Message from Govnr's Park

Denver's Original Tavern Denver's favorite neighborhood spot has been serving up generous portions of classic tavern fare, libations, and great times to an eclectic crowd for over 20 years. As our south Capitol Hill neighborhood has evolved, Gov's has evolved with it. But while our menu may change, our commitment to provide excellent service, great food and drink, and an enjoyable experience, all at the best value in town, has remained our #1 priority since we opened our doors.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
With a great patio, several pool tables and two bars, Govnr's Park Tavern is always busiest in the summer. Folks flock from several different downtown neighborhoods for a yard of beer or other big drinks. The menu features appetizers like artichoke-heart dip or fried calamari rings as well as beef or buffalo burgers topped with everything from bacon and cheese to guacamole or cajun seasoning. Wings come as original, Holy Habanero, or 24K Gold (barbecue).

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Get two-for-one drinks Monday through Saturday from 4pm to 7pm.
  2. What to Drink - One famous drink is "The Cheesman," a sand pail full of several different liquors (most akin to an enormous Long Island Iced Tea) adorned with plastic animals and served with several straws so you and your friends can imbibe together.

Fun place to hang out

by Deborah W. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,939

I've been to Govnr's Park many times, and I've always had a good experience. The food is good and there's a nice variety of items on the menu. The patio is great when the weather's nice. All sandwiches are ala carte, so get a side of frings (fries and onion rings) to share.

Great place to meet after work

by Ruthann R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,769

This is a great place to meet friends and celebrate when the work day is through. It's usually really loud in there, so I wouldn't suggest it for a intimate date. But if you're looking for a bar with a cozy atmosphere then this is your place.

Good for larger groups

by Rajeev M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 530

The place is crowded and the drinks are expensive. That being said, it is a nice location and the atmosphere is always lively. Not a bad place to get together a group of friends...just make sure no one skips out early on the bill.

Fun

by Thea S. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 188

Govnr's Park is fun, fun, fun! The atmosphere is great, the food is good and it's always a blast to hang out there. Parking is annoying but anything around downtown is. It's worth the trek.

Great Patio

by stevedenver

Great atmosphere, great people and great patio. I suggest you go during 2 for 1 because it is expensive.

Lame, not worth time or money

by jeffreylee

The service is horrible, the food is greasy, and the entire restaurant is very dirty. You'd be better off hanging out downtown instead of this dive bar.

Best sports, best neighborhood bar, VERY courteous staff.

by mingez

I had been to Gov park tavern for happy hour, and loved the 2 for 1 beers. It was summer, and the neighborhood is soooo beautiful, making the patio awesome.

Then, I went to catch a Sharks game (not locally shown) as it was the Stanley Cup and I'm a huge fan. The staff was soooo accommodating and went out of their way to get the game up for me. I'll always go back.

It's a very quaint bar with a rich history and a great cozy atmosphere. If you are looking for pretentious people, this is not the place. If you want a great "cheers" type bar, hook it up, it'll be worth it.

Crowded, but that's because it's great

by breedo2000

I love Gov Park. It can be quite busy at times, but all in all for a neighborhood bar, it is definitely one of my faves. The food is fab, the service is good (usually), and the happy hour is great. I recently moved out of walking distance to it and can't wait to move back! Thursday-Sunday can be quite busy and sometimes it takes a while to get your drinks, but other than that I have no real complaints. The patio is nice in the summer, and the restaurant inside is SOOOO much better since there is no more smoking!

Pros: Great food, good drink specials

Cons: Busy and noisy at times-can take a while to get drinks

Love Gov's Park

by baconnic

This is a great place to go to enjoy a few beers and great food with friends. 2 for 1 beer specials are a big plus as is the Super Cold Draft (Coors Light draft that serves beer below freezing) beer. Try the friend pickels. I don't even like pickles but I love these chips. Also, ahi tuna app is wonderful.

Pros: Cold Coors Light on tap

This place Rocks

by barstool

We were a little taken back by some of the previous reviews so hesitated to go in sorry we waited so long. This place has the best happy hour 2 for 1 on the giant beers. my roommate and myself just moved to denver and really have found a new home. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The food is not just typical bar food, huge salads and great sandwiches. It does get real crowded on most nights but they always seem to make time for us. Try the pretzel and cheese dip it rocks

Pros: Home away from Home

Cons: not open 24 hours

This place is more crowded and has less class than a flea market on a Saturday morning

by happyhourqueen

I went to Govs Park for a friends birthday last week. The weather was terrible and God forbid if you can park anywhere in the vicinity of the restaurant. It was crowded and absolutely boiling hot inside - think sweaty mullets and you'll get the picture.

If you like to get 2-for-1 big as$ beers, this is place for you. But you better drink fast because it's so flippin hot in there your 2nd beer will be hot before you get back to your table (if you can even find a table). And if you drink wine, good luck. You'll be hungover before the first sip is completely down your throat. Very poor quality.

I can't comment on the food - I was so disgusted by the heat and the atmosphere alone the only thing my menu was good for was trying to fan myself with air. We left and I told my friend I would be personally insulted if she ever asked me to go there again.

There are much better dive bars in Denver

by mbradensig

The staff is pushy and the specials aren't that special compared to other bars in the same style category (divey, sports bar). I've been a few times and there's always at least 3 times as many guys as there were girls. The few girls there were not attractive and definitely members of the junior varsity squad of our society. The only people I know who really like this place are these 2 ugly, classless girls from my office who love to be the center of attention, and go there to get picked up by different guys every week. So, unless you're an ugly girl who wants to attention, or, a slezy guy willing to trade looks for moral flexibility, I would avoid this place.

Pros: I can't think of anything that makes this place good compared to anywhere in Denver

Cons: rude staff, few + unattractive females, avg food, meat market for ugly girls

Great Beer specials, but closed in patio leaves inside cold and smokey

by njo

Govnr?s Park is a fun bar with great beer specials. However, in the winter they allow smoking on there closed in patio which they always leave the door open too. So not only to you end up smelling like smoke, it is also freezing in there.

Used to be an ok place to hang out, but its a "has been" now. There was litterally hair in my food and food on my silverware. It's not like I'm a clean freak, but it was discusting!

Cons: Snotty people, NO PARKING at all, pain

This Place is Gross

by bonny11

My friends and I went there on a Saturday night, and I could not get over how dirty everything was. The floors, tables, and chairs looked like they hadn't been wiped off in days. The smoke was so thick we were all hacking. The music was too loud, and the guys there were a little "weathered" if you know what I mean. The kicker is when we sat at the bar for 20 minutes and was ignored by the bartender, even though I said "Excuse me," about 3 times. I guess they didn't want our money, so we bailed without spending a dime. I will never go back.

Pros: none

Cons: bad service, dirty, smells bad

Waitresses are RUDE!

by punky76942

Went out with a few of my girlfriends to Govs Park, which is normally a fun place! After their shift, a couple of the waitresses went to the bar in the billiards area and proceded to get drunk and tried to start a fight with my friends & I because we leaned over to get our beer from the bartender. After a few words with the waitress, the bartender threw my credit card at me and said he didn't want our money there!

Pros: good happy hour

Cons: , terrible parking

Great Fun!

by tjlobene

I recently visited Govnr's and was happy to see the changes they have made the past few months. Improvements all around, from the menu to the staff. We had a really great experience and will definitely be making it one of our regular neighborhood bars.

Is that an Oxford or a Polo?

by mauime

What a bunch of prententious losers - this place used to be a great neighborhood bar, great place for pool and happy hour...now it's a bunch of wannabies...crap service by equaly boring waitstaff. Just goes to show, people these days are really pretty self absorbed and forgot how to have fun...keep your nine dollar burger, I'll go to Pearl Street.

Good luck getting a drink. If all you want is to people watch then your fine, however, it takes about 20 minutes to get a drink.

If you like Denver culture

by mjc_co

If you like Denver culture -- that is, you want a laid-back atmosphere with friendly, good-looking people that enjoy beer and junk food, then this crowd is definitely for you. It takes you back to your college days or high school small town America. If you're a yuppie who prefers Martinis to Amber Ale, then you'd better head for 16th Street. This is a dockers type of place -- definitely not a dress to the nines place, but it's a cut above jeans and T-shirts, although they can still be worn.

Pros: Location, Denver culture, Reasonable prices

Cons: No live music, Denver culture, parking

by yellojelloskull

If you want to go to a bar with a buch of mega yuppies. Then this is your place. You wont find a place with bigger yups and watered down drinks. The guy to gall ratio is about 170 to 2 so if you are looking for guys that are really cheezy that have horrid lines you may do well here, but if you are looking for a lady.... Forget about it.

Pros: Has Liquor, has food, Urban

Cons: Waters liquor down, Reallly bad food, Cheese Central

Reserved tables? BAH!

by cowcat

This place used to be one of my favorites, but after several instances of bad service, hair in food, etc... It has just gone to the dogs. I suspect the biggest reason I refuse to go here anymore is the fact that there will be 5-10 tables "reserved" for hours before the party arrives. Last time I checked, this was a BAR not Chez Louis. If you want a much better expperience, head to Caldonia's or Paramount Cafe. They are owned by the same company, but are much better.

Cons: Crowded, Meat Market, Bad Food

Yuppies, yuppies, yuppies

by YuppiesRbad

Yea, go there if you like to hang out with a self-absored, boring crowd! The only thing more pretentious than the crowd is the waitstaff and bartenders. They act like they're doing you a favor to serve you a beer. Have fun hanging out with the self-loving, obnoxious trust-fund kids.

Pros: None

Cons: The whole place, customers included

Smoke is the word

by sripley

It's tough to give Gov's an A plus. Sometimes it's a sports bar sometimes it's a pick up bar and sometimes it's a happy hour bar. Out of the three Happy hour is the best call if you can find seating outside. Get there about 3. The beers are huge two for one is a great special however it can lead to some serious lingering headaches. I think it's combination of draft beer and ventalation.
The food is allright, the best bet is the Mexican food. A little bit of everything but still a dive.
