Well pleased with Toyota Camry

by Steve S.

Well Pleased with Toyota Camry

My experience has been very positive. I bought a 2000 Toyota Camry and have had no trouble other than normal wear and tear. If you are offended because someone at an Austin business asked you to consider filling out the Austin Chronicle survey, then you are way too sensitive. Some businesses are even running ads to get people to nominate them. Your comments about the driver ("Joker") who took you to your destination and the lack of a "shuttle" were way off base and showed a real elitist attitude. Perhaps the inner-campus shuttle on the Harvard campus might be a better fit for you than having to interact with working-class Austinites.

The Auto Depot is NOT trustworthy.

by johnq j.

I know people who have had there car fixed here and there is no way they wrote some of these reviews. Jim ASKED them to write the reviews BEFORE work was completed but work was completed way later than promised and they regreted bringing him the car in the first place. This is a very shoddy place. I am looking at his resoponse to another negative add and he accuses a person of being liable for expressing their opinion. Last I checked, this is a free country and this is a free web page to post opinions and personal experiences. Nice try man. Instead of attacking the writter, why not explain your side of the story?? Maybe there isnt a good one;-)

the only people I trust with my car

by texasdave

I found auto depot from the chronicle, decided I'd give them a shot since they were nearby also. These guys are fantastic. I've called them up just for advice and they are happy to give it. I take my car in and they've always treated me with honesty and integrity for a very reasonable price I might add. I absolutely do not trust dealerships due to past experience, and these guys are THE BEST ALTERNATIVE, in fact, they are BETTER. Go to auto depot, have a laugh while you wait, don't get scared of the mud or the looks, enjoy a real Austin style business and get yer car fixed right the first time!

Pros: very honest people, hard working, trust worthy

Cons: they aren't nextdoor to my house...

Fortunate Misfortune

by Pauline Rubben

Your review
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 So Grateful for Fortunate MisFortune & Jims Generous Good Will? - ? - Today

Jim went way, way, way above and beyond what I would expect any car repair or resale shop to do for a total stranger. I was looking for a used, reliable vehicle after wrecking my 1993, 160,000 mile Suburu Legacy Wagon, which I loved. My trusted friend John H. and several others highly recommended Jim and Auto Depot.

The first thing I noticed was that Jim didn?t sound at all like a person in the car business. Rather, he sounded more like a highly cultured smooth talkin? easy listening radio DJ?. a contradiction in other words..Turns out he was, and still is, both. GREAT guy!

The next thing I noticed was a lot of mud around the building, and a lot seeming chaos around Jim... No contradiction there. Wrecked cars & fixing wrecked cars = chaos in my book. I would trust a messy shop more then an perfectly tidy and organized one...Next thing I know, at my request, Jim is taking me all the way across town to the salvage yard to make sure my car can?t be repaired, This took about 2 hours of his time. .(.I had recently put $1600 into my car, and the wreck hadn't touched the engine.and I liked my Subee.). But nope, just as others had told me, ..it wasn?t worth fixing. Jim however, was willing to give me more for the salvage on it then either the insurance company or my mechanic had offered Next thing I know, he's showing and selling me on a good looking 92 Toyota Previa Van that will be repaired in 10 days.. the size of which I could really use, for awhile anyway. Meanwhile, he lends me a 93 clean, well running Honda Accord to use at no charge. GREAT I think, what a guy!.

Three weeks passed, and the van, which I needed to haul some things to Shreveport, still wasn?t ready due to delays on parts and repairs he had not anticipated. Fortunately, a business associate was willing to use my Accord while I used their truck for the trip. I return from the trip 3 weeks later( that's about 6 weeks with a car that didn't cost me anything, because he gave me full value on the trade- in for the Accord, because legally it was in my name) When I went to pick the van, Jim told me the labor and parts on the van had far exceeded his original estimate by about $1500 but he would still sell it to me for the price he quoted me. GREAT What a guy!

He also offered an optional 6 month warranty, and a very generous trade in price when I am ready for a smaller more efficient vehicle, and/ or will sell the van for me..knowing I was only keeping if for around 6 months. At this point, I start to feel a little guilty. Before returning the truck, I wash it, detail it, have the oil changed, and offer him and his wife free massage,(s) because my money is still tight at point of sale. Next thing I know he is offering me free advertising via his ads GREAT...What I guy!

? So for a limited time, anyone who spends $1000 or more at Auto Depot, will get a free ? hour massage. (Offer will end at my discretion, not Jims... GREAT... What a guy!

In gratitude and awesome wonder.. Pauline Rubben.

Pros: Extremely generous, trusting, fun, sincere, kind

Cons: Slower then others to deliver,,,muddy

A little unconventional but a great place

by Lorin Park

I bought my subura outback from them 8 months ago. It broke down once because of some kind of electrical problem with the starter. And then right after that something went wrong with the power steering. But both times it was in the shop, Jim gave me a lender car to drive around in. Everything was free under their year long warranty. Basically, I think it's great to find a place that is willing to work with you. If you want the kind of service where people are bending over backwards to serve your every need, then go out and buy a new car from a dealership. I wrote unconventional in the headline because the lender cars look beat up or sometimes they're real busy and Jim asks you to move some cars around for him. And that's a refreshing change from a corporate run business that is only interested in your money. Bottom line, I feel like I've been able to stretch out my money a lot further here than any other place I could take my car to.
Thanks, Jim

Pros: Honest service

Took my car elsewhere to get fixed

by sockstx

I had a new clutch put in. They should have put in a new rear main seal at the same time. Not sure if they really did or not. My car was leaking oil sooo badly, that my land lord was threatening to tow my car. But since I still owed a little money for the repair, they didnt want to hear anything from me about any possible problems they might have to fix. I took the car to another shop on the street and they found a loose screw on the motor in less than 5 minutes. They tightened it up at no charge and its been great ever since. Boo Auto Depot and thank you to their neighbor. Auto Depot took (some) of my money and ran! No customer service whatsoever:(

Cons: Only interested in the money

Come here for all repairs!

by Aerielle Rae

It may look a little shabby on the outside, but this place is a gem. My family has been going here for years. Jim has always been reliable, quick, and honest. The mechanics explain what's going on with your vehicle very clearly and show you how to look out for possible problems (so you can prevent future damage).
I'd recommend these guys for any repair and used car purchase.

Pros: Honest, Affordable, Friendly

Taking my car here

by alfonso rico

I brought my car here after Precision Tune on Lamar ripped me off. They were honest and quick and paid for the tow to there yard. They let me know what else is and could be wrong with my car. I can also apply any work done to a trade in the next 30 days with a year warranty. All in all not a bad experience. Thank you Jim.

Pros: honest

Where is my car???

by rabbitaustin

I bought a Honda from Jim back in August. It is October and I still dont have my car. The price was right because the car had been in an accident and said he would fix it for me. I realize this review may not help me get my car any faster if he knows who I am.
Jim, I just want my car! I am tired of the excuses and I am at the point where I will be pressing for my money back.

Cons: promises & excuses

Overall Good Experience

by famsam7

I was referred by a friend to the shop. When I first drove up I saw a run down looking shop with tons of beat up cars out front. It's very chaotic inside, but the staff was friendly and helpful. The owner, Jim, is a character - he offered me a good deal and kept his word with the price he quoted.

I had hail damage to my car, and he told me it would be done in about a week. It took an extra week to complete the work, but he called me to keep me updated. The work looked good, but after I got home I realized they did not fix the tail light/turn signal in the back .

I brought it back, they ordered the part, and took care of it quickly. I felt they did a good job, but it would be good to work on the appearance of the shop and the numerous mud puddles out front.

Pros: Good Work, Fixed Problem, Good Communication

Cons: Appearance of shop

Glad I waited before I wrote my review.....

by jeffytx

The owner asked me to write my review BEFORE services were compelted. SO glad I did not do that. I wonder how many people never actually go back ,after they wrote the original review, to update their experience. I try to always support local business, but sometimes you get burned. I will not return. The work was sloppy and past promised due date. I was suspicious from the begining and I should have trusted my instincts. Lesson learned.

Pros: great salesmanship

Cons: lack of delivery on promise

Excellent Service, Friendly Atmosphere

by gcollins08

Even with some delays in getting my Camry after purchase, the staff was friendly and worked with me to get everything done. They also installed a new cd player in my car as a part of the deal. Communication was excellent and Jim recognized me whenever I called. They have also been quick to fix the few small issues I've had since getting the car.

Pros: friendly atmosphere, work with you if there are issues

Cons: parking can be difficult, had some delays

A fair and honest auto repair place

by austinal

My side view mirror, driver's-side needed replacing. I called Auto Depot, Jim told me to bring the car in and they would immediately looked at it and price it. I brought it in that afternoon, they immediately came out, looked and gave me a price and said, "the plot will be here after 3 PM come back then."

I brought it in the next day, they immediately took it in and made the repair. The job was completed within 45 minutes and I was charged exactly what they quoted.

I would recommend Auto Depot to anyone.

Pros: Fast efficient reasonably priced

What a Great Place to Get Your Car Fixed!!!

by Le Blanc

The owner is a car enthusiast who knows what he is talking about. The garage is a virtual museum of antique cars under restoration. It takes a patient and knowledgable crew to make this kind of magic. I purchased a car for my son. All I can say is I got a great deal. I recommend The Auto Depot to anyone who is looking for value and great workmanship. Their warranty is awesome.....Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Pros: The Staff is knowledgable and friendly

Cons: Parking tight.

Very reliable

by Russell Glasser

I brought my car in first for some body repair, and then had my starter replaced. On each occasion, the work was done efficiently and at a good price. The owner, Jim, is very personable and goes out of his way to save you money on repair costs. The knowledgeable staff will inform you of additional problems but don't try to pressure you into getting extra work done that you don't need.

Pros: Good service, fair deals, friendly owner

Cons: A bit out of the way

best of what....???

by wiggle345

I was told my car would be ready by a certain date and I still dont have it. Jim knoew how important timely delivery was to me. He asked me for money up front. That was a big mistake to give it to him because now I see my car on the back burner for him. So far the body work looks very poor and I am worried.
I am not one to try to ruin somebody's reputation, but my experience has been very unsettling, to say the least. This is not the way to treat customers!

I was looking for a trustworthy auto shop in Austin. After researching, I found that Auto Depot won the Austin Chronicle's 'Reader's Poll Best of Austin' award for many years, so that's where I went. And I wasn't disappointed. They were fast, and straight-up about my car problem. I recommend them to anyone looking for good, honest, and knowledgeable service.

good place for the money

by jayda78745

I bought a toyota echo from jim at auto depot. I was a little freaked out about giving him most of the money for my car before driving it (he was buying it at auction that day), but he assured me that it had some hood damage from a wreck and that would be fixed. He gave me the car fax on it and let me look at pictures and I asked lots of questions. He told me my car would be ready the next week, however it took a little longer than that. It seems like they have alot going on there and that was a bit frustrating, but meanwhile they gave me a decent loaner car (no radio, but who needs that?).

I finally picked up my car and I have been driving for about a week now. I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. I love my car, I think it was money well spent. A bit time consuming but I'm really happy about my purchase overall.

Pros: cars at an affordable price, guarantee their work for a year

Cons: seems like they have alot on their plate

SLOW DOWN. Do your own research.

by Mr Hip Hop

I really wish I had done more research before buying my Toyota Truck from Jim (the owner of Auto Depot). He has great incentives and discounts (i.e. he will "pay the title and taxes on the vehicle"), especially if you can make a decision "today". The deal may seem hard to pass on, it was in my case.

My recommendation is don't buy anything right away, and do your homework. I'm sure great deals can be had with Jim, but you can and should not simply take his word for it. In hind-sight, this is the approach I should have taken when buying my car from Jim (and any other used-car dealer for that matter).
1) I would have asked Jim the history of the car and what work he put into the car.
2) Research the history of the car by looking up the VIN#. I learneded that when a buying a salvage vehicle it is worth every penny (~$10, really not that much) to know the vehicle history!!
3) I would have then made sure the vehicle history jived with what Jim told me.
4) If everything is still good, take the vehicle to a auto mechanic to inspect the car, and the quality of work and/or repair done the dealership I was buying the car from (in this case AutoDepot).

Here was my situation. I needed a car asap, and I made the mistake of researching based soley on Auto Depot being a six-time "Best of Austin" award winner. The vehiclle I bought from Jim at Auto Depot had a salvage title. After it was too late to do anything about it, I had a another auto repair shop look at it . My truck had apparently been totalled in a rear-end and front-end collision, and AutoDepot did the repair work. The mechanic at the shop quickly pointed out the bondo and additional mounting holes that they drilled in order to make my bumper appear to be straight.

Any mechanic would have noticed these problems, but I did not. If you do not know how to tell the extent of previous damage, have someone else that you trust look at it. I made a mistake, and AutoDepot was not about to point it out to me.

Pros: Jim is a good... business man

Cons: Used cars with salvage titles

I was really impressed with the reviews, but they cant all be for real. Ill tell you that my impression and my experience was far different. I do not normally write reviews, but feel I must in this case. There was a ton of "orange peel" all over the paint and wax in the creases. There were loose screws left inside my ashtray...hope my car doesnt fall apart!?!?! The place is a pig stye and the work is just sloppy. Not impressed and would not recommend.

Pros: price

Cons: everything else

Best Custome Service I've Seen in Years

by zparrie

After getting hitt by someone else, I just wanted to get my car fixed and move on. After looking around online, I found the Auto Depot, and I'm glad I did.
Not only were they able to fix my car hassle-free, but when the inevitable battles with the insurance company (and in this case even the rental car company) came up, it became clear that the staff here was on my side. They did everything they reasonably could, and I couldn't ask for more.
The biggest reason to go here? Because they care as much about the customer as they do about the bottom line. That's rare these days. Thanks Jim!

Pros: Honesty, they're on your side.

Best Service I have ever received

by dlipari

I recently had a timing belt break on my car, and went to Auto Depot on the recommendation of a friend. From my first conversation with Jim on the phone, I received excellent customer service. These guys bent over backwards to save me money and get me my car back as quickly as possible. They made sure that I thoroughly understood my options, and went the extra mile to make sure that I could afford the repairs. I got my car back less than 24 hours after dropping it off. They even stayed late to make sure that I was taken care of when I couldn't get there until a few minutes after they closed, and gave me a lift home after dropping off my car with them. They went above and beyond. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone and everyone, and any work I need done in the future will definitely be brought to them.

Pros: Friendly service, honest mechanics, super fast turn-around

Some great honest, and down right good people.

by Killian18

I just turned 18, and by now i really needed a car. I had been saving up for years for my own car, but i had come to terms with the fact that i wouldn't have near enough money till october or november. My uncle david directed me to Jim at the Auto Depot, and told me about how honest they were, and all the awards they have earned over the years for their auto repair. We saw an ad for a 95 Jeep Cherokee for only 2950, and so we asked about. The same day we test drove the car, we bought it. It drives great, looks great, and i can't tell you how happy this made me. Im young, and naive, and i needed some good people who wouldn't take advantage of that. Jim and his employees were nothing but upfront and honest, and made sure that i knew they weren't there to screw me over. These are some great people, and i really whole-heartedly reccomend them. Thanks JIM!

Pros: Honest, Loyal, Friendly, Want to make YOU happy.

by scaper

Jim and the folks at Auto Depot did me right. When I needed a durable car with great mileage, Jim found me a fine Corolla. I bought it with the 30 day guarantee that I could get full trade-in value for my money if I wasn't satisfied. I was satisfied, but what I really wanted was a Matrix. They found one for me and gave me full value for the Corolla. I love everything about this car 6 mos later! They were willing to fix any little problem that came up free of charge, just as they had said. Sometimes it took more of my time than I had counted on, but I would definitely use them again and have happily recommended them to friends.

Pros: They bent over backwards in customer service

Cons: Can be time consuming

Excellent Shop!

by ElizabethRae

I took my older vehicle in because of a grinding problem, as well as some basic maintenance. Ron and Paul took great care of me - because it was an older vehicle, they knew I did not want to do any crazy repairs, so they worked to fix smaller components of my compressor rather than replacing it. They ran into problems with the smaller components (because of a different compressor that had been installed previously) and worked extra to try and make it happen. Once we realized that the compressor did in fact need replacement, they split the labor cost with me and got the smaller components credited.

Every step along the way, Paul and Ron kept me informed, and when I picked up the vehicle, they insisted that I bring it back before I move out of town (and do an extended drive) in a few weeks so that they can check the engine and all my belts, fluids, etc for free.

I went here because of a recommendation from a friend, and they were great!

by loaded96

These reviews are a joke. It must be the owner writting them to hype their page. This place is most choatic, disorganized place I have ever seen. Nothing went smoothly or promised as soon as I was asked to write a review. Good thing I chose to wait until AFTER work was completed. I chose them because of the shuttle service offered on the web site. Shuttle!?!?! It is some stupid guy named Joker in a beat up car who drove me to work. I couldnt believe the misrepresentation. I expected a shuttle, not be drowned in useless conversation with an idiot. And the check engine light was on the whole time and it drove like junk. They even tried to sell me that car!

Pros: misrepresentation

Cons: liars

My cute little car

by Martinihomes

I purchased a car from Auto Depot in early June. It had been damaged from a hail storm, so the windows needed to be replaced and there are alot of dents on the body. When I purchased the car, I made an agreement with Jim that I would be back to pick it up in two weeks, so he could replace the windows and complete some other needed work.
When I came by to pick the car up, it was not yet ready. Jim made every effort to work with me. He gave me a loaner to use until mine was ready.
I had an overheating problem with it and took it back; they worked on it right away and the problem appeared to be fixed. It is overheating again, so I will need to take it back in, and still expect great service!
I am very happy with my car and the service offered so far.

Update: I took the car back in, and once again, Auto Depot gave me super service. The car is still under warranty so they took care of the problem (faulty water pump) and did some additional work as a preventative measure. Everyone there was helpful and they definitely took care of the problem.

Yet another update: These guys are TERRIFIC. I had another overheat problem and I took the car back in. Turns out one of the cooling fans stopped working. They fixed that same day and gave me a ride to the rental car place so I could take of things during the day. Now my car is running fine and it is due to their good work, and their dynamite warranty. No charge for these repairs and they did it all with a smile.

Pros: Good service

Auto Depot Lives up to the hype

by Northeast78723

My experience with Auto Depot has been very positive. I was forced into buying a used car with little time to shop due to a new job opportunity. My trusty old Bonneville died a sudden death and I had no real opportunity to shop around. Ended up buying a clean high mileage 2000 Toyota Camry and am well satisfied so far. Jim and Mark fixed it up, new timing belt, water pump, etc. and got it in good running shape. Price was below blue book value by $500. Best experience I have had buying a used car. Haven't had to test the one year/12,000 mile warranty so I can't comment on that aspect. Five months later I am still pleased with the car and have recommended them to several people. Do your research, shop around, know what to ask and you won't be disappointed with these guys. I'm not surprised they have won the Austin Chronicle award time after time. We need to support businesses that stand behind their promises and give good customer service because they are few and far between.

Pros: Highly recommended

Excellent Customer Service

by Altair

I took my car in to get the engine service light checked out. They ran it through a battery of tests and drove it around for half an hour and concluded it was an error as far as they could tell, but they said they'd fix it right up if it came on again. Sure enough, it came back on so I took it back. Jim, the owner, personally took a thorough look at the car and found the problem. He offered to repair it for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged (I checked; his price was 60% of the dealer price!!!). On top of that, he also took care of a brake light that was out for just the cost of the light ($2). What a deal!

Needless to say, I'll be returning any time I have car trouble again. Thanks Jim and all the folks at the Auto Depot!

Pros: Great work - they strive for customer satisfaction

Great used car dealer

by Ben1991

At the Auto Depot, there were friendly people willing to help me find the car i was looking for. We gave them a price range and they gave me a really good deal on a '96 Infiniti. It came out to a total of 5K, and that included all the taxes and everything. It also included a new windshield and warranties. The car came with a nice BOSE sound system as well. Since they sell used cars you are able to find cars in good condition that they've had brought in because of hail damage. This is our second car that we've bought from the Auto Depot and we're very happy with both of them. It's a great place to get fairly priced good condition vehicles. The owner, Jim, is a really friendly guy to and he'll work with you to get you a car you'll really like for the price you want. You may not get exactly the car you want, but that's simply because all the cars they have are used and so they come in at random times. Even so, when you do find a car you like (which you will, because their selection is constantly changing), Jim will hold the car for you until you decide to buy it (within reason of course). All in all it's a good place to look for your first car, like mine, or your fiftieth car.

Pros: Nice people, affordable priced cars

Great deal on a car

by Wooody

Six months ago I was looking for a Lexus SC400 when my Google search ended up at The Auto Depot. While I live in San Jose, my Applied Materials job takes me to Austin often. I saw one on The Auto Depot's site, and called Jim Ernst. He described the car to me to the point where the following Tuesday I stopped by to look at it. It scared me how much I liked the car, but hired an independent person to write a report on it. He told me that if I decided not to buy the car, he would for his daughter - everything Jim told me about on it, had been done.

Now, six months - and 8,000 miles - later, it is running like a watch and has needed nothing but a couple of oil changes. I am 43, and have been deluded many times by people trying to sell me a car. Jim Ernst is the only person who shot it straight to me, and I love my car - and The Auto Depot.

They deserve every five star rating they get, and none lower than that. Thanks

Pros: nice used cars, nice work

Cons: none that I could see

A Honest Car Dealer-Absolutely

by wrex

I have purchased 4 cars in the past four years from Jim at Auto Depot. My family and I have had two Honda Accords, a Camray, and a Lexus purchased and serviced at Auto Depot. I have had hail damage repaired there and an assortment of repairs, most of which were covered by Jim's warranty. Every car was priced at less than market value. I am very satisfied with the quality of cars and service at Auto Depot.

Pros: Best deal with warranty on used Honda and Toyota

Cons: The place is busy

Great Service

by mjhenderson

I had a transmission go out on our car. I could not afford the work. Not only did they repair it for over 1,000 less than other repair shops they worked with me on payments. Did an excellent job. Will return for sure!

Pros: Willing to work with you

Cons: None

Quality Service For Unbeatable Prices!

by Fiala

We brought our BMW in for service after being quoted an arm, leg, and first born to get a coolant leak fixed. Jim and his crew took great care and got the job done for LESS than HALF of what BMW wanted! Prompt, honest, fair, and over all - just a great experience!

We're sold - no matter any bad review of someone who claims to have been lied to!

Pros: Honesty, Integrity, Goes Out Of Their Way To Help!!!

Cons: Pave The Drive way :)

great place to get a good used car

by organical

we bought a car from Jim for my son and he took it out the same day and blew it up, and Jim rebuilt the motor for half price and as far as i know that car is still going today years after he did the work. He's a square shooter and he
takes care of his customers.

Most Excellent!!!

by JillianSmythe

I'd had a quote of $1500.00 to fix my Honda's A/C, but saw Auto Depot's ad in the Chronicle. Hey what could it hurt to get an estimate?

Well... I ended up paying only $231.69 to get my freeze back at The Auto Depot. There will be no other shop for me now, so what if I live central and Auto Depot is a bit North. IT'S WORTH IT!!

Thanks, Jim and guys. You guys rock!

Pros: Attitude, Service, Helpful

Cons: none

Highly Recommendation

by MiguelS

Even when the brakes part came back wrong from the parts place and I was in a hurry to get to work or have my crabby boss be mad at me again, the Auto Depot owner drove to the parts place himself and got the right pads. You probably don't see that every day.

I will be back, cause I have the fender bender to get fixed and they do that too, for a resonable price. Actually a great price.

Pros: Nice guys

Cons: I did not see any

False advertising

by toad2001

Can you believe they asked me fill out a "best of" ballot before work was completed?!?! They also asked me to pay up front. I recently brought my car there based on all the reviews and the chronicle ad. These are two big no no's that my dad always taught me to be very leary of. I wonder how many review writers are sorry they wrote the review after they actually got their car back! I know I'm just glad I didn't fall for it.

Pros: can't think of one

Cons: fraud, dirty, chaotic

What a total Lemon. Stay away

by jennytulip72

I really wanted to like this place too because of all the reviews. However, I regret completely ever trusting this place. My car was ready way past the promised ready date. There were still a long list of items that needed a second visit to take care of. Loaner car? There was never a loaner car for me except for one that was disgusting with no A/C. Actually, I think it was the same car car they use for the "free shuttle!" What really rubbed me the wrong way was the owner asking me to pay for some of the work upfront, before it had been completed! It was a total mistake taking my car there and I will never go back.

Pros: absolutely none

Cons: lies, lies and more lies
