After encountering a problem with the restaurant, I asked to speak to the manager to resolve the problem. She was rude, unprofessional, and told me she didn't care about the fact she was breaking a law because she needed to pay rent. I refuse to give this type of establishment my business.

We were guests at a birthday brunch for 50 people on Sunday. It was called for 11 am but except for cocktails, there was no sign of food till noon. We were quite hungry by then. The buffet table was ample but the dour people standing behind it (two men who looked like they belonged to the Mafia) glared if you took time deciding what to select. They also didn't allow us to help ourselves. The poached salmon and couscous were good but the quiche was undercooked and runny, as were the made-to-order omelets. When I asked for a cup of tea during the meal, I was told it wouldn't be served until dessert time. I have never before encountered a restaurant that refused to serve a hot drink during a meal! Finally when the fancy but tasteless desserts were served, there were 2 small urns for coffee and a pitcher of pre-brewed, not-very-hot tea. And when my friend wanted another cup of coffee, the table and urns had disappeared well before 3 pm when the event was to conclude. I can't believe that this restaurant charges such high prices for such terrible service. I'll never go there again, even as a guest.

Went there last night for the first time and it was a great place. We went on a Tuesday night the and terrace was not busy so me a my girlfriend got a table right by the edge. I personally feel that Terrace in the Sky is probably one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC. I went with the regular menu and everything was cooked well and the ingredients were awesome. If you plan on going try the calamantra pasta, it had the most unbelievable shrimp. The waiter was very professional and made the experience so much better, gave good recommendations and provided world class service. Definitely would recommend it to any couple.

I went there with my husband for restaurant week lunch hoping for the great view people talk about. Turned out the deck was not available and we ended up in an ancient greenhouse overlooking the roofs of Harlem. The food was terrible. It started out okay with appetizers but my entree was absolutely horrible. The fish was undercooked and all tasted like olive brine. After complaining I was offered another meal. I picked risotto which was surprisingly worse. Even the fruit tart was so stale that you were unable to cut it with the fork. All together I didn't eat anything and left hungry short $60. Overall the worst restaurant experience in my life.

This restaurant has amazing views of Manhattan. There are also great dinner specials and brunch specials. You might want to book in advance though, because the place can fill up. It is pretty expensive.

Hands down, the view is gorgeous. Let me get that out of the way first because it was the big selling point, the wow factor of our wedding, and really made the whole night "magical." BUT, the planning process was nerve racking. They are very laissez faire about details and it becomes hard to pin them down on specifics. For example, I was told that there was a spare apt. in the building underneath (it is the top floor of student housing for Columbia) for the bridal party to change. More like a tiny little room with a bathroom (I had 12 people in my bridal party--7 bridesmaids, my maid of honor/flower girl, 4 hostesses and me) and it was a disaster. Not sure all the hors d'ouevres were ever served. They tried to charge a $4 pp cake cutting fee (which we simply refused to pay) and basically were completely unprepared on the day of. Several things I had asked for were not done, and on the day of the wedding, the event coordinator turned out to be someone I had never met before in my life. The person I had been regularly communicating with was nowhere to be found, and never mentioned anyone else would be there. This, of course, is all from a bride's perspective, one who had carefully planned out all the details of her wedding. To my guests, the venue was nothing short of amazing, so...you may be stressed out, but your guests will be in awe.

Pros: Beautiful view, indoors and out, good food,

Cons: A little too lacking in service for such a high price

Go here for one thing: the views. My sister got married here years ago and it would still be a beautiful place for an event. You'd would never expect to find a jewel in this Columbia University area. Be prepared to pay top price for top location and luxurious dining ambiance. Some do say that the food and service can be inconsistent.

A group of us were celebrating a birthday and looking forward to fabulous views and fine dining. A couple of us had checked the website beforehand and noted the prix fixe dinner for $45. When we inquired we were first told there was no prix fixe, then we were told that it was $55, and then we were told that it only included "chicken" (uttered in disgust) and not the other items mentioned on the website. We chose a bottle of white wine from the wine list for $36 and enjoyed it enough to ask for another. We were then told that there was a "mistake" on the wine list and were shown the same page but with the $36 crossed out and $45 written in. They said they would charge us the lower price for the first bottle but that they would charge the higher "correct" price for a second bottle! As far as the food was concerned, the asparagus appetizer was okay, but the guinea hen I ordered at $36 for the entree was beyond overcooked and inedible. However, two of our group enjoyed their fish, and the blueberry cobbler was pretty good.

Oh yeah, gorgeous views. But the disdain that I felt from the staff after we inquired about the prix fixe dinner was unsettling. With "prices in the sky" at Terrace in the Sky one expects hospitable and attentive service and exceptional food - not the overpriced, mediocre food served by snobs. I don't know what happened to Terrace in the several years since I was last there (and had nice dining experiences), but I'm not going back.

We had a tiny wedding scheduled for Saturday June 14th and from the beginning had communication problems with their event planner. We paid for 1/2 hour of passed hors'deouvres (6 hot, 4 cold) and we didn't get all of them - we were supposed to have wait staff for the drinks - it took my husband 15 minutes to track someone down to get him a cocktail. The food was good - however, I thought a wedding cake was included and we never saw one!. The air conditioning was not on for part of the time, my daughter had to ask them to keep it on, it was so muggy in the Greenhouse room. It was NOT a great experience and we would not reccomend having an event there.

Having lived in New York City for 10 years and a person who regularly dines out, this is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in New York. This place is completely over rated. We arrived for our 7pm reservation exactly on time. The restaurant was not set up and wasn't even seating. We stood there with 15 other guests while they set the tables. No one came over to explain or apologize. We all stood there wondering what was going on. You would have thought they would have offered people a drink while we waited; even a glass of water given it was such a hot day, but nothing, not even an explanation. There was a wedding in the room next door and the music and PA was blasting through the public restaurant. To cap it off, it was my wife's birthday and I had called in and requested a table with a nice view, which I was told they would honor. Even though tables were available they sat us in the middle of the room. When I asked for a better table, I was told 'you get what we have'. Needless to say, we got up and left. No one even bothered to ask why we were leaving or what the problem was as we left. I have never written a review online before but felt compelled to let people know about this terrible place, especially given it is up town and you don?t have many options if you leave. I am happy to say we got a table at Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental hotel at Time Warner Center. There was no comparison - the food was amazing, service outstanding and the views were even better. My tip is go there, not the Terrace/Dump in the Sky.

I highly recommend this restaurant but first you must be ready for a few things. This is old world restaurant....romantic because the views are amazing. Not since the Windows of the World have I felt the pure extent of the Manhattan skyline. It is more intimate since you feel slightly hovered above New York City. The wait staff is attentive but not annoying. There is something cheesy about the place but that is what makes it great. Not cheap but well worth the experience. This is a good place to go if you want the opposite of trendy.

April 2006
My wife an I had our wedding ceremony and dinner afterward in the greenhouse. The food was wonderful and service first rate. We had dinner twice before with the same results, wonderful dining worth every penny.
The problem was the management was indifferent to our requests .Example: we choose Hors d??uvre at a tasting but none of our choices appeared on our wedding day . On the afternoon of our wedding there was construction going on outside of the green house, again the owner was indifferent.
Pros great for dinner
Con not the place for a wedding

I went to Terrace in the Sky yesterday with some friends of mine, for the Restaurant week. We had a table at 10pm. Everybody arrived a little late (some problems finding the place). It was 10.15pm and the main waiter almost yelled at us, saying they close the kitchens at 10pm. OK, we were 20 minutes late, but you don't take reservations at 10pm if you close the kitchens at 10pm! The rest of the dinner, the waiters kept hurrying us, and were not really nice. The food was quite good, true, but the atmosphere unpleasant. We were of course the last in the restaurant, and our waiter had already changed into shorts and flip flops when he brought us our check! Then, as we were in the elevator, he asked us if the food was good, but then said "Next time, be on time!".
So even if the food is good and it has a great view, I don't recommend it at all, as I've never seen such a rude service, insulting the clients.

I ate here with my boyfriend and the service, atmosphere, and food are all mediocre at best. The gaudy dining room decor and the boring menu need a serious facelift. Granted, the view is nice -- but that alone won't bring me back.

The service is really stuffy and apparently has a curfew because by 10:15 the place turned into a morgue, despite their being a handful of customers still dining. They turned off the music as we were still eating, pressured us to order dessert as we were still enjoying our $120 worth of wine, started folding tablecloths at other tables, and did just about everything possible to get us to leave. Don't accept 9:00 reservations if you're not going to give me some time to sit back and dine. It was extremely off-putting and I will not go back.

Went here last night for dinner for Rest. Wk. and was pleasantly surprised. After being dropped off by the cab on Morningside ave instead of Morningside drive we finally made it. I have to admit, after stepping out into the elevator I was a little taken aback by the gaudy decor, reminded me very much of Tavern on the Green. So on to the food, they offered:

Appetizer choices:
tomato salad & mozzarella
Chilled cream corn soup
Mesclun salad

Entree choices:
hamachi
Angus sirloin
risotto w/ vegetables
Organic chicken

Sorry I couldn't remember details on this either but I had the tomato salad & mozzarella (quite tasty) and the risotto (came out piping hot and the portion was huge but it was very good). I also ordered the Tartar of Hawaiian Blue-Fin Toro w/ cucumber, Mango and Ponzu Vinaigrette which was delicious, nice and spicy though I felt like I was eating a spicy tuna roll w/out the rice. My bf got the chilled cream corn soup which was ok to taste but I don?t think I could?ve eaten a whole bowl of it. he also got the angus sirloin which was very good but the corn salsa that it came w/ was way too spicy bc it had too much jalape?os in it. for dessert I ordered the raspberry panacotta and he got the warm chocolate cake, both decent but nothing to rave about. All in all I think it was a good deal for the food though keep in mind that tartar was $24, pretty much the price of an entree. Don?t think I would go back just bc I think the prices are way too high and I didn?t think it was worth it. yea the view was nice but nothing spectacular. Service was a bit old and stuffy as well.

Wow!! Everything was great from service to the dinning experience. I would recommend this restaurant to any one who eats at the top restaurants in NYC. This truly is a special place to take friends, family, and a romantic date as well. The whole experience was a night to remember.

Where to begin... I took my boyfriend for his first NYC Xmas eve to this recommended restaurant. I asked for a window table when I booked and the hostest took us to a table in the center of the room. When I told her about the request she seemed annoyed and very cold and seated us by a window with no view. On their website there was alot of excitement over their wine list. It wasn't even offered to us. I had to ask for it half way through our appetizer. The waiter came back past our table 3 times eventually bringing it. We were then left alone for the entire meal. We had to pour our own wine, never given more water and never checked on to see if the food was ok. Our empty plates sat in front of us for awhile while we waited for anyone to come over to the table. If this had been a diner I would have expected this but this is suppose to be a fine dining experience. We told our waiter to just bring us the check so we could leave telling him we would not be having desert. 5 minutes later another waiter came over with the desert menu. The lack of communication was ridiculous. The place wasn't even busy. There were at least 4 or 5 empty tables and in a place that size that means they were not busy.
I still can't believe that such a 'fine dining' restaurant had such horrible service, especially on xmas eve. the food was good but honestly we could not enjoy it.

Fiance and I went here for our anniversary. The neighborhood isn't as bad I some folks had mentioned. Walked into a wonderful experience. Good food presented in an elegant manner. Was a little disappointed with the service though. Harp was a great touch. I also thought it was a great value for the food and ambiance. Would recommend for special occassion dining for a group as it's a great New York City experience.

The setting is beautiful; the food is to be avoided at all costs. We went here for Restaurant Week and were looking forward to it. The menu of a lettuce salad, and then chicken or salmon, was uninspired to say the least and meager at the most, and the waiter basically threw the dishes at people. Did I mention we both got sick from the food? All night? Very disappointing experience.

Went here for Restaurant Week last night and had a fabulous time. The service could not have been better, the food was yummy - even though the portions were very small (not sure if it's due to restaurant week), the harp player was great as background music, the $36 bottle of wine was good, the view of the GWB was nice. I think this would be a good place for a romantic night out as the prices are a bit steep so it's not good for an all the time thing. Ask for a seat outside where they have a live band if the weather is good or in the fully enclosed glass room for a better view than what we had.

Went here for Restaurant Week last night and had a fabulous time. Pros: Service, good food, view

Cons: Price, location-good, safe area but close to "bad" area

Went for brunch and was extremely disappointed. The view is lovely, and the outdoor terrace is a terrific place for a drink in the warm weather, but do yourself a favor and don't dine here. The quality of the food is average, and the service is pathetic!
When my 100 year old grandmother asked for potatoes instead of the rice side that came with her chicken, the waiter said, "we only serve potatoes with the steak." What?! I ordered a bellini and they made it with peach schnapps instead of peach juice. We had to specifically ask the waiters to refill our water glasses, to take away the cluster of unused wine glasses crowding the table, etc, etc. Lots of little things that added up to a large frustration. It's not very expensive, but it still isn't worth it.

Disregard some of these negative reviews. I have lived on the upper west side for 25 years and have been to this restaurant on several occasions and always left impressed. Firstly, The space is beautiful and most importantly the food is awesome. I was recently there for my anniversary and indulged in the tasting menu. My wife and I sampled everthing from duo of venison to an amazing diver sea scallop dish. The food was thoughtfully presented and tasted magnificent. They also had an amazing selection of Cheese and wine. We dine out at least twice a week and really appreciate a good meal and this place does not dissapoint.

I went to Terrace in the Sky during Restaurant Week. I'd been there once before for a reception and the finger food had been quite good. But my second visit during lunchtime last week was disappointing. First, it was way too bright indoors due to excessive sunlight. My friends and I were squinting at each other during the entire meal. Second, the service was far from impressive. Our waiter was perfectly nice, but each course was preceded by a loooong wait. Third, the food was not great... the white bean soup appetizer was tasty enough, but the vegetable risotto entree I got was below average. I actually left half of it on my plate - something I rarely do. I don't know if the restaurant put in less effort because we were just there for Restaurant Week, but in any case I will not be returning there any time soon.

Pay them a visit. The staff was cordial and knowledgable. Romantic candle lit tables with roses made my 19th wedding anniversary dinner excellent. The food was perfectly presented and delicious. Live music played on a harp was the icing for me. Use the tasting option for the chef's selection for novices such as myself.

I went to this restaurant one night after work and it was horrible. First it was really expensive for average food I could've made at home. Second, the view was of the projects - nothing nice to look at. Third, the waiter had an attitude. Lastly, the decor was stuffy and was better suited for elderly people. I was not impressed at all. There are tons of better restaurants in New York. Don't even waste your time.

Cons: boring food, expensive, poor service

I was dragged here by someone, the person in charge of picking Terrace blew everything out of proportion. I was promised a view, good food, service and nice decor/ambience. Boy was she wrong, the menu/food was poorly executed. The view wasn't that much breath taking. It WAS romantic...and the only saving throw for this restaurant. But you can't just feast on just romantic atmosphere can you? There are way more "romantic" restaurants in new york city and I feel I was lied to after going to Terrace. This restaurant isn't what it is hyped up to be.

The food was excellent and so was the service. I went there with my wife and the ambiance was just perfect for a nice romantic dinner. We will definitely go back again, and this time we will be bringing friends.

This lovely restaurant is a slice of NYC. Yes, it's inconvenient and it's at the top of a Columbis U dorm, but once you get there, it's gorgeous. The views are wonderful and the food is innovative, well prepared and not trendy at all. If you want trendy people and food, go downtown. I've been there many times in the last 20 years and it's still the same... GREAT in all areas. Great place for a private party. I got married there last year and incorporated the terrace into the ceremony and all the guests had a wonderful time.

Wonderful ambience, and a beautiful view of Manhattan. Sad part: Service was poor. Asking for spoons to stir our coffee brought dirty looks from our attendants. While the brunch could certainly be a great bargain, and the food was actually pretty good, receiving bad service all around was just not worth it. The restaurant only had 5 tables to serve, ours being the largest. I would think that we would have received stellar service. This place would be wonderful if the service was better. The wait staff absolutely bring down the value of such a beautiful find in the city. And it would behoove the owner/manager to either re-train his staff to deliver smile with a service; or to hire new new ones. It's not any easy job, but at least make your guests feel welcome and respected!!!!

I strongly disagree with several of the previous member reviews. I have been to this restaurant at least 10 times for business and it has never failed to impress. First, the food has always been fresh, refined, and consistent. I have never seen a dish fail or see a diner disappointed. Second, the service has always been professional and attentive. Third, you can actually get a resrvation without jumping through hoops of fire! Fourth, compared to many other upscale restaurants, the price is reasonable(3 courses+wine+tip<$80/person). I'm so tired of paying $200/person for questionable food at places that make you beg for the privilage to dine.I rate this place "highly recommeded" because, within its genre, it always remains a safe bet.

I went to Terrace in the Sky during Summer 2004 Restaurant Week. Getting to the restaurant was difficult and unpleasant as you had to drive through a bad neighborhood. The ambiance inside the restaurant is spectacular with the large window views (althougth it overlooks an unimpressive surrounding). Service and food is excellent. A bit pricey for fine dining in its location.

My Family of 5 went for New Years Eve...The view was wonderful, band was great, food was quite good considering the amount of people. The service was possibly the worst I've ever had. It took an hour for us to order, another hour and 15 min to get our entree's I had to go to the bar to order my champange, and carry it back myself, the waiter got our entrees mixed up and placed them in the wrong place and sat there and watched me switch them around...and worst of all it took so long to bring my mother a fork, we had to share one fork between us to eat our entrees, the service was horrendous, for $175 a head, they should be able to afford a decent wait staff!!!!

While the food wasn't that bad, everything else left much to be desired. The hostess gave us the wrong directions, the waitstaff has not been trained properly and the view of the Bronx is not cute. Don't bother going all the way uptown to this place, it's not worth the trip.

I don't know what some of the reviewers are talking about. I have eaten everywhere from Gramercy Tavern to Nobu to LeCirque and the food at the Terrace is as good if not better. If you don't get a window table, it isn't the end of the world!! Now that the greenhouse is open, you can enjoy the views there. When in season try the white truffle tasting menu for a pure treat. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I personally recommend spending the xtra $ and going with a tasting menu. You WILL NOT be dissapointed. This is a truely incredible night on the town. Once it gets a little warmer out, take your date and a glass of vino out on the open terrace and you have view of the entire tri-state area.

I was expecting the handwritten sign by the elevator, so it was not a big deal.

The ambiance and the decor were exquisite. I love the harp, so the fact that they have a live harp was a mesmerizing experience. The views are great. The service impeccable. The Food was excellent.
The wine recommendations were perfect. Taking my wife to this place made me seem like I now the finer things in life.

beautiful setting and interior. Frankly, I was a little nervous going so far uptown, but it had been recommended by someone I trusted.... The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The service was pleasant and attentive and they were happy to call a car for our party after we dined to ensure we made our curtain time. I would especially recommend this for a special occasion. When I took my mother she loved it!

Last night, my boyfriend and I dined here in celebration of my birthday on a Tuesday evening. We had a wonderful meal. From the first glimpse of our table to the bonus sweets we received, an evening unsurpassed. Yes, there was a handwritten sign near the elevator button. Yes the harpist was heavenly. The staff was attentive, friendly, and even sweet. The view was not breathtaking, the lights did twinkle and added to the ambience. Oh yes, the food was delicious. Overall, we loved it and are glad we spent our evening there. I recommend it highly.

Upon the recommendation of a friend and positive reviews, we went to Terrace to celebrate my husband's birthday. What an awful experience. The lobby of the building made me feel like walking into a dorm. I almost laughed seeing the hand-written note taped near that elevator button that instructed us to use that elevator. The maitre'd was cold and dazed. The view was cluttered and unspectacular - all you see is lights past the window. Don't bother treking over there.

I made the reservation 3 weeks in advance of my anniversary and was assured a table by the windows. I called to confirm my table location the day of. When we arrived, we were seated in the back (no view). We ordered a botlle of wine. Not only did it not come until after our appetizers, it came halway through our main course, and only after numerous requests. The service was rushed and the food was OK but not worth the price. To top it off, the toilets were overflowing and there were no hand towels. MAJOR DISSAPPOINTMENT.
