Don't get deceived by the entrance...once you enter the place ... everything gets transformed, the ambience is warm and inviting.. the staff polite ,friendly and well informed about the menu.. and the food itself amongst the best what we have had in New York. I stumbled on to this place but now whenever opportunity permits.. like to dine out here with business clients.

This is one of the worst indian restaurant. Food is bad and management is even worse, when we went in the restaurant they told us to sit in a place where they can accomadate only 4 person but we were six. when one of us sat in other place they said that it is booked but no one came till the end. The food was not fresh they were not active in doing there work and when we paid the bill they demanded more tip and they spoke very rudely. I will never go to the restaurant and i recommend you all not to go there.

If you like Indian food and you like a buffet, this is a perfect lunch destination if you work in midtown. Buffet is located upstairs and is about $15/ per person. Great vegetarian options as well as meat dishes. Good service. Great naan and dessert.

I've been to Jewel of India a few times and have had a great meal each and every time. The food is fresh and tasty and there are plenty of choices for vegetarians. The service is very good and the location is perfect for a lunch meeting or dinner with friends.

Yes, the Jewel of India is charmingly eccentric, more shabby than chic but the food is awful! Maybe it was good a few decades ago and it's true that, by picking VERY carefully through the menu , a just about OK meal can be constructed. Anyway, the Jewel of India is historic with great photos from the Independence era, so enjoy it for that!

Jewel of India has delicious Indian Food. I've tried many of the dishes there and all are served hot and fresh and with just the right amount of spice. The lunch buffet is excellent too. Great service and a convenient midtown location make this a mainstay in my rotation.

My girlfriend and I return for buffet around 2pm today excitedly. The 2nd-floor waitress refused to sit us at a wider, comfortable table. I asked now is not peak time and less than one-third tables were seated. She made an quick story that there would be 50 people coming sitting there soon. The buffet was closed less than 30 minutes while we ate. I couldn't understand why she needed to lie for her laziness of cleaning table after clients left.

This is the epitome of an Indian restaurant that has no clue of what service is all about nor do they now what good food is all about, and on top of that they
have the sheer arrogance of tacking on a 18% TIP (yes TIP !) on the check when they do not know what the word TIP stands for ! Maybe someone ought to educate the so called "Manager" (more like the "Mis-Manager") by the name of Anand Gadkar, who thinks he is running a Shiv Sena dhaba in Grant Road (instead of a fine cuisine place in NYC) what the word TIP stands for i.e TIP = To Insure Prompt service . !! Jeez how do these people get to run restaurants in a city like NYC..(my hometown)..is beyond me...
I was there with my wife and my 12 yr old and my 3 yr old and when I challenged the Mandaory 18% TIP the arrogant and profane Gadkar tacked on - he had the gall to call me a "bustard" (his pronunciation :) )in front of my family.
Jeez. These low life Indian restaurateurs should be made extinct soon. Welcome to America..Not !!

I went to this place on Wednesday November 15 at 3.30 PM. I heard about this restaurant and always wanted to go there. I did not know that the restaurant was closed by 3 PM. I entered with my colleagues. There is this guy sitting in the restaurant and I asked him if the restaurant is still open or not as I did not see any one. He was so rude to me and without even getting up from the chair he replied that ?No food it is closed , go ,? and all the time he was plucking his teeth and was sitting on a chair keeping his leg on the table
May be the food is good inside, may be the interiors are good but in a service oriented industry like that of restaurants if the service is not good and if people are so dumb and rude not to even reply to your customers properly then take my word this restaurant is not worth even considering to go. All I can say was I was so embarrassed by the way I was treated.

Cons: the worst service i ever saw in my life time

The standouts here were the wonderful service and the great deal on the lunch buffet. The food was good (especially for the price) - not the best Indian food I've ever had, but quite tasty. They do tone the spice down a lot to accomodate the general masses. The only downside was that the naan was a bit dried out (but I suppose that's the danger of serving it in a buffet line). I imagine this is a great place to grab a business lunch.

my friends and i decided to stop in for brunch. the sign says that they are open at noon. we were there at 11:45 and they were kind enough to let us in and sit in the bar area while they set up the food. however, the food was not ready until 12:15. not a big deal but if you are hungry or need to be somewhere immediately after lunch, you need to take that into consideration. the food was ok. the spinach was very good. the tandoori chicken was a tad bit dry though. the other chicken dish (forget the name) on a red sauce was very tasty. the naan bread was a bit bland. the service is very friendly and attentive. if i am in the area and want cheap, fast indian food, i would probably go back.

Service is not particularly warm, but I've gone back again and again (for dinner) over the years on an almost monthly basis. The restaurant is gorgeous though a little shabby and I enjoy the quiet atmosphere. I've tried many different dishes and they are all incredibly delicious, especially the lamp pasanda, the goat dish, and the pulao. We've never left there disappointed or hungry. I'd say it's not an exceptional value but a place to treat yourself and your friends.

Nobody eats in the TD for value, but the prices at this place are large, the portions are smallish and it is overall lacking in the little extras -- like butter on the naan or rice with the entrees. Chicken Tikka Masala with rice and naan shouldn't cost over $20. There's nothing wrong with the food, but it's just "good;" I've eaten at least a dozen better Indian restaurants in the city. It's better than cheap Indian takeout, sure, but it's no value. Then there's the decor. I imagine that this place height of distinguished chic in the late 1970s, but now it just feels like you wandered onto the set of Scarface. The interior could really use a make-over and the chairs should just be chucked and replaced -- some of them are falling apart.

I went to this place with some family that I hadn't seen in a while. If not for the virtue of that fact I would've noticed much sooner just how long it was taking for our food to arrive. Appetizers took their sweet time in coming, and literally about an hour later we had our main dishes which were very small considering the price. The food was consumed in a matter of minutes and we got out of there as soon as we could. I've had better Indian food for less than half the price

The food at Jewel is good, not great, just good. The vindaloo was rich and extra spicy, to my liking. The curries were ok and they custom made a southern Indian dish for us which was also good. The breads were average for Indian; naan good, onion kulche good, poori not so good. The problem with the overall experience was the price. You pay midtown theatre prices for good takeout food. I wasn't displeased with my meal, just what I paid for it.

I remember having a good experience the last time we went (a few years ago, also based on citysearch recommendations). This time, however, I noted that one of the waitstaff was especially gruff and seemed to have an attitude of "Why do EYE have to SERVE you?" Food portions were meager for the price (despite location), although quality was acceptable. Naan came unbuttered, a minor sign of cheapness. A more major sign of cheapness was that the chairs were dirty, and mine was actually falling apart. They probably hadn't been changed since the last time we went.

First of all, the buffet lunch for $14.00 is an excellent deal. The food is good, and the mango lassi was good as well. I enjoyed my dining experience, and would definitely return. The lamb and chicken are very well prepared and very tender. The bread, appetizers, and other entrees were also quite good. Overall, for $14, you can have an excellent lunch, and enjoy a nice Indian meal. Dinner is a bit more pricey, so lunch may be the better option for some, but either way you are sure to enjoy your dining experience.
