You probably shouldn't try to have dinner here considering that this restaurant no longer serves customers. :(

Great ambiance and friendly staff at this downtown Bistro. The menu is creative and changes regularly but the best aspect is the price. You must try the Mushroom and truffle risotto.

You must try the risotto! It is amazing! Always find something new on menu that appeases my palate. If restaurant is full try the bar. They serve food as well.

me and a friend of mine were trying to decide where to eat on friday night and i mentioned starlight. she thought we would have a problem getting a table but i talked her into it. soo glad i did. it was the best dinner i have had in so long, simply perfect. my friend started off with the warm spinach salad, i had the mussels. it is so nice for a chef to do something different with mussels, everyone does the same old white wine garlic shallots lemon juice, witch don't get me wrong i love, but these were amazing. they were steamed in heffewizen and goat cheese with a little tarragon, wow. after that we ordered a bottle of wine witch our very knowledgable server recomended, he was great and very handsom by the way, anyways the wine was perfect and just like he described it.we finished off splitting the grouper that the server said was brand new to the menu and it was perfect, summer vegetables citrus butter and jasmin rice, really good. we did not have room for dessert after that but we did move to the bar for a night cap and had a delicious fresh kiwi martini. over all we loved the place and ill be back next time im in town. thanks starlite

We were happy (and suprise) on Sat night I called at 730pm and got reservations at 8:30pm. Sure it's summer but the economy has definitely opened up seating in our favorite places.
Starlite was very nice, located downtown in the thick of all the fun. Valet the car and walk 3 doors down.
You walk in to their hostess and a small bar scene of alterna-snob-service-industry types. But once you invade their territory you make it to the very nice and clean restaurant.
The food was good - we enjoyed the oyster app, loved the tomato soup special (delicious) and then moved into main courses of a very nice seared tuna dish and the delicious lamb. Despite both of us having cauliflower side dished they were so different and excellent (the curry cauliflower was fantastic). We enjoyed the wine and Candide as well as the chocoilate dessert quite a bit.

Really a nice spot, but expect to pay a little more than an average night out. Service was good although we sometimes felt rushed when they cleared out plates as the last bit was still enroute to our mouth. Although they were very attentive as my wife burned her hand on one of the plates and a person filling water noticed - they aske dif she needed anything which was nce...what was cool is we heard they start to warncustomers of the temps of the plates afterwards. Good communicators.

We'll be back.

For my first dinner out in our new hometown of Austin - I picked the Starlite and took my (super picky) friend. I checked the menu online before we went just to get an idea of their cuisine and it everything sounded fantastic - creative and inventive, but not too strange. We got there a little early and figured we'd have to wait at the bar until our reservation, but the very nice hostess said she could seat us right away. I immediately liked the overall vibe - cool and understated. I should mention we moved here from Dallas and I have an extremely low tolerance for anything that smacks of pretension. Service was attentive and smart. My friend has very specific likes/dislikes and she was looking for a certain tasting wine. Our server suggested one for her to try and it was right on the mark. We started with two appetizers - the heirloom tomatoes & the mushroom risotto. Both were fantastic. We shared the salmon entree - it was just seared on the outside, nice & tender on the inside - yummy! Fresh peach cobbler topped off the meal. Overall, Starlite exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be back!

I took my daughter out to eat on a Saturday night, but we didn't have to wait very long for our table because she had made a reservation. It was disappointing to be seated in the back room at one of those tiny two-people tables pushed up against the wall. The fact that I could see one man sitting in the main dining room at a big fat four-top all by himself for a whole meal made me wonder if he had better connections than I do. Plus, he was almost the only thing I could see from my vantage point, but whatev. Our server was helpful and attentive. The manager was nice and made sure that we got the exact kind of wine that we wanted. We did drinks, apps, entrees, wine, and yes even dessert....hey it was her birthday dinner. If I go back, I will DEF request to be in the main dining area. It's a beautiful place...from what I could see.

My wife and I were celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Starlite last week. We had been to their old location on 34th street, but we don't go downtown a lot. The new location is so elegant, with the wood planks above the bar and the chandelier in the dining room. We called ahead and asked for an intimate table, and the manager recommended the upstairs lounge. It was just what we wanted for a nice, quiet dinner. They have another bar up there with couches to relax and enjoy an after dinner drink. Now, the food. For starters, we tried the risotto, which is one of the best in town. After that, the warm spinach salad, which I have to say thankfully hasn't changed since the old location. The main course we tried the Striped Bass, recommended by the waiter and the Beef Tenderloin, which rivals any steakhouse around here. The dessert we tried was a flourless chocolate cake that melted in your mouth. I can see why they moved up on the top ten list. Our dinner was exactly what we were looking for, and we are going back, not just for a special occasion. You will love it as well.

To make the story short: My fiancee and I went to Starlite. Sat at a table in the bar, just wanted some apps and a glass of wine. Waited nearly 10 minutes for someone to come over (many employees walked by many times). When bartender came over and asked what we wanted we had to ask for menus. He walked away and did a couple of jobs before coming back a few minutes later. We ordered 2 apps. They came out. We asked for silverware. We waited a few more minutes. The risotto was better than most.

Food was pretty good. Service was almost unacceptably lousy. I understand that the attractive women sitting at the bar were more fun to shower with his attention, but come on. Gimme just a little love. Why it is so hard to find professional service in Austin is a mystery to me. I did tip 15% but here is the tip I wanted to leave: If you work as a server, smile. Make your customers feel welcome. Do not say "Can I get you something" as you are looking down at the table and there are no menus in our hands. Look me in the eye. Make sure I have a menu, for god's sake. Please do not drop the plates loudly on the marble table. If you do not like to serve people, get another job in another industry or at least fake it.

This was our second time to dine here in about 7 months time. First time food was great, service was good(acceptable) but not special. Great decor and ambiance.

Several friends of mine introduced me to Starlite this week. I had heard mixed reviews but wanted to try for myself. I am so glad I did!! The ambiance is fantastic to start with. Good music, pretty people (both guests and staff alike), sassy bar. And then we sat down to our table. Our server, Cory was very knowledgable about the food and the wine. He offered a daily special which was a poricini mushroom dusted tenderloin. I couldn't resist. I ordered the Warm Spinach Salad which was good, but under seasoned. Following the salad, my perfectly cooked tenderloin arrived. It was tasty, seasoned well and cooked to perfection. My friends ordered the Tomato Caprese salads which were fresh and tasty. For their entrees, one friend had the duck breast and the other had the veal t-bone. We all moaned with delight at our plates. My friend that ordered the duck had never tried it before and today- she is a huge fan. We will be returning to Starlite often in the future. I hope I will be able to try something different than the tenderloin-- but it was so good that if they have it again, I might just order it again. :-) Kudos to Starlite and their staff. We had a lovely evening!

I have taken a few people to Starlite now, two of whom were my not-so-trendy parents and we had one of the best meal experiences I have had in a while. My parents seemed to loosen up more than usual, I think in part because of the great food and drinks, our knowledgeable waiter and great management who saw to it that we were as comfortable as possible. More recently, I took a friend of mine to Starlite for her birthday. We went during the 4-7 happy hour and the bartender was great and put up with our indecisiveness with no moans or grunts. We split the bbq quail and the halibut both of which were amazing. I would recommend Starlite to anyone who wants to go downtown without their wallet getting robbed.

I love Starlite, and had never been until recently. My friends had been talking about it forever, and I now know why. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful in helping us select our entrees, which were fabulous. The menu is eclectic and awesomely creative. I would recommend the grilled tuna, which was absolutely perfect. Even above the exquisite food, my group felt welcomed upon arriving because of the warm ambiance. Great service, great food, overall a great time!

I was in Starlite last weekend and enjoyed one of the best meals I have ever had in Austin. We started with cocktails in the bar, and Ben makes the best mojito in town. When we sat down for dinner, our server Cory explained the menu and the specials. He also picked out the wine to go with our choices, and they matched the food perfectly. We had the scallops and the spinach salad, both of which were delightful. We then had the filet special and the lamb. The filet is one of the best I have ever tried, but the lamb was so unique I went to Whole Foods to purchase some. We were to stuffed for desert, but next time I will not pass those up. The ambiance of the place was elegant, but not stuffy. We will for sure be back soon.

I've never written a review of a restaurant before, but after the experience I had at Starlite this past weekend, I feel compelled. Ambience, service, menu all started off well. After placing our order, our salads were brought to the table with a HAIR on my friend's dinner roll plate. We told the waiter and tried to laugh this off and continue to enjoy our meal only to find TWO HAIRS at the bottom of my Caprese Salad - after I had already eaten most of it. YUK! Our waiter was very apologetic and told us that he would send the manager to our table. We waited at least 10 minutes and no one came. We left. About 10 minutes after we left, the manager called my friend's cell phone (used to make the reservation) to try and apologize. His excuse was that he was in the kitchen trying to get our entrees out. Did he really think we were going to be able to eat them?? It goes without saying, we were hugely dissapointed and grossed out.

Six of us went to dinner at Starlite last Saturday night and it was a great experience. The drinks were delicious, the food was amazing and the service was perfect. There's a wide range of options for dinner from vegetarian to fish to red meat. My favorite thing was a Pimm's Martini. Not many people even know about Pimm's let alone include it in a featured drink.

I got to choose a place downtown for dinner and chose here because of the atmosphere and the reputation for being trendy. The place was intimate, which was great for a date, and we got a nice table. Everything is cool about the place but the service is sooooooo SLOW!!!!! We probably sat there for 20 mins before the waiter came over. After placing our appitizer order we waited another 45 mins because the waiter forgot and didn't come by once to check on us.

We finally got all our food and they took care of our salads but it took us 2 and a half hours to eat!!! I may or may not go back but it will have to be a time when I have 3 hours to waste and am not hungry.

I have loved Starlite, and found it to be a great option for nice, upmarket downtown dining. It's not typically too stuffy and the food, in my experience, has typically been a stand out! So, when I went recently for a 30th birthday party, I was SORELY disappointed by both the food and the service. We had called three weeks in advance to make a reservation, and were promised the semi-private upstairs lounge for our group of 11. We were very prompt, and ordered soon after sitting down. Most people ordered a started and an entree, which turned out to be a disaster. Neither the appetizer or main courses were brought out at one time, so we had people waiting upwards of 10 minutes for the entire table to be served before starting to eat, and when it came time for the entrees, one dish was just NEVER BROUGHT OUT (it was especially bad that the woman who never got her food was pregnant). We ended up having to cancel our desert order to make the rest of the night flow on time, and we were just overall very let down. The food was over-salted and not cooked well at all to boot.

I recently had an amazing time at starlite. I frequented their last location and was excited to check out the new space. I was thrilled to find it was even better than before. The salmon was cooked perfectly the waiter was helpful and the hostesses were friendly, gracious, and fabulously dressed! I'm looking forward to having my birthday dinner there in one of their private dining rooms. Love it!

We went to Starlight for brunch on Sunday during our trip in town and it was good. I was a bit miffed when the hostess wouldn't seat us when there were empty tables in the back of the restaurant. She also looked like she just finished working out to the 80's. None the less, french toast was good and the eggs benedict were to standard. We also has some bancock eggs which were interesting. The food is a little over priced but a nice atmosphere once we go through the door.

Extremely slow. Seems to be the kitchen. They can't get food out. If they are having a private party, the rest of the diners suffer. We had reservations at 8:30pm on a Thurs. About 4 other tables were occupied. Ordered at 8:45pm. At 10:10pm finally asked where our entrees were. The waitress apologized and said there was a party upstairs which was causing the delay. Entrees finally showed up at 10:20pm along with the manager who told us he was sorry we didn't know Starlite was a "slow dining restaurant and to expect to spend 3-4 hrs. there". I don't mind lingering over dinner, and I hate being rushed, but any place that forces me to wait for my entree for over an hour is not a slow dining experience, it's just slow.

Starlite has inventive, sophisticated food without a hint of stuffiness. We went on a Thursday evening with my parents to celebrate a special day. It was our first visit. We were all impressed. Our waiter, Michael, nailed his recommendations. Be sure to ask for him; he was outstanding. My only quibble is the wine list - it seems extremely heavy on the pinot noirs, but has only a couple of cabs. Not that I don't like pinot, I just think the wine list isn't well balanced. Food was delicious with interesting little twists to keep things exciting. We will definitely be back!

Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food

Cons: Typical Warehouse District parking hassles, just valet

I have been dining at Starlite for years now. I am one of the many that was sad to see them leave their old location, but I do have to say that everything there is still wonderful. The food is some of the best in Austin and while the restaurant is a lot different overall, I have had nothing but great experiences there. My waitress the last time was highly knowledgeable and a sweetheart to boot. The main dining room can get a bit loud, but try the lounge upstairs if you'd like something more intimate. All around one of my all time favorites.

I ate the tastiest soup at Starlite last night. It took everything in me to keep from licking the bowl. The crab appetizer was delightful. The wait staff is not only knowledgeable but also fun and sexya beautiful redhead helped me find the perfect wine to complement my meal. My sister and her friends enjoyed the exquisite private dinning area. My sister had a very memorable Birthday Dinner.

Pros: Fantastic Food, Good Drink Selection, Divine Design

Cons: Valet is a must

If you enjoy overpaying for mediocre food and getting some of the worst service available downtown, this is the place for you. One piece of advice though...bring a snack and a flask with you because the food takes forever and the drinks are short poured.

Pros: Location, Fast Seating

Cons: Service, Food Timing

Getting drinks was very slow. Menu was not as planned. There was only one waitstaff to take orders and with 26 people that took about 25-30 minutes. There was a major delay in getting food out, which was compounded by the fact that there was some kind of crisis in the alley that the chef had to get involved with. The salads alone were delayed for approximately 45 minutes (after the orders were taken). The Romaine salads were considered bad, the cod was not hot enough, the pork chops were tough, and the potato dish with the pork was just bad. The dishes used to hold the appetizers were very heavy and were difficult to pass.

This upscale-wantabe place has an interesting ambience. Theseating was good, the food good, once it got there. I went at lunch time and it was not busy and it took a long time. We only ordered salads. Maybe they were understaffed in the kitchen.

I really enjoy Starlite's new location -- the space is amazing, plus they have a great upstairs bar. I do miss brunch, though!

I've had the pleasure of dining @ starlite several times and I have to say, it is my favorite place to take people or suggest when asked for a dinner recommendation. True, it is a little pricey but definately worth it and even when the service is not exceptional (as is the case with ANY restaurant) the ambiance and food will make up for the wait. Try the spinich salad (unbelievable) or any other menu item and I know you'll agree. The drinks rock and are made with ONLY fresh juices/ingredients. I LOVE STARLITE and cannot recommend it enough.....

The food was excellent, but there was not enough of it. For $12, I expect more than 5 ravioli. Service was pathetic. Decor is nice, but it was loud (former Gilligan's location).

This was my fourth visit to Starlite. Never a disappointment, this most recent visit left my companion and myself in awe. We indulged in the Fried Oysters for an appetizer..superbly paired flavors and textures. The Maytag Salad was priceless; perfectly dressed. Both entrees were superb. The Ahi Tuna paired and a delicious cassoulet turned out to be the perfect marriage.
Our server was prompt, attentive but not obtrusive and provided helpful information in our choice of wine.
We would give the chef and the staff a standing ovation.

The food at Starlite is excellent! The portions are not huge. It was enough to fill me up but the protions were small for my husband. The setting can either be romantic or loud...depending on who else is dining. The dining rooms are small, it is an old house, after all. Dinner for two was over $100. This is a place we reserve for special occasions. Even though the food is wonderful, considering the portion size, Starlite is not an every day kind of place.

Imagine a middle aged family group, a group of 8 rather boisterous thirty somethings, and us..all in the size of a small bedroom.

I didnt know who to be more angered at...1. the restaurant for assuming that a couple would appreciate sitting in the lap of a group of rowdy's or 2. the fact that these people were out of hand.

Seems like they would know to NOT seat a couple next to a large group who will usually be loud by nature....

The food by far is the draw for me here. I am somewhat non impressed by the intimicy of the dining arrangement.

You have to remember you are eating in a small house so I guess you cant escape noise if its there...

All in all, service was good, food was good. Just be wary of your dining area :)

After hearing about Starlite for years, I finally was able to try it out for myself. The vegetarian lasagna was amazing. However, I thought that the portions were too small for the price. And I usually appreciate smaller portions, but when I'm shelling out $70, I'd like to leave with a full satisfied belly. It was really good, I just wanted more of it!

Out of a group of nine of us, only 4 were happy. The pork tenderloin was dry, we were given the wrong drinks (Makers Mark instead of Frangelico -surprise, ack!), and the bill was inaccurate, even after several revisions. Plus the SXSW-ers are made to sit outside and givin slow service. Very dissapointing.

I ordered the New York strip with fois gras butter and expected a fabulous meal. When the steak arrived, it was not a New York strip. IT WAS HALF OF A NEW YORK STRIP! What nerve. I guess if they said "1/2 New York strip" on their menu, nobody would order it!

I really want Starlite to be good but they just keep working against themselves. Though based on the numerous 10's on the Citysearch site I am sure diners will keep on going...though I am a little skeptical of anyone who rates restaurants 10's. I have eaten at Starlite 4 times and on each occasion the restaurant failed to deliver in at least two categories.

I think this is some of the best food in Austin. Yeah, it get's a little high-end, but hey, if you're pinching pennies, go to Luby's. But if you want to impress, seduce, or just eat fine faire, go to Starlite.

first impression: we were ignored by the hostess, had a reservation and still had to wait to be seated... kind of colored the whole evening. thankfully the waiter was pretty attentive and the food was good but I can't imagine we'll eat there again.

I was surprised to find such an uppity staff in Austin. When we arrived at the EMPTY restaurant after 6PM, we were snootily asked if we had a reservation. The female hostess/water person was quite nice, but the other staff members were far from Austin-friendly.

At first, the portions seemed extremely small, but they were quite adequate. However, the prices were NOT in line with the portions or the quality of the food. The food was good, but was certainly not spectacular and certainly didn't warrant the price per portion.

While I was excited to try this restaurant based on the reviews, it did not live up to the expectation and was definitely not worth $70 a person for a wee salad and a wee entree with 2 inexpensive glasses of wine.

Excellent food. Portions modestly sized. Menu changes often. The wait staff is one of the best in Austin. Starlite is FINE DINING. If only all restaurants were run this way... Small portions, take your time, 2 hours minimum to a meal, no rush, and leave with a full belly but never feeling bloated. If you love dining in, say, New York, Montreal, or France, this place is perfect for you. If you like a big, sloppy, and fast meal a la IHOP or Threadgills, go anyway and learn about a new, enriching way of eating.

Great restaurant with wonderful service. The waitstaff was there when you needed them but don't hover. The food was great and actually I think the portions were perfect. Usually most places serve WAY too much food. The pork was wonderful (and I am not a pork person). This place is trully an "Austin" place - off of 34th right near Guadalupe and UT campus - great location. Totally romantic. Only beef was the back room was a little warm and muggy - not venilated well.

my review of Wink can pretty much be transcribed for Starlite. Starlite is more romantic and the portions a bit smaller, but this is still one of my 5 favorite restaurants in Austin. The Degustation is always a winner.

Starlite is casual and hip. I haven't had a bad dinner or brunch here. Their portions are a little on the small-side; if you have a healthy appetite, be sure to order appetizers and dessert.

In Short
Although it started in a little house on 34th Street, Starlite has a similar vibe to the other elegant restaurants in the area: brick walls, bold carpet, dark wood chairs and linen tableclothes. A trendy, party crowd…
