loved to complain if I ever saw anyone resembling a manager but I guess they don't use managers anymore. How else could this restaurant have become so disorganized, unruly and dirty? It seems as though the inmates are running the asylum. So much for new owners.

If youve never been to Ruths Diner, youre missing out on a wonderful comfy, cozy experience. Great service, excellent food anytime, morning, day or night I cant say enough good things about this place. The home made biskets and jam just like mom used to make will knock your socks off. My partner and I have been dining there for years, its always consistently good. If youre an out of towner youve got to give this place a try once you do youll be recommending it to everyone. Real human beings run this place and they know how to treat their customers, gay, straight or somewhere in-between doesnt matter were all family at Ruths. Take a short drive up to the mountains and feel right at home.

Eleven of us from work went early to have a lunch celebration. We waited 1 1/2 hours to be seated! We sat waiting, looking at two large tables, completely empty of people but not cleaned. There was no attempt to clean it. The hostess said many times would just be a minute, the manager was no where. A busser came to the dirty table, and SLOWLY cleaned the table. This is the worst run restaturant of any place I have been. We had a very nice waitress, none of us expected it...she was the exception to all the SLOW employees. My son and girlfriend mentioned they had stop there for dinner...and had the same horrible service.!!! Every time I have been there it ha been the same. Worst is the attidude of the management. What a bad, bad experience. Please any of you, dont watse your time or support Ruth's diner!!

My family and I visited Ruth's Diner Saturday June 4th and it was the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in a while. Our server was completely inept and unable to understand simple requests, such as more napkins, refills on drinks, and the concept of hot food was completely lost on him. At one point during our visit, another waiter came to our table to tell us that our food was ready but our waiter had disappeared and no one but him could bring it to us apperantly. The manager was no where to be seen and we suffered through the horrible experience and left hungry, annoyed, and upset about having to pay that much for a poor meal.
If you do visit Ruth's Diner, I would recommend staying on top of the waiter and making sure to advise the management staff of all problems.

I went to Ruths for the first time this summer, and I am glad to say that things have greatly improved. After 2 bad experiences last summer I was hesitent to return, but I was delightfully surprised. We had a very nice waitress who gave us some of the best service we have had anywhere in a long time. The food was great, and it so relaxing to sit outside and listen to music. I am glad to see that things have returned to the way it was at Ruth's.

The first place I ever ate when i moved to Utah... And been going back again and again ever since! For breakfast a spinich omelette has "can't lose" written all over it. Homemade biscuits are memorable as are the bearhead-shaped pancakes for the kiddies. For lunch/dinner there's a killer veggie lasagne and a succulent chicken broiled sandwich that I can never seem to say no too... and one of the top 5 best desserts in the valley, hands down, must go to the Fruit Cobbler with Vanilla ice cream that has Ruth herself slobbering in 'er grave! Decent beer menu and limited wine selection.

PROS: cute trolley, some of the best outdoor seating in Northern Utah
CONS: winter months get crowded much quicker with limited seating

Highly recommended until our food was under cooked and our waiter had an attitude. I had a great first experience, but it wasn't the same during our last visit. The location is wonderful, but the waiter had a major attitude and didn't understant "under cooked" food.

I've eaten at Ruth's at least two dozen times. I vaguely remember the Greek Salad as nothing great and I know I've had some decent breakfasts. I really can't remember what I've eaten there. I've never gone to Ruth's expecting good food or good service; I go to Ruth's to talk. It's a great place to relax and get to know someone. It ain't fine dining, it isn't fast, and leave the kids at home. Your date will love it.

Ruth's is great because it is very versatile. If you go at night, you can sit outside under the stars, and there are candlelit tables for two. You can also go as a group and have a good time.

Ruth's just gets worse everytime I visit. The service is so poor, does management intentionally hire people with no experience and service skills? I went on a Sunday at 3:00 ordered food by 3:30 and it was delivered COLD 45 minutes later, as I was still waiting for water refills and my cup of coffee that was ordered when I was first greeted. I was told by the server that "he was crammed" and when I had to go to the back patio bar for water the server there told me "they just got off the rush". Neither comments are exceptable to a customer nor does the customer need to hear them. I will never go there again. A manager needs to be more present and aware of the floor, I have no idea even if there was one.

For the two times, the service at Ruth's has sucked. We were promplty seated, but it went downhill from there. Our waiter was absent minded and distracted. He was difficult to find and slow to repsond to any requests. Others around us had the same experience. Forgotten items, wrong items, and lack of service all around.

The only saving grace is usually the food, which is most of the time very good. This last time however, the pork chops were over-cooked and unseasoned. Very average and nothing special here. Ruth's has definitely slipped.

My husband and I were so excited to eat breakfast the other day at Ruth's Diner...we always look forward to starting the day with a nice hearty breakfast...and we were thinking of the breakfast potatoes in particular that day. I think Ruth would turn over in her grave if she knew they changed those potatoes!!

My husband and I used to think waiting 40 minutes for a seat in the morning was worth it.

Those breakfast potatoes were the best I have EVER eaten...and now? You decide.

This place in unlike any other in the Salt Lake area. Ruths is perfectly placed in the canyon so as to feel like your eating far from home. I love the size of Ruths. Don't expand! The size is probably the best part about it, and its worth the wait.

I loved the patio and the view, the food was great also! The place was to small and no room for the wait staff to move around easily. The bathroom facilities were really bad for the crowd they had. In thw summer the patio holds a lot of the crowd but in the winter you are really wondering why you put yourself through this. I would like to see the bathrooms and main eating area to grow and hold the crowd that they are proud of.

Ruth's is fabulous. It is away from the city, and has so much character. The food is what Grandma would whip up for dinner. The mile high biscuits are great....I so wish I could get the recipe. The lasagna, spinach omelette, and meatloaf are all great choices. To top it all off the summer patio is the best atmosphere for a great meal. My fiance and I shared our first date at Ruth's 3 years ago. Hopefully my finace and I can have our rehearsal brunch up at Ruth's. We really love this place!

If I was asked to recommend a restaurant to any newcomer to Salt Lake, I would send them to Ruth's Diner. I am always amazed when people who have lived in Salt Lake for any length of time say they have not experienced Ruths. It is the perfect blend of good food, good service, mountain atmosphere and just good casual dining. It is our favorite for summer Sunday brunch--the wonderful canyon atmosphere can't be beat, but be there early (before 10 a.m) if you don't want to wait because this place is popular for a reason. One of the very few restaurants where the noise level is not an imprediment to serious or romantic conversation. Go here to relax and enjoy.
