Moran's is a destination restaurant offering traditional and contemporary American fare. With four distinct dining rooms, a classic cherry wood bar and a sidewalk cafe, Moran's makes all of our visitors comfortable - whether they're a party of two or two hundred. Our landmark building dates to the early 1800s, when the surrounding neighborhood was bustling with tall ships and longshoremen. Our handcrafted bar survived prohibition, and our wainscoted walls and tin ceilings reflect a custom of comfort and quality. Today's resturant has been owned and operated by the same family for three generations. Join us for your next meal or make us part of your next special event.

In Short
Moran's is a traditionally styled Old-World Irish tavern, located in a circa 1834 building decorated in dark wood, with tin ceilings, fireplaces and four dining rooms. The kitchen sticks to classics: steamed clams, raw oysters, boiled lobsters, porterhouse steaks, rack of lamb in red wine sauce and shrimp scampi. There is also a choice of pastas, including linguine Moran, with clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops in a garlic and white wine sauce.

The corned beef sandwich I had was a bit pricey, but solid. The fries were great too. Drinks were refreshed immediately, and service was excellent. A good place for a business meeting-- there's plenty of seating, it's somewhat upscale, and there is minimal risk of offending anyone.

Very nice and unique decor.

Good seafood. The accompanying sauces and little sides stood out as much as the fish itself.

Will not be an inexpensive dinner to take your time and enjoy yourself

I am not reviewing the actual restaurant as much as a particular dish. If you go to The Moran?s, I highly recommend the jumbo shrimp with a zesty cocktail sauce. The House salad , was this good! One of the best meals I have had in New York. The only drawback - just slightly too salty. That's pretty salty because I add salt to EVERYTHING. The shrimps are also cooked so perfectly. In addition, their drinks were perfect too.I would recommend to anyone.

Ratings_icons Best Place for Bat Mitzvah

We had our daughter's Bat Mitzvah here and it couldn't have gone any better. Service was great, food was great, atmosphere was wonderful and staff was so helpful and friendly. I've had many friends that attended the Bat Mitzvah come back for dinner with and without us. They loved it.

Last night my dinner at Moran's was extrodinary. I had the Filet Mignon cooked exactlly to the tempature I specificed which came with mashed potatoes that tasted homemade. My boyfriend ordered the Surf and Turf which I tried. The lobster was incredible, nothing I have ever experienced in New York City, usually lobster only tastes good to me when I'm up in Maine. After dinner we ordered desert and then he proposed to me! It was the best place to have been proposed to. The scene at Moran's is extremlly romantic with dim lighting, fireplaces, waterford crystals, brick, wood and the christmas decorations were spectacular. Moran's has a very comfortable, warm, welcoming and romantic setting with wonderful food and excellent service. I can not wait to return.

I recently dined with a group of six at Moran's in Chelsea -- we had an excellent experience! We were seated at a back table near the fireplace and Christmas tree - very cozy atmosphere! The waiter was prompt (but then a little vacant once the restaurant filled up) and drinks were served quickly. We all ordered different food - sole stuffed with lobster, strip steak, seafood linguine, surf & turf -- everything was delicious! I was disappointed the restaurant was out of creamed spinach that night (and it was early) - as it's my favorite. Prices were on target, most entrees were in the $27 range.

I recommend Moran's - perfect for a holiday group dinner or cozy dinner for two!

Ratings_icons Total Disappointment

We went there for my birthday after reading the reviews on this site. Thnking it will be romantic with good food. What a total disappointment!! Everything from the bread to the wine to the main course was horrible. The seafood was fishy, the meat was dry and hard and the vegetable was salty. It was like eating frozen microwave dinner but 10 times the price. DO NOT GO EVER!! You've been warned.

Pros: Prompt seating

Cons: Everything else

Ratings_icons 5 star price, 3 star food ...

I read the reviews and was a skeptical of the reviews so I decide to test the water. Bam! They were right. The place was nice but definitely not great and it was by no means the most romantic place. The food was fine but I would not say great, especially for the price of it. Good luck to all of you skeptical review reader - like myself ... :)

Pros: Place is ok

Cons: Too pricey for the quality of food.

Ratings_icons If Only the Quality Matched the Prices...

My wife and I had been driving past Moran's on occasion for years, finally decided to make a reservation and give it a shot. We arrived around 6 PM one very chilly Saturday night, were greeted warmly and were seated at a comfortable table within sight of the fireplace. We thought, "This is great, we're in for a terrific evening.."

And we were, until we had the misfortune of trying the food. The wine list is serviceable and fairly priced, the service is professional and friendly, and the place itself is totally inviting with its dark wood and fireplace ambiance.

Unfortunately, the steak is second-tier at best. They charge around $40 for a steak, which is in line with the top steakhouses in NYC, but they serve up a steak that I could get in a diner. We ordered oysters to start and when I asked for some horseradish it caused a stir, and what I got was a jar of horseradish that looked to me like it hadn't been out of the refrigerator since the last century.

Believe me, we were totally disappointed because we REALLY wanted to like this place, and the fact is that we did on a lot of levels. But the quality of the food is such that they should be ashamed to charge the prices they do.

I'm sorry to be at such variance with the other reviewers here, but the meal we were served would have been barely adequate if we were eating at Mel's Diner. The only things that stick out in my mind of quality were the rolls.

Major steakhouses in NYC order prime meats, but it looked to us like Moran's buys choice instead of prime. If the quality of the steak were equal to even half the size, we'd have had a much better meal.

My suggestion is to drop into Moran's for a drink at the inviting bar, maybe have a hamburger at most, but save the (very high) cost of a second rate meal.

Pros: Terrific ambience, friendly service, warm and friendly atmosphere

Cons: Terrible, terrible food

Ratings_icons Nice place, nice service, quality food

Had wedding here in '97, back at least once a year on anniversary - always enjoy the food & memories

Pros: Ambience

Ratings_icons We ate the food at our own wedding!

It was that good. Great steaks, fabulous desserts, even the vegetables and salads were excellent. The baby lamb chops are deservedly famous. What's more, the portions were huge and the value even bigger. All thanks to that humble genius of a manager, Tom Murphy. Even the jaded Manhattanites and snobbish Bostonians among our guests were impressed! A great place to tie the knot or just loosen your belt.

Pros: Pretty room with fireplaces, copper and crystal.

Ratings_icons Great Find

ktislove

The ambiance, food and service were all great. As soon as we walked in they took our coats and seated us by a fire place which was warm and romantic. We ordered fries as an appetizer, we really didn't see anything else we wanted. The portion was a little small but good enough to put something in the belly without getting full. I had the shrimp scampi with a yellow rice and sautéed spinach and my botfriend had lamb chops which was not on the menu but they were kind enough to make any way, with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. I never had to call the waitress over because she was very attentive even though she had other tables. The bill came to about $90 for the both of us, but if it had been more I wouldn't have minded paying for the over all experience.

Pros: Atmosphere, Food , Service

Cons: Music

Ratings_icons Great Irish steakhouse, get married here

spudspudly

I got married here three years ago and it was an outstanding experience. The food and service were wonderful and they really worked with us beforehand to help us save money and have a great event (ask for Tom). Have been back a few times for dinner and the food is very good, if a bit on the pricey side. I've never had a bad dish here, from grilled scallop salad to linguine and seafood to the 24 oz. porterhouse, it's always been good. Nice atmosphere as well, with lots of dark wood and crystal, tastefully done.

Pros: Food, Service, Events

Ratings_icons Very flattering lighting! That's important!

i82much

I had a first date here and I think the lighting helped me land a second date! I swear. The food was really good, too. I thought it was very romantic. Tables are nicely spaced so you have privacy. Service is very fast and the waitresses are so sweet. If you want to look hot, but not actually be hot, don't sit near a fireplace. Especially in a wooly sweater!! There was a party going on in the next room and we barely heard them. Plus, there's parking right on the street. I loved the old New York feeling of the place. I've recommended this to all my friends looking for a romantic spot.

Pros: service, old world charm, food

Ratings_icons intimate

Moran's is the most intimate restaurant we ever been to. My husband and I walked in there for the first time and looked at each other and said this is where we are getting married. There is a beautiful rustic party room in which we celebrated our amazing wedding. The service was very accomadating and the food was delicious. Every one of our guests loved the place and intend to go back for that cozy, romantic feel. We highly recommend Moran's for a delicious, romantic, intimate time....Enjoy!!!!!!

From the opening welcome to the last goodbye, the perfect spot to feel really good while dining well. The staff take care of your spirit, the chef takes care of your taste.
Tom Murphy, the mgr extraordinaire, oversees it all with charm, efficiency and great style. Having a banquet (as we did)? This place will make you a hero with your guests!
A true NYC treasure spot.

Moran's is a cozy old-school retreat in the middle of the new Restaurant Row: fireplaces, great steaks, and friendly Irish service. They're great for private parties as well.

Pros: friendly, good parking

Ratings_icons Perfect Evening!

Stopped by Moran's the other night for an impromtu birthday party. Very convivial atmosphere, very relaxed & charming staff, even though eating late never felt rushed. Food was great. Only negative was that the wine selected was not available and another bottle was offered but we were not told that was another $10 in price. All in all a great place for large or small parties in a charming almost bygone New York!

Ratings_icons Loved it.

nancybill

We stopped by for lunch at the bar one day - calamari and drinks - and we loved it. Took 6 friends recently for dinner and they loved it. We're going back tonight to try that outrageous looking petite filet mignon. The only negative so far has been the lobster salad - way too salty. Everything else has been pleasant here. We're considering hosting a big birthday bash later this year at Moran's. Have only heard good things about it.

Pros: Good Sat nite parking, Great steaks, Nice Bar

Cons: Lobster salad
