I've been to this place twice. Aesthetically it's a cute place- nice outside seating. It has a very small parking lot- which I wouldn't mid if the place was worth going to. Happy Hour consists of taking $1.00 off of drinks that are priced

I was there last Saturday with a large group of friends and unfortunately one of them got their credit card stolen by someone that works there, just by opening up a tab at the bar. An obscene amount of money was charged on it and now

Been a big fan of this place for several years... always recommending it and visiting for the freshly made high quality drinks...

Went there this weekend..and it su***! The drinks we had were TERRIBLE.

The only thing I can think of is that the new staff just doesn't know their way around that bar.

We left our drinks 2/3 full.. only to get home and realize we also got the wrong amount of change. Short changed! (partly our fault for not checking, but this certainly didn't help)

This place used to be great.. I hope this is just a one time deal.

I have recently moved out to Colorado, but this is the one thing I miss most about Houston. The juke box is the greatest box I've ever seen. I like fairly obscure music, but this selection is even more than my tastes ever went. You can push random buttons and I'd love anything that came out of it.

The drinks are great...all my friend's love the Bloody Marry's, the screwdrivers, etc. Not many tap beers, but what they have are high quality...no alcoholic water. The food menu is minimal, but great. Italian queso is a normal win.

I always stopped here on my way back from work when 59 was backed up heading into downtown. A beer and a sandwich at the bar is a nice cool down.

It does get crowded at nights with younger people, but this place shines during the day. The most laid-back place you'll find, typically with an older working crowd. Bring a pack of cards... play all day out on the porch, etc. We've never been hassled even if we haven't bought anything for hours.

Sunday's are usually empty, and great for a day full of celebrating whatever it is you feel you want to celebrate. First game of pool for the day is always free!

Pros: Best juke box ever, staff

Cons: College crowd and loud at night

Relaxed atmosphere. Lot of characters, I mean the customers and workers all talk to you like they know you. I guess some people won't like that. If you like good music, they've got one hell of a juke box in there... All selections are hand chosen w/ little notes to clue you in on stuff you might not know but might want to listen to. Cold beer and good drinks. Can't wait to go back.

First off, I feel the need to defend this place against its one bad review. I frequent the Volcano and have never seen it packed with obnoxious college kids or power-starved bouncers. In fact I think this person must be getting his bars confused. The Volcano is a great casual place to have a few beers or specialty drinks (the best bloody mary's I have ever had) and you don't have to scream over the music to hear what people are saying. One of my favorite places to get a drink and relax with friends in Houston.

Pro's
1. Nicely decorated
2. Reasonable selection of beverages
3. Good outdoor seating

Con's
1. Some staff are very rude
2. Bouncers have been known to through too much weight around
3. Too many college kids...(sorry guys, just I am a bit older and quieter that is all)
4. Parking can be difficult
5. Food pretty boring

Tried to go to Volcano for a friend's birthday this past Saturday. Couldn't enter due to someone having an expired license, no joke about 15 of us headed out cause the stupid bouncer wouldn't let him in. (they lost about $400 in sales) Seriously folks, this is the worst place to go after dinner!!! Management is very rude especially one particular bouncer (not that he's management!). Regardless,he must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed!!! I guess he realized his future as a rent a cop is basically no future at all! Beware, if you don't show your ID properly at a certain angle, he will go after you and try to start a fight with you!!! Can not believe Volcano hires rude rent a bouncers whose IQ is a negative! Go to Kay's across the street, it's a divey bar but has lots of character!!!

We went for a friend's Birthday Celebration, and it was FUN!!! Great uncommon bar food! I'm not a big drinker, So I was excited to see drinks that I could sip on, Like the Hot CoccoLoco; hot chocolate with Kalua, some cocco rum, AND homemade whipping cream to top it off! My husband, who is the partier of our family, had a great time with their specialty drinks too!!!! The selection of tequila, scotch, and wines appeased everyone at the party (even the restauranteur whose birthday it was)!!!
All in all, the volcano has a lively atmosphere, great staff, interesting drinks!
We loved it and will now become regulars!!

Pros: New Great Manager, Specialty Drinks and Food, "Tiki" Decor, Music Selection

Cons: Nothing I could tell

Volcano is a great place to hang! Great music, great staff and the best drinks in town. They use all freshly squeezed juices in their specialty drinks and the Frozen Screwdrivers are awesome. They also have the best Roast Beef Sandwich you'll ever find with a chimichuray sauce that is to die for. There's a good diversity of clientele from the 20 somethings to the 40 somethings anyone can have a good time here.

I lived in Houston for 5 years and moved to the big apple 4 years ago. Many of my fondest memories were at the Volcano. Pete has taken a neighborhood bar and added a feel that attracts everyone. Some of my best friends are people I met at the volcano. At any given point you could find a down town exec, frat boy, and construction worker socializing together, or playing pool against each other. Something about that bar could break down social walls. I only wish Pete would consider bringing that same atmosphere and the frozen screwdrivers to the big apple.

I read the reviews about this bar and wanted to give my own. I have been to Volcano on many occasions. Oppresive bouncers, not to me. I get a friendly hello and a handshake each time I show up. I like those guys. I prefer to go when it is not so crouded, but it is still fun when full. Full it does get, but there is lots of good atmosphere and eye candy to be enjoyed. The staff seems pretty stable, and it's nice to be recognized. The girls can be ruthless with bad tippers, even thought they seem to think 15 percent is horrid. The waistaff is memorable. One is full of attitude in a good way, and another that always seems to be crying. It worth a visit, and another, and another.

Yes it is a bit of a meatmarket. Yeah there are some fratboys. But come on, why pick on the bouncers. Those guys are doing their job. If you don't bring an ID, or it is way expired, or you show you probation ID for DWI, then you aren't going toget in. Those are the breaks, kid. Live with it.

Pros: The Bouncers

.

The reviews which recommend this bar are quite frankly misleading. This bar is terrible, over-priced and full of drunk frat boys. The staff are rude and the bouncers are probably ex-huntsville inmates. Avoid at all costs, especially if you don't want to turn up the next day at work with an injury due to over zealous door staff. They charge a minimum of $10.00 on credit cards, so forget about popping after work for a quick one! Not very romantic at all and best left alone. Apparently used to be the place to go, now the place to avoid...avoid...avoid...avoid...PLEASE!

This place is overpriced and totally not worth it. The waitstaff/bartenders are rude and take forever to get your drink/food. I won't be going back any time soon.

This is my local hang-out when I have no plans or we just want a great happy hour after work. You can always just walk in and instantly make new friends. Great frozen drinks and outdoors area.
It's quiet enough to carry a conversation without yelling. The music used to be the best but has recently been updated to new music I am not familiar with but it may be that my music tastes need updating. LOVE IT!

I frequent this establishment during the week after work. The bar staff are cool and the patrons like to take it easy. The bar is named after one of my favorite books, which initially got my attention. Then once I went inside and felt the relaxed vibe, drank a few mojitos, I realized that it was an oasis from the busy Houston life.

Thriving on Austin's 6th street scene for the past two years, Volcano impressed my previously warped vision of Houston's nightlife. Perhaps growing up in the northern suburbs jaded me; I know only of two or three places that downtown offers. Regardless, Under the Volcano uses a lot of smoke an mirrors, but pulls it off well. A bit expensive compared to $1 beer Thursdays in Austin, but a great atmosphere and very authentic mixed drinks. Downside: They desperately need a bigger bar.
