classy hotel on the river
by Elizabeth A.
My daughter and I found this hotel when we were looking at Lewis & Clark and we fell in love with it. SO NICE to overlook the river, and to be right on the bike/walk path, and the restaurant is really nice and very authentic Italian. Staff simply could not be nicer or more helpful. Rooms elegant and bathrooms especially large and fancy -- we loved it!

This is a beautiful hotel near the SW waterfront area- nowhere near downtown. It is a better spot for parking, though, and there's a beautiful view of the river. The rooms are elegant, and you can take the streetcar downtown easily.

This hotel is not downtown... My wife and I like to stay downtown so we dont stay here very often but the one time we did stay our experience was great. The staff is very courteous and the view of the river is amazing. Also if you do want to go downtown they do have a towncar service to take you.

Avalon is not located anywhere near downtown Portland, which is part of the appeal for us when we stay there. After a busy day, Avalon is very nice to come "home" to, overlooking the river and close to the bike path and running trails. The staff are friendly and the room service is tasty and quick. There is also a restaurant near the river that has nice seating overlooking the river, but it is overpriced and not that great.

awesome spa, ok hotel
by charlie 21
The spa was amazing. They were offering awesome deals and were able to get us appoinments first thing the next morning. Everyone in the spa was so helpful! I got a facial and massage, both great.
The hotel was ok. Very nicely decorated, but rooms were not as nice. TV was 10+ years old and the remote hardly worked. When we called to get the TV fixed after the screen kept going blank, we were told it was not an option because it was a ComCast issue, when we asked to be moved rooms we were told there were no rooms avaliable for our room type. We asked for an upgrade and were denied. TV was eventually fixed though.
Parking was expensive at 19/night for over night parking. Valet staff were very friendly.
Would probably not return to hotel next time I was in Portland, but would definitely return to the SPA...
Pros: spa
Cons: rooms

Best Spa in Portland
by PDXRunner2
New to portland and found this hidden jem. The gal who gave me my facial said she had been there for 3 years, wish I remembered her name, but she was an absolute doll. Her facial massage practically put me to sleep. I will definitely be back.
Pros: Spa has valet parking from the hotel
Cons: None

Ooh La Spa! And they have Guerlain.....
by lovinthelife
Loved the Spa, down to the last detail! The ladies there made me feel like I was a queen, doing everything in their power to fulfill my every wish. EVERYTHING was included in the price of my treatments. I was surprised they have Guerlain skincare, which is so luxurious, it is hard to find anywhere. I have loved the Super Aqua Serum for the body and was able to have some shipped to my home for no additional charge! I started out in the gym, went to the spa and relaxed in the jacuzzi, steam-room, and sauna. I had a body polish, (AMAZING) it was on a wet table with multiple shower heads running over me the whole time... aaah and then the massage and facial. Dana Ray and Natalie gave me the best treatments, I would have to say, I've ever had. Both were so knowledgeable and sweet. The facial came with facial waxing and brow and lash tinting (I'd never had tinting before but now I am addicted: I no longer have to wear mascara)....... I could go on and on, but I just have to say the chop chop thing on my feet was soooooo incredible! Thanks ladies, I feel incredible! Portland is definitely in my top 5!
Ciao!
Pros: All inclusive spa
Cons: I don't live there :(

Awful customer service and no self-parking
by duckgrl
My husband and I frequently stay in the Portland area but this was our first time at this hotel. The first thing that I found very strange and inconvenient is that we were required to use the valet service in order to park our car. There was a very large parking lot just steps from the hotel front door, but they were requiring that I pay them $18 to have someone park my car for me. Ridiculous! The valet person told me that they do not own the lot across the street and that they had limited valet spots. He even divulged that they didn't have enough for the entire hotel! I soon realized it must be quite hectic there if the restaurant is full and there is an event at the hotel or people at the spa. It was very unorganized and a ridiculous way to nickel and dime us. Also, our room wasn't ready when we arrived. We had to be at an event in a hour and the woman at the front desk told us to come back so she could call housekeeping. I asked if she could call while we waited and she finally did after much hesitation. Finally, I had to ASK whether or not they had other accommodations where we could shower and get ready before she offered us a shower at the spa. The last straw came when I ran into a person from housekeeping in the hallway the next morning. I said good morning and her response was a scowl and an inaudible mumbling. I guess the staff is as happy about the place as I am! I will never give this hotel my business ever again.
Pros: room was clean and neat
Cons: horrible service and no parking!

Everything you've every wanted...
by Jimmyjo7
I came into the spa with a girlfriend of mine and was blown away by the fact that I didn't even know this place was here. I recieved the best facial I have ever had from Aracili who really took the time to give my older skin what it needed and well as give me easy recomendations of what I could do at home. My massage was more relaxing than I could imagine and even when my services were done, they let me relax in the ladies lounge area for as long as I wanted. Amazing experience and everyone made me feel like I owned the place. I will definitely be back.
Pros: The whole place. The tip is even included in the prices.
Cons: Parking was confusing.

Wonderful 1st Anniversary!
by nwhurleygirl
My husband took me to the Avalon for a relaxing "close-to-home" getaway on our 1st anniversary. We had such a great stay. Upon checking in, we received a complimentary upgrade from a regular room to a junior suite for our special occasion. The room was gorgeous and we had a balcony with a partial view of the river. When we entered the room, there was a chilled bottle of champagne awaiting us and in the morning, a complimentary continental breakfast was available with fresh apples and fruit, pastry, cereal, tea and coffee. During our stay, we enjoyed the jacuzzi and fitness room - both of which were clean and in good repair. I will definitely stay at the Avalon again and recommend it to friends and family.

Avalon Hotel and Spa. Very poor in every way
by frequentflyer09
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!!
I recently stayed at this hotel, and the best I can describe it as is a Motel 6. Upon check-in I was told that the room that I had guaranteed with my credit card was not available, and I would have to be down graded to another room. They offered to comp my room for the night, but this was of little comfort since I had a suite reserved and they put me in a basic room, which they told me had a view of a hill, but in reality it was a view of an office building!!!.
To make matters worse I was there for a getaway with my wife, and when I called to order 24 hour room service which they had advertised on their website, I was told that it was too late to order any drinks containing alcohol. I have stayed in hotels all over the world and have never run into this problem before, what type of hotel claims to be luxury and cannot bring wine to your room after 11 P.M.?
To make matters worse the people in the room next to me were having a party and no one ever calmed the party down. They said that they had gone up to talk to the people, but they girl that I spoke to said that was all she could do. I came down to the lobby to ask for my money back on the room and I was told no, I asked for the manager to call me and have not heard anything as of yet. (This was more than a week ago!!!)
I beg all of you whom are considering staying at this hotel to not do it, their are many nice hotels in this city, whom are glad for your business, and not just to take your money.
Oh and as for the river view, I walked around the building and saw that most of the rooms were blocked with trees, so I do not see how these people could see the river anyway.
Pros: I did not catch any diseases
Cons: Too many to list

Watch out for extra charges on your bill.
by lanwanman
I stayed here and everything seemed OK during the stay, nothing special but not bad either. Trouble came later when I recieved an unknown charge on my credit card for an extra $200.00. When I called to ask about the charge I was told that it was a cleaning charge for smoking in the room. The problem is I do not smoke and didn't smoke in the room. It didn't smell like smoke to me when I was in it and unfortunately the hotel refused to even discuss the issue or issue a credit. Watch out, they may have maids that smoke in the rooms and then you get dinged on your credit card for it. I am reporting this unethical behavior to Better Business as well in hopes that other consumers do not get ripped off by this company.
Pros: location
Cons: unknown charges and unethical staff members

Horrible Customer Service
by mddurritto
I scheduled a spa day for a wedding party MONTHS in advance. We all had massages and facials planned for the day after a bachelorette party. The DAY before, they called me to tell me that not only were our services not available, but they would not honor the prices they had quoted and they were now $30 more per person per service. I explained the situation, that it was a special day for several girls etc and they were not moved. I then left three messages for the spa director and she NEVER returned my calls! Since I had a room booked at the hotel, I called the hotel manager to see if there was anything he could do and he simply said "No, but he would be willing to cancel my reservation without the normal cancelation fee". Horrible!! Not only did I cancel all of our reservations, but I will NEVER use this hotel or Spa again!
Pros: .
Cons: .

Terrible Customer Service
by kristenhayer01
I booked both the Avalon hotel and the Avalon spa for a girls weekend to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. Last Saturday, one week before the event, I was notified by the someone at the spa that they were being sold and the services we had booked were not available. I would have understood, except that that they didn't honor their original prices and didn't offer an alternative package of services. I left a message for the Spa manager to see if there was anything she could do, and she didn't call me back until the next day. When she did call she said there was nothing she could do. I left a message for the hotel manager to see if there was anything he could do, and he has yet to call. I ended up cancelling both the hotel reservation and the spa packages and finding another hotel and another spa. Avalon lost over $1500 in business. If you value a high level of customer service, look elsewhere.

A Valentine's Day RUINED
by petitbijou777
After purchasing a gift certificate over the phone 2 weeks ago, it still hasnt arrived. Many calls later, they assured the certificate would arrive "soon". I called Sunday before Valentine's when I still haven't received the certificate. A convoluted story was spun about possibilities of where it could be and how they werent issuing a replacement, but offered a letter stating the certificate purchase. I said it wasn't acceptable and was seriously re-evaluating becoming a customer because of the poor service even BEFORE I stepped into their hotel. The rep became curt and told me to call back Monday if the certificate still havent arrived and proceeded to HANG UP on me. I called back Monday when there wasn't a certificate and was put on hold. I then gave my number and asked for the representative to call me back. Unsurprisingly, I still have not received a phone call back.

Beautiful business meeting
by notneb3939
Recently hosted a small business meeting and the results were super. My guests were very pleased with the high level of service, the incredible setting, the nearness of downtown Portland and the amazing spa.
The meeting went so well I have re-booked 3 more.
I can't say enough!
Pros: View, Serenity, Rooms

Wonderful!
by jlhjlh
A friend and I recently treated ourselves to the Evergreen pedicures. We were told to arrive early if we wanted to take advantage of the other spa amenities - and we did! The jacuzzi, steam room, saunas, showers and relaxation room were all wonderful! When it was time for our appointment we were taken back to a nice room with comfortable chairs and relaxing atmosphere. The gals that did our pedicures were great and very friendly. Our one HUGE complaint is that since the pedicure/manicure stations are shared with the salon stations in this intimate space, we had to talk over blow dryers for most of our 80-minute pedicures, which was annoying and not relaxing at all. If they'd separate out these spaces, it'd make the luxury well worth the price.
Pros: Friendly, Spa use, Valet parking
Cons: Noisy

This Place is Great
by Shava
I have been to the Avalon Hotel & Spa for spa services and enjoy it everytime. The spa is clean, the service is superb and the spa treatments are wonderful. I highly recommend this spa to anyone looking for a quiet spot to relax and get pampered. I have lived in NY and in LA and this spa beats any service I've recieved in both of those cities.
Pros: Gratuity included, Not crowded, wonderful service
Cons: Pricey (but worth it)

My favorite Portland spa
by morganica
I'm new to Portland and this is the fourth spa I've tried in five months but the first real spa I've found. (Dosha, Fratangelo's and Nyla's were the other three and they can't touch this place.) One of the best values around; prices are reasonable but still include a 15% gratuity. Beautiful, serene surroundings with lovely art, you get the use of their hot tubs, sauna, steam room, etc., when you come in. Alex was a terrific hair stylist who repaired a really terrible cut I received at Nyla's. Tried the facial--very nice--and a pedicure, which I recommend highly. You can come early and have a nice brunch or snack. I highly recommend this place...if you can find it.
Pros: Beautiful, peaceful, great services, includes gratuity!
Cons: hard to find

WOW! I travel all over the world and I never thought that I would receive such EXCEPTIONAL service from a hotel in Portland. Although the hotel is not centrally located in downtown (it's only one and a 1/2 miles away), they have the best amenity ever...FREE transportaion in a Lincoln Town Car...talk about pampering...they drive so you don't have to (or park!). STAY THERE!
Pros: Free Town Car, Attention to Detail, Service
