I liked the quality of the food. The service was not great, but maybe we weren't lucky.
I think it's too pricey and some dish were not cooked well!

Pro: quality of product used
Cons: Service, Price, Cooking

Pros: GREAT SERVICE AND FOOD

Cons: NONE

Four of us went to I Truilli last week because we heard it was decent. The service was not attentive at all. Out of the four dishes one was passable the other three were just plain awful. There really is no excuse because this place is not cheap. I would never go back nor would I tell anyone to come here.

I've here twice -- the first time for a regular dinner and the second time for Valentine's Day. My regular dinner of homemade pasta was amazing, but the Valentine's Day dinner and cattle room they herded all of the couples into was atrocious. Terrible service, cold food, all around awful experience. So great place, don't go there for V Day.

After reviewing the menu online and hearing such great things about this restuarant, i was very diappointed to say the least when i ate there last night. We started off with the panzoretti- Terrible! There was barely any cheese, nor did I see or taste tomatoes. It was more like a donut than a calzone. We also had the Inzimino and Pulpo - both very bland and uneventful. For a second course, we ordered two half orders of the Malloreddus and Tonnarelli. The pasta was good. You could definitely taste that it was homemade. The Malloreddus was delicious i must say! For entrees, we had the Zuppi di Pesce and Coda di Rospo. Both very bland. The Zuppi di pesce was so disappointing! Barely tasted like anything! The sauce was very watery. The monkfish was ok. Very simple. Nothing do go "wow" over. We didnt even bother attempting the desserts. Overall, I would never go back or recommend the restuarant.

I went there and took my mother. The waiter was great but the food was not that great and was extremely expensive . Don't get me started on the size of te portions -- especially for the apperitizers and drinks, including wine.

Yes it was a crowed Hursday nightr but the table was terrible and the service amtched.

Ran out of 3 of the specials by 8.30 PM - the food was served at different times and was uneven.

The drink glasses were the size of shot glasses.

All and all not a good value

After reading a few of the recent reviews, I was a bit skeptical to keep our reservation for last Friday night(restaurant week) but I am so glad we did. It was trulli a wonderful experience. I didn't know about the back garden until we got there (and I didn't reserve it) but when I asked if we could sit there the hostess said it would be a few minutes wait (and it was less than a 10 minute wait). We had a lovely table in the back. We asked our waiter if he recommended the $35 prix-fixe (I explained that we are locals who dine out often) and he highly encouraged it - rightfully so. We started w/ the mini calzones (very good - but not part of the prix-fixe) and then we each got different appetizers and main courses - all were delicious. The service was excellent. We enjoyed our romantic evening and we were not rushed at all (unlike many other places during the 2 weeks). Granted the total bill came to $200 (incl. tax/tip) - so we didn't necessarily need to dine there when we did, but we still loved it.

Whatever you think Italian food should be, it will not be found here. I Trulli has become a restaurant that has outlived its time in New York. The review posted by JSirbs is accurate and fare. The food was simply bad from start to finish. If you are looking for a quality Italian meal, you will be disappointed. I think it is fair to say that I Trulli is nothing more than an OVERPRICED DINER disquised as an Italian restaurant. Do not waste your time or money like I did. Big mistake that I hope others will not follow.

Pros: okay service. Cons: Food one or two notches better than a good pizza shop. Service just okay. Noisy. Cramped tables. Expensive for what you get. Conclusion: "Truly," forget it!

I'm very sad to say this but I went to I Trulli for my college graduation dinner and I did not leave pleased. I tried the restaurant out before and dined with just two people and it was lovely. When I showed up with my party of 10 a) we did not get the garden as I had requested over a month beforehand b) we had the absolutely worst service I have ever experience in NYC...and that's saying a lot. The waiter completely forgot to even write down people's meals, we sat at the table for over an hour before anyone took our order, and the staff was incredibly rude. If you do decide to go to this restaurant I recommend that you only order the pasta. The meat is horrendous--either cold or overcooked. My friend thought she was ordering a T-bone steak but it turned out to be pork chops. I won't ever be returning to I Trulli. There are plenty of other restaurants in nyc that are Truly better.

Great dinner. I was fortunate enough to experience a fabulous dinner last night. I was a bit hesitant to go out on a rainy night and then was so glad i did. Everyone was friendly and the food was great. The room was so warm and inviting, it included a beautiful fireplace. I love eating homemade pasta and this was definetly one of the best, i have had in a longtime. The wine list had a page of wine reccomendations which we chose from and that rounded the meal off perfectly. I can't wait to go back.

TERRIBLE SERVICE AND ATTITUDE. I TRULLI USED TO BE GOOD MANY YEARS AGO WHEN THE OWNER WAS INVOLVED. STOP GOING A FEW YEARS AGO AND TRIED AGAIN RECENTLY. STILL TERRIBLE ATTITUDE AND OVER PRICED. NEEDS PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND SERVICE. I FEEL BAD FOR SECONDARY WAITERS TRYINGTO MAKE A LIVING BUT GREETING AND DOOR PEOPLE REALLY NEED HELP. IF THEY DON'T WANT TO BE THERE THEN QUIT! I TRULLI E UN TRULLO.

Unusual appetizers, such as the superb Capesante (Pistachio-Crusted Seared Sea Scallops (hot & perfectly cooked) over Black Chickpea Salad (cold)). Excellent homemade pasta. The desserts need work. Impressive but pricey wine list, including some interesting ones by the glass.

We showed up on a Friday night at 7:30 without a reservation. We tried to get into Enoteca for a more affordable meal, but it was full, so we were sent over to I Trulli. The restaurant was also busy, but we were seated promptly at a table in front of the fireoven (which was actually a heavily trafficked area). Although nothing truly caught our eye, we finally ordered and were served high-quality food with surprisingly generous portions. Not huge, but sizeable for an upscale restaurant like this. The home made pasta was delicious, and the buffalo mozzarella was so flavorful almost meaty. The wine was expensive so we skipped it, but from the reviews, it sounds like it might have been worth trying their selection. Waiter was a bit aloof but the rest of the staff was very attentive. Definitely recommend especially if you're willing to splurge.

This place has a very nice ambiance, we sat right by the fire, which was great. The server was friendly. One annoying point was that it took about 45 minutes in between courses. I was in no rush and it wasn't a big deal, but that's just a long time to wait. Dinner ended up taking almost 3 hours! The food was very good. The med. sea bass was delicious. The fresh mozz and tomato in the pastry puff app. was also fantastic. The crab ravioli was ok, a little undercooked for my taste. Drinks were strong and were refilled quickly. We weren't too happy when my friend had a vodka drink on the table and the waiter came by and filled it with water, without asking if it was water or a drink! Also a bit pricey, but to be expected. Overall pretty good.

Let?s face it, we are all ?critics? when it comes to cuisine. I could talk about the cheesy-ninety-eighties, country-club cuisine that the Chef at I Trulli delivers like Lamb and Veal Chops smothered in gelatinous, demi-glace from a can paired with improperly blanched vegetables. But this is not what brought me back to I Trulli after a long, interrupted departure a couple a months ago. I heard that somehow it was different- under new management, better service? something to those sorts. I admit it. I was looking for value and a simple plate of pasta. I was amazed at the difference. The servers looked sharp, the music was perfect, the lighting was romantic, and the knowledge/discipline of the staff had changed. It was a different I Trulli. Afterward, I went back several times with the same results. Magic! UNTIL, last night! The lights were too bright, the music was selected by the ?sommelier? I was told (including pop-culture music that my 20 daughter listens too), the servers (I came late) were walking around without ties as they left early for the shift, and the managers on the floor were horribly poised and dressed. (Over the summer we had a hip, spiky haired guy with sharp-witted, intelligence and a distinguished, older Italian gentlemen whose gracious service was a refreshing welcome.) Tonight, there was no one whatsoever. On our visit, the ?Sommelier?, was more interested in talking to her fellow coworkers, including the too-young assistant, than she was with us. We asked for her, not her assistant. Maybe she has her hands full in such a slow restaurant? Long story short: Our biggest let-down was our after-dinner drinks. We sat at the end of the bar while listening to every damn staff member complain about his and her job and how the restaurant had changed- well, we agree, CitySearch. Everyone always bitches about the food and the Chef on CitySearch. This just goes to show you the value of a good manager. Such a shame!

I don't usually do these, but recently I went to I trulli for dinner and had such a nice time that I wanted to share it. I was most struck by the friendliness of the staff. I was greeted at the door and at the table with genuine enthusiasim. Our server was funny and knowledgeable, he consistendly checked on us and was helpful both with our questions about the menu and for suggestions of places to go after dinner. The food was great as well, fresh pasta like I've never had any where else and a great molten chocolate cake dessert. Basically I can't wait to go back so I can try everythign else on the menu.

Bottom Line: I had a terrible dining experience. I took my girlfriend out to dinner for her birthday here, and it's safe to say I will NEVER be dining here again. I requested a table in the garden, and first we were brought to a table that had a spotlight right on it. The two tables to either side of this one were dimly lit, but the hostess did not even think to seat at either one of these tables. Appalled at the scene, I asked that we be seated at one of the tables right next to this one, and we sat down. After we ordered a bottle of wine, the waiter came by to take our order, but he forgot to mention the specials for the evening. I had to ask him what they were, and when he started rattling them off in broken English, he barely knew what items were available. I also had to refill the wine glasses myself the entire evening. When we had finished our meal and were about to order dessert, I excused myself and walked over to the hostess. I mentioned that it was my girlfriend's birthday and that I would like to have a birthday candle lit on her dessert. I had called in advance to make sure that they do this, and I was assured that they do. I told the hostess where we were sitting, and she told me that it would be taken care of. Sure enough, when our desserts came out, there was no birthday candle. We ate our desserts and I explained to my girlfriend what had happened. Still furious, I went back to the hostess to explain what had happened. I spoke with a different hostess, and she apologized and offered to bring another dessert out. I denied the offer because at that point, what difference would it have made -- the moment had passed. I expressed my disappointment again and walked back to my seat. A few minutes later, the hostess who had made the mistake came to our table and apologized. I said I was sorry too - sorry for ever coming here in the first place!

If you're thinking about dining at i Trulli, save yourself a headache and go somewhere else.

I took my wife out for dinner to I trulli tonight and left very disappointed. It's such a shame that such a nice place serves such awful food. We ordered the grilled octopus appetizer which was so rubbery that you couldn't even cut it. Not only that but it smelled disgusting. I ordered the cavatelli with broccoli rabe which was dry and pasty. the portion was also very small and unsatisfying. My wife ordered the linguini with seafood and that was also a huge flop. the pasta was thrown in a bowl with no sauce, totally dry and flavorless. the seafood consisted of five mussels (three were empty) two small clams and a few measly pieces of overcooked shrimp. I could not believe my eyes! It was as if a ten year old kid was cooking in the kitchen. Clueless! I sent my wife's dish back because is was so unacceptable we would have been idiots to not speak up. The wines were also very expensive. I trulli is a gamble. I have been there before and had a great dinner but tonight was atrocious. Don't risk wasting your money here. they need to get there act together. there are too many other consistently good Italian places in the city so why bother. I won't go back.

I hadn't been to I Trulli for years and decided to go the other evening with friends who wanted to learn more about Italian wine, and I had often told them of the fantastic all-Italian wine list they have there. Although I was surprised to see many new faces there, I also was happy to see some familiar ones as well as the owner Nicola who was dancing around the tables and talking about wine with customers as he has since he opened this place (I had heard that he was spending more time downtown at his new restaurant). The homemade pastas are as good as ever (the Cavatelli with cime di rapa is my favorite), although the rabbit ragu' served with the orecchiette, ordered by one of my friends, wasn't quite as good as I remember it. Both the octopus appetizer and the panzerotti were as good as ever and I was pleased to see the addition of new dishes like the Inzimino (which I assume is owed to the Florentine chef) and the Scaloppine alla romana. The wine list was as exciting as always and I LOVED the "declassified" 1988 Chianti (meaning that it was made in Chianti but couldn't be called that) that the owner recommended to me (which was also reasonably priced). I Trulli lacks some of the glamour of some of NYC's more famous Italian eateries but it's great for truly (no pun intended) traditional Italian food (a fact attested to by the presence of so many Italians in the restaurant!). The service wasn't stellar and the restaurant was really crowded by the time our entrees came. But all in all, we had a great time and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food and the excellent wine selection.

So, this is New York City and finding a quiet, intimate, clean place to sit outside is nearly impossible... nearly. The garden at I Trulli is almost totally hidden from the street and the first time I was walked out there I felt like I had left the city. Almost as good as the garden is the fire place that is always roaring during those bitter New York winter months. Nothing is more romantic (my fiance and I had our first date here- Thanks I Trulli!) There is also a great wine bar attached to the restaurant which serves tasting of different Italian wines. The staff is really knowledgeable and eager to answer questions. Oh yeah, and the food is great, a combination of the pasta and hearty sauces my grandmother makes and elegant dishes that (sorry grammy) only a professional could make. Overall one of my favorite places to eat in the city. If you haven't gone you're missing out!

So, this is New York City and finding a quiet, intimate, clean place to sit outside is nearly impossible... nearly. The garden at I Trulli is almost totally hidden from the street and the first time I was walked out there I felt like I had left the city. I visited I Trulli recently with my girlfriend's parents. The four of us all have different expectations, and tastes, even dietary needs. We all found our meals to be exceptional.
Primarily the menu is Southern Italian. ( the owner from Puglia ) However there were a number of traditional dishes from a variety of regions within Italy. The wine list was equally diverse. Italy has many great wines to offer, and I Trulli's wine list holds some great finds. Our waiter was able to speak with personal knowledge, and love of some lesser know wines that I would never have know about.
For dinner: I was able to order an authentic Puglian dish (pasta made fresh by the owner's mother, Dora) along with a glass of wine from the same region. It was FANTASTIC! Very light, and flavorful. My girlfriend enjoyed a traditional dish from Piedmont, along with a glass of Barbaresco. Our other dinner companions love fresh fish, but find many times in Italian restaurants that the preparation is overdone. The waiter was so accommodating and knowledgeable when asked about the preparation and the spices used. The fish was fresh, not oily, nor was it overly salted or spiced.
For dessert: I recommend a plate of cookies and biscotti, along with a glass of Vin Santo, from Tuscany.
We have eaten at a number of Italian restaurants in Manhattan, and we all agreed that I Trulli was one of the best!
Highly recommended!

Well I finally found a place where they make that delicious homemade pasta, just like my grandmother makes. The rustic warm atmosphere and the wonderful food make for a perfect evening. The staff is unpretencious and lend to a relaxed evening. Would definetly go back both for buisness and pleasure.
Thanks for a wonderful evening.

I was really disappointed in the food. The menu is simple but I?ve been to many great restaurants that do great simple food. But coming to I Trulli was a mistake. I ordered the baked pasta and it was over baked. It came out extremely dry and the cheese was caked on?you know the kind where you can peel off the whole piece at once. My friend ordered the fish and it was over salted. The dish had capers in it already and that would have provided enough salt for the dish.

I would not return and encourage you not to go either.

Terrible service at this restaurant. We had high expectations here, and the waiters were so indifferent and s-l-o-w. They did not even offer us dessert. After 40 minutes of waiting for the bill despite many requests, we went to management who - unbelievably - were arrogant and rude to us. Do not recommend. I Trulli truly knows how to ruin an evening! They need to learn to focus on their service and care about their customers' experience. Disappointing overall. Do not recommend.

We were a party of 7 looking to enjoy an enjoyable evening together, and we experienced terrible service and hospitality, a horrendous attitude, and complete arrogance. There are far better Italian restaurants in the city. Save your evening!

I Trulli has been a favorite of ours for years, and still holds it's place as one of the top Italian resturants in the city. I was reminded of this again when I recently took some clients there who hailed from the UK. The warm cozy atamosphere, combined with the excellent and knowledgeble staff make the dining experience one you will not forget.

My last meal at I Trulli, in March, was a wonderful experience. However, my experience this evening was simply awful. I have no idea why, yet the meal us inedible...truly shocking. I sent back the cavatelli - which is ordinarily amazing - and tried again. To be frank, I feel ill. A very sad dining experience at what was once a reliable establishment.

A good friend of mine recommended I Trulli, so we went on Saturday night 8/26/06. We started with the panzerotti, i've never had them before, they were fantastic. There were four of us eating, we had three orders of four. I'm an Italian who believes that when you go to an Italian restaurant you have pasta. I had three different pasta's combined in one dish. One had sausage with meat sauce, another with traditional sauce, the third with rabbit sauce. All were to die for. Just delicious. The wine list was extensive, and reasonably priced. We had a Barbera D'alba - excellent. We had riccotta cheese cake for desert, that was so-so. The decor made you feel like you were eating in Italy. We highly recommend I Trulli. I almost forgot, there was a delicious meatball in the dish!!

Thank goodness for restaurant week. I'd wanted to visit here and got the opportunity during restaurant week. Nothing was good here - well, except the fireplace. Service was slow and spotty and the dishes were tasteless. Thank God I didn't spend a lot, cause I would have been VERY upset. Do not go here, unless you're cold and wanted to sit near a fireplace!

We've been here twice now (tonight and in early June 05). We've had excellent meals both times. We like the prix fixe menu as it is a good deal for $35. Tonight we had the seafood salad and steak over arugula finished with panna cotta. The steak was cooked perfectly. Very tender. I don't know about the other reviewer's octopus. Ours was the best we've had. It literally melts in your mouth. Bartender made very good wine recommendations per usual. Overall a great experience.

Typical NY afterwork restaurant with large groups, VERY noisy and cramped. Quite dull decporation. Were recomended the tasting menu by the waiter. First out the Panzerotti wich was average. Then onto the Cavatelli wich was very poor indeed, tasteless and poorly combined flavours. After that an overcoocked Fettuccini (asked for Parmesan cheese and the waiter showed up and shaved Peccorino instead!!!!! wich just destroyed the dish). Onto the entrees Rabbit (dry and completely absent of any seasoning at all) and an uneatable streamed Octopus (smelled awful, told the waiter and he said what a shame we didnt like it!!!) The chefs here obviously havent been taught what seasoning is!! Well after this endeavour we werent surprised to find a Nutella filled pastry as dessert (Honestly the Nutella was the only REAL italian about this place). Overall just a VERY poor experience.

I went to NYC for the July 4th Weekend and had dinner here. The food in I Trulli is made fresh nothing out of the can. What I ordered was to die for. I had pasta with sausage in a tomatoe sauce. It was to DIE FOR! The wine list is pretty good. Best Pasta I've ever had. I give it FIVE STARS!!!

my boyfriend and i went to i trulli before going to see a show. our reservation was at 6, it was very quiet and we asked to sit outside and it was beautiful. there is a wonderful, laid back atmosphere and the servers were incredibly nice and attentive when needed. we were running a little late and told our waiter and he quickly got us our dessert and check. they were so sweet, the food was good but not typical of what you would think italian would be like. my favorite part of the meal was the caramel dessert with gelato. the entrees were a little bland but still good. i will definitely go back whenever i come back into town!

I'm surprised by some of the reviews on this site for this restaurant. Our family had a fantastic vacation last summer in Puglia and i Trulli brought back so many great memories of that trip. Like the food in Puglia, i Trulli's cuisine is quite basic, but they do an incredible job of highlighting the flavors of the food and balancing them against each other with great skill. I don't know whether the other reviewers on this site are used to Northern Italian cuisine, but I can guarantee that i Trulli is an extremely authentic representation of the simple, rustic fair that you can enjoy in Puglia. We'll certianly be back to enjoy the food, wine and memories of Puglia.

I'm always suspicious of restaurant week reviews and the reviews on this site explain why. I'm not sure how often these folks eat out, but it's pretty clear that they don't know their calimari from their squid. i Trulli is quite simply an outstanding restaurant. It's food is incredibly fresh, deliberately simple and flavorful and if you're not getting it folks, go back to the Olive Garden. The wine list is absolutely great and the staff are extremely knowledgable and friendly. Ignore the negative reviews here and the editorial review which seems way overly critical of a restaurant that uses the same ingredient in two dishes. I would eat at i Trulli any day of any week.

It's so easy to screw up Italian, but I Trulli thankfully gets it just right. Their pasta is freshly homemade, perfectly cooked, and presented rather plainly -- which is fine. The food stands out even without any grand efforts to make it look good.

It may have been the best Italian meal I've had in the city -- our servers weren't pretentious, the outdoor garden is beautiful (though it can get uncomfortably warm), and everyone's meal was solid.

Do not get the calzone appetizers. Its not worth if for you buck, you mind as well eat a lean pocket at home. The Rabbit ragu was not as flavorful as I had hoped. The Panna Cotta is a MUST eat.

The BF's rabbit meat dish was mediocre.

I would not even recommend this restaurant for first comers

I had the restaurant week menu and was very happy with it. Grilled octopus appetizers was one of the best I've had - and I love octopus. Service was attentive and I never felt like a second class citizen for ordering from the fixed menu. Sorbet could have been better, but otherwise really nice a good restaurant week value. Try to sit outdoors, its lovely!

Service was slow and indifferent, and nothing you expect at this level of restaurant (e.g., no wine list was offered, cheese was not offered with the pasta). One entree was not what was ordered - although the correct item was on the bill - and the other one was cold, rubbery, and disgusting. Waiter was nowhere to be found. Manager's attitude, was "well, that's what happens during resturant week." At these prices, it should have been better

The food here was absolutely delicious. Try the ravioli stuffed with veal and spinach in Sicilian Pistachio sauce, it was great, as well as the fresh sorbet, the best I've ever had. I Trulli has one of the most extensive wine lists in the city, and you'll find its owner, Nicola Marzovilla, to be a friendly and knowledgeable man. If it were a bit cheaper, I'd be coming here regularly.

Massively overpriced Italian Food. Raviolo with spinach and veal tasted like neither of the fillings - just like the butter sauce. Special of spaghetti and pancetta was good - but for $19 I could have made about 10 lbs of it at home for myself. Appetizer of smoked fish was awful - cold scallops and shrimp. Service was very poor - surprising given reviews here. Our waiter disappeared halfway through the meal and we saw him literally head out the door a few mintues later. No one cared to take his place. Go to Via Emilia or Novita - same neighborhood and much better!

I eat out 4 times a week and at various places. I don't spend over $20-$30 unless it's a significant occasion. However, I have found myself finding excuses to go back to i Trulli. I loved the food. The staff are great at making you feel relaxed and yet they always seem to be there when you need something. Once, our waiter actually talked me out of a more expensive wine because another bottle go better with our meal. The owner and his sister make you feel like you've been invited over to their house for dinner. There are some reviews complaining about the menu but I had the same dish the first three times that I was there - and any specials that I have had have been excellent. I can't say enough good things about it. If I could afford to, I'd be there four times a week!
