I took my friends from graduate school to celebrate our end of fall semester (5 of us in total). We went for brunch and didn't have a reservation. We were told it'd be a 45 minute wait--turned out to be about 30 minutes. They seated us

Great little place in the East Village. The night I went they had live music which was a nice touch. Food was great with portions that didn't make you feel stuffed when you walked out. Only complaints are that the music was a little too loud at times and the bathrooms could have used some remodeling/cleaning.

I like this place more for the vibe than for the food. Brazilian in flair, it's a tight space but they often have great music. I haven't been there as a vegetarian but the food I had in the past I thought was good, not great. And the mojitos are killer, so go even to just sit at the bar for a drink. They serve brunch too.

This is the best restaurant ever. Its one of the few that I go to reguraly. The people there are great. They do their best to make you happy and are always pleasant. The food there is the best! One plate that I recommend is the Carne Asada , they do wonders on this dish. The bad only bad thing I can say about this restaurant is that it can get crowded on weekends around 8pm. But for the food its well worth the wait.

I haven't been out for a while, so I'm glad I didn't waste my night out. The food was tremendous -- I loved the shrimp dish I had (camarones) and my husband had a steak, which he also enjoyed. We shared a chayote salad and plantain covered goat cheese appetizers, also delicious. The really great thing is we felt like we had good food but didn't get gouged. To drink we also shared the sangria, which was especially delicious and great for the warm night. Very recommended!

I just moved into the neighborhood and went here with a group of friends over the weekend and the experience was wonderful. I was lucky enough to try a bunch of the entrees -- I liked them all and moqueca(fish cooked in a clay bowl) and lomito (the pork with a delicious passion fruit sauce) were my favorites. The drinks were also good and reasonably priced, I had mojitos and they were delicious and sweetly minty. It was so good I'm going to be back next week!

On a weekend trip I journeyed a bit to try this place out for dinner. It was OK. I think my favorite part of the dinner was the fried yucca - haha. Fried yucca beats french fries any day. I had the Eperanto Steak, which I ordered medium well (which I wish I ordered medium rare). My BF had the same but ordered his medium. He thought it was a little fatty and chewy. Mine was a little tough and I couldn't decide if that was of the result of the quality of the meat or the cooking style. I ordered a glass of the Sangria and was glad I didn't get the pitcher because it tasted awfully imbalanced and I pondered not drinking the rest to bank calories for potentially more sinful/satisfying rounds of this experience. I ordered the volcano cake and couldn't realy pinpoint what was so disappointing. In retrospect, maybe it was overshadowed by the fact the waiter didn't offer us any coffee. I mean, c'mon. If you're serious about being a Latin American restaurant, you need to be serious about your coffee. Seriously. Maybe I was there on an off day...
We also went there for the live music, but oddly there is none on a Saturday. It wasn't a complete overshadow for my birthday weekend though. It was nice that the atmosphere was so open.

Pros: Fried Yucca, Open Atmosphere

Cons: Bad Sangria, Hints of Americanization (lacking that hospitality) takes away from the Latin American dining experience

Went to this place on a friend's recommendation, and I'm really glad we did. Service was good, and we were seated promptly even though it was busy. We drank great mojitos, at a really good price ($6). The food was all delicious as well, and the check was very reasonable in the end. Plus they had a great band playing, and it all made for a really fun night out. We'll be back for sure.

I ordered a traditional Feijoda dish, and it turned out to be a bit too salty. The rice that came with it was lukewarm. The portions of the appetizers were really small for the price. And for a so-called Brazilian restaurant, it's hard to understand why they don't offer one of the most popular and authentic appetizer/snack --- pao de quiejo (cheese bread). I can't wait to try out other Brazilian restaurants, because this one was disappointing. I'd recommend looking for a place where you can actually get what you pay for.

I had a good time at Esperanto's with a party of 6 on a Saturday evening. The place has a nice lively ambiance with a good Latin American decor. They had Salsa and Merengue playing from speakers which helped grasp the feel of the restaurant. We were greeted immediately at the door and was seated promptly after having to wait no more than 10 minutes for another party to leave. The place is a small place, (it's not a hole in a wall-small) so the 6 of us had to sit a little closer together, but I still felt that there was a lot of room to maneuver. The place was busy of course, so our waitress had to run around a few times before we placed our orders. They were very good at starting us up with drinks, offering their signature pitcher of Sangria for the table, but we declined only because we were going out for more drinks later on. Water came in a nice bottle (probably tap) but it was cool; we should've asked for another bottle of water because it would go fast but they responded quickly when we ran out. Now the important part: the food. Appetizers: we had garlic bread and tostones (fried plantains) as appetizers and it came out nice and hot. Entrees: Some of us ordered the steak, which was delectable and made perfectly even as well done. It didn't feel like we were chewing on rubber. The rest had the grilled salmon and that was also made perfect; decent crust on-top and depending on how you ordered it, it flaked off with no trouble at all. Although we were starving and it took some time for the food to come out, it was well worth the wait. PARKING: very hard to find around that neighborhood on a Saturday night. We had to circle around several times before locating a legal spot to park in. If you're driving in, be prepared to park a few blocks away from the restaurant, but it's a lot better than walking 10+ blocks in the bitter cold from the train. Enjoy.

We had a great time eating there the other night. Food was delicious, and the mojitos we drank were amazing, definitely the best I've had in the city. Plus, the waitress was really sweet and attentive to our table and they had a great band playing, so it really made for a great night out.

Reasonably priced, and very much recommended!

I came here for brunch. decent prices. it was beautifullllllllll weather outside so i loved the outdoor seating atmosphere. food tasted good. the only HORRIBLE thing was the service. our waiter sat us, took our order, and never came back. whenever i looked for him, i saw him socializing and laughing with people inside. so i had to get the attention of the waitress who kept shooting me dirty looks whenever i asked for water or another mimosa. its like pulling teeth asking for something. if you see a lady with long black hair, be extra nice. she looks like shes on PMS so maybe you'll have better luck on a diff day!

The place is awesome. It's hard not to like the place, especially if you're a music lover. If you go when there are live musicians you are in for a treat. The service overall is okay. I went for a party of 20 on a sunday and the hostess was very accomodating. Do not go on Sundays after 3 because they will rush you out, rather wait for the 6-12 session. The food is delicious and the Mojitos are awesome!!!! I was happy

Great place for a date and also for large groups. The food is great, and cheap and there is always a wait. Make resverations if you don't want to wait 45 mins for a table. I have been there 2 times in 3 weeks and I have not seen that place empty around dinner time. There is always loud music so you'll have to speak up for people to hear you, and the inside is tight. But overall a great place on the LES.

Went there Saturday night with friends. It was packed, we had reservations and got seated fairly quickly. We got a drink at the bar while we waited for our table, the bartender was a bit rude but I didn't let that ruin my night. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful which made our night much more enjoyable. The food, ah the food, it was absolutely fantastic! everything form the appetizer to the coconou flan in the end our night.

I went to Esperanto on Thursday night and had a great time. It was packed so the hostess advised us to have drinks at the bar while we waited for a table. I had the passion fruit caipirihna and my friend had the kiwi caipirihna, and they were amazing (acutal fruit, not juice!). A few minutes later we got seated in the outside patio. The waitress was very knowledgable about the uncommon menu, and took a lot of time to advise us about how to order. We ended up getting the special Shrimp Pineapple dish and the Moqueca...both great advise from the waitress! As we were leaving, the sweet hostess made sure to say goodnight, ask us how everything was, and even gave us CDs of their music! Highly recommended!

did I mention the passion fruit caipirinha??? -IT'S A MUST TRY!
the overall good vibe and decor transports you to the caribbean...a little oasis located in the big city.

I had high hopes for this restaurant, but I was sorely disappointed. When I arrived with my party, they refused to seat us on the terrace though it was nearly empty. They then took 20 minutes to take our appetizer order. While the food is a passable, it is not close to authentic Brazilian cooking (both my dining companions and I have lived in Brazil). Our entrees took another 30 minutes to arrive once our appetizers were cleared. We had to ask four times for the most basic things like water and bread. We asked several times for our check. While we were waiting for the check--which took another 20 minutes to arrive--the hostess came over to ask us to hurry up so she could seat another party. When we told her we had already asked for the check several times because one of our friends felt sick in the stifling heat (he had recently undergone chemotherapy, which I tried to mention discreetly to the hostess), she asked us to leave. Once we got the check, we left immediately, without comment. I would never go back here.

This place is such a bargain. The food is very good for this price range and the atmosphere is so kick back and fun. it's also a place where people of all ages, dress, etc feel comfortable. There's no pretension just great food and a good time. It gets crowded so you have to wait but so far the wiat has been easy downing drinks and people watching. I almost hate to say how good it is because I don't want it to be too hard to get into on a moments notice but since they have always been nice I must give them their props.

6 OF US WENT FOR A 6:30 RESERVATION ON SUNDAY. THEY WERE OUT OF ALMOST EVERYTHING
ON THE MENU AND ALSO RAN OUT OF BREAD. THE SERVICE WAS AWFUL. HAD TO BEG FOR
SERVING UTENSILS AND WATER. WE ORDERED 2 PITCHERS OF MEDIOCRE SANGRIA. WE
SHOULD HAVE CHECKED THE PRICE BECAUSE EACH ONE WAS $43. WHEN THE CHECK CAME
WE WERE SHOCKED.
THE MUSIC WAS FABULOUS AND THE ATMOSPHERE WAS GOOD ALSO.

Despite many reviews on this site for poor or nasty service- I went with a group of 8 Saturday night and found them to be nothing but courteous and accommodating. Half of us got there well in advance (prompted by the posts of "they will give you table away") and they were willing to seat us before the rest of the group showed up. The food was great and I didn't feel rushed at all. They did suggest ordering dessert when we ordered the meal but only the souffle and that was to take a half hour to prepare. Understandable request if you don't feel like waiting around for a dessert for a half hour. I would recommend and just say make sure you get there on time- it does fill up fast.

I went here with 4 friends for my birthday and we had a great time! I had made a reservation earlier in the day and thankfully when we arrived we had to wait only 5 minutes to be seated. The food was delicious (A+ on the plantain encrusted goat cheese w. leek salad & the chocolate souffle) and our drinks were really good. The mojito is not too sugary, and the capirinha is extra strong. Do not get the mango capirinha though ~ it is awful. Opt for the pineapple or kiwi flavored one instead.

In a party of five, I ordered one a shrimp specials, two people ordered the steak, one had a tapas platter, and one the pollo del la casa. None of us were blown away, and in fact we were all shocked at the size. I read through other reviews and was surprised to find no one else mentioned the size of the meals. Maybe they decided to for whatever reason to give us small meals?? I mean, mine had maybe 7 regular sized shrimp and a small pile of rice and salsa. It tasted fine, but to pay 15 dollars for that is really disappointing. The only comments my two "steak" friends had when the meal came was "I hope this means they went for quality over quantity." After a few bites they informed us that they hadn't. They weren't pleased to pay $17 bucks for what looked like one steak split between the two of them. The waitress wasn't rude but was rather "cool." I found myself being overpolite to them all night because I felt like we were bothersome since two of our guests were Japanese and having problems figuring out the menu. In addition, when my one friend tried to order the steak medium well (in a very timid, almost questioning way) she gave him a look like he was crazy. He yielded and orderd it medium-rare, and she then "approved" his order. Honestly, if the meals were cheaper I would recommend the place. The music was nice, the cocktails were good, the ambiance was pleasant.

Pros: Nice music, relaxed atmosphere, good cocktails

Cons: Overpriced, OK service and food

I loved the chocolate volcano. A bit too cozy...my elbow was rubbing up against the person of the next table. A bit on the salty side, but overall a fun place with great & festive ambiance.

Great date spot, excellent spot to take out-of-towners and friends. Even with reservations you will wait for a table but it's fine because the bar makes excellent mojitos to help pass the time nicely. The food here is delicious but forego the steak because it's average. Also, beware, while it can be inexpensive, the bill adds up fast.

Dining outside makes it a great balmy summernight dinner option.

I have been going here for a few years now.

I like the vibe, food & music. Service is just ok, nice but ok. Perhaps its the brazilian way of life to chill and be laid back. (ps I dont go here for the service)

I dig the kiwi caipirinha and the coconut drink. The chayote salad is refreshing. The Feijoda is tasty, like I remember from brazil. Hearts of Palm dish with shrimp was great too. Empanadas & Salmon entree were ok.

Keep up the good work.

I just went to Esperanto on a friend's restaurant for my birthday, and it was definitely worth the trip! They sat us promptly on our reservation, and the waitress was very attentive and quick with our orders. The food was delicious, and we were mostly drinking mojitos which were also perfect. There was a band playing great latin music, and that made the atmosphere really fun.

All in all it made for a great dinner, and now that I've been there I'm definitely heading back soon.

This place left a bad taste in my mouth before I even ate there.
It began when I requested an 8pm reservation and was rudely declined due to
their preference to "walk in's" policy.
We ask to order appetizers but they insist we need to order our entrees at the same time, and dessert as the dessert takes a while to cook. We advised the waitress, our
friend would be arriving momentarily to order. When my friend arrived, not
more than 2 minutes later, she was advised she could only order a few
things off the menu that wont take long to cook. And the most shocking of
all, if she wanted steak it would have to be cooked rare, as they dont have
time. That is the epitome of bad service. i am appalled

I use to live in the East Village and wish I still did! Esperanto was the perfect option for my friend's birthday. it was very reasonable priced and the food was great! I love Latin flavors as well as the mojitos and caipirinhas....Esperanto nails both. highly recommend Esperanto and then hit all the other bars on Avenue C for a fun night out!!!

A friend of mine and I just went there first time last weekend for a birthday dinner, and we had a such a great time that I'm sure we'll be back soon! The food we ate was delicious (we shared the chayote salad and I had a tuna steak) but on top of that although the place was busy with a lively fun crowd the service was friendly and prompt. They have live bands on the weekdays, so we may try coming back on a weekday to check that out!

Highly recommended!

Esperanto is one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The manager and waitstaff were extremely rude. Although there were many open tables, the manager insisted my party wait at the bar for over one hour. It is clear he only made us (and the numeruos patrons at the bar) wait in order to increase the bar tab. When we asked when our table would be ready, he told US we were out of line. No restaurant should treat its customers in this manner.

Esperanto is RUDE -- from the managers on down. I have never experience ruder service. Basically, they could care less if you stay or go. And don't trust them when they say it's a two hour wait. They're just trying to mess with your head. In reality, they'd rather hold a table empty for hours rather than give you the satisfication of spending money at their establishment. (There's no logic to their customer philosophy.)

Do not go. You can get the same kind of food at some other restaurant -- and at the same time be treated like a human being. Imagine that?

I went here for my weekly girls' night out. The rude woman at the door said we could not be seated until our last friend arrived even though she was running really late and told us to start w/o her. Finally after a round of drinks at the bar and several rounds of asking to be seated... we were sat, and then not 30 seconds later the same woman came over and asked if we'd mind moving to the front, where the band was setting up... we said YES we did mind, since we were there to chat. Luckily at that moment our last friend arrived and we were able to start what ended up being a delicious dinner with spotty service. We shared a bunch of apps, sandwiches, seafood, and dessert and it was all unique and tasty!

I came here on a Saturday night for my birthday. We had reservations and called to say we would be late & they said it was fine. When we arrived we were told by the rudest manager ever that we could not be seated for another 2 hrs. Finally we got seated in 20 min. Our table had be sitting empty for the entire time. As if the rudeness of the manager was not enough the waiter we had was his equal. One of my friends came late & ordered an entre the waiter told her it would take 20min. After 20 min. we wondered where her food was. The rude waiter told us the manager wouldn't allow her to eat because she would be holding the table up, but that she could eat by herself at another table. I experienced nothing but attitude all night.

I have been here several times and I"m always impressed with the quality of the food and how delicious it is. Services is great and they often have live music. Very personable experience and very reasonable prices for such quality food. Fun atmosphere as well. Not much room for large groups but a tabel of six is fine.

I met some friends here for dinner on a Friday night, and there was a line out the door! I definitely recommend making reservations. The atmosphere was great - they really capture the mood, colors, and textures of Latin America. The food was above average. We started with the tapas plate, and I found the Spanish tortilla, ceviche and chorizo to be excellent.

I ordered a mojito, which was a bit strong, and we also had a nice syrah, which I recommend.

All in all, a positive experience!

Walking back towards 1st Ave after the dinner, I couldn't help but feel like I was returning from another latitude. Warm colorful, lively atmosphere, pulse-pounding live music, sweet caiparinhas and food to rival any I've had in S. America. We had an extremely busy but cutely attentive hispanic server. When I started ordering an appetizer, she nearly jumped with excitement until she realized I was ordering something else, I asked her what it was she thought I ordered, and when she told me I switched to that (the crabcake with plantain chips) and didn't regret it. Try the pork chop or the shrimp with palm hearts. One of the most unique dining experiences I've had in the village, if not the city.
