Ratings_icons GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE

pathfindernyc

My boyfriend and i, were having a walk around when we met this restaurant. It`s a couple of months we don`t eat cuban, (since we were in Miami) that`s why we decided to get in and give it a try. We were greeted by a well mannered maitre, whom asked if we had a reservation. We were asked to wait about ten minutes and we did so. After a while he was so kind to seat us, because this place was so crowded and many people were waiting to get a table. Our waiter was very polite and with patience explained which were the best dishes of the menu. On waiter`s recommandation we ordered two appetizers: Papas Rellenas and Sandwich Cubano(really good), for main course Ropa Vieja (Deliciuos) Paella Marinera ( very tasty) and for dessert: the tres leches (out of this world). Ah i almost forgot the best mojitos ever had in NY. The service was PROMPT i drink a lot of water while i eat and my glass was never empty. Compliments to the diregent of this orchestra. I was impressed!!

It's unfortunate that I have to write a poor review about a place that I USED to like. I have been to Havana Cuba on at least 3 other occasions where I not only enjoyed the food but recommended the place to friends and family when they were in search of good spanish food. Well, this Friday night changed my enthusiastic feeling about the place. Some friends and I (party of 6) went here to have dinner to celebrate another friends b-day. We ordered drinks, appetizer, entrees AND dessert. When one friend's husband came to join us at the table he was told that there were no chairs available for him. Mind you, not only were we not finished eating our own meal, but he (the husband) was going to order food as well. Mistake one, have extra chairs available so you dont lose a paying customer. After complaining to the manager, who stating that there was nothing he could do, he made another party at a table next to us remove a seat for their extra person who came late. So not only did he not accommodate us but he made some woman get up from the table and remove her chair. Can you say EXTREMELY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE? To top off the night some woman came to our table demanding that we leave so her party can sit there. When we asked who she was and what she wanted, she stated that the manager told her that we were holding up her party from being seated because we had been there since 5pm. Mind you, we were all at work at 5pm. Apparently, the manager sent the lady to our table to do his "job" to get us to leave because we apparently over stayed our welcome. I guess we should have known this when they gave us the check before we even asked for it. Ah... Havana Cuba..here are some recommendations 1. get more chairs for unexpected paying customers 2. never make excuses because the customer is always right and 3. train your manager so he doesnt have to send other customers to do his job.

Well, at least the chicken was good.

Pros: Food and Drinks

Cons: Manager, Service and lack of professionalism

I`m here at city search to write a review because i was so impressed with this place everything was amazing. It was my first time here and i didnt know that this place was so crowded on tuesday nights, there were people waiting at the bar to be seated. I realized that they had other rooms all of them were packed. The service, the food and mojitos were the best that i ever had. At the end the maitre offered us hand rolled cigars and after dinner drinks.I was astonished when i saw that "bad" review, it`s absolutly a bluff, the person is lying, because i was seated next to her and i heard the conversation. The maitre was well mannered and very polite with the gentleman, but the only thing they wanted was to not pay for the drinks they had. About the fee for her cake " probably this person never went to a restaurant before" she doesnt know that every restaurant in the city charges for the stuff that you bring from outside, becuse if they dont do that people can bring their own food to eat at their restaurant. So people dont be fooled by cheap persons whom want everything for free. Come here and see for yourself this fun place where youngsters have a great time. I recommend this place to everybody and i`ll be back soon.

Pros: Food, service, mojitos

Cons: The door

Ratings_icons Slightly Disappointing

After both reading and hearing good reviews of this restaurant, the service and food were a bit of a letdown. Our meal started out good with the live entertainment (2 talented guys in a corner) and some delicious croquettes de pollo and great maduros. But when it was time to choose a wine, we asked for some suggestions but the waiter advised he does not like any wines from the list. What we chose was a decent wine for good value, so we were pleased, despite. He wasn't much help with the menu either, but I thought I couldn't go wrong with the Churrasco skirt steak. The steak itself was prepared well, but the Chimichurri sauce was the worst I've ever had, it was practically plain vinegar. The mixed rice and beans on the side were flavorless, as were my friend's two entrees. At $17-$25/entree, far better authentic Cuban cuisine can be found in the city.

Pros: good music, inexpensive bottles of wine

Cons: unknowledgable staff, bland food

Ratings_icons Since when do you serve appetizers & the entree at the same time?????

bnycgirl

The food could have tasted better if the service was better. The worst thing you can do to a customer is serve both the appetizer and entree at the SAME time! It's awful! I've never felt so rushed! Dinner is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. Just because the place is too small and their bookings are made with little time in between, these concerns should remain behind the scenes. I should have gotten the hint when the waiter/waitress/? (still not sure who it was) asked for our orders at once... We stated that we wanted to order appetizers throughout the course of the meal and take our time, but we weren't given the chance. To top it all off, they wanted to take the entrees back to the kitchen until we were finished with our appetizers, but who in their right mind would let them do that??? I'd rather it get cold than to send it back to the kitchen. It should've never happened in the first place! After complaining to the "manager", they offered ALL the drinks on the house!

Pros: Sangria

Cons: Service!!!!!

Ratings_icons Great Mojitos in Cute Little Cuban!

qtgurljny

I'd heard about Havana but never actually been except for finger food and drinks. Drinks were awesome. Some of the best mojitos I have had in New York. The food all looked scrumptous but, I unfortunately didn't have anything to eat. They have an outdoor seating area which is really adorable in white leather banquette seating. Great for the summer. However, this restaurant is tiny so I imagine that it gets packed early!

Ratings_icons Disappointing

weekenddiner

Having read some of the reviews for this place I decided to give it a try. When we arrived we were seated directly in front of the open door, I asked the host if we could move further into the restaurant to avoid the freezing draft that followed every person entering and was rudely told that we could either sit there or not sit at all. This immediately created a lousy vibe for both myself and the remainder of our dinner party. They were nice enough to sit us while we were waiting for our fourth person to arrive, but followed it up with a reminder every 5 minutes that we had not yet ordered food. This only added to the already bad vibe and chilly wind we were receiving. When the wine arrived the waiter did a fairly hasty wine service, which included spilling more than a few drops on both my menu and my lap. While waiting for our fourth to arrive we decided to order a few starters (after all it is listed as a tapas restaurant) and were told by the waiter that we could not order a few dishes at a time, but rather had to order all our food at once. I refused, and after some discussion with the waiter and a not too quiet or friendly discussion with the host directly behind me, they reluctantly agreed. After all this nonsense the food finally arrives. We ordered some traditional dished including the Papas Rellenas, Croquetas de Pollo, Chorizo Salteado con Mariquitas and at the recommendation of the waiter the calamari. The Papas Rellenas seemed to have been frozen and one of the two had no meat in the middle. The Chorizo was more like sliced of pepperoni with a bag of plantain chips from a convenient store thrown on the plate. The croquetas were tasty and the calamari was acceptable but not exciting. The ambiance was lack-luster, the host was rude and the service was rushed and unaccommodating. We all went for slice of pizza after we left. I would not go back again or recommend this place, there are much better Tapas in the area.

Pros: None I can think of

Cons: Bad Host, Bad Service, Bad Food

What a great place - went there last night for dinner. I had a 10:30pm reservation, but when we showed up a half hour earlier, we were seated right away. The staff was SO friendly. The atmosphere was terrific - live Cuban music! We were seated in a cozy romantic area in the back, and it was wonderful. The food is to die for. Absolutely authentic Cuban food - and the portions were very large - I couldn't finish my meal! Drinks were delicious, too - a large variety of mojitos, and not watered down at all! I will definitely come back to this place - best Cuban food I have had in NY yet!

Pros: Ambience, food, music, drinks, the works! This place is wonderful

nyckrissy

This place is a cute little Cuban restaurant. Walk in and it's pretty small, dark, and narrow. They have live bands playing sometimes. The real treat is when you walk to the back of the restaurant to their outdoor seating. It's nice if you have a large group of 10-15. They have a nice area with white canopies. Food is good, sometimes it's not as good as other times but overall recommendable. Their marinated chicken is delicous as well as their ropa veija. Affordable prices as well. Make a reservation since they're so tiny!

The sangria was one of the best I've ever had. The food was unbelievably delicious, from the appetizers all the way to the desserts. The staff was great and constantly checked on us to see if everything was well. The place itself is very romantic. The only con is that the place is a little tight. But overall, fantastic!

Pros: Great food, great service and GREAT SANGRIA!

Ratings_icons Best Cuban pork chops ever tasted!

icypchou

So I admit this place is tiny and in the summer it can be a bit stifling but you realize how small a sacrifice that is when you receive your order. I ordered the pork chops and my boyfriend got the prime beef with onions and green peppers. Our eyes continuously rolled to the back of our heads as we savored every bite. The meats were so full of flavor as if they had been marinating all day. The typical side dishes that are sometimes easy to ignore at some restaurants were also delicious. Also, the white sangria is very tasty. I can't wait to come back and try something new although the pork chops will be hard to part with ;-)

Pros: The amazingly flavorful dishes

Cons: cramped space and no air conditioning

I've been meaning to write this review for some time as I have never been disappointed by my numerous visits here. During a recent celebration for a friends birthday, our entire group, 2 of 6 visisting for the 1st time, could not extend enough praise for the food, serice and atmosphere - [the perfect tri-fecta !!]. Notable mentions must include the delicious seafood paella and savory sangrias; the exemplary service of both Renee and Giovanni - they make you feel like you have known them all your life and the authentic murals and live band. It can be genuinely felt that both staff and guests are having a great time !!

I have heard rumors of a possible expansion. My only reservation would be - that may ruin the romantic feel to this very special place. Kudos to everyone.

I discovered this returant 9 months ago during my last visit to NYC. When planing a recent trip with my family, I knew that I had to introduce them to Havana Alma de Cuba. The food is wonderful, the staff is friendly, and the sangria is definitely worth the cross country trip. This past visit we were lucky enough to be served by Fabian. We found him charming, attentive, and witty. He and the entire staff definitely made our evening.

Thank you all.

Pros: Food, service, and cocktails are outstanding.

Cons: The resturant's single bathroom can lead to some traffic outside the kitchen.

Ratings_icons Corn on the Cob: Stepped up a notch!

kisbelfz

I made a reservation for my boyfriends birthday and as expected our little table was reserved. The night I made the reservation for was the first time I had seen it; I based it all on what I read on this site. The food was great. It had the traditional Cuban Sandwich, which was sooo good! There was this corn on the cob, that had cheese and some spices...DELICIOUS! I wasn't very fond of the entree that I had ordered, but my boyfriend loved it. It was a skirt steak simmered in onions, peppers and some sauce, but I dont really like my meat smothered in sauces; it was still good though. The service was great; from willingly changing our table for us..to consistently refilling our cups of water. :) The food wasn't overpriced, but the restaurant was small. Great for a first date, or to hang out with a small group of friends. I will definitely be there again.

Pros: Great Service. Located in a great area for enterta

Cons: Not much room.

I've done dinners of two and now ten and it is always a fantastic experience. I do not know what the negative reviewer is speaking of but she should definitely go back and give it another chance. I cannot say enough great things about the service we have had at Havana this past Saturday night. Giovanny and his amazing staffs impeccable service from the start to finish made my boyfriends big 40 an unforgettable experience. I have worked in the service industry in the past and know how difficult it can be to please a big group of New Yorkers. Giovanny and his staff (our main server Renee, bartender Louis and all the other servers) were very attentive and extremely accommodating. When the ice cream cake I ordered didnt hold up in their regular freezers temperature, Giovanny immediately had a server run out and got an identical cake in 15 minutes. Everyone was blown away Of course not forgetting to mention the delicious food (esp. the Lechon), superb Sangria and beautiful yet relaxed tropical atmosphere

We were told by the hostess to make sure we were on time for our reservation, which we were, but then they kept us waiting for 15 minutes when we got there. Food was pretty good - I had the plantain encrusted red snapper. Service was almost too attentive, as if they wanted to turn the table over fast. If you want a less noisy atmosphere (they had live music), ask for a table in the back of the restaurant, which is completely separated from the front.

Came for a friend's birthday, & loved it! The food is inexpensive, good portions, Amazing staff. Had a reservation (which BTW we were late for) And weren't seated for about 15 minutes. Staff bent over backwards to apologize, Gave our party of 6 two chorizo apps (huge portions) 2 pitchers of excellent Sangria & assorted cake platter, gratis. Nearly 100 bucks worth of food, Seat me late anytime!

Meals served w/flavorful sauces, Not a dessert person, but they were wonderful, esp. tres leches cake. Seafood's well prepared, had a seafood combination (don't remember the name) shrimp, scallops, codfish, mini-lobster tails & squid w/rice, black beans & mashed plantain-$16.95. Couldn't finish it all.

Matre'D was warm, friendly (& cute,) Waiter Ivan, was fun & entertaining, happy guy. Lively presentation for the birthday cake, & for all the birthday people in the restaurant a hysterically funny shot drinking contest .

Pros: FANTASTIC STAFF!!!, Excellent food, fun, Live Music, low $

We went with a group of 10 (already had reservations) and were seated immediately, even though our entire party was not there. The appetizers were excellent, especially the tamal. The pitchers of sangria and mojitos were also tasty and reasonably priced. I had the oxtail, which requires a little disection and was fattier than much oxtail on menus, but all in all was tasty. The paella was not recommended by those in our party, however. Chicken dishes seemed to be good. We rounded out the night with a flaming shot competition. my wife and I came down from the upper east side...great ambiance, wonderful service, excellent food and the price was right..my only regret is that there is a two piece band, guitar and bongo drums, the music is good but its almost impossible to hear any conversation with your partner..better, in my opinion, to have low background music...but we will definitely be back, despite having to take 3 different subways!!

Pros: good food, good service, good ambiance

Cons: music palyers, made it too, noisey

Ratings_icons December 3, 2005-Outstanding Cuban!!!!! / June 25, 2007-It Has Lost It's Appeal In MANY Ways!!!!!

December 3, 2005: Awesome restaurant. Food was great, very generous portions and reasonably priced. Fun and friendly staff. Service was very attentive. Only negative is that the desserts could stand improvement. Look forward to returning again!

June 25, 2007: When we wrote the above review on 12/3/2005, we truly meant everything we said. That was our FIRST time there and we had been back MANY times ever since and it had replaced our former number one restaurant (Trattoria Spaghetto-which is now back to being our NUMBER ONE restaurant). What had made the place special was NOT only the food but the staff! Giovanny/ General Manager along with Luis/bartender and Sergio/waiter along with the rest of the staff made it a freindly, festive, party atmosphere and made you feel at home and part of a true "family". We were last there the weekend of Valentines Day after getting numerous BS and lying excuses as to where Giovanny was ("oh he hurt his back at the gym and will be out for a while, till when no one knows"): well finallly now after a month or more they now tell the truth that he is no longer there - who knows what really happened. Now you have a CLOWN - this "new so called manger/host" who we watched HOVER over peoples tables and bring them their checks before they ask for it because they overbooked the place and need to get you up and out the door before you expect to end your night. That would have NEVER happened on Giovanny's watch! Also Luis is NOT the permanent bartender anymore, when we were there that night he was used as a waiter! Also some rocket scientist there had the bright idea of REMOVING the bar stools so you can no longer sit town, chat with Luis and enjoy pichers or glasses of drinks and listen to the live music. There were MANY times we just went there to have drinks and hang out with the staff. NO MORE, thrill is gone! It' is now an AVERAGE Cuban restaurant! Why can't a restaurant that hires the right people just leave well enough alone!?

Pros: Food, Service-especially with Sergio as your waiter, Price

Cons: NO MORE GIOVANNY, staff seems restricted on having fun themselves, Parking

Ratings_icons Be very careful of these reviews

nealr2000

Many of the rave reviews here appear to have been made by people with a vested interest in the restaurant (e.g. family, owners, friends, etc.). It's an okay place, and worth a visit, but don't get fooled by all the "it'll blow your socks off" comments.

Ratings_icons Great Tapas! Awesome Sangria

djpaul206

Since I thought great things of the sister restaurant, Cuba, I decided to try this one for Tapas and Sangria. I found it to be better on service, better on Sangria and better on the overall experience (probably because it was not as packed). I heard that the bartender was named the best red sangria maker in the New York Times, but the white sangria was awesome. We order about every appetizer there was and enjoyed them all, especially the Ceviche. We also really enjoyed the live band. More of a friends or 2nd/3rd date spot.

Pros: Inexpensive, Sangria/Food, Service

Cons: Parking, Parking, Parking
