I've been to innumerable salons in NYc over the past 15 (or more!) years, but April has a way of cutting and then styling my hair that is above and beyond. I have never left there without feeling better than when I walked in - emotionally

Recently got a haircut from Liliana at Suite 303 and I LOVE IT.

It's stylish and practical and perfect.

The atmosphere is super welcoming and Liliana was extremely helpful when I asked for pointers on styling my new haircut.

Huge disappointment, huge waste of money, and huge arrogance. Went directly from the salon to another top salon and had the mess rectified. Guests at the Chelsea Hotel should be forewarned,,,all attitude and no talent!

For years I have been having my hair cut by "the best" until I met April. All I have to say is NO CONTEST!!!! That girl is a miracle walking. She did for my hair what no other supposedly great stylist did. Please do not listen to any

I LOVE going to Suite 303. April's been cutting my hair for 3 years and you couldn't pay me to go anywhere else. The color is always perfect too. It is so worth it. Try sitting in her chair and letting her go with her vision for you. She's an artist and an innovator. Thank you April!!

have had my hair cut by april a number of times...every OTHER haircut was "pretty good" which for the money is unacceptable..but so hard to find a good curly hair cutter...., (btw...price changes all the time!.)..
well...the last hair cut and color was the worst.... a $10 supercuts haircut, at best....when i went back to have it fixed, i got a lecture as opposed to an apology..a level of arrogance unjustified by her talent ,or lack there of....not a clue as how to style curly...and the whole edward scissorhands
approach to cutting is RIDICULOUS!!!..
DEFINITELY not the rock start that she thinks she is...
STEAR CLEAR!!!!!don't let the whole chelsea hotel thing lure you in...every time i would go there would different staff....certainly says something about the way she runs her business....BAD!!!!!!!!!!BAD....BAD!!!!

i was seeing a stylist at suite 303, her name was stephani and was bummed when she left and i couldn't reach her. it's a rare thing to find someone who cuts my hair right, as well as i really liked her on a personal level. imagine how unhappy i was to call the salon to find out she was no longer there, and when i asked if they knew where she was the receptionist actually said 'i don't know, i'm only a receptionist".
yeah, so much for a live person at the desk.
anyway, thanks to a lil' google in my life, i found her at ion salon in soho...if anyone else is in the same predicament as i was, you are no more!

I met april when i was in a crossroads in my career..I fell upon her salon when I was about to give up.. I tryed out for her and did well, but she had other people to build there. I understood, but that day that I met her is forever in my heart. It was pooring oyt, i wa able to get models for cuts. I was tired , hungry, but I was so impressed by her and her energy was amazing. She showed me some cool things to do, and she welcomed me into her sweet, that day. April showed me that eventhough she has a funky high end salon, she was so nice to me. She didnt act like she was better, or act like some narcasistic hairstylists that I had encountered on my journey for a new home. She is truley inspirational; in many ways. I am glad I met her and I still stop by once and a while to say hi.. Miss you april.. Thank u jill

80 dollars worth spent. i mean really a pair of true religion jeans are 420 so to me its worth it.. if you cant afford it than sorry cause your missing out. i had a great experience.. as soon as i walked in they were offering me juice water coffee whatever and coming from jersey you don't get that everyday so pretty cool. i had Stefani cut my hair and at first i wasnt sure about things cause i know they cut womens hair but i wasnt sure how she was gonna shape my hair and no barber has ever done anything close, she knew what she was doing. i had the day off from school so i didn't mind that it took an hour and a half but i was chattin it up so its all good. after she was done april came over checked out my cut and did a little touch up but over all it was perfect. i felt like an idiot because i think i daid awesome like 20 times i was just really happy with the hair cut and that i found my new salon...... ill be there in another month or so and i cant wait to go back!

Cons: nothing bad to say

I've been going to Chris Scena for my haircuts for two years. He's the best guy around for men and women's cuts -- I've sent dozens of my friends to him and they have all loved their cuts.

So imagine my surprise when all of a sudden, I call 303 for my next appointment and they tell me that he is "gone." Worse yet, they refuse to give me his contact information! But, after looking for weeks and weeks, I finally found him at Rizza Salon (212.206.7622). The place is much quieter and calmer than 303. I still have a lot of warm feelings about this place, but I'm gonna follow Chris wherever he goes.

Cons: Pricey, no more male stylists

From the moment one walks into Suite 303, it's apparent that the place is different. Most high-end salons have attitude, and Suite 303 is no exception. What -is- exceptional is that unlike most places on the cutting edge of fashion, Suite 303's attitude is welcoming, not snobby. That's because this place doesn't need to be snobby to be cool - the staff knows it's cool, so they're warm, open and accepting. April, Stefani and the rest of the team take the time to learn what makes each client tick - they're not looking to impose their own vision on their clients so much as bring their clients' visions to life. The experience is akin to hanging out in the living room of your coolest, bohemian friend and having her give you the best makeover you've ever had.

Pros: Warm, friendly and uber-hip

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I was very interested when I read the other reviews here, because they matched my experience. I was quote $95.00 for a haircut. It somehow magically went up to $115.00, plus tax. I asked for a receipt, and, like the other person who reviewed here, the 'reception' got angry, and scribbled something down on a napkin! So this clearly a shady operation. The whole time they were complaining about the management of the hotel, and going on about their money troubles (not very professional). Also, it has become well known that when you make an appointment they ask you what you do for a living. What is the reason for this? If it's because they want to know who best to match you with as a hairstylist, it's dopey, because just because you work in a day job that's not uber-hip in their eyes, they have no idea what you're personality and private life is about. How many club kids do you know who work at jobs that are 'conventional'? This way of doing business really does border on discriminatory. Because of the unprofessiona attitude and practices, I would stay away. If there haircuts were fabulous, that would be another thing, but they really are not that special. April's fees are also ridiculous. She does much better with men, and she needs to be careful with the scissors during her 'performances'.

first of all, I have worn extensions for years, and everyone always tells me to take them out, until now. I went to suite 303 for a haircut and while I was there i noticed someone that was getting extensions and they looked amazing. So i decided to get a consultation with Amalia. It was less than what I was paying for, for what I had, so i decided to give her a try. It was the best decision. They look so natural its awesome. She had a special technique I had never seen before and the cut she gave me tied it all in together. now instead of my friends begging me to take them out, they all want them! thank you amalia for changing my hair!! I love suite 303!!

Having spent several years as a 'hair model' -- a horrifying thought I know -- I am quite 'particular' about my haircuts. I am also 'serially monogamous' about stylists -- choosing one and staying the course for around two years before moving on to try something new. This strategy has had its highs and its lows. I have had great luck at some salons -- Laicale with Fabrizio for example -- and less good luck elsewhere -- including in Milan, Italy. After two years at Laicale, I felt it was time to move on and after some considerable research settled on April Barton at Suite 303. I arrived for my first 'cut' yesterday several minutes before April and while waiting checked out the cuts being given to two very different looking, but both extremely attractive women, by two stylists whose names I believe were Heather and Stephanie (I could be wrong). The stylings were fantastic, absolutely well suited to the faces and shapes and looks of the women. The most impressive feature of both cuts was the 'inside' cutting which was precise, careful and well conceived. It was very much like the underpainting in a work of abstract art. There was so much 'inside' the haircut, like the colors inside the paintings. It really was artistic in its execution and ultimately in its effect. I was impressed and it increased my confidence and completely reduced my anxiety in having April have at my hair. For her part, April read my face and hair instantly; I was comfortable with her approach and vision and left myself entirely in her hands. I am happy I did. The look is exactly how I conceive of myself and the result is that when I left the Salon and the Chelsea Hotel I walked the streets back to my apartment confident and comfortable in my skin and in my look. I am sure that creative styling and risk taking is not for everyone. But my sense of the stylists at Suite 303 is that they are both artists and artisans. The staff was courteous and welcoming as well. Excellent.

Pros: Imagination, quality of cut, detail

Cons: none i experienced

.

When I went to see April for cut and color, it was her decision to "embrace my gray". It was a scary thought but I went with it. I couldn't believe how not only painless but fun the process has been. With high lights and low lights, I now have an amazing color that only needs touched up every 3 months. Not only did I get out of the grind of getting color every 3 weeks but total strangers stop me on the street to tell me how much they like my hair. Of course, it is the great cut that makes it look good too. April is a real artist. The atmosphere is fun and friendly and everyone makes you feel at home. I never thought I would look forward to going to get my hair done but now I do. Worth every penny and more.

Pros: April is a genius with the shears, great atmosphere, sweet dog, Glam Power spray

Cons: In a perfect world, it would be free and take place in my home

.

On my first visit to Suite 303, April cut my much-neglected hair into an easy-to-manage, face flattering style. My subsequent visits were far less satisfying, and on the last one, April seemed disappointed that I wanted my hair shorter and I left the salon with a 'tail' a la Florence Henderson from the Carol Brady days. I had to wait three months for my hair to grow out enough to get the tail chopped off at another salon. Between the cut, color (very nice girl, but extremely unimpressive work) and tips, my bill for that disaster was nearly $700.00. Wouldn't have minded the price tag if I looked incredible- beauty has no price as far as I'm concerned, but this was like a $700.00 joke; I've been afraid to look in the mirror all summer. Finally rescued by a salon in one of the outer boros- around $200 for incredible highlights and a cut that doesn't make me look like I'm on my way to a PTA meeting.

Pros: April's dog and sometimes staff members' dogs are adorable and fun

Cons: Much ado about nothing- didn't measure up to the hype

I am wondering if the folks below are talking about the same salon here? My partner and I were in New York for business and needed some pampering, so we went to April's salon. Wow! The crew here is AWESOME! So sweet and not uptight by any means!! By the way no one ever asked me what I did for a living while taking our reservation. So I'm not sure where that guy called, but I know it wasn't here! Heather cut my hair and she was such a doll :) Girl's got skills! My partner had her hair done by Chris (and let me thank you now Chris...Its the BEST haircut & color she has ever had). April was totally great....she wants to make sure everyone leaves looking good and feeling happy about the service they just received! We are SO happy we found this place... We will be back in October and you can bet your sweet buns we will visit.

Pros: Quality Service

Cons: Not closer to Chicago!

I found everyone at Suite 303 to be very friendly and accommodating. In such a busy and trendy hair salon, it's good to be able to communicate your needs while there. Getting to know the person servicing you is a plus in this crazy world. April and the other stylist are true artist and when you choose an artist you have to really love and appreciate what they do. I will go back there the next time I'm in New York.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who was disappointed with Steph. I had similar experience. The first time, April came around and was all over the cut, fixing it. The second time, April stayed away, and the end result was a mess. Steph is very nice, and overall good, but I get the sense that she's not there yet-- definitely not worth the price she's asking. And as with previous reviewer, my cut was also unbelievably uneven. I think it's great to have a nice person doing your hair, but really-- this was sub-par. I could have gone to supercuts and gotten the same thing. what's with the payment thing? i asked for a receipt for paying over 100.00, and they looked at me with disdain, then scribbled something in pencil on a piece of paper torn off a piece of notebook paper. very professional. is the irs listening? what most bothered me about making the appointment-- and two other people have told me this-- is that they first ask you 'what do you do for a living?' before allowing the appointment to be made. if you say you're in a profession that's not cool enough for them, does that mean 'no haircut for you.' discrimination, anyone? that's nearly illegal, honeys.

Pros: if you think being inside the chelsea hotel is cool, you'll be happy

Cons: payment . prices not what quoted. irs needs to be summoned! don't ask someone what they do for a living before you decide if you can take their money under the table

.

not a good experience with april barton's crew of hair stylists. they get an F for customer service and i got the distinct impression that i somehow wasnt "cool" enough for the surroundings. (i guess school teachers arent allowed) april's cutting style is not only absurd and hilarious to watch, it also strikes me as a tad dangerous. (you may want to bring safety goggles). shes more of a performer than anything else.

her mission statement applauds "individual expression"--but in my experience, the 303 salon team struck me as a flock of hipster sheep. hey, if thats what you are in the mood for than this is the place for you. youll certainly get the haircut you deserve. otherwise, id seek out something a little more reliable and less shallow.

I got my haircut at suite 303 by April herself after reading good reviews but felt a little dissapointed so i decided to finally post something here so that other people looking for good haircuts can get another side to the stories. I walked right in because the door was slightly ajar and noone seemed to be watching it and felt a little lost until a nice person greeted me and sat me down with a glass of water. I met with April who gave me a quick evaluation of my hair and was sent to get my hair washed. P.S. i don't know if she's the only one who washes hair, but the girl who did me did a fantastic job with a head massage. Anyways, getting my hair cut by April felt a little like being pruned by Edward Scissorhands. It was interesting, she just lifted up chunks of hair and cut like crazy. I was intrigued until she stopped for almost ten minutes to pluck the eyebrows of a friend who had just walked in. She then continued to cut and then got a little too into it and poked me in the eye pretty hard. She apoligized but in my head I counted off another demerit. After about 15 more minutes of cutting and some partial drying she said i was done, and I was a little surprised because it didn't look "done" to me. I will credit her for giving me an easy to care for haircut, but it's pretty boring and I'm sorry I spent $300 on it when I could have gotten someone else to do it for 100 or less somewhere else. When I got home my boyfriend didn't notice I had a haricut until I told him an hour later. Last week my sister looked at me from the side and said I had a mullet. Today I am getting another haircut to chop off some hair to fix that. All in all, it was an interesting experience but I think the money would be better spent on some shoes or a months worth of groceries!

I started going to Salon Suite 303 about 6 months ago and have been there for different hair appointments from a hair fix to a highlight cut about three times since and every time I get really amazing hair. They really have the intuition, experience and great taste(from my classic dos to my styled dos) in hair. My most favourite stylist is Stefani. I saw her about a week ago and got my hair cut and colored . My cut is really feature complementing and I have the prettiest shades of reds and browns I've ever had in my life! and they look really natural. I would recommend 303 to anyone who wants their hair tastefully done with style.
*another plus is the home like atmosphere, you feel like you're at your friends house hanging out getting your hair done!

i've been going to stefani for over a year and have walked away beaming every single time. i've taken friends, family, even coworkers to her and all were thrilled with their cuts. in fact, last time i was there, two of my friends were getting a cut at the same time...word spreads when your hair looks good! i recently brought my mom who was visiting from minnesota (since both my sister, who lives in london, and i had raved) and stefani made the time at the last minute to see her. my mom left thrilled. her words "i've never had a better haircut in my 60 years...and she made me look 20 years younger!" not only did stefani listen to her and respect what look she wanted but cut it in a way that completely shaped my mom's head (no more puffy-mushroom shaped cut!) the music and vibe is always cheery, laid-back, fun. i look forward to my appointments with stefani. as i've taken pretty much everyone i love to get their haircut by stefani, i feel completely confident in referring the new york public to her. enjoy!

I've been coming to suite 303. more specifically, Stefani for over 2 years now. At this point, I don't trust anyone else with my cut. First, the atmosphere and vibe is perfect, not overstuffed with chairs everywhere and assistants running with scissors. The vibe is well maintained with good tunes and good people, both cliental and stylist. The salon doesn't do massive advertising in periodicals, for one reason, they don't need to. Word of mouth is enough to keep the chairs filled, which makes it feel like you stumbled upon a real cool party that not everyone is savvy to. I can say I've recommended all of my friends that have now become regulars. Stef is the future of the comb and sheers. Your haircut is more like a collaborative piece, your idea, and her crafting. She has her finger on the pulse of city fashion, as does everyone else who works there. (I've often seen uptown folk coming this chelsea gem just to get a shot of modern, tasty style) I've never walked away disappointed, i actually get compliments not from just women, but men. (It must be a good cut if a straight guys asks another straight guy where he goes.) Go there, relax, have a cup of coffee, go smoke a cigarette on the balcony of the Chelsea hotel, soak up the history oozing out of the walls of the place. I say go now before this beautiful salon gets pushed out the doors like all the residents. This is a small piece of pre MacHattan NYC that is well kept by all the stylist there. Besides, this might be the only room in the Chelsea you'll ever get in. Its a real cool club, be a part of it.

Cons: the hot women have men already

I can't believe it. I went to Stephani about six months ago, and got a very good cut-- however , the reason it was a good cut is because April stepped in at the end, and fixed it all up. This time, April came over to check her work. She pointed out that the sides weren't even, the back was flat, and that there were loose strands. "Fix it" she said. Stephani finished up-- and I asked if April was coming back-- because I realized that the look had some real problems. "No." I don't think someone who appears to still be in training (whether she is still in training, or she just is awful) should be charging 100.00 for a cut. The look I came away with so bad that a few people asked if I had been to Supercuts, or the ten dollar barber. Yes, it's that bad. Bowl cut? yes, that describes it. I'm pretty angry. Sure, the 'vibe' and the 'coolness' blah blah blah that everyone writes about here is true-- but who cares? ultimately what is important is that you get a good cut. 100 dollars for a hack job is wrong. I'll never go back, that's for sure.

The first time I went to 303, I felt like I was in someone's home or better yet - my home..with my music! Definately not the stuffy feeling I've had from sooo many other salons in the city..The location alone is quite the experience& The walls surround you with awesome pieces of art that change..i have to keep going back! As soon as you walk in you feel an awesome vibe! If I could move in - I would! The staff is always great energy. I'm pretty picky about my hair color- changing it all the time..Heather rocks... Always all about what you want, always listens..always walk out as if i just went on a vacation coming back with a new look..& this may sound silly but I'm pretty serious about my boyfriend's hair too..They nail it every time.. He walks out happy, I'm happy, everyone's happy! GO GO GO and enjoy the experience.

I went to April Barton's Suite 303 in the Chelsea Hotel. It was an amazing experience! The service was friendly, the music was great and the atmosphere was creative. It was the closest thing to getting a haircut from Edward Scissorhands! She appears to be channeling artistic energy from the haircutting gods above. The result was the best haircut I've ever had and trust me I've had many! I strongly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a salon that's anything but ordinary.

I love going to Suite 303! It's fun - everyone is so nice and I always get an amazing cut and color. Heather is a great stylist. She always listens to me and knows exactly what I want. I don't typically write reviews but have had such bad luck finding an excellent colorist that I had to share the news that Heather is Fantastic. So often you find a colorist who only sees your hair and your style in one dimension but Heather always knows how to tweek my color to make it look new and fresh every time. She has a gift and is truly talented. I love coming to see her and the always friendly crew at suite 303, the music is great and the atmosphere is always comfortable. I love to escape for a part of my day and come out feeling like my hair looks beautiful. I always get complements and always recommend Heather and suite 303.

I've been going to Suite 303 for nearly two years and couldn't say enough good things. I love the way it's hidden away in the Chelsea Hotel. Great music, unique space and a lovely little outdoor balcony. It's a very special place and group of people. Heather does my cut and color and she's amazing. She always makes sure I'm completely happy with her work. I love my cut and color - not to mention the beautiful blow-outs. I love going there and always feel beautiful when I walk out the door. If only I could get my hair done every day. If only.

If this isn't the single most overrated and overpriced salon in the entire city I dread discovering the one that is. Nackie, hang up the shears and take up an apprenticeship for a while. After a very promising discussion about what I expected I left with an abysmal cut that only became more unmanageable with time. Her free-form "technique" appeared sophomoric and haphazard. After the second week of consolatory "it could be worse" remarks from friends and coworkers I found a talented hairdresser who did his best to mitigate this disaster. He was as shocked at the cut as I was. Trust me, this was not some avant-guard, too-chic-to-be-appreciated cut. My hair looked like a mess. I looked like a mess. Truly awful.

Horrible color. I had blond hair and came in to have my roots touched up. I left with a head of brown hair. The hairstylist, Nackie, told me that she could tell I really wanted brown hair. What I really wanted was what I asked for.

Trust is a big issue when it comes to hair. you shouldnt allow just anyone to mess with the part of your body that is most visible to the world year round ... I also like to go to a salon that doesnt feel like a salon.. suite 303 feels like your best friends house where you are invited in, you sit back and relax and are treated with love and comraderie. no additudes here! they help your outer appearance to find a match to with your inner spirit. nacki is a true artist! and I trust her. having your hair done by her always feels like a very creative and intuitive collaboration. if you are even just a little bit daring and like really creative stylists in a great atmosphere you should definitely check out suite 303.!
also the best shampoo Ive had in a long time...left me wagging my tail..

While my ex-pat fellow Brendan Behan had already established himself as a gifted writer before taking up residence at " The Chelsea ", if I didn't reside mostly on the west coast, the alluring exciting atmosphere at April Barton's Suite 303, would have take a room, just so I could be close to the most fun hair salon I've ever been in. Thank you April and co. for some beautiful times.

Oy. The eternal quest for a consistent colorist continued at Suite 303.

I decided to check out this place because it's in the Chelsea Hotel and that's where my beloved haircutter lives (he doesn't do color).

When I walked in it was like a big party. Music, grilling, tons of people. Everyone was nice to me, but in the end it seemed like my colorist Nackie was more interested in eating lunch and talking than in the way my hair was going.

I asked her NOT to make me darker than I was. In the end.....I walked out darker. She said that she had "bumped it up" to make me more something-or-other. But that wasn't her call to make. It's my head.

Also, she did some freak blowdrying to my curls where I ended up with bi-level hair. Another one of her customers was styled into a cross between Liz Taylor in Butterfield 8 and a pin cushion.

Also, the assistant who washed my hair didn't give me a towel, no one noticed either, and my shirt got stained.

It wasn't the kind of hair trauma where you go home and cry. More like a general disatisfaction that grew over the course of the week until the following Friday I went to a local place (Hair Hoppers -- they're not bad!) and asked them to throw in some lighter highlights.

Bottom line: for $225, you should be taken care of and very happy with your hair. I just wasn't.

This salon is truly an oasis in the middle of Manhattan. When you arrive there, it feels very exclusive as it is inside the Chelsea hotel on the third floor and there is no sign. But when you get off the elevator, you can hear the music blasting from down the hall and when you walk in, it's like a party. Everyone there is so nice and talented. April, the owner, is a master at her trade and seems to go into a trance when cutting your hair. Not to mention, her portfolio is more than impressive from shots of U2, Dave Matthews, Mary J, Adrien Brody and Jake Gyllenhaal. It is such a fun atmoshpere and the space has such a rich history with a modern twist. And my haircut was the best ever! This is definitely a place everyone should go to!

I've naturally thick, curly/wavy hair - short & I want to grow it out. They told me that I would get a cut which would make my hair look LONGER and make it grow out wonderfully. They were extremely friendly during the cut, the atmosphere was funky and fun. My hair was cut by Liz. I left the salon looking like Florence Henderson, but I let it slide. It turned out to be a disaster!
My hair now is so short, thin, and gets greasy. I have NEVER had this problem before. I went back a week later and asked them to fix it or at least show me how to style it. They tried to pass it off - that the cut was actaully fantastic and very "in" right now.

I am not able to style it on your own and look like a freak most of the time.
