I live in the East Village and Lunasa is by far my favorite local spot. Scott, the bartender, is the best around. The happy hour is unbelievable, the food is great (try the burger), and the rest of staff make it always worth coming in.

Don't get me wrong....there are many, many great spots in this neighborhood of great spots but when I want to feel welcome and enjoy myself I choose Lunasa. You can also bring a large group of friends as there are many large tables and a garden out back.

Probably should have kept this to myself since I don't want it to be too crowded but this place is definitely worth a visit.

Pros: great staff, great customers, always fun

Cons: the amazing happy hour means it can get crowded

Lunasa became my local bar the day it opened more than 5 years ago and has continued to exceed my expectations everyday since. The staff are my favorite part. The atmosphere is great any night of the week. I can go to the bar for dinner after work, a night out with friends, to watch my favorite team play, and I love stopping by for one more drink before the end of the night!

I bring all of my out of town guests to Lunasa too because they make everyone feel welcome whether you are a regular or in for your first time!

You can't go wrong in a place where everyone knows your name and feels like family!

At first, it looks a bit out of place in the East Village. Three huge TV screens (basketball, when I was there). Some tables full of really loud jocks. High ceilings. Everything new. It seems like it should be on Third Avenue in the 30s. Actually, it's better than that. The staff and other patrons are casually friendly. We even merged tables as the night went on. The food was nothing special, but not bad either. The calamari was especially non-greasy. Our waitress was super nice and accommodating, but obviously overworked. It seemed as if she was the only one taking care of the place. If we wanted more beer, or something to eat, we had to get up, walk around until we found her, ask her to come to our table so we could order. Once there, she was really helpful, and friendly. I hope the place is successful enough for them to hire another server. They need it. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers, join us!

When i was new to New York, I was directed here by a friend of a friend and absouletly loved it. From the friendly staff to the tasty food, its my favourite bar in the East Village, good for games during the day (where the best Irish breakfast is found this side of Mayo) even better at night when the fun really begins. Definitetly worth a visit, from anyone who is a New York lifer to a one time only weekender

I've been coming here since they opened and even though I now live completely across/uptown I still come back regularly. Great food and service always and the best happy hour in the area. It's always my first choice to watch games, meet up with people, etc. Weekend brunch is awesome as well. You cannot go wrong here, I highly reccommend!

Ok, not much of one to do reviews, but I love this place! Seriously one of the best happy hours in the city (believe me, I have tried a lot of them). Being a beer drinker, the fact that draft beers (all 11 of them) are $3 between 4 and 7 pm makes for a great after work bar to meet up with friends (who can partake in the cheap beer, wine or well drinks). As for the food, I eat there regularly and have never had a bad item off the menu. As a matter of fact, I would say that it is some of the best bar food around. The burgers are AMAZING (I say better than the famous burgers at Paul's down the road - an EV institution), the pannini's are gourmet in style and taste and the apps! 1/2 price apps for happy hour! The calamari and chicken quesadilla are my favorites. Portions are very generous (almost a meal in themselves) and the quality is great. At $9 normally, I still consider them good value (the number of times at other places I have paid more than this for a small bowl of what seems like 15 pieces of chewy calamari...), but at $4.50, they are a steal!!! The pita & chips, spring rolls and buffalo wings also rate well and are cheaper.
The crowd is also good: chilled, but lots of fun. Lunasa gets a fair number of people, but I rarely find it getting stupidly busy. They play a wide selection of music, at a good level (nice to be able to talk!) and usually have any sports games on and are very accommodating with patrons requests. If you are so inclined, they also have a number of board games (connect-4, scrabble, jenga, etc.) to keep you amused.
As for the bartenders - Scott is the man! The other bartenders are great too, but Scott is there most afternoons. Go there a couple of times and he will remember your name and drink. Even on your first time you will be able to have a great chat with him. The girls serving also deserve a honorable mention: friendly, efficient and pretty easy on the eyes. Can't ask for much more.
Go Lunasa!!!

Lunasa is a rare gem in NYC. I've been a regular customer for some years now and have yet to find a bar where I would rather have a quality night with friends. The quality of food is unbeatable: expect traditional pub favorites with a chic twist at great prices. When in need of a good burger, look no further than Lunasa: one of the best cheeseburgers in NYC (a true opinion amongst my friends and I). Lunasa is especially good for their happy hour: half price drinks and appetizers. The music is always fun, lots of classics and european bands that have yet to come to the US. The ambiance is relaxed, and you can see a lot of pride is taken into the upkeep of the bar. Most of all the staff and service are always friendly and welcoming. Spend a night at Lunasa and you're sure to come back.

I usually end up in Lunasa when I'm in the East Village, whether for a morning / afternoon soccer game with a few ciders and an Irish breakfast, or at night when the ciders are left aside and the hard liquor is whats required! Whatever the time of the day, this place is a good bet. For the soccer games (or indeed any sport you care to watch) the menu is varied and the staff are always friendly and attentive. I generally lean towards the Irish breakfast, however. Even in NYC where there are a load of places to get a good Irish breakfast, this place stands out - top notch! And at night the tunes are really good and the crowd are always up for a laugh. If ever you find yourself down the East Village, I highly recommend Lunasa whether for food, drinks, or preferably both!

Ok.. hands down .. best happy hour in New York City. In my eternal search for the perfect happy hour, I always include a myriad of variables which need to be met to meet my level of expectation.

First:
You need a place that has a good vibe, a quaint feel, not too highbrow, but not where you are walking in puddles of beer.

Second:
Outside Patio. It's a must.

Third: (really first priority)
Inexpensive Drinks. Not looking to pay $8 bucks for a Bud bottle. (AND NOT ONLY AT THE BAR ? very annoying and just dumb when bars do that)

Fourth:
Good bartender who looks out for you and takes care of you.

&

Fifth:
Cheap but quality pub food to help soak up that alcohol as it careens through your system

And the clear winner that incorporates all these factors ? I have to admit ? is LUNASA! I have searched high and lo and can't stop raving about this place. Here are my reasons:

HAPPY HOUR INCLUDES:

$3 mixed drinks
3$ beers (good quality beer approx. 3$)
? appetizers ? which equates to about $3.50 for amazing quesadillas, calamari, hummus/pita, buffalo wings, spring rolls, etc. AND THEY ALL ARE AMAZING .. although the quesadillas & calamari are my favorites.

The bartender, Scott, is honestly the best bartender I have met .. friendly, funny, easy going, and, although not easy on the eyes ? will remember your drink and name after meeting him just one time.

The waitresses are quite easy on the eyes ? are always smiling, friendly, very attractive, and never bitchy.

The atmosphere (which doesn?t always matter to me) is actually nice .. with exposed brick, candles on the nice long wood bar, tables in the front and back, and a nice patio out back. (even has board games too).

So .. hands down .. the perfect bar for happy hour. M- F 4-7 pm.

I'm generally pretty chill when it comes to restaurants, service, and food. But this St. Patrick's Day "brunch" really tested my patience. It was the worst experience I've had in the six years in NYC. We walked in to Lunasa at 1:50p to get their "Irish breakfast". There was one table already eating and the rest of the restaurant was empty. So all in all the place was pretty dead.

We waited 15 minutes to get menus and water and after we ordered, waited another 45 mintues to get our food. Well, they called it "food" but it was inedible.

My friend's eggs were cold and tasted like they had been reheated in the microwave, the "hash brown" potatos were frozen on the inside. The "rashers" were 50% burnt, 50% raw, and 100% cold. The dishes had clearly been left out as the server didn't go to the kitchen for a full half hour.

My omelet was a yellowish shade of grey...Against my better judgement and letting my hunger defeat me ... I took a bite....and then did something I've never EVER done before, I had to put the chunk of "food" out of my mouth and onto my napkin. To give some background, I've tested my palate with some adventurous eating... I've tried some really weird food - beetles, larva, intestine, bees, chicken feet, scorpian - there is nothing I won't eat. But these eggs were my white whale...they completely defeated me! They tasted like sawdust mixed with sand and I just couldn't take it. ...it was a miserable experience to what should have been a happy St. Patrick's Day Brunch.

A warning to everyone who has taste buds, do yourself a favor and do not eat here. In fact, warn others about this place too. It was the most disgusting meal I've ever experienced.

Perfect place to go for a quick pint - or waste away an afternoon. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is great. Go for a happy hour during the week to catch some specials or check out their weekend brunches. Everything from a traditional Irish breakfast to the best cheeseburger in the city (it's incredible). Spent last St. Patty's Day there and wound up planning a trip to Ireland. Great music and cool staff. A must in the east village to check out.

I had my bday party here, with a group of about 20. From the first time I contacted Lunasa to inquire about this, they were so nice and willing to accomidate. THey reserved the back seating area for my party, no charge, no bar tab minimum, no deposit. Our waitress, Michelle, was fabulous!! Thanks Michelle! She was right on point with each and every person and drink order. The bar tender was great, made us some delicious shots. I've also had food here in the past, and it's always been really good. The place is very nice but no attitude, and the games (jenga, connect four, etc) are a nice touch. Thanks for making my party great!!

This place has great atmosphere, & the staff are very friendly, but I was really disappointed in the quality of the service. We had a birthday party here, and we repeatedly had to go and track down the waitress to take drink orders everyone time someone new arrived, then the drinks took forever to get there. I thought they were just really busy until I spotted our waitress hanging out with some of the other staff at the back. I'd also been told when making the reservations that we could make music requests of the bartender, but when we tried to do that we were told that they couldn't because they were busy & short-staffed (which I totally understand, but was a bit disappointed after being told ahead of time that we could). Having said that, I think everyone had a good time & the staff were very friendly - just seemed a bit disorganized with slow & not-very-attentive service. Wouldn't recommend it for a large group or one where people are arriving at different times.

I was here on Thursday night for about an hour and a half... arrived around midnight and the bar was basically empty. Some would be upset about this but my friends and I were just looking for a place where we could hang out and have a beer. It ended up being a very relaxing experience. The bartender was attentive and knew how to pour a beer. The board games there are a great addition and provided us some entertainment on a slow night. We met some girls outside and promptly asked them to join us... Jenga proved to be a great ice breaker. I would go back to Lunasa but I'd want to try it on a night when there are a few more people there. Then again, for a relaxing evening, Lunasa proved itself worthy of my business.

I've been going to Lunasa for a couple of years now and figured its high time I wrote a review! The fact that I'm still going there says it all. I LOVE this bar! It has that neighbourhood feel, very friendly staff and excellent bar cuisine! Last summer I had a farewell party for my sister and it was a huge success! We reserved the backyard which has picnic style tables and heaters when it cools down! The staff set up a table with a white tablecloth and real plates and cutlery (no paper or plastic here) and put on a hot and cold buffet. The guests raved about the food and the location. It was a perfect, private setting. We had non-stop table service and they kept the food coming until we had our fill! I've been here for other parties, and they too have been a great~! LUNASA, U BETTER NOT GO ANYWHERE, WE LOVE YOU!! And the music is AWESOME and of course Paddys Day Rocks here!!

I spent last Saturday night at this pub celebrating my birthday. From the minute I called (which was only a few days before) Scott (a bartender) was so helpful and friendly. It was kind of last minute and I had a small group coming, but he ensured me that we would have a place to sit and relax. They have some games at the bar (Get more black Connect Four pieces!) that we played for a bit while enjoying our drinks. The music was decent, atmosphere great, and the service was fantastic. Natalie was so attentive- she made sure everyone in our group was never without a drink. Scott chatted with us before we left- he wanted to make sure we had a great time. I'm so glad I decided to check out this place. It was a fun place hang with friends and I didn't have to put too much planning into my birthday gathering. I will definitely be back to Lunasa. I can't wait till the weather warms up to check out the beer garden.

In short, for all you connoisseurs of the black stuff, no where else in Manhattan has got it quite as good as Lunasa has. And, believe me I am the fussy guinness drinker as the excellently funny bartender in Lunasa knows!! This bar is undoubtedly a gem in a city of Irish pubs. It's got that magical quality otherwise known in the emerald isle as "the craic" and as such the atmosphere at any time of the day or night is second to none.

It's got that magical quality otherwise known in the emerald isle as "the craic" and as such the atmosphere at any time of the day or night is second to none.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Nothing

Went to this place on a crowded hot friday night amazing atmospher and the hottest bartender i have ever seen in my life (james).
But beside the fact that james was really cute and friendly it really is a mecca for irish bars in new york the decor the food the drink and most of all the modest staff make this the real east village haunt for everyone who can stand a great time.
As james said this is a place where young meets old hot meets cold and where the staff are having as much fun as the customers.
If you havent been then your missing out.

I'm not going to say this was the all time best bar I've ever been to in my life, but I had a really fantastic time there for my birthday. The outdoor garden was very relaxing and the food was very good. The service, however, was the best part of all. I had a large group, with people coming and going, and constantly adding new things to our tab - some people paid with credit card, others with cash, and the waitress managed it all beautifully. And she was the only person serving in the garden, which was pretty packed. She did forget one thing we ordered, but the place was so crowded we honestly thought it was pretty understandable, and when we reminded her she brought it out very soon afterward. I will definitely be back.

I've been coming here for two years, and this place never lets me down. Great bar, good people, friendly staff, excellent atmosphere, good music--just what you're looking for in the East Village to relax and have a good time. It can get pretty packed on weekends, but the crowd is always friendly and relaxed. The brunch on weekends is phenomenal, and definitely worth the visit. I've never had a bad time here, and would recommend this place hands down!

I went to Lunasa this past Friday to take advantage of their happy hour specials. What a great place! The bartender (who later in the evening took post as the bouncer) was an absolute sweetheart. I indulged in a hamburger that was so enormous and delicious, I am still full. The choices of drinks were endless, with a wide variety of mixed cocktails, wines, as well as beer on tap and bottles. The atmosphere was very laid back, but the facility itself was extremely clean and polished. (I especially like the exposed brick wall behind the bar). Would highly reccomend Lunasa to anyone interested in a few drinks for a night on the town in NYC.

about a week ago some buddies of mine and i decided to get together for drinks after work on a friday, and i remembered that a couple of friends had recommended this place so we checked it out. i must say that our expectations were highly exceeded here (we ended up staying the whole night!). it was a great bar with what must be the friendliest staff i've ever encountered in the city, and no doubt the best guinness i've ever had in the states (not to mention most of the places i visited when i was in ireland). aside from that the atmosphere is minimalist, yet warm and inviting at the same time with no air of pretention about the place. the tunes were great, the drinks were great, and to top it all off it wasn't too stressful on my wallet. this place is a must-visit. 4 stars.

Lunasa is a chilled Irish bar with zero frills. Laid back atmosphere with the frendliest staff in the city. It's interior is sleek and modern with an intimate garden out back. I threw a surprise party for a friend here, the music was great and the service was amazing. The food is delicious and far beyond your typical bar fare. A friend highly recommended Lunasa, but even then it exceeded my expectations. The waitresses were so helpful and accommodating. This place rocks!!

Just enjoyed one of the best birthdays I've ever had at this bar. Felt compelled to write a review. I'd heard a lot about Lunasa before I actually visited it and it didn't disappoint. Lunasa's cool, unaffected atmosphere is possibly a direct result of its great bar staff. But this isn't the only gem in it's crown, its beer garden is magical! Perfect for enjoying a pint of Guinness in the sunshine with a group of friends. The food is delicious, consistent and a steal. The generous happy hour midweek attracts a crowd and makes it perfect for after work drinks. If you're not a regular at this place yet you soon will be!!

I held a party here a few months back and the service I and my party of 80 people received was STUPENDOUS. The 2for1 HH special is awesome, especially when they randomly turn into 3for1's. The owners and staff are just great, the food is good, and TV's always have something good on. Beer Garden in the back for the nice weather. I arrived at 1PM and didn't leave till 3:30am. Now, that's a good bar!!!

My friends and I ventured to Lunasa for birthday drinks and had the best time ever. The space is beautiful, the bartender, Pat, is a saint and the bouncer was tough but as sweet as cotton candy. We bopped and boogied with the DJ that plays there on Saturday nights (he plays everything from The Cure to old school hip hop). The drinks are very reasonable and the food is delish. Every one of my friends loved this place and we plan on making it one of our regular spots.

a friend and i stopped in wed nite for a drink before heading home at about 8.30 . . . 3 hrs later, we were still sitting there, enjoying perfect pints of guinness, martinis and good conversation w/a most courteous, pleasant bartender named gavin. i was going to say he was one of the nicest bartenders that i've encountered in the city, but that would be a disservice to him -- he is actually just a truly nice person who provided great service. short of a very loud, very excited, overly intoxicated patron (which gavin handled w/the greatest of patiecne), our time there was most enjoyable -- we'll be back for sure.

In Short
It's a pub of a different color: That is, muted Pottery Barn hues inform the decor, evading the typical dark mahogany and shamrock green. Large street-side windows shed light on cozy tables as laid-back patrons snack on…
