The entertainment of the ""chefs"" as they prepare your food is good (not excellent). The service / attention to any protocol of service is lousy. If the food was served to you without the fanfare of the preparation, most of us would rate it as something none of us would care to eat again. The 3 star rating is only because of the effort of the chef to entertain, not because of the quality of the food.Food alone would get a 2 star rating.

We just went there tonight for my daughters 11th birthday. Our waiter Zach couldn't have been lazier if he tried! Another party also was seated at our grill table, and it was their daughters 16th birthday. It took FOREVER to get a drink order started, forever to actually fill it, and then yet again for a dinner order. 45 min before a chef even started cooking. Then the chef did a cutesy thing with rice and a candle for the 16 yr old bday and NOTHING for my daughter who was seated at the SAME table! We told the waiter 3 times. Still not one acknowledgment. We had to chase the guy into the kitchen just to get our check! PATHETIC! I will never go back! 2 1/2 hours on a weeknight for dinner! Oh not to mention - he served the 18 year old sister alcohol without ID! She said she didn't have it with her. Her mother TOLD me she was 18! Maybe if Zach quit ogling over her breasts, there might have been some fraction of service. Never again.

The service was poor. During our lunch our table had 4 different servers. Without being given menus we were asked if we were ready to order. We ordered sushi which was good, though the order came out incorrect. (we received an extra piece that we did not get charged for)
We each ordered a plate. His plate of filet mignon and vegetables was room temperature at best. No where near hot. I ordered shrimp and chicken. I had 4 small, over cooked shrimp and 8 pieces of ridiculously over cooked chicken and a good portion of vegetables. This is what you get for $22.95? Seriously?? I ate 1 piece of the chicken and had to wash it down with a drink of tea due to the extreme dryness. At least my vegetables were hot though they had an odd almost bitter flavor to them. I assumed the soy sauce used had gotten slightly burned.
The manager (owner?) did take the cost of my meal off of the ticket since I took only 1 bite of the chicken, didn't touch the shrimp and a few bites of the vegetables, but only took $2 off the cost of the cold meal. Then as we are checking out we get informed that an 18% gratuity was automatically added to our ticket. It was like adding insult to injury.

When I first began eating here the food was stellar. If there ever was a problem which there rarely was the manager Keith would fall all over himself to make it right. Today I went and we ate at the tables as opposed to the grills. The food was cold when it hit our tables, the meat was overcooked and the rice was just eh.......I told the waiter and he told Keith. The response from Keith bordered on unconcerned. I hope that this was a bad day and I could truly overlook that but the dismissal was not.

The food here is always great, little pricey if you go for dinner but they have killer lunch specials and a great happy hour. They have the best sushi I've had in Austin, and the fried rice is the bomb. If your looking for a fun meal I recommend sitting at the hibachi table at evening for the full show. If you order an entree plan on walking out with a to go box because they'll fill you up.

We try to make it to Kobe about once a week. Keith is a manager there and welcomes us with a handshake and a smile. We have done the Dinner there and enjoyed the show. But what brings us back is the lunch specials. We always sit at the Hibachi Grills. My wife gets the Terriaki Chicken with a salad every time. They have some items they rotate through the lunch specials. So you need to check the items when your seated. They also have sushi lunch specials. So often times I double up and get the sushi special and one of the other lunch specials. This makes for ALOT of food. Always leave feeling stuffed.

I have to admit I have not tried the show where everyone sits around a grill watching the chef twirl spatulas while cooking up fried rice. My wife and I...our thing is SUSHI.
Their Sushi is fresh, tasty, and served rather quickly even though we custom order our servings.

But here's why we love it. From 4pm-7pm they have Happy Hour on their Sushi. They have a generous selection of Sushi on sale for HALF PRICE. We ordered: Miso soup, pork dumpling appetizer, 2 Tuna nigiri, 2 Yellow tail nigiri, California roll, Texas Roll, Crunch Roll, and one other Roll my wife likes and all of that came to $15.78. That's 32 pieces of sushi rolls, 4 pieces of nigiri Sushi, soup and appetizer. With a couple of beers we get out of there stuffed for less than $25. We go EVERY Friday and highly recommend you try their Happy Hour.

We enjoy our lunch for the most part, we have been a few time, food is great, today our cook put to much salt on our food and when we try to talk to him he just looked at us, I am guessing he does not speek english very well.. This has become one of our favorite places to go for lunch, When my son came home from being in Iraq for 15 months the staff gave a nice welcome, he said it was the best dinner he had in 15 months..

Wanted to try ""Kobe"" raised beef for the first time. The description on the menu just says Filet Mignon $60.
So I expected a small slab of meat, medium rare. What I got was meat cut into small stew meat sized chunks, soaked in some kind of brown broth seasoning. It was soft but couldn't taste the meat at all. My friend had the same, rare, but was exactly the same as mine, and not a drop of red or pink. For $60 I expect to taste more than broth.
If this is how japanese always serve steak, let me know, and maybe I'll take this review down. But the description should say, ""Filet mignon, soaked in a brown broth"" $60. I don't usually go to chains anyways, this may be my last.

I just went to Kobe Steakhouse today for lunch with my coworker and the crunch roll was fantastic. This is my first time eating in this restaurant and I was totally amazed! I liked the sushi, the place and the service. My friend is a regular customer to this restaurant and she said it was really good and even better during the happy hour 3-6pm with half price rolls & sushis. Although I live in south austin, I will definitely go back more often and i'll bring more friends to this restaurant. I wish they'll open a restaurant in the south location. :)

Kevin the chef/manager tends to burn the food...he is so
full of himself that makes no changes or attempts to be nice...once you are in watch you wallet.

Forget Kobe and jump to Benihana~

First off, Kobe is not that bad of a place, I have always gotten good sushi. Second, the prices might be a little high, but where are they not?? I do enjoy the atmosphere, and the wait staff seems mostly friendly. Would be nice if the chef spoke English though. I have many great experiences at this resteraunt and do plan on returning, but I am turned off by what seems to be a bogus review posted on the same date as the Resteraunts Reply to the bad review : ( If you have never been to Kobe Steakhouse, I say go and see for yourself.

We went to Kobe for their Kobe beef. I wanted to try the kobe Ribeye but was steered towards the Kobe filet by my waiter. It was a great decisio. I enjoyed it's rich, buttery flavor immensely. The manager came by to check on my experience and was pleasantly greeted. Fine young man. He gave me a complimentary appetizer card for my next visit :) I also had the calamari tempura which was amazingly tender. Service was good but not fantastic but the free appetizer card made up for it. I waited for 30 minutes to be sat, but it was extremely busy that night. You can tell everyone was having a good time. I am an older man so the number of kids I sat with was irritating so I will sit in the bar area next time for more privacy. Good job Kobe!

Kobe is one of the most expensive hibachi restaurants in Austin, but you definitely do not get what you pay for. The cooking is mediocre, the food quality fair, and the show lacking in excitement. Service was very slow bringing food out, but tried more than once to take plates from people in the party who were not finished with their food yet. We ordered a large sushi platter as well & we were all very disappointed with it's quality - the fish did not seem very fresh. I was most upset by how over salt&peppered the rice & meat were, so much so that I was almost unable to eat it.

I recently went to Kobe with my husband and his family as a birthday treat for him. Let me say, I was not thrilled to go, as everytime I go to a Japanese steakhouse, I become violently ill. Buuuut, for my husband, I sucked it up. We got there, and the hostess was a bit ditzy, but everything else was decent. It took a while to get things started, but it wasn't a big deal. I ordered chicken, and my husband had steak, chicken for his mom and shrimp for his dad. We also ordered some veggie sushi. So, they brought out our sushi, and, let me say, I'm a VERY picky sushi eater. I RARELY order it because it so frequently all tastes fishy. So, I made my husband taste it, and he told me I'd like it. Well, it was slightly fishy, but just the right amount...and DELICIOUS! Turns out they brought us the wrong roll, though, so they took it away. ::sad face:: Then, they brought us out the right roll, and it, too, was phenomenal. No complaints here!

KOBE kicks Bennihana's butt!! Seating was prompt..we sat at a Tepanyaki table. The chef was a riot. They have a plethora of fruity cocktails to choose from.. I suggest the melon martinis...yummy! Creative sushi selection and GREAT presentation. The best part.. we went for Girl's night and there were 5 of us. Well my friend LOVES Tempura so she wanted to get a little sampling.. so she thought (an appetizer.) So she orders.....15 minutes later this Tempura monstrosity emerges from the kitchen. It was sooo huge we couldn't see the waiter's head behind it. Seriously have you ever seen the movie The Thing?? I kid you not.. it looked like the alien...It was crazy and highly amusing for the rest of us at the table. Definitely worth recommending to large groups!!! Not so much a date night kind of place

What a joke. I do not understand how this restaurant could have been so highly rated in other reviews. After arriving at the restaurant, we waited in the bar at a table to be seated. The bartenders could not seem to fathom how to serve us, and urged us to wait for a server at a bar table. The server came 15 minutes later, only to disappear (the bar was 6 feet away from us) for another 15 minutes with our drink orders. Upon finally getting to our table, it continued to go downhill. The waitstaff did not take our orders for beverages, yet continued to fill our water glasses. I eventually got up and walked to the bar at the front of the restaurant to buy drinks (including soft drinks) for our party. When the ""chef"" came, he lightly burned my food as well as my wife's food. When he was ""finished"" cooking and had cleaned the grill, he had forgotten to cook the steak for someone else in our party. He tried to blame the waitstaff, but he specifically had reviewed everyone's order at the table. The waitstaff and chef had no clue what they were doing, the bartenders were disorganized, and the entire restaurant was hot and stuffy. There are several Japanese steakhouses up North, so people have several options of where to dine. I am surprised that with this sort of experience that Kobe is still in business.

We went to Kobe for the first time for Mike's birthday yesterday. The staff was wonderful, food perfect and our chef was entertaining! Sunshine, the chef, delighted us with egg acrobatics, onion volcanoes and flashing knives. We also enjoyed the company at our table which led to lively discussions about what we love about Austin. At the end of the meal, unprompted other than mentioning it was Mike's b'day, they brought out a piece of chocolate cake and a set of nice chop sticks as a gift. Awesome Touch! Mike had the Kobe beef and said it was the best steak he had ever eaten. I had the shrimp and scallops. Both were huge and succulent~ just the way shrimp and scallops are suppose to be. We also enjoy a Rockin' Roll: sushi with salmon and eel with two sauces and it was flawless. Highly recommend this dining experience!

I recently went to Kobe with my girlfriend for a no-special-reason dinner. We had been to another restaurant similar to this one, and had a great time. The atmosphere, furnishings, and food were great, but the chef was very boring. While waiting for our chef, we watched another chef at a different table and his customers seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. Our chef arrived and hardly said a word while preparing our meal. His nly attempt at showmanship was to offer my girlfriend the knives and give her a chance to cook...feeble at best. The food was incredible, and when my girlfriend wrote an e-mail to address her concerns, we were sent a $25 gift certificate. We will go back.

This place reminds me of the Benihana restaurants because they have the same type of chefs where they cook in front of you. It's really fun and the food tastes good. The price is comparable to other Japanese restaurants, if not better. The location is great because it's right off the highway, and there's always plenty of parking available. Customer service has always been excellent. A great place for a date or for the whole family!

I've been to other restaurants like this. The others don't compare. Very professional staff and great food. The appetizers looked awesome. I loved their martinis. I went very skeptical because of experience at other restaurants like this, but I was very pleasantly surprised. One of the best restaurants in town, period.

I usually go to kobe for lunch at least 2 times a week and take a couple people from my office. The food is always awsome and the prices are very reasonable. I have always been deterred from going at night because the dinner menu is a little pricey. After work on my birthday my friends took me out and asked where I wanted to go, since they were paying I said why not Kobe. I found out that the portions were bigger, much bigger than lunch. The chefs do an incredible show with the fire and the flipping of food and spatulas, and when I thought I couldn't eat any more they brought me out a birthday cake and gave a pair for very elegant chop sticks. I no longer wonder why the dinner is more expensive, it is well worth it, especially the Kobe Ribeye.

I have been to several different Teppan Yaki places and Kobe is the best so far. It's way better than Benihana which I think is totally over rated.
The portion of the food was good and the service was excellent. I had tried the rib eye steak and it was cooked and prepared perfect.

Whom ever gave this restaurant a 10 rating is out of their minds. THis is one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. The bartender(s) do not know how to serve drinks, the hostess were rude and the food is terrible. I ordered the Kobe special that consists of steak, chicken and shrimp, all tasted the same. I tasted my wife's lobster, also the same. What a ripoff. In addition, when we left the restaurant, my glasses and shirt were full of grease that splatered off the cooking surface.

My wife and two children decided to try the Kobe steakhouse after seeing the advertisement on TV. We have been to other Japanese steakhouses in the past and have always enjoyed the experience. We worried that the portion/price would be too much for the kids and decided that they could share my wifes meal. My wife ordered the steak/chicken and shrimp dinner with fried rice. I ordered steak and shrimp. I had two beers and my wife had two mixed drinks. The children had soft drinks. Service was attentive and prompt. Fried rice was blan. Dipping sauce for vegetables was non distinct. Food preparation was entertaining. Meal overall was good but not the best I have had. The $120 tab was far to expensive for what amounted to two meals and 4 drinks.

Ok, so it's not the cheapest lunch, but i'm very critical of my meals and this one met with my approval.

I had the fried rice (a definate must) and the steak entree. While the soup tasted fairly bland and the salad was non-impressive, the rest of the meal more than compensated.

The wait staff was friendly and attentive, and the hostess even took a moment to give us a tour of the saki collection.

Would I recommend this restaurant? Definately - give it a try for a good meal, and unusual dining experience.

Well, for those of you who might be deterred by Drew401's comments (like I was before I actually went and tried it myself) - They CANNOT accept reservations of less than 8 people, because 8 people sit at a table together and have the food prepared by a chef in front of them. You get seated when there's enough people for the cook to cook for.

I have been to many teppan restaurants and KOBE Japanese Steakhouse is definitely my favorite. The food, service, ambience, and show was great. I went on a Friday night during prime dinner time so there was a little wait (15 minutes), but I did not feel that this was very long given that it was Friday and prime dinner time. They use angus beef, but also serve KOBE Beef for the beef connoisseur. The price was very reasonable given the quality and quantity of food given.

Called from the car and was told didn't need reservations because there was no wait. When we got there, 5 minutes later, there was a 20 minute wait. While waiting, we heard hostess telling people on the phone there was no wait. Had to complain to the manager to get seated 45 minutes later. The waiter was good but took 15 minutes to get drink from the bar. The cook had no personality. No show at all. No fire. No onion volcano. Not even a slap of the grill with the spatula. To be fair, we did see the shows the other cooks were putting on at other tables. The food was very good. While we were there, we observed a large number of people waiting to eat who were very upset with the hostesses. One guy even yelled ""THIS PLACE SUCKS"" as they left having waited a long time.

The new Kobe Japanese Steakhouse is, yes, better than Benihana and is the best in Austin. If you've ever been to Bellagio in Las Vegas, (5 diamond), they have a Japanese restaurant called Shintaro. Kobe is on this level.
