Amrheins has been a Boston tradition since 1890. For over a century, diners throughout the city of Boston have been welcomed into Amrheins to enjoy quality meals amongst friends and neighbors. Today that tradition continues in our updated facility. Despite the renovations in 2005, Amrheins is still full of history. Amrheins is the proud home of the oldest hand carved bar in America and still has the first draft beer pump in Boston on display. But what makes Amrheins special is its dedication to quality cuisine and superior service and we are one of the few restaurants in Boston with plenty of off street parking. We hope that you enjoy your visit. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to enhance your experience.

Historic St. Patricks Day Venue

by Barbara E. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,059

Armheins is a Boston tradition that is coasting on its reputation. The best time to go is St. Patrick's Day for the traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage.

A very nice place

by David S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,979

Amrhein's is a dark-wood and leather sort of restaurant, not the sort of place I would bring the kids. Went there for lunch, the food was good but pricey. A nice place to go out with friends.

My friends and I went to dinner and a few drinks last night the place was great. I had the pumpkin risotto what a great treat. I couldn't get enough of it. Waitress was wonderful, chef came out to visit to see how our meal was, and cocktails were superb. Try this place it is great.

Chef should be ashamed of himself!

by Sodon30

my wife and I met up with some friends last sunday, and we were greeted with a very attentive and friendly waitress. my friends order was a little tricky, however, the waitress took everything down, and went over it again. When our food was delivered, it was practically the opposite of how she had asked for it. Our waitress appologized, and then chef came out, and walked away from us, when we told him how unhappy we were with the meal. When the bill came, they had not even taken one drink off, after we had clearly stated how unhappy we were with the meal. When asked to speak with the chef again, he blew up in our faces, told us that "sorry mistakes happen" then walked away from us. the poor waitress' looked horrified, and kept apologizing for him. This sad pathetic little man should not even work at burger king. UNBELIEVABLE!

Pros: waitress

Cons: everything else

Why I love Amrhein's....

by Courtney09

I go to Amrhein's 3 times a week because the service and delicious food keep me coming back for more. With delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts to choose from at reasonable prices, you can't beat it. The friendly atmosphere with big screen TVs, great service, awesome music,a full bar, and their great martini list are always a treat for me during the week and on the weekends. If you are looking for a good restaurant to feel comfortable at and enjoy yourself, I highly reccomend Amrhein's in South Boston.

Brunch is amazing

I am in Amrheins it least three times a week. Take the family to Brunch almost every sunday and never disappointed. It is well worth the money! It is a great place to take the wife out to eat and with friends for drinks. Service was top of the line. Can't wait till the patio opens up again!

Pros: off street parking ,amazing service

Surprised they didn't try the magic check game

by neillc

Stickly a neighborhood joint from asking around. Beware if they think you are a tourist. Ordered a rum and pineapple, got water downed pineapple juice that tasted like butterscotch. Entree was lobster pie that sounded good but turned out to be small pieces of lobster sitting ontop of some kind of gluey uncooked dough in the bottom of the dish. The dish arrived at the table unfinished.

Asked for the manager. The server returned from the kitchen and produced his card and told us we would have to call him???

Amazing in every way!!!

by tricia1278

I go to Amrheins at least 2-3 times a week. The Sunday Brunch is out of this world! There are so many different options to choose from. The service is always top notch! I've been in the industry for many years now - so I am very picky. I absolutely LOVE the chicken bella bocca (on the dinner menu) and all the salads and sandwiches served at lunch are sooo gooood! I've also been to Amrheins for a few different private events and they always do an outstanding job with everything.

I would definitely recomment Amrheins to anyone - for any occassion!

Pros: Free off street parking, food, service

Cons: NONE

head up to east broadway....this is not worth stopping for

by edcorcoran

Stopped in on Thursday night (10/9/08) at 6.30pm to meet my wife for dinner after work.
Knew it was a mistake as soon as I walked in, table was dirty and overall it looked like an cheap bar-room

I decided to have the meat loaf special ($18.00) not cheap but price is never a consideration, if the food is good, wife opted for risotto.

Onion rings as a starter was not too bad..7 out of 10.
Main course of risotto was appetising and was served hot....6 out of 10
Meat loaf was a disaster and served luke warm with cold french fries and green substance described as peppers? One bite was enough.....1 out of 10.
Waitress returned after my wife finished her risotto to inquire how the food was..we expressed our disappointment and after informing the "chef", we were told he was busy but the next time we were in, we could have a complimentary dessert........I don't think so!!!!

I went to Amrheins for the first time on saturday afternoon with a larger group of people that have been before. The food was excellent!! I had the lobster pie and the rasberry goat cheese salad. We all enjoyed our food very much. I was also very impressed with the service we recieved. Server Melissa did a great job and should be praised for service to us. I am new to the area and will be coming back for dinner soon!

AVIOD THIS PLACE

by dolphin52

I was there this weekend and the food was terrible!! The chef should be ashamed of him self for swearing the way he does the whole dining room could hear him just want I want my child to hear while we are eating dinner not to mention an expensive one at that! I wasn't impressed with the bathroom either, I thought this place was fairly new??? What a dump?. The waitress was just ok they stand around talking to eachother like it's a reunion, do your job how hard is it to get someone more water (in a dirty glass)??!?!? I asked to speak to someone about the situation and the girl told me someone would be right over but no one every came by and the owner is right in the other room, good way to run a business idiot!!!! I will never go back to that place... I'd rather eat up the street in Burger King!!!!!!!!

all around great place

by MrsPatSmith

I have a lunch meeting at Amrhein's last week and we were there a while. The staff was wonderful the host seated us at a large table by the windows. We were greated by our waitress Karen, who was a lovely lady. We did some work and were served our lunches not long after ordering, I had a salad with steak tip it was to die for and to big to finish. We sat a while doing some more work and then had dessert and coffee. We were not rushed even though it was getting busy for lunch. Karen was there several times to check on us and make sure we had full drinks. It was a great lunch and I will bring more clients there and if the weather stays nice we might even sit outside.

Pros: off street parking, wonderful people working there

bad food, bad service, bad atmosphere.........

by traveler75

The food in this place is over priced, horrible, garbage. I had a stomach ache for the entire night after eating there, the service was awful from the bartender to the hostess to the waitress, everything about the place sucked. To top it all off I even knocked my head off the ceiling going down the stairs to the restroom, and I am not all that tall. Sitting outside looking at the police take people into the station or the lovely gas station across the street makes me wonder what type of moron operates this place. Who would actually sit people outside in a crappy setting like that and expect to hear good things about it? There are much better places all over South Boston and around Boston in general, I'd rather pay a few bucks to park than deal with the disgusting atmosphere in this place or ever eat that horrible food again. Way to go morons, you screwed this place up permanentely.

Pros: i lived through it

Cons: everything about the place

Overpriced, poor food despite good atmoshphere

by bostonfoodman

Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I've eaten at Amherien's at least 5 times in the last year, and have been thoroughly disappointed with the quality and price of food, and the service. From the chicken finger appetizers (bigger portion in McDonald's 4 piece nugget box) to brunch (overcooked eggs benedict tasting an hour old) to bland ribs, their food is just very very very disappointing. It's too bad, because the atmosphere is great, and the bartenders do a great job preparing drinks. But, at the end of the day, the food is lacking in all areas.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Food and Price

WOW! Very poor! I miss the Quiet Man!!

by TommieC

We were pretty bummed out about the overall service.

First time- we ate in the restauraunt and the food was great and service was better. We tried the take out and we waited 48 minutes, our order was wrong and the "Owner" yelled at my wife and then called back to basically give us a hard time.

The bartender was awesome but unfortunately we won't be back. We try hard to patronize Southie restaurants and bars. We are from here! This was just bad and we are bummed out at the attitude that we received. Very disappointed and we won't be back. CF Donvans is a little drive but so much better.

Great Dinner, Great Service

by logy40

I went to Amrheins the other night with my girlfriend, it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We have been to Amrheins before and always had a good meal but that was all it was, a good meal. This night happened to be one of the better. I had the Maple Glazed Pork special, it was out of this world. My girlfriend had the Chicken Bella Bocca. Our waitress Meg recommended both meals, she claimed the Bella Bocca was her favorite dish on the menu, now, it is also one of my girlfriends favorites. Meg made our night even more enjoyable, with her pleasant smile and great sense of humor, we laughed as well as ate. If you are looking for a comfortable, warm, friendly place to have a delicious dinner and great drinks, then I recommend giving Amrheins a shot. Between the delicious food and great service, we will be back to Amrheins again very soon.

Pros: Great Service, from the Hostess to the waitress to the bartenders, very warm, friendly and comfortable

Cons: Music A Little Loud, Chef Very Loud

Wonderful service, bad meal

by BillVO12

I have worked in the service industry for a while now, and I love comming to Amrheins with my family. A few nights ago for the first time, I had a very unpleasent meal. However, our server Hanna was excellent. We have had her before and have always enjoyed her. She is very funny, friendly, and professional. The other night, she quickly ran off to get the manager and they came over and spoke with us, and then took care of the entire meal!!! I was very surprised! I look forward to eating there again, hopefully with a better meal!!!!

Terrible

by LisaZZZZ

I used to come to Amrheins when is USED to be modestly priced comfort foods with great service - not anymore! Poor service, but the food is the real shame. I had the Pork ribs which were such a waste - the sauce tasted like dishwater - I couldn't get through 2 bites. My husband's meal was equally awful. I have had take out one other time since the reopening and it was equally awful. Talk about messing with a good thing - never eating there again (previously at least twice a month). Plenty of other good restaurants to justify not going to this one anymore.

Cons: Everything else

Excellent service in Kelley's section!

by ziggysmom

We decided to try Amrhein's restaurant for lunch but were pressed for time. We let our server Kelley know as soon as we sat down.
Kelley was very pleasant and even though the restaurant was very busy she took the time to go over the menu with us and mentioned her favorite entrees.
We both decided to go with the clam chowder which was out of this world delicious! My husband had the pulled pork sandwich and I had the ficsh n' chips.
We were so happy with our selections and Kelley was really instrumental in expediting our lunch swiftly.
We will be back to Amrhein's restaurant and will definately return to Kelley's section.

Thank you, Kelley.

I'm not one to usually write into these websites, but Amrhein's is consistently a great experience and deserves my 5 stars. The seafood alfredo and the surf and turf are awesome. The restaurant is comfortable and upbeat. My waitress was very sweet and the bar area is a great place for an after dinner drink. One more thing...get the banana bread pudding.

IN LOVE WITH THE NEW NEW MENU

by bsoxguy

I went to Amrheins after the reopening and it was good but nothing special. Just last week me and three of my pals decided to head out for dinner and drinks. WOW did they improve the menu by ten fold. Its much bigger and the aps are so tasty. I asked the waitress why the new menu, aside the obvious, and she said there was a new head chef. Well this chef is right on point and if you don?t believe me just try the cowboy steak. The lot takes the stress off finding a spot to park and this is where we?ll be watching the pats this fall.

Pros: Newer Menu and Parking lot

Cons: If you cant see the big screen

bad service

by asrutherford

I've been a waitress before, so I'm pretty easy on waitresses-- especially during the lunch rush. However, there's no excuse for our waitress today. Our waitress totally forgot to get my mother's Diet Coke, and was nowhere to be found when my mother was looking around to give her a reminder. So when the waitress dropped off the check my mother just said, "forget about the soda I ordered". She apologized, but then proceeded to be downright nasty when she came back to the table to get correct change for the bill. I'd seriously reconsider ever going there again.

Pros: located in spot where there are few good sit-down restaurants nearby

Cons: service, no vegetarian food

We used to go every sunday last fall to enjoy the brunch and watch all the football games on their big screen TV's and can't wait for next week for the patriots first game and for the season to start. My family went in to grab a quick bite to eat after family gathering. The staff was very friendly from the time we entered the door. We were very pleased with the variety of the new menu and the quality of the food. Our food was delivered quickly and every bit was excellent. The huge portions of food made it impossible to have room for dessert. So next time we come we are leaving room to try one. It was a good experience and I would recommend it to any one who wants to sit and relax and have a great meal.

Cheap No-Name soda????

by capemoose

I signed up on this site just to post my opinion of Amrheins. --------

We visited on a Friday afternoon. Started out with "Coke" and "Diet Coke" sodas (as they didn't have iced tea). Our "Cokes" were flat and tasted terrible with a hint of chlorine. I asked if the local water tasted chloriney stating that the soda was terrible. The waitress said they use a NO NAME BRAND OF SODA!! I couldn't believe it! -------- She came back with a water replacement for my husband and nothing for me!! I let it go. -------- Do Coke or Pepsi brands cost so much money? It's been a VERY long time since I've been at a restaurant using no name or off brands. If they are skimping on soda, they are skimping on other things as well. If I were dining alone that day I would have left at that point. --------

Food arrived. My chicken parmigiana was shameful and texture was similar to microwaved. Pasta was a bit undercooked. Hubby said his steak tips were just okay. Based on price, the menu and atmosphere, the portions and presentation was not what I expected. -------

It's a shame, we only go into Boston about 3 times a year and my husband was really looking forward taking me to Amrheins as he grew up in the area. I kept my opinion to myself until now. ----------

I would definitely NOT go back.

Pros: Nice atmosphere

Cons: Cheap no-name sodas... chicken parm taste & texture was like microwaved

Best Steakburger or Tips

by jacjr

My wife and I have been frequently eating out lately, trying some new places and we both agreed that Amrheins has been overall the best. From the moment we arrive (Parking is a Plus). Whether it?s just the two of us, or with our four children we are treated with impeccable service, which we find is often hard to find at Boston restaurants. The food is delicious and well presented. I would recommend the steak, burger or steak tips (voted Boston?s Best). All in all, the restaurant has a great atmosphere, a beautiful bar with big screen TV?s great for sports, a little loud for me or our favorite the quiet side (Curley room), reasonable prices, and all that it takes to be one of our favorite places!

Pros: Parking

Oh my Goodness! The best Sunday Brunch I've ever had. The Eggs Benedict...to die for. What an assortment of fresh breakfast items and desserts. I just had to keep getting up to try more things. I would highly recommend this brunch to anyone who asks. I've been to many an upscale restaurant brunch and they don't compare to the good food and value you get when you go to Amhreins. Bringing Brunch Back....

by popina

Finding a good quality buffet brunch now a days is as easy as finding a honest politician on Washington. This past Sunday I found myself at Amrheins for their "famous brunch" and let me tell you....I have found the needle in the haystack. WOW! The food assortment had the most variety I have ever seen and after two trips up I still had not tried everything there was to eat.

Amrheins Brunch...the best bet for your buck!!!

It's about time.....

by mommabetty

After waiting quite some time to re-visit Amrheins since the renovations I decided to make it a night out and see if it was as good as before. Well quite frankly, it was all I expected and fantastically more. I almost walked out of the restaurant because of the amazing reconstruction. The main room was bright, wide open and energetic and had 3 big televisions scattered around the room (something my sports-nuts husband loved).

After sitting at the bar for a drink served by a boisterous young man who made us feel like we were at Cheers and everyone knew our name we got moved to the Dining Room. The menu was quite diffferent; it had all the new twists and turns of a fancy uptight restaurant but still had the down-home prices of the old Amrheins. The food was PHENOMINAL, it asked the waitress about almost every meal that passes our table. I decided on the Chicken Pot-Pie and my husband got the steak, and I can sum up our meal in three words....TO DIE FOR!!!

Overall, this was a great date night place for me and my husband and also some place I would take my kids and feel just as comfortable. Our next trip there can't come soon enough!!!

Old World Class...with a New Look

by viningirl

I have going to Amhreins since I was sitting in highchairs. 27 years later it is still one of my favorite places in the Boston area to visit. I went this weekend after hearing it had re-opened. I was amazed at the incredible renovations that were done but loved that the Curley Room still had the cozy at home feeling.

The food was one of the best meals I had in a long time. The waitress was courteous and attentive but not overbearing. She was helpful in my decision making process since the new menu had more choices for me than I could hope for. I finally decided on the steak tips and I now know why they were named Best of Boston; cooked to perfection and 100% delicious!! Word to the wise...save room for dessert the Boston Cream Pie was ecstacy on a plate.

All in all I think that Amhreins is one of the most under-rated restaurants not only in Southie but in the Boston area. Definitely worth my trip from Medford!!!

After walking around Castle Island we were hungry! My friend suggested Amrhein's and we were not disappointed. We both had the steak tips which were excellent! We then split a tira misu which was to die for! Our server's name was Kelly and she couldn't have been friendlier or more accomodating. The food, service and atmosphere is top notch. We will be back for lunch and will be sure to request Kelly's section.

Dissappointed Again

by souz1974

I've tried the new Amrheins a handful of times since it reopened and each time it gets worse. I will not be back again. Two women cooks are out in dining room talking with friends and taking shots while my wife and I wait 30 min for our food which when it arrived was not good or prepared the way I asked. Total lack of respect for the customer. There are much better places to spend your money! Go elsewhere.

Great place to eat and have some drinks!!!!

by shoes7000

Amrheins Restaurant is our favorite restaurant to go to in South Boston. The Steak Tips are one of the best in the area. The atmosphere has changed from an almost dive eatery to a great place to bring family and friends, not to upscale, just comfortable. The parking lot next to it is key for an easy transition to get in and out. The prices are resonable and the waitstaff are very nice. The Plasmas are great to watch the Sox games!
I would recommend this place to almost anyone!

Best comfort food in the city

by bosox04

This place is great. I took some friends there for a few drinks before going out to eat. The bar is the nicest in the city, hand carved. The bartender was great and the drinks were even better. We took a look at the menu and ended up ordering food after we canceled our reservations at another restaurant. The food is very reasonably priced and it was great. My friends loved it and this is our starting point from now on any time we go out.

Thank heavens for the owner putting his best employee back at the door!!! It makes such a difference when there is some class standing at the front door. Food was ok. The chef needs to chill out because I made a comment about something on the menu to my waitress (Julie-sweet deserved her tip) and I heard the chef tell her to tell me to go somewhere else if that is what I wanted. I was very insulted but decided to stay. Great atmosphere & look. Fun bartenders but a little too loud on that side too early. Overall I'd go again. There's always room for improvement...Steven knows that.

Pros: Decor, hostess , steak,bartenders

Cons: a couple loud waiters, chef, cost

AWFUL

by sobogirl

I was born and raised in South Boston and have been going to Amrheins as far back as I can remember. Amrheins was always the "neighborhood" restaurant but not anymore. I have been down there numerous times to give it a chance and it was a total waste of money. It's overpriced, one of the worst meals I have ever had, and the service was HORRIFIC.

Are you kidding me?

the bartender appartantly had better things to do than be polite to customers. I asked to see a menu and she acted as if she was fetching one, then returned and said, "kitchen closes at ten, and when they close, they're done" never at 9:57 have i been heard such a rejection when there were people sitting right next to me STARTING on their salads...so i can handle the kitchen being closed, but - then, as my friend and i sat and were enjoying conversation and our first drinks (after a long day for both of us) our empty glasses just sat there, as if marooned on a desert beach - and she finally asked if we were "all set" at this point it wasnt even 10:30.
not sure if i am going to return to find out if the food is good or not.

Pros: Nice bar

Cons: service
