Upon entering this establishment, I knew right away the atmostphere wasn't my style. I don't like large dining hall type places with a lot of noise. I like dining to be more of an intimate experience. The food was delicious, the lobster

If you like Asian food you can do so much better in all the wonderful authentic Chinese restaurants around the city, and you won't have to spend so much money. While the space is nice and attracts a crowd, this place is overpriced and the food and service are sloppy. Our dessert especially was a joke, it looked like a mess of a cake you could buy at any diner.
I've been to Asia de Cuba and really liked it, as China Grill is in the same restaurant group I expected better. Again, save your money and go elsewhere, not worth it!!

Fabulous asian-fusion family style restaurant. I have taken many clients here and it always gets rave reviews. Tons of great dishes on the menu but i would personally suggest the calamari salad - it cannot be missed!

I rarely venture to midtown in hopes to find truly excellent meal, especially directly by Time Square, however China Grill has proven that they can provide great food and great service even in a touristy area. A few friends and I went to China Grill for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. This was our first time there, but it was recommended by a friend for large groups so we thought we'd try it out. Upon arriving, we were seated immediately with our table (9 people) already set. Right away we were greeted by our waiter with a big smile. We all ordered some cocktails off their list (pear margarita is EXCELLENT!!). After looking at the menu we all placed our orders. The food is meant to share so it just kinda came out as it was ready. That was different but a very cool idea. We passed all the plates around a ate like a big family. It was great. The restaurant was busy but you would have never noticed with the service that we got. We never had to wait long for anything and then when we ordered dessert, it came out with a big "Happy Birthday" written on the plate and a candle. It was adorable!!!! We all had a blast and my boyfriend absolutely loved his birthday dinner. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone, hands down one of the more impressive and memorable restaurant experiences I have had in a while. Thanks you China Grill!!!!!

Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Convienent Location

Cons: Nothing

Service was like they were trying to turn tables every 30 minutes. Starters came out before we had even had a sip of our cocktails and my wife's lobster (cooked to a mush) came to the table 10 minutes after my duck (way overdone). Took a few bites and left as soon as we could. This was our first and definitely LAST visit.

Last night we held a company dinner here- it was fabulous, everyone had a wonderful time! The dinner coordinator, Ela, was completely on the ball with everything in regards to planning the dinner - she had great follow up and organization. The food was delicious, the portions very generous. The servers were incredibly attentive - the dinner ran exceptionally smooth with no hiccups.

I read the recent reviews of China Grill and I think the problem is that people do not know in advance what to expect. All main courses at China Grill, whether on the regular or restaurant week menu, are large portions meant for sharing. Thus, they are priced accordingly. A main dish can set you anywhere between $30 and $60, but when you consider that you receive enough food for two, this is not bad at all. My friends and I went to China Grill last night for the restaurant week. Unlike the previous reviewer, we found it to be a very good deal. For the two appetizers we choose, one main course, and two desserts, we would have paid $94 on a regular night. The restaurant week brought it down to $70. Unlike many other places, which during the restaurant week serve dishes normally not found on the regular menu, China Grill servers some of their most popular everyday items, including the sashimi tempura, calamari salad, spicy dumplings, and skirt steak. We actually ordered all of the above and found them well prepared and delicious. Apart from the food, which all people in our party immensely enjoyed, the service was below average. A couple of drinks we ordered never came and generally, it took much longer than usual for the food to arrive. The check had an item that we did not order or consume, but that was easily fixed. All in all, I recommend this place and look forward to my next visit.

Pros: food

Cons: service

The idea of sharing plates seems not too uncommon at China Grill, so I would be OK with the idea. Also, the food was pretty good, we were not leaving hungry despite sharing a main course and dessert between two. However, ordering from the regular menu (assuming a same-sized main course) would probably have cost about the same - so the idea of restaurant week, being able to try fancy places at a reasonable price, does not really work here. Shame. Otherwise, place is rather noisy, staff was between friendly, courteous and entertaining (all in a positive sense). All in all, a good experience, but not quite worth the price tag.

I went here during restuarant week for lunch when you are suppose to get an appetizer, entree and desert for the price of $24.07. The restuarant was crowded and very full and decorative, once we were seated we were told that the we choose 2 appetizers, 1 entree , 1 desert and pay 24.07 each. So where other restuarants give you your own entree and desert china grill expected you to share your entire meal. This is trully not sticking with the idea of restaurant week, so why participate at all? The spicy beef dumpling was delisicious, and the entree was a skirt steak and lo mein. The entree was shared between two people and was suppose to be sharing portions, but they definately were not. The entree was a one person serving. When desert was presented it was once again a slice of cake that you were suppose to share. I must say that the entire meal was delicous, but five mintues after leaving the restuarant I was still hungary....sharing an entree is not ideal. The atmosphere was great, but I left feeling like I got scammed for restuarant week. I would not go back

Pros: upbeat, nice decor

Cons: small portions

This place in midtown is popular with the business crowd and it can get pretty loud in the evenings. The restaurant is spacious and lighting is dim, and food is what one would call "Asian fusion"--Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and French influences abound. Try the skirt steak with lo mein, and their wasabi mashed potatoes have a very nice zing... Go with a group, cuz it's family style.

I went there for my birthday. Since it was an early dinner, we didn't have to wait. The portion of food and the taste were great. My boyfriend is very picky, but he really liked this place. I'm not a fan of drinking, but the mango martini was great.

Dined at the China Grill during Restaurant Week, just so happened it was also the night of the Lexington Ave steampipe explosion. Despite the significant delay in our arrival, we were seated immediately (it was pretty crowded) and greeted by what would turn out to be, one of the friendliest, most attentive waitress'. Considering our order was off of the pre fixe menu, the food portions were extremely generous, down to the superb dessert. We were so full after, we could not believe we were actually getting a discount! We did order quite a few drinks, as they were just so tasty. We probably remained at our table ordering drinks for about an hour after our meal had been completed, and at no point did we feel pressured to leave. It was a great dining experience.

I came here during restaurant week with my newly married wife. Booked at opentable and when presented with a menu option different from what advertised i brought to the attention of the manager that i signed for a different deal. After having listened to me he very kindly and professionally agreed. This was the opening to the best meal we had in two weeks of food tasting. We tried them all, Daniel, One if by Sea two if by land, and countless others in a two weeks nYC food experience. quite simply delicious food, and an unforgettable cheese dessert. I still drawl when i think about the dumplings and the dessert we were served.

My husband and I tried to eat at China Grill this past Saturday night, but did not. Arriving promptly at 9:30, we were immedately seated, it looked like a promising dinner. After 15 minutes at our table, nobody from the restaurant had been by - we had no menus, no water glasses, and had not been asked about drink orders. At this time, my husband got up and the hostess know that we had not been served. At this time we were presented with menus, who still did not ask if we would like water or to order drinks. After five more minutes of no service, we decided that it was not worth waiting over 20 minutes for any attention, not at a restaurant of that caliber. As we left the restaurant, my husband let the hostess know that our table was open, since we were leaving. She promptly responded, "Ok, thanks." That was the last straw for us, resulting in this review. Any restaurant that claims to be a quality restaurant should be focused on customer service, of which we got none. It is unacceptable that they did not send anyone over to our table, except with menus, for 20 minutes, and they do not deserve our business. It is also unacceptable that the hostess was so clueless as to not inform the manager we were unhappy or properly respond to our displeasure when we let her know again.

We have never walked out of a restaurant before for any reason, but the treatment at China Grill was so bad that we could not think of staying. Luckily for us, Steve at Del Frisco's could fit us right in, since they always provide exceptional customer service.

I went to China Grill with high expectations and I was very disappointed. The meal was really not that good. Considering its repuation I was hoping for more, like better decor, better service and better food. I will not be going back to China Grill. And the worst part was that the place left a horrible smell on my clothes!! I left and smelt that place all day on me, it was gross, had to get everything dry cleaned. Yuck!

I had dinner with a co-worker and we split the calamari salad, crunchy spinach and Ahi Tuna. I thought the tuna was excellent but was somewhat dissapointed w/ the salad (chewy) andthe spincah (greasy). The $36 price tag on the tuna was high considering it was ala carte but it is NYC afterall. I would not say don't go but at the same time I've had better.

So my 1st stop for restaurant week was China Grill last night (1/24). Although I think Restaurant week is a great opportunity for everyone to experience moderate-expensive dining, I don't think it's a good basis to judge how an establishment really is, or is it? bc lets face it, ALL restaurants, especially, waiters/waitresses HATE restaurant week bc its super packed and the bill is much smaller than what they normally get. Do we care? No, bc we are cheap damnit, and we're here so serve us, and take that attitude and shove it. yes I am in a bad mood today.

Now, on to the food. So we get there and I did not realize that they serve family style which is a curse if u want variety and not if u tend to share anyway. Ok so since it was 3 of us, we got to choose 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts. We chose: the vegetable dumplings w/ cucumber-seaweed salad & spicy tomato broth (good) and the crackling calamari salad w/ lime miso dressing (way too much lime, I couldn't even have more than 3 bites), sweet soy marinated skirt steak w/ wok sauted lo mein noodles (pretty good, I really liked the sauce), and the wild mushroom profusion pasta w/ sake Madeira cream sauce (I did not like this at all, it tasted like some jar fettucini sauce from ragu, not good), I don't remember what desserts we got but it was sorbets and something small and not memorable. The service was ok tho did feel like the food was pushed out to us super fast, almost too fast. All in all, it wasnt horrible (you weren't expecting me to say that right?), I would maybe go back but definitely on a regular night.

We made reservations for 14 people on a Saturday night and had a family-style dinner. The salad portions were enormous. The entrees were also descent sized. Unfortunately, many of the dishes--like the crispy spinach and the calamari salad--were completely inedible. The chef should have held back on the grease and pepper. The dishes were soaked in oil and tasted worse than some street food in Chinatown. The dining space has the potential to be something spectacular, but it felt like a midtown office building lobby converted into a makeshift restaurant. The music boomed so loudly that socializing for our group was a musical-chairs challenge. The service was fine, but not standout. It seems like the kind of place where midtown workers put the tab on the company card. China Grill is over-hyped and overpriced.

I went here twice during Restaurant week.
The food was cooked perfectly. Over the course of my two dining experiences, I had the lamb, dumpling, tuna tartar, and noodle appetizers. the dumplings were average but the lamb was cooked wonderfully. The meat just came off the bone.
As for entrees I had lobster, steak, and duck- all cooked perfectly.. I'm usually very skeptical about how my meats are cooked but I asked for medium rare and got just that. The flavors were incredible and the meat was tender.
Dessert was probably their weak spot. The sorbets that came with their cream cheese mousse was mediocre. The flavors didn't go with the cream cheese at all. It was too sweet and clashed with the smooth cream cheese.
As for drinks, I'd recommend the mango martini.
We obviously ordered more than what they offered for RW, and it was more than enough.
Service was great.. There were always two or more waiters attending to our table and they came by at appropriate times.

i guess it's my own fault for not scanning citysearch for china grill
restaurant week reviews before going there a couple of weeks ago but
yes, china grill's participation in this promotion is ridiculously
tacky (a party of two is offered an appetizer each, ONE entree to
share and ONE dessert to share). to start things off, when we arrived
on time for our reservations we were immediately informed that there
was a wait (which ended up being around 30min) to be seated.
lame. i realize that RW can be a busy time but it was a tuesday nite
and every other semi-upscale restaurant seems to be able to seat you
at the time of your reservation. and i didnt have a problem
whatsoever with them maintaining their whole family style approach
with their RW menu (the reason they only offer ONE entree to share)
until our entree arrived and it wasn't at ALL noticeably larger than
your average dinner entree. not to mention the fact that the both
the entree and appetizers were dripping with oil and just generally
kind of gross. so when our ONE dessert arrived we were already
annoyed and sick to our stomachs and no longer fit to enjoy the only
portion of the meal that actually tasted good. on a more positive note,
aside from the delayed seating, the service was really attentive and
accommodating. unfortunately, due to the tasteless approach to RW, i
won't be returning anytime soon and am glad i only lost $35 to an
unpleasant dining experience.

I went for restaurant week. I'm not going to comment on if it was a deal or not, but I will say that the food was really, really good. The portions are really large (it's all family style), and my friends and I couldn't stop eating even after we were full. We got the cold noodles to start, and veggie dumplings. Both were a little on the spicy side, but not too much to handle. Our main courses were excellent. We had the bbq salmon, which was cooked just perfectly. My favorite dish was the chicken. I don't remember what it was called, but it came with a side of cabbage veggies with ginger that was just addicting. The drinks were also really good! Try the Halo!!! I won't come back here unless I have a date to pay for me, but it was definitely a great experience.

Very good food here and nice service. Was not disappointed in any way. Location is very convenient too.

I have been to this restaurant once per year over the past five years and have always had a pleasant experience. On my last visit we had an awesome waitress. On previous visits I always found the service to be excellent. They serve big portions so eveything is made to share. I have tried many of the items on the menu and found all of them to be good. I especially like their beef dishes. Lobster pancakes are special. This restaurant will provide a great evening out and a good price value.

Service here is friendly, attentive, and overall excellent. Beef dumplings were good, the seared tuna was also good, and their lobster mashed potatoes are also good as well. Restaurant is quite roomy. Would probably go back.

We had a blast! I must admit, having read the reviews, I
was a little nervous about our planned visit to China Grill. But, a friend
and I had decided to visit the restaurant and try the Restaurant Week menu.
Yes, we did wonder about "having to share" the main course. Our waiter,
Nick, couldn't have been nicer. He saw our indecision and jumped in! We
went with the flow. He suggested two appetizers - they were tasty and we
were almost full by the time we finished them. However, we carried on and
went with the skirt steak he suggested. That too was cooked perfectly, and
would have fed 4 people! We listened to him, and the ice cream and
cheesecake were scrumptious. Nick, was personable, attentive,
down-to-earth, and really made us feel special - not just "Restaurant Week"
customers! We'd definitely come back!

Yes, the restaurant is pricey but the portions are made to be shared. I had the lobster pancakes, which is a deceiving name. They aren't fried pancakes ... they are lobster rolled in crepes. AMAZING. Crab cakes were so on point! We sat in their outdoor dining area which was very lovely and comfortable. Our cocktails were made perfectly, the food was abundant and delicious. Definitely would recommend this place! :)

The establishment looks like a nice, classy dining place. My dinner was accompanied by fruitflies and i had to constantly swat them with my hands.

If you want authentic fusion food, try going somewhere else.

i came here with 2 friends for restaurant week last night. the place is very large, sort of cavernous, and dimly-lit. we were told that they were running late, so we ended up waiting around 20 minutes for our table.

the regular prices looked pretty expensive (~$15 per appetizer, ~$35 per entree) so the restaurant week menu (at $35pp) seemed like a sweet deal. though we had 3 in our party, we were told that we could only get 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts portions would be adjusted accordingly. i guess everythings served family style.

we chose the vegetable dumplings & lamb spareribs to start. i thought their dumplings were good shreaded vegetables stuffed into thin skins, pan-fried, and drowned in a slightly spicy & tangy red sauce. the ribs came in a huge pile and were very aromatic grilled and brushed with a sweet hoisin-like sauce.

for our entrees, we chose the bbq salmon and the grilled skirt steak. the salmon was cooked medium it was really fresh and we detected no fishy taste. it was a little bland though, and i didn't really detect any bbq taste. the steak was cooked medium rare it was very tender, but came in the same sauce as the lamb. the steak also came with a pile of lo mein noodles that were springy and tasty.

there were only 2 desserts to choose from we got the cheesecake mousse & the trio of sorbets/ice cream. the cheesecake was pretty good and light for cheesecake. the sorbets were normal, but they were both good endings to the meal. overall, i dont think the food is good/cheap enough for me to come again, but i had a good time while i was there.

Cons: food is only ok, not worth it at normal prices

Good vibrant midtown place to take people you want to wow with NYC-ness. Food is very rich and flavorful. Our waitress was very proactive, courteous and helpful. It is a bit loud but not impossibly so. Had the lamb spare ribs (sweet and succulent), lobster mashed potatoes (wow!) and duck entree (tasted like a juicy steak!) and mousse dessert. These are all things I don't usually prefer to eat but I loved every bite. Expensive-- over $100 per person but we had ordered a moderately expensive bottle of wine & dessert-- so I think $100/person is decent.

I have had dinner with my girlfriend before at China Grill and had an ok experience. So when I had 6 business guests from out of town coming, it seemed a decent choice.

WRONG! We had an 8:15pm reservation but by 9pm, we were still not seated - very
embarassing for a business dinner client. The host's explanation was they could not control when people finish dinner. What are reservations for in the first place?

We would have left and gone to another restaurant but the host kept saying that a table was opening up in 5 minutes, people had just paid, etc - except when I went to check the table, they were ordering dessert.

We left at 9:15pm for another restaurant and promptly got seated.

Definitely not a good impression on the client.

To start off they lost our reservation and instead of trying to fix their mistake they made us wait almost 2 hours to be seated. After they finally seated us the service SUCKED the place was too loud and the food was bland and over priced. Perhaps, we should have read between the lines. The fact that the resteraunt staff couldn't even keep a reservation straight, not to mention that after screwing up, they told us to go scratch and made us wait almost 2 hours.

In retrospect, I should have gone to McDonalds, made myself wait a couple hours to eat and told myself off and I could have saved a few dollars and had about the same food.

My suggestion would be to eat elsewhere.

but their pan-asian fare was so so. we shared many dishes but none really stood out except the spinach, wow!! how they do that?? it is a happening loud place can't hear each other speak with group of 6. took a while to be seated. service once we ordered became snail paced. bathrooms are kool. bar scene packed, lots of pretty people. but for food, I'd rather go elsewhere. SUM IT: just to try their spinach otherwise guess good for expense accounts

We had high expectations for this restaurant and the service was good but there was no app, entree, and desert for each person. We had to share two apps, two entrees, and two desserts among four of us. The restaurant's music was too loud for four people to be able to converse and the ventilation was horrible. We smelt like the restaurant all day. The food was cooked nicely but again we were all expecting much more.

I always remember China Grill as having great food. Pair that with the high, high ceilings, huge dining space and impeccable service and you have yourself a great restaurant. However, a recent dining experience during restaurant week left more to be desired. The food was decent although, not spectacular. The skirt steak was good, items on the menu for restaurant week were slightly limited but even items ordered off the restaurant week menu were a little disappointing. I would still go back but, the food will have to be amazing the next time around.

I go there with my UK colleagues who seem to love the place, but I'm underwhelmed. It's a huge space with a cavernous front dining area, bar area, and rear dining area - and very loud everywhere except the ladies room! The food is tasty but definitely heavy on greens, noodles, and low ticket items. There were lots of harried waiters tripping over our things. Drinks were ok, had a mango martini that was tasty. I think there are better places in the city.

My boyfriend & I had been looking for engagement rings on a Saturday afternoon. After finding what we wanted, we were very hungry and wanted to celebrate. We wer in a great mood and decided to go China Grill for a late unch prix fixe. The place was practically empty and they sat us at a terrible table next to the set up / register table. The waitress gave us attitude because we orderred the price fix and not the regular menu. We politely asked to move our table to a less obtrusive area, and the waitress hasseled us instead of accommodating us. We didn't complain. The food was mediocre. We didn't complain. However, the rudeness of the waitstaff was unbearable and really put a damper on our joyous mood. This place is the worst ever!

For my birthday celebration friends took the liberty of taking me to China Grill. At first I was shocked by the price, but the excellent and friendly service from our waiter "Jack" was great and the duck salad was the best ever. The highlight of the night was just the warm happy birthday from the owner and the warm pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant, I can't wait to go again.

Overall, the ambiance at China Grill is mediocre and generic, the food was nothing special and overpriced and the staff was snobby and dismissive. We went to China Grill for Restaurant Week. For $140 + tax/tip we received only 2 appetizers and 2 entrees for four people. Despite promises of greatness, the appetizers were small (6 dumplings to share, 1 chicken breast and 1 thigh to share...). When we mentioned that the dishes seemed small for $35/pp, the manager was haughty and rude and the waiter sarcastic. The treatment might have been tolerable if the food was excellent, but it wasnt. We left hungry and annoyed.

I went thinking it was a restaurant you have to experience in New York, and left wishing I spent my money elsewhere. The food was horrible, we had the Peking duck salad, tuna, vegetable fried rice, and the spinach. The food all came out exactly two minutes after we placed our order. The salad looked as though they have a premixed trash bag full of it, and they just dump a heap of it on a plate. The tuna was room temperature and had to have been already prepared considering how quickly it came out. The fried rice was good. Bottom line, the food is way over priced for the poor quality, and little care they put into preparing it. You are definitely not missing out on anything if you never make it here, you will only find yourself thinking that you could have gone to your local Chinese restaurant.

Outside staff- poor english. Apps- chili shrimp, tempura sashimi, entree's- rack lamb, kobe tartar, crispy spinach. Shrimpfirst. Next tartar- sent back- waiting for tempurah app. Waiter didn't understand bc language barrier, became hostile. MIA bottle of wine... next lamb and spinach, sent back, waiting for tempura app, wine. Complained to manager. Was the last we saw of the waiter until he came to collect check. Temporah gross, seared tuna drowned in cream sauce. Spinach inedible, Tartar disgusting, lamb so well done, was hockey puck, didn't eat any of. Wanted to show manager, bus boy cleared apparently didn't understand either... from time manager came no one checked on us again. Wine came right before entree, wanted to sit and drink. bus boy brought the check w/o being asked for. every table outside complained to manager. manager comped bottle, bill still 157 for 5 dishes, 4 of which were inedible.

I've been to China Grill all over the US, in Miami, Vegas, and a number of times in NY. I've never been disappointed. The music is a little bit louder, but the food is excellent. The Tuna steak is great, the service is very good, overall i recommend everyone to go there. The dishes are family style with good portions. The ambience, is trendy with plenty of room all around. Great pick.

This restaurant has been around for years, and it just keeps on going. It's pretty typical for modern "pan-asian" but this restaurant was pan-asian before there was pan-asian. It's always busy, always a hotspot. The food is always excellent. There's so much variety even the pickiest of eaters will be happy. This is an adult crowd, I wouldn't recommend kids. Not someplace you want to come to with anything less than "business casual" or you'll feel out of place. It's pretty much a fashion show in here.

You know when you go someplace and the food is good... but in general (nothing really stands out as being WoW) Well they had that banana smash desert -- that was really good.. we had the lamb ribs (pretty good) & the duck salad (also tasty)

Price wasnt too hard to handle - Would eat there again (but i'd give it sometime -- its not a do it again next week)

History of the brand:

In 1987 China Grill New York opened to a packed dining room and immediate critical acclaim. By its fifth anniversary, the restaurant was as busy as ever and regarded as one of the hottest destination spots in New York City.

Jeffrey Chodorow's labor of love, his first and only venture into the restaurant world, had proven to be an enduring success in a scene where restaurants seemed to come and go overnight. But something was missing...he wanted mashed potatoes.

Never satisfied with the perception that China Grill was a "Chinese" restaurant, Jeffrey broadened the horizons to include even less likely pairings. "Why not wasabi mashed potatoes? Lobster mashed potatoes? What about lobster pancakes or a peking duck salad?" Chodorow's insistence on thinking outside the wok would set the pitch for what would become one of the most innovative and highest-grossing multi-concept restaurant companies in the world.

Over twenty years and twenty locations later, China Grill Management and its affiliates continue to produce some of the most original, critically acclaimed and wildly popular dining hotspots in major cities across the globe. Our restaurants have been featured in such diverse publications as The New York Times, In Style, Bon Appetit, The LA Times, 944, and The Miami Herald (to name just a few) and have won awards ranging from Zagat NYC's "most popular nightspot" to Esquire Magazine's "Best New Restaurant." Why? Because we redefine the very meaning of "restaurant." The philosophy operating behind every CGM property is as simple as it is daring-that serious food and dazzling spectacle are not mutually exclusive. By pairing the culinary ingenuity of world-class chefs, atmospheres crafted by internationally renowned designers and the highest standards of service, CGM's mission is to create an unrivaled and unforgettable dining experience for every single customer. It is this combination of uncompromising vision and gourmet expertise that has earned China Grill Management a phenomenal reputation as a trendsetter at the vanguard of dining.
