Had dinner Tuesday at Moran's Chelsea...Really liked mostly everything ordered. Baked clams, salad w/blu cheese dressing, all great. Strip steak, mashed & creamed spinich. I did not care for the spinich, I like it chopped fine, I guess

The best steak I had ever eaten. It was on this restaurant. I could not forget that time. It was in the evening, I really hungry during that night and I was craving for a steak. The first choice I had in mind was Moran's Restaurant right away.\r
The place is so classical. I really liked the theme that was set up on the restaurant. It's like an Old fashioned restaurant. And I really liked it.\r
But most of all, what I like most is the steak. It's just simply fantastic. It was cooked to the finest. And now I am craving for more.\r

Morans was a perfect venue for our wedding reception for many reasons: it has a friendly atmosphere, excellent food and drink, extremely friendly staff and the best event coordinator/manager you could wish for, Tom Murphy.

From the moment we first met Tom I think I knew that Morans was where I wanted to hold our wedding reception. Tom is very straight talking, none of the typical NYC fluff and he made it clear very early on that he would have everything covered on the wedding day and in safe hands. Everytime we met Tom he was very professional, courteous and although hes obviously a very busy man, he fit us in even when we turned up unannounced.

Over the months we worked with Tom on our wedding, he showed flexibility (we changed the table arrangement many times and completed the reception in a rather odd order), willingness to go above and beyond (he entertained specific requests for Australian wine and a specific signature cocktail from Australia) and shared his experience which allowed us to develop, with him, the best reception we would have hoped for (in fact better!).

As the wedding drew closer, Tom kindly allowed us to store items at Morans (we made our own centerpieces, place names etc) and he also dealt with enquiries from other members of the wedding party such as my Mum! Tom was even gracious enough to work with our wedding day planner and ensure that they fulfilled their duties as well.

On the day of the wedding Tom and his staff were beyond wonderful. Everyone was looked after extremely well and he even had a team charged with completing our photo guest book for us - way beyond the call of duty, but immensely appreciated. He ran everything like clockwork, dealt with anything thrown his way (we had a birthday cake to present and had to present it earlier than expected - the cake Morans produced was amazing) and all our guests kept commenting on how much they enjoyed the food and location of the reception.

Looking back on our wedding day now, I still find it astounding that we were able to find a reception location in the middle of Manhattan, at an extremely reasonable price and with such a great team of people (and great food!).

I cant recommend Morans to anyone enough - Tom and his staff go above and beyond what you would expect and its because of their efforts that our wedding reception was the amazing success it was. Truly exceptional.

I recently photographed a beautiful wedding at Moran's and have to say I was really impressed with the room and the overall feel of the place. The back room is made for weddings and everything looked beautiful. The food was really outstanding and the staff was very pleasant to work with. I'd highly recommend it for weddings under 100 people (or however many they are suited for). You can view some of my photos through my blog which can be seen at danielkrieger(dot)com

Cons: not really made for super large weddings

My wife and I were looking for a place to get a drink after seeing a play nearby. We are not from NYC so we weren't expecting much. As we were walking by this quaint restaurant, we noticed a fireplace in the window. Being the middle of winter we were immediately drawn in.
Well, once we walked in, we were immediately greeted and had our coats taken and hung up. We were going to sit at the bar and just have a drink, but once you smell the food being cooked in the kitchen (which is open for all to see) you have no choice but to eat. And eat we did.

My wife and I both shared the fried Zucchini which is shoestring style. Light crispy and VERY addicting. We also shared the Mac and Cheese which is TO DIE FOR. As we weren't that hungry after all that, we then shared the Grilled Seafood. Which was so delicious and fresh. Lobster tail, Scallops,Salmon and Shrimp. All of my favorites.

We will definitely be coming back. Possibly just to eat here!

Very nice and unique decor. \r

Good seafood. The accompanying sauces and little sides stood out as much as the fish itself. \r

Will not be an inexpensive dinner to take your time and enjoy yourself\r

The corned beef sandwich I had was a bit pricey, but solid. The fries were great too. Drinks were refreshed immediately, and service was excellent. A good place for a business meeting-- there's plenty of seating, it's somewhat upscale, and there is minimal risk of offending anyone.

I am not reviewing the actual restaurant as much as a particular dish. If you go to The Moran?s, I highly recommend the jumbo shrimp with a zesty cocktail sauce. The House salad , was this good! One of the best meals I have had in New York. The only drawback - just slightly too salty. That's pretty salty because I add salt to EVERYTHING. The shrimps are also cooked so perfectly. In addition, their drinks were perfect too.I would recommend to anyone.

We had our daughter's Bat Mitzvah here and it couldn't have gone any better. Service was great, food was great, atmosphere was wonderful and staff was so helpful and friendly. I've had many friends that attended the Bat Mitzvah come back for dinner with and without us. They loved it.

Last night my dinner at Moran's was extrodinary. I had the Filet Mignon cooked exactlly to the tempature I specificed which came with mashed potatoes that tasted homemade. My boyfriend ordered the Surf and Turf which I tried. The lobster was incredible, nothing I have ever experienced in New York City, usually lobster only tastes good to me when I'm up in Maine. After dinner we ordered desert and then he proposed to me! It was the best place to have been proposed to. The scene at Moran's is extremlly romantic with dim lighting, fireplaces, waterford crystals, brick, wood and the christmas decorations were spectacular. Moran's has a very comfortable, warm, welcoming and romantic setting with wonderful food and excellent service. I can not wait to return.

I recently dined with a group of six at Moran's in Chelsea -- we had an excellent experience! We were seated at a back table near the fireplace and Christmas tree - very cozy atmosphere! The waiter was prompt (but then a little vacant once the restaurant filled up) and drinks were served quickly. We all ordered different food - sole stuffed with lobster, strip steak, seafood linguine, surf & turf -- everything was delicious! I was disappointed the restaurant was out of creamed spinach that night (and it was early) - as it's my favorite. Prices were on target, most entrees were in the $27 range.\r
\r
I recommend Moran's - perfect for a holiday group dinner or cozy dinner for two!

We went there for my birthday after reading the reviews on this site. Thnking it will be romantic with good food. What a total disappointment!! Everything from the bread to the wine to the main course was horrible. The seafood was fishy, the meat was dry and hard and the vegetable was salty. It was like eating frozen microwave dinner but 10 times the price. DO NOT GO EVER!! You've been warned.

I read the reviews and was a skeptical of the reviews so I decide to test the water. Bam! They were right. The place was nice but definitely not great and it was by no means the most romantic place. The food was fine but I would not say great, especially for the price of it. Good luck to all of you skeptical review reader - like myself ... :)

My wife and I had been driving past Moran's on occasion for years, finally decided to make a reservation and give it a shot. We arrived around 6 PM one very chilly Saturday night, were greeted warmly and were seated at a comfortable table within sight of the fireplace. We thought, ""This is great, we're in for a terrific evening..""\r
\r
And we were, until we had the misfortune of trying the food. The wine list is serviceable and fairly priced, the service is professional and friendly, and the place itself is totally inviting with its dark wood and fireplace ambiance.\r
\r
Unfortunately, the steak is second-tier at best. They charge around $40 for a steak, which is in line with the top steakhouses in NYC, but they serve up a steak that I could get in a diner. We ordered oysters to start and when I asked for some horseradish it caused a stir, and what I got was a jar of horseradish that looked to me like it hadn't been out of the refrigerator since the last century.\r
\r
Believe me, we were totally disappointed because we REALLY wanted to like this place, and the fact is that we did on a lot of levels. But the quality of the food is such that they should be ashamed to charge the prices they do.\r
\r
I'm sorry to be at such variance with the other reviewers here, but the meal we were served would have been barely adequate if we were eating at Mel's Diner. The only things that stick out in my mind of quality were the rolls. \r
\r
Major steakhouses in NYC order prime meats, but it looked to us like Moran's buys choice instead of prime. If the quality of the steak were equal to even half the size, we'd have had a much better meal.\r
\r
My suggestion is to drop into Moran's for a drink at the inviting bar, maybe have a hamburger at most, but save the (very high) cost of a second rate meal.

It was that good. Great steaks, fabulous desserts, even the vegetables and salads were excellent. The baby lamb chops are deservedly famous. What's more, the portions were huge and the value even bigger. All thanks to that humble genius of a manager, Tom Murphy. Even the jaded Manhattanites and snobbish Bostonians among our guests were impressed! A great place to tie the knot or just loosen your belt.

The ambiance, food and service were all great. As soon as we walked in they took our coats and seated us by a fire place which was warm and romantic. We ordered fries as an appetizer, we really didn't see anything else we wanted. The portion was a little small but good enough to put something in the belly without getting full. I had the shrimp scampi with a yellow rice and sautéed spinach and my botfriend had lamb chops which was not on the menu but they were kind enough to make any way, with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. I never had to call the waitress over because she was very attentive even though she had other tables. The bill came to about $90 for the both of us, but if it had been more I wouldn't have minded paying for the over all experience.

I got married here three years ago and it was an outstanding experience. The food and service were wonderful and they really worked with us beforehand to help us save money and have a great event (ask for Tom). Have been back a few times for dinner and the food is very good, if a bit on the pricey side. I've never had a bad dish here, from grilled scallop salad to linguine and seafood to the 24 oz. porterhouse, it's always been good. Nice atmosphere as well, with lots of dark wood and crystal, tastefully done.

I had a first date here and I think the lighting helped me land a second date! I swear. The food was really good, too. I thought it was very romantic. Tables are nicely spaced so you have privacy. Service is very fast and the waitresses are so sweet. If you want to look hot, but not actually be hot, don't sit near a fireplace. Especially in a wooly sweater!! There was a party going on in the next room and we barely heard them. Plus, there's parking right on the street. I loved the old New York feeling of the place. I've recommended this to all my friends looking for a romantic spot.

Stopped by Moran's the other night for an impromtu birthday party. Very convivial atmosphere, very relaxed & charming staff, even though eating late never felt rushed. Food was great. Only negative was that the wine selected was not available and another bottle was offered but we were not told that was another $10 in price. All in all a great place for large or small parties in a charming almost bygone New York!

We stopped by for lunch at the bar one day - calamari and drinks - and we loved it. Took 6 friends recently for dinner and they loved it. We're going back tonight to try that outrageous looking petite filet mignon. The only negative so far has been the lobster salad - way too salty. Everything else has been pleasant here. We're considering hosting a big birthday bash later this year at Moran's. Have only heard good things about it.
