Limelight Karaoke sceduled an "all ages night" at 7 p.m. during school vacation and made the kids leave at 9 p.m. because the emcee had to go to another job. The manager said he had no one else to work. The kids paid 10.00 for two hours.

Glad some old college friends suggested we check out this spot while in town. It was a really unique venue with people of all backgrounds, ages and musical tastes. Admittedly we were too timid to perform ourselves, but there was no shortage of people happy to sing their hearts out. We had endless laughs that night and got a taste for what what life must be like for Simon Cowell - minus the multi-million$ contract!

this is a memorable spot. went for my niece's birthday years ago and couldn't imagine it would be such a scene at night, but when a friend had a bachelorette party here it was a riot. we got a private studio room and sang all night. actually after some liquid courage we did make it out on the stage too.

i'd read up on this place before coming, mostly good reviews but a couple not-so-great. i'm glad we decided to try it anyway - had a great time. rented a private studio - glad we did it in advance b/c we were there on a sat. and it was packed. probably couldn't have gotten a studio otherwise. well worth it - were able to do that and hang out in stage for a bit. good selection of beer, so that made us happy. ended up staying until close to closing time - would definitely return. fun way to spend a night!

Pros: great karaoke, crowd

Cons: gets really crowded, need reservation

it's more expensive than other places I know but it's probably because they are right off the common. the space is really nice and the show in the stage is lots of fun. i haven't tried a private room yet but the plan is to get a group of friends and check that out soon.

Go to the studio room with a group of friends for the best time. The club is fun but the wait is too long. also if you call before for a room they give you free cover charge. Best to take the t because parking is impossible. My favorite karaoke spot in Boston. If you like singing you need to check it out.

I love to sing and watch singers but this place is very cheap and the people not very friendly. Prices to high. Never again. There were 3 couples and everyone agreed a waste of time.

Two maid-of-honor friends suggested Limelite Studios to me but I still hesitated because I hadn't been before. I'm really glad we booked here because everyone had a great time even though it was a tough group to please. The bride-to-be got a tad crazy on stage but the place was filled with other bachelorette parties so it was very easy to let loose.

Pros: unique

At first I didn't like the idea of paying a cover to sing kareoke since the places I've gone always were free. After going I see why there is a charge. Its the best kareoke I've seen: really nice facility right off the Common and lots of bells and whistles on the system like recording and touchscreens. I had a lot of fun and have been back a few times. I recommend trying a studio room or doing the club part when the band is playing.

Pros: live band kareoke, kareoke rooms

Several of my friends love karaoke so we booked a room here. It's a little pricy since in the private rooms you pay per person/per hour so keep an eye on the time. The drinks aren't too expensive, and the music list is pretty good. The main room gets crowded quickly, but you can see some talented people and some spectacularly untalented ones as well. It's a fun night out.

limlites one of my favorite places but i find the weekend crowd at Limelite a little old. there are bachelorette parties and office stuff and not many college students fri-sat. i ended up there on a thu last week and found out that its college night. it's quieter than the weekend but given that i got in free (cuz of my student id) totally worth it. i see emerson and suffolk ppl there but were trying to spread word to other schools. there arent many under 21 places so its a real find. of course with kareoke cant go wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

personally, i don't love karaoke but my best friend does and he took us to limelight this past weekend. we had a BLAST! they have tons of songs and we rented a private studio room. i read ddpaek's review and totally disagree...the bartender made sure i completely understood the contract before i signed and was really helpful with answering my questions. they charge you for the amount of time you're in the room - it's that simple. nothing unreasonable about that at all! you can also rent their portable karaoke systems for private parties and we're thinking of doing it for a house party we're hosting next month...the price is really reasonable and you get the same experience that you have in the studios in your own home!! all in all, i would definitely go back to limelight - i thought the staff was friendly, the audience in the stage area was really fun and the emcee did a great job including everyone and giving them a chance to sing. i think the cover charge is a small price to pay for how much fun we ended up having, and i will definitely go back!! i have to host a bachelorette party this summer and i will be taking the girls to LIMELIGHT!!!

Pros: Best karaoke in Boston

Cons: need to make a reservation!

The $5 cover is equivalent to what most karaoke bars charge at the door. But, the drinks are enormously expensive. Their "bar" isn't really a bar either. It's a tiny little counter where 2-3 employees run around behind the counter serving drinks and doing transactions at the same time. In fact, it resembles more like a bowling alley cash register counter. While you're waiting for your next drink, you definitely miss out on your opportunity to catch other people sing or even your chance to sing because you can't see the stage!

Don't even think about reserving a studio. They have 3-4 rooms all varying in size but the issue here is their pricing. Their website claims that they charge $10 per person per hour. Unfortunately, you have to click some links to open up a PDF that details their pricing structure written in fine print. For instance, a group discount is only available on Fridays, which is not listed on their main website. You have to open the PDF to read their Studio Rental Agreement. What's more? They charge in increments of every half hour multiplied by the total number of people you reserved for. Yeah, it's confusing right? You go read it yourself and see if it makes any sense. When do you ever organize a party to have everyone show up all at the same time? Never. This Studio reservation only works if you all showed up together at the same time. Again, none of this is explicitly outlined on their website; only on their agreement policy.

Their song lists are shown on touch-screen monitors. And no, it's not like working your iPhone because these monitors will drive you crazy trying to look for your song. What's more? LimeLight seems to not have most of the songs that other bars have.

LimeLight markets heavily on how so many celebrities came and had fun. I'm not a celebrity and neither are you. Save your money and go to an average karaoke bar where you pay a lot less for your drinks and have equal chance of singing.

it's a riot. i've been a bunch of times and it's always a different scene though. the first time i went for my cousin's bachlorete and even though we all didn't know each other well we were like best friends by the end of the night. kareoke was a great icebreaker. the next time was a week day and it was much more a college group so a bit young for me. then my favorite time was getting a room with some of my office mates. we got our boss to sing livin la vida loca. i think it was the funniest thing i ever saw!

I got the crew together for a friend's 30th and the naysayers who said karaoke wasn't their thang, ended up with their foot ..uh the mic... in their mouth. It was really a riot! People loved it across the board and our group was a mix of hipsters (not me) and those who don't rage like this too often (me).

So the point of a review is to share the wisdom, so some thoughts on the experience -

1) The room is a must. We did the lounge-y area too but the wait to sing was forever. I think people got more into it anyway without strangers witnessing the insanity.

2) Food is limited. This is NOT a dinner place. Those in our group who skipped the pre-party dinner assumed they could order real food at the bar. Unless chicken fingers are dinner to you, don't plan on more than snacks. We did get a cake and it was good but maybe i was too trashed to notice otherwise.

3) Another reviewer mentioned lines at the bar and yes it was mobbed which was annoying (although I pretty much expect that if a place is worth going to). This is one other reason to do the studio room - the waitress comes to you. Room service = happy me! uninterrupted karaoke - now you're talking.

4) Songs - anyone who goes to kareoke wants to know about songs THEIR song. Fair to say limelite has it, they have tons. Even better, there is no need to try to look through a song book because remembering the alphabet in a drunken state is not easy. It's all fancy schmancey touchscreen so you can just click on a singer and the tracks come up.

5) Price. It isn't crazy by any means ($10 cover is pretty standard for entertainemtn) but the rooms do get expensive espcially when you meant to sing for 2 hours and accidentally stayed for 3.5! Worth it though. I

I would recommend.

Pros: songs, lots of characters in the mix

Cons: some lady singing wind beneath my wings???

This place is a complete disaster. There was ONE bartender on a Saturday night! The lines were ridiculous. I got 3 beers and they were all different prices. The DJ sucked and kept putting the SAME people on stage and these guys were wasted and swearing. They were also throwing the microphones around, but she STILL kept letting them go up there. Our group was there for a party, we had a cake. I was told the cake was 45 bucks. When I went to pay for it, the RUDE manager told me the cake was 65. 65 dollars for a cake that looked like my 7 year old nephew made it. When I emailed the contact that I had been working with to reserve tables for the party the next day, she told me I should not have been charged 65 bucks. But I have not heard back from her since...well over a week ago. We will NEVER go back there. 10 dollar admission too, to wait in line forever for a drink and watch the same idiots fall off the stage. NO THANKS!

The comedy show on Sunday really was horrid. We went 2 weeks in a row and second week we all just left halfway thru. Never again.

Im not a karaoke fan by any stretch of the imagination but figured I'd be a good sport since it was for a friends birthday. Our party of 12 went in the "studio" at 9pm and must have managed to time travel because about a few too many rounds and what seemed like an hr. later we were getting kicked out. It was apparently time to close, yep 1am. We were a bit in shock and bummed about all the $$ we somehow blew though but once our hang-over wore off we could joke about how we somehow sang or should i say ROCKED OUT for 4 hours straight!

Limelight is the best karaoke club in Boston, hands down. They have both private "japanese-style" karaoke boxes that can be rented by the hour (perfect for those with a bit of stage fright) and a stage in a bar atmosphere where patrons can sit down and order drinks and snacks while alternately serving as both audience and performer. I was surprised to find that everyone there was having a good time - very few if any of those awkward too-afraid-to-sing or even dance along types. The pricing is fair and the emcee is great, plus the staff is very friendly and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this place for a party or just a night out on the town!

I went here a few times to sing, which was back in 2006, which wasn't bad, but they didn't have a big selection of songs at all. I also went to record a cd, but you can't control your sound yourself at all, and the way it comes out - even if you think you're the greatest singer - after a few drinks, forget it!!! You'll listen, and it's horrible and you pay over $100 for the damn thing!!! I'd rather stay home and sing on my computer. It's cheaper and I get to sing and record whatever and however many times I want!!

Even though my girlfriend dragged me in, I did up having fun, as did everyone there it seemed. I've never seen such a diverse mix at a Boston night spot: bachelorettes, college students, club-types and plenty of thirty-something professionals like myself. The space is really nice and the karaoke host was fantastic. Although we don't generally frequent places with a cover; $10 seemed more than reasonable for a night of entertainment. Two warnings though: they do not carry Sam Adams, which might possibly be breaking a MA law or two, also latecomers to our party didn't get seats.

I've visited Limelight for two birthday celebrations which were both fun. I thought it would be a good spot for a corporate party but for some reason could not find any reviews on here or yelp for that type of event. They sent me a really extensive list of businesses that had booked (Mayor Menino had his holiday party at a karaoke place?), but I wanted some first hand feedback - so here I go. To start with areas for improvement, I did have trouble reaching a live person and when I did get information thought the pricing was on the high end. However, the event was a huge success which is why I am writing this recommendation. We had 50 people in the "Stage" with the highest level of appetizer buffet and open bar. People I never would have imagined getting up and singing actually did. The karaoke was a great icebreaker and got people having lots of fun. Although I didn't get up there myself, watching my colleagues rock out was hilarious. The event got rave reviews across the board and two weeks later, people are still talking about it.

Went here for a 30th birthday party and had nothing but problems from the minute we walked in. We reserved the large room by the stage and after we got settled we tried to sing - but of the three microphones, 2 didn't work at all and the other kept cutting in and out plus if you moved the monitor in the middle of the room to choose a song it would lose power. Staff came in 3 times to fix it but never got it quite right and we were stuck with 1 barely working microphone and a monitor that we had to baby all night. Also the set up in this room is pretty bad because if you face the TV to read the words when you sing you have to have your back to the rest of the people in the room. Kinda hard to get in to it when you can't see anyone else.

The worst part though was the manager's reaction when we tried to tell her about all the problems we had - despite her personally coming in to fix the technical issues she kept telling us that it wasn't a big deal and we should have moved if we didn't like it. When we asked for a refund for the time the equipment didn't work she started saying that we were already getting an hour free (we used their buy 2 hours, get 1 free promotion). Eventually after 30+ minutes of negotiations she ended up giving us 1/2 hour off our bill but only after saying she "never wanted to see us or our friends in there again". Then she literally wouldn't let us leave until we left a cash tip for the waitress (which we were going to do anyways) - she actually stood over us until we collected money from everyone in our party for a tip!

Besides all that there was no one else in the club (maybe 10 people around the main stage) and the atmosphere was pretty stale (on a Sat. night).

There's better karoke places around.

ps - there is a reason they give away the free shots of "sake" (if you give them your email address)... its awful! don't bother with any drinks actually, they only serve well drinks and they're pretty watered down

Pros: large song selection, lots of private rooms

Cons: equipment didn't work, room set up is bad, drinks are watered down, management is bad

.

I'm a pretty easy-going guy and have never wasted the energy writing an online review no matter how good or bad the experience. I'm taking an Oprah moment to share my story with the masses because the girlfriend was giving me sh-t about about what she read on here. Luckily I figured with all the awards and whatnot, this place was legit and we went ahead with plans to make complete fools of ourselves...which we most certainly did! We had a blast and didn't have any issues with the waitresses or emcee. Everyone seemed extremely friendly, which makes me think Susie Q might not have been on her best behavior. I mean if having young people and empty beer bottles scares you away from a nightspot, it's possible Boston is not the town for you. Perhaps I'm ignorant of the kareoke scene - admittedly I don't exactly make the rounds HOWEVER in our party of 20+ there were some "experienced" kareoke singers and I know the consensus was limelight is the biggest, hippest, most high tech kareoke set-up we'd seen.

Pros: lots of 80s jams, lots of bachelorettes

Cons: no beer on draft

.

The staff was really unfriendly. The DJ gave me a really horriable attitude and ignored a question I had. Besides this the DJ was really bad, constantly looking at his own reflection, and slurring his words. The place was really dirty. The floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months, and the tables were littered with beer bottles; causeing a hazard if there was a fight. Alcohol and fighting can sometimes go together, and buisness's should take percausions with this. The equipment was faulty and not working. The drinks were overpriced and the cover was too much for what they had going on in the club. The website was misleading giving information of a bigger space with a varity of drinks to choose from. In reality the place was small and they didn't even have a full bar. The only good thing about the place was that it had a good varity of songs, which is where the one star comes into play. The crowd was young with more college age rich drunk kids, not as diverse as I wanted, but it was an experience. One that I would never do again, and would advise people to save there money and go to a place thats cleaner with nicer staff, and equipment that actually works.

I'm in three weddings this summer, and was nervous about making the decision for the bachelorette party. A few online searches brought me to Limelite's site and I decided to take a risk (I hadn't been before and the other bridesmaids hadn't either). It was the best time, so I'd highly recommend for a memorable girls night out. I think the private room is worth paying more because it's more fun to rock out when you don't have strangers watching. We had so much fun I told the maid of honors at the other weddings I'm in because I want an excuse to go back!

I've been in Boston for 3 years and felt like I had done everything worth doing. However I just visited limelight club on the recommendation of a friend and was shocked I hadn't come across it earlier. So if you like karaoke - it's an absolute must, but even if you are like me and can take singing only in small doses, I think it's definitely worth a visit. I've been to karaoke many times before, but I found this experience different because it was 'japanese' style karaoke. We had a room to ourselves which was awesome. Strangers singing badly = annoying... your friends singing badly = hilarious!

limelight got me into the studios, which i guess is big in ny, but never saw here. i do the club once in awhile but now that there is the option to sing with a cover band, that is my favorite. i'd highly recommend especially for a special event like a birthday. we told the host it was my friends 25th and they got her on stage and made a big deal and gave her cake too!

Pros: live band, rooms

I went there this past Sat night with my boyfriend and I sang a couple of songs. It was so much fun. I got to really sing, not just goof off. The crowd is nice and loud. The hosts are great and you got to sing as many times you possibly can! I'll back again. Definite plus for Limelight!

Pros: Lots of songs, crowd, price

Cons: Too bad it closes at 1AM

I can't be the only one who has always secretly fantasized abt being a rock star... so I need to spread the word about this 'live band' kareoke. I pretty much stumbled upon it last week (maybe its every wk? dunno). Instead of singing over the kareoke music, you get to sing with a full cover band. The lights were blinding and with music blaring and these guys rockin out behind me I got such a rush. Very cool ! I'll be back for sure.

Pros: "uniqueness"

I've been a fan of Limelight since my first visit about 1.5 yrs. ago now. Each time I've gone in since then - the place has noticeably improved. The song library has grown (every song you could ever want to sing), the food and drink menu has expanded, the venue has already gotten a facelift (new stage, new floors, new bar etc). The staff, who have always been friendly, now actually seem to know what they are doing - and even better - actually perform periodically throughout the night. I'm also a fan of new events that are being offered - from live band karaoke to "movieoke". So, for those who may not have checked in this place in awhile - I'd really recommend stopping in again.

Cons: parking is tough

I went to Limelight with a group of friends this weekend and had a blast. I was a little put off by the host at the door who grilled me about my "reservation" for some reason, but once i got beyond that point, it was pure fun. EVERYONE in my group did karaoke, which I was not expecting, but the place makes getting up there are singing contagious. Highly recommend.

A message to all the maid of honors out there - this is a great place for a memorable bachelorette. I've been a bridesmaid more times than I care to admit and was having trouble coming up with ideas this time around. A colleague recommended a "karaoke box" and although I was nervous to do something different - it was really a hit. We checked out the club as well, but preferred the private room (no need to have witnesses!) I'd advise making a reservation because we assumed we could walk-in and had to wait about 30 min. for the room.

I really struggled to think of a place that would be fun, festive, unique but a guaranteed good time for a birthday celebration. Given that the invite list was composed mostly of people in their late 20s, Lansdowne and the Ally wouldn't be the right scene. Last year we did Kings, but the upscale bowling thing is feeling pretty old by now. After googling like crazy I came across this place, which turned out to be perfect for us. Since I was lucky, I thought by posting this, I could make someone else's life a little easier as party planning is definitely very stressful. I'd recommend doing a private room ("studio") over the club, because it's really crowded in the stage area and can take awhile to get your song request up.

my friends and i love the limelight but totally hate that there's a cover charge. anyway i'm happy that they finally are helping us poor college kids out. :) now with a student id, we get in FREEE and rooms are cheaper on thurs nights. i wanna get word out to other schools (shocking for boston, but it is ALL AGES by the way) who want to karaoke with us regulars on thursdays. fyi - definitely an older crowd on the weekends!

Pros: tons of new songs, all ages, across the street!

We went to limelight for my birthday. The atmosphere and karaoke were great. But the service was horrific. The DJ was trying to let newer people go first, which is really nice, only he was doing a terrible job and letting the same singers go again and again. The worst part about limelight is the bar. It costs 8 dollars for a rum and coke. The rum comes out of a plastic bottle, and the coke... well it isn't coke it's "polar cola." On top of that, the drinks were incredibly weak. When I nicely told the host that we had a great time but I had that one complaint, he informed me that he was just a host and made 10 dollars an hour and couldn't do anything about it.

I saw this place written up on the cover of the herald and the globe... so I decided this couldn't be your typical dive karaoke bar. I decided to try it out for a birthday party for ~30 ppl. We started out in a private room. That was a huge hit. I'm a singer, so I knew I'd love it, but all my friends totally rocked out, too. The studio rates are pricey... so after 2.5 hours (we planned to do only 1 - definitely check your watch - it's a time warp in there!) we went out to the club area. That was a cool scene, but really crowded and since we got there late - there was a huge waiting list for songs. That was the great part of the studio room, we could hog the mic for hours on end!

good times never seemed so good SO GOOD SOOO GOOOOD! Ok, so this song is the perfect karaoke crowd pleaser and I'm proud to say I did an exceptional rendition over at Limelight Stage. It was my first visit to the place - and I'm writing in to citysearch (another first) because I thought it was an awesome time. In Boston, there aren't that many night spots I don't feel over-the-hill as a thirty-something, but despite the fact that LL is all-ages - there was a little bit of everything. Seriously - EVERYTHING - from a group of 20+ people dressed up as Santa belting out Mariah's 'All I want for Christmas' to some cutie bachelorettes screaming 'I will survive.' Vocal talent is iffy - but that's not what karaoke is about anyway. People here definitely are out to have a good time.

I read a Boston Globe cover story about Limelight last week. (I guess with that kind of exposure, this place won't be 'hidden' much longer.) I was concerned that as a 30-something I'd be too old the hip new 'it' place. The Globe article had lots of photos featuring a very young and very attractive crowd. Yet, the same article mentioned Mayor Menino hosted his holiday party at Limelight - so I decided to try it. I'm so glad I did! I can see why this place is getting press attention there were all types of people, a broad range of ages and *everyone* seemed to be having an outrageously fun time!

How did my boyfriend know this would be the perfect place to celebrate my 30th??! I guess I'm guilty of a little too much shower singing. ha! Anyway- the party was a total suprise and the venue was too. All I knew of Limelight was from a friend's experience at a corporate function there (her officemates are not letting her forget her version of 'Crazy'). I had no idea there was karaoke EVERY weekend. It's a blast! I'd highly recommend it as a memorable way to celebrate a special ocassion (lots of b-days and bachelorettes the night I went).

This place is totally a hidden treasure! I had never even heard of it, until I came in with 10 friends for a bachelorette. I was thinking a night a night of karaoke couldn't be that fun - but OMG we had a BLAST! We were in one of those private rooms like in 'Lost in Translation'. Let's just say it's a good thing the public couldn't see us. After a few rounds of sake shots, we were singing and dancing like maniacs. It was someone's dumb idea for us to buy a DVD of it all - so I'm scared to think when that might resurface. In any case, I have to give this place a thumbs-up because it is somewhat random, but hands-down the funnest time I've had in Boston!

I can't believe there is a karaoke place in the U.S. that puts Japanese boxes to shame. There are only English songs (they told me maybe they add others soon), but it is still the best system I've seen. Everything is digital and it is neat that you can record.

This place is great. I took some friends from NYC to Limelight over July 4th weekend to make a DVD and even they said this place was a step above karaoke places in New York.

FYI-You should make reservations for the private rooms.

This place is really fun! I stopped in with a bunch of friends not knowing what to expect. to be honest, we just wanted to get out of the cold. Everyone inside was having so much fun and it became contagious. I don't like to sing myself, but my friends who are a little more outgoing LOVED being on stage. I didn't really get up there, but just hanging back watching what was going on was a great way to unwind. Some of the guys up there were hilarious! I gotta plan a party there. My other friends will love it.

Wow! I went to Limelight for the first time last night and had such a great time. I sang with my pals in a private room and then even took to the main stage! I am so glad there is something fun and interactive to do in Boston- you can only see so many movies to fill the wintertime. This place would be good for a fun date night or to take a group for a party. Be sure to try one of the house drinks with the neon icecubes- too cool.
