No really, go eat at Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q. That's all you need to know. \r
OK, OK...I'll tell you more - but you could have been there already eating.....\r
\r
So I drive by this place and I'm looking for somewhere to have lunch. I always love trying new local spots, so in I go. It's just me, so I grab my newspaper and HOLY MOLY the place is packed. I find a table and squeeze in. Looking over the menu, I decided to go for the fried chicken plate. \r
\r
Chicken is always my measuring stick for a BBQ place. It's hard to find fried chicken that's not overcooked and dry. Well, Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q knows how to cook chicken - it was delicious! Every bit of it tender and juicy - and it was seasoned perfectly. \r
\r
On top of that - it was fast. I didn't get through maybe half of the sports page when the food came out.\r
\r
Just a note - The waitress told me the ribs, on Tuesday only, were really good. She's probably right, because when I looked around, just about everyone in the place was eating ribs. Guess I'll try them next time....I'll definitely be back!

Did lunch at Hog Heaven. Didn't take long to order at the window. Meal was inexpensive. Had the chopped pork sandwich and thought it very good. I'm still trying to adjust my taste buds to that vinegar-based sauce however. Good hush puppies too. The banana pudding was good, not great. Friendly, efficient wait-staff. Definitely on my short list for lunch now. Sure wished they had one on the south side of Durham.

First, I never take the time to write reviews, but the record needs to be set straight. I'm a barbecue fanatic, and Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q has consistently the best barbecue I've had in my entire life. I've eaten barbecue around NC, and Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q can not be beat for their chopped barbecue. The restaurant's ribs, chicken and fish are very good, but the chopped pork is off of the charts. Although the service I've experienced has been top notch, I couldn't care less because the food is so good. I also like the homemade BBQ sauce. \r

Great staff, great food, great service. Best coleslaw and potato salad I've ever eaten. All these basics combined with the area's best barbeque and chicken, it's heaven on a plate. Real simple atmosphere provide customers with a simple dining experience. \r

I am employed at Duke and several committees have had events catered by Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q. I have attended several of them. They communicate the contracts clearly and are always available for special requests. They will accommodate your every need to their best ability. The set up is timely, the food is prepared/delivered/and/or served professionally and has a touch of class! We love the bqq, chicken, vegetables and banana pudding! Kudos to the owners and staff!\r

You have to be looking for Hog Heaven to find it. It is in a small strip mall on Guess Road about a hundred yards from I-85. But you know as soon as you walk in you are at the right place.\r
\r
First of all, if you are going for lunch you better go early because the place is packed by noon.\r
\r
And the reason for the crowd is the great BBQ! Really good pork & chicken. Love the hush puppies and banana pudding. I'm not a coleslaw person so I can't comment on that. All of this at a reasonable price.\r
\r
If you want good BBQ cooked on site, skip the chains and head to Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q. I promise you will be a customer for life.\r

We went to Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q last Friday night. The super friendly crowd gave the place a great buzz! The menu is full of comfort food that hits the spot, such as the pulled pork and mac and cheese. The enormous portions come with a very reasonable price tag. You definitely won't leave hungry from this place. And the waitress made the evening even more special by being super sweet! We'll be back.

I travel for a living and consider myself somewhat of a ""professional"" eater with a particular affinity for BBQ and homemade side dishes.\r
\r
I happened onto this place at home in Durham several months ago and I can honestly say that they ""fill the bill"" in both categories........excellent bbq and real, scratch made sides and desserts.\r
\r
Everytime I'm there, I can hear them chopping BBQ so I know it's fresh cooked on site. You can smell the BBQ cooking in any direction. \r
\r
The price is right too\r

Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q is a great little place. The employees are probably the most down-to-earth, nice people ever. I love to come here for my lunch hour because they are quick with the orders and I always have a good experience. Plus they are very reasonable with the prices. So if you are in the mood for bbq or just some good southern cooking I recommend Hog Heaven. They have great food and plenty to chose from. If you have never eaten there-I recommend trying the bbq or chicken. And please, try the sweet tea! I swear it is the best I have ever had!

Got the family pack with chopped BBQ. Sides and puppies were good, but the Q had very little smoke flavor and no ""pink"" evident that is usually present in real smoked meat. Don't know if they boil it or what, but it isn't smoked for hours on end. Needs lots of sauce to make it edible. Many other much better places around.

Pros: Friendly and Community based!!!!

.

Hog Heaven has always helped out through the community in helping to raise money for different events. Our loccal Vol. Fire Dept. in Bahama has held many family nights there to raise money for our station. The food is GREAT, as close to your momma's cooking as you can get. Service is always good and you will leave full all the while looking forward to the next visit! If you can't eat that banana pudding now order it to go or you will be sorry! Yum Yum!!

Cons: None!

I love their BBQ and everything else on the menu! But I think I could eat their chicken and dumplings, candied yams and squash for dinner every day. (I do average getting that once or twice a week and BBQ that often too!) You can dine in, order at the window outside, or drive to a window. Makes it simple, it's fast, and you can't find better food.

Not only is this the best BBQ in Durham but you have to try their granny potatoes! Everything on their menu is great southern, down-home cooking! The owners are great people that are also very involved in their community and help with local non-profit organizations and events. We love this place :))

Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q has the best food ever, we are quite discerning in our taste for food and this restaurant is by far, the most flavorful food we have had in a while! The barbeque, to die for...the fried chicken - not greasy, just perfect! The flounder and catfish were just too big to eat all at once. And the banana pudding was just right! Please, do try this restaurant out, it has plenty of personality and lots of flavor to the food. The service was just right, not too overbearing but always there when you needed her. One of our best finds around.

I've been all over the U.S. and tried BBQ from everywhere. The only BBQ that even comes close to Hog Heaven is out of state. My wife and I went because we live close, but have never been. Shame on us! We didn't know what we were missing. The atmosphere was cozy and clean. I ordered the Chopped Pork BBQ sandwich w/coleslaw, side of Potato Salad and Baked Beans. I was shocked how the sandwich was so Delicious! It melts in your mouth. We're big BBQ fans and we've been looking for the best BBQ in the City of Durham. Here it is! It didn't taste as thick as pork can. It had a light taste, but still filling. The potato salad was seasoned right and the BBQ Baked beans were sweet and spicy. I highly enjoyed my experience. My wife had the ribs which were, as she stated were ""Cooked to Perfection""! We found our new BBQ spot!!! Service was great. We went in during the lunch hour, and our food was done and hot, within 8 minutes of ordering. Hog Heaven is the real deal when it comes to a BBQ. Thank you for taking the time to make us feel at home.

Over the holiday weekend the workers at Hog Heaven have been very busy. Imagine my surprise, to enter the dining area to find fresh paint and decor on the walls. The fresh appearence has only enhanced an already delightful dining experience. ""Della"" is a gem. If only other eateries in the city had a ""Della"" of their own. She makes a night out to Hog Heaven worth the trip. The other girls who work the dining area are a treat as well. kudos to Mark and the rest of the Durham Hog Heaven team!

Hog Heaven's barbecue needs no modifiers (such as ""Lexington, South Carolina mustard, Texas, Memphis, Kansas City"", etc.) It is an outstanding example of Barbeque, a delicacy invented and perfected in Eastern North Carolina. It is an anomally that a restaurant worthy to stand with Wilbur's of Goldsboro and Parker's of Wilson would be located outside the region in Durham, but such is the case. Their barbecue is authentic and served with the traditional East Carolina sides.\r
\r
Well worth a trip from Memphis, Dallas, Kansas City, or other regional grilled meat center to worship at a \r
Barbecue Shrine.

We just moved to the area, and heard that Hog Heaven was ranked the best BBQ in the area and their BBQ chicken was the talk of the locals so we definitely had to see what all the hype was about. It definitely lived up to the hype! The food is so good! The vinegar based sauce was new to us, and we will never look at BBQ the same way again. The chicken was also very good, and their fries are superb. Great sweet tea too. We have only lived here for about 1 month, and we have been to Hog Heaven 4 times. It is a definite 'don't miss.'

This was the highest rated on Citysearch.. I SEE WHY! This place was incredible. We came in on a quiet day kinda midway between lunch and dinner. As suggested, i tried a plate of barbeque and i was in heaven. The barbeque, of course, is top-notch, especially the platter with chopped pork and chicken, but the shrimp burger is also a worthwhile contender, and I love the roast (yes, roast) best of all. Believe me, the sauce, these other reviews are talking about is the real deal! I tried another place in Durham and I was horrified with my dinky plate of Q. I wouldn't say it was even a 1/4 lb (that's 4 oz) where I at least got probably close to double here and had to take some home (smothered in sauce of course!)\r

I'm a regular at Hog Heaven since I moved here almost 2 years ago. The meats and veggies are consistently good and high quality, as one reviewer stated. Not greasy and quite tender. The banana pudding is great - if you have room after your meal. They don't skimp on quantity.\r
\r
The dining room staff consists of one lady, according to my visits, who is really friendly and acts as if she's known you for years (teasing and joking around). I find this charming and really enjoy my meal once I get to the dining room. She's quick with the tea refills, too (which is practically sugar syrup - just how we like it down here). \r
\r
The cashiers, however, are less than pleasant. As many times as I've eaten here, I still feel rushed when placing my order and I don't dare ask questions about how the food is prepared! I habe been met with an eye roll or a sigh or other gestures indicating I am annoying them and they would rather return to the back to socialize or do crosswords than deal with snail-paced customers who ask questions, like me. To be fair, the cashiers are generally teenagers, but I once was rung up by an older man in a button-down shirt, so I think he was the manager - he refrained from puffing or eye-rolling, but still had the same air of ""hurry up and order, already!"" \r
\r
In short, the food is good, consistent, and high quality. The customer service is half good-half bad. It does not merit a special trip, but if you're around, definitely stop in. Don't forget to save room for banana pudding!

I really like the barbeque at Hog Heaven. They also have daily lunch specials and the portions are plentiful. Although I probably shouldn't, I often buy the pork skins which are as delicious as they are unhealthy. For dessert you must have the banana pudding. The parking may be a little hectic but the food is worth the hassle.

I have to say that the atmosphere isn't that great. I have yet to find a barbecue place that offers really good barbecue. I suppose if you are a native Carolinian, you will not have any issues with the barbecue, but for those who like sweet and tangy sauce this is not the place.

BBQ brings out the passion in people and there's always somebody who will take one side diametrically opposed to another's feelings in this topic. Personally, I don't see the fuss with Bullocks in Durham as one example because a lot of people like it. Hog Heaven is a little overpriced but the food is not bad. I don't go to these places looking for fancy ambiance or luxury-grade service. But good BBQ places have a level of charm in addition to the focal point of good pork in NC. I would not hesitate to go back to Hog Heaven if I were nearby and wanting a meal. It's pretty good, but as far as being the best cue in the area? No way. It's too non-descript to qualify. Allen and Sons, also thinks a lot of their own food by the way they price it, but their pork knocks Hog Heaven out of the water. A&S has real wood flavor that I don't get any hints of at HH. Bob's in Creedmoor is far superior to Hog Heaven as far as I'm concerned. We won't even mention Lexington though it's probably not fair to compare western NC style to eastern.\r
\r
I think Hog Heaven is a great place for a quick and casual meal. Good place to take the family. Service has always been satisfactory. Tables and floors are often dirty and sticky, probably because they don't have enough staff to keep things clean between sittings. Food is consistent in my experience and worth recommending but I would never suggest somebody go out of their way on a BBQ pilgrimage to try HH. I do not understand the accolades it receives but when you think about it, there's not a whole lot of competition in Durham when it comes to good barbecue.

Pros: Consistent food. Solid and the cue is not greasy.

Cons: Non-descript. Nothing spectacular. No wood flavor.

Can't see it. Barbecue is not the same as prior owner. Bland with no spices. I sat at the drive through window at 5pm for 10 minutes with one car in front of me. I ordered chicken and it must have been cooked at lunch. Cold and dry. Vegetables had no taste. Tea was good but I won't be going back. Over-rated and not worth the drive.

I really like the BBQ here. Tough choice for my favorite BBQ between this and the BBQ Lodge on Capitol Blvd in Raleigh, both are excellent - but I really like the sides and BBQ alternatives here. The chicken and dumplings are really good.\r
\r
Maybe it's because I'm a Yankee, but I had never seen ""southern style"" dumplings before. I'm used to more or less rounds of dough in my C&D, but these are flat, more like a lasagna noodle. It was rich and thick, with a 'lemony' flavor that was really nice. I think it benefitted from some black pepper. The chicken is flavorful and very tender.\r
\r
I tried the Brunswick stew as well. I loved it, my wife was more iffy on it, but she's not a huge stew fan to begin with. \r
\r
I liked the cole slaw a lot, and am looking forward to trying the potato salad next time I'm there.\r
\r
Hush puppies are always hot, fresh and delicious.\r
\r
The location is not in the best area, but not the worst either. Service is...OK. I mean, it's a BBQ joint, what do you expect? But here's an example - the front employees all seem to be high schoolers. The lemonade at the fountain was out of syrup - if you've ever worked fast food, it happens - you change the box, run the lines until the mix returns - problem solved. I told the girl it was out - she had no clue what to do. I could have run in the back and fixed it in 5 minutes, but apparently she'd never heard of this before. You order at a window when you walk in - pick up at a 2nd window. That's just the kind of place it is.\r
\r
Same for cleanliness. This is not fine dining. It has all the atmosphere of a high school cafeteria. It's by no means filthy, it's just...older. Again - not going to ding them much for that because it's a BBQ joint and it's what I expect.

Cons: location, staff needs some training

I used to live around the corner from this place and it was a definite drive up at least once a week. the food could not have been fresher if I made it myself. Vegetables are your regular steamed fare, but the Bar-B-Q and Brunswick stew is to die for!You gotta try it.dana

I've been eating at Hog Heaven for years. For my family, the food has always been great. We meet friends there several times a month. The barbeque has always been the best in town and that is why they were voted best barbeque by the people in the triangle. When you add on best caterer, they must be doing something right. Go Hog Heaven!

I would not recommend Hog Heaven. Their pork is very salty in my opinion. I was not pleased with the smell of the food either, it will turn you away from eating it. Maybe it was a bad day for the cook, who knows?

Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q is awesome.. I've read other reviews and almost all of them say the same thing, ""I LOVE HOG HEAVEN BAR-B-Q"".. That's because it's true. I drive about 80 miles round trip for the pork bbq, add some potato salad and green beans, wonderful.. I've heard the banana pudding is great, but I've always been too full to try it.. I've tried other bar-b-q places since moving here and there is no comparison in the taste of the pork.. Mark, is always making sure that your food is fine and you have everything you need.. It's a great atmosphere with southern charm and lots of smiling faces.. Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q is worth the drive..

I am a youth minister at a local Church. Recently our church held a family night fundraiser at Hog Heaven BBQ in order to help pay for the youth's mission camp. Hog Heaven donated 10% of the total nights proceeds to our youth group. From start to finish they were great to work with. The manager was extremely nice and every one there seemed to be focused on helping the customer. The Church loved the fundraiser and it really helped our youth. I would highly recommend Hog Heaven for a great, family friendly environment filled with nice people who are there to help you have a wonderful experience at their restaurant.

Before I left my review, I'll admit I read all of the ones posted previously. I agree with the over whelming majority by saying Hog Heaven does have the best bbq around. The waitress told me one night the bbq is chopped by hand as needed. It doesn't sit in pans all day. I usually eat there 3-4 times a week, mostly at lunch but with the family on the weekends. The daily specials are just out of this world. You would think your mom is in the kitchen cooking. Homemade banana pudding that is better than you would get from your church at homecoming. I think they also have the best seafood in Durham. My wife loves the flounder while I must say the shrimp dinner makes me think I'm at Wilmington. Most of all, the bbq is the best I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, everything in this restaurant is so good, it's like going home to mom's house but I've eaten bbq from everybody in the triangle and nobody does it better than Hog Heaven.

I've been coming to Hog Heaven for several years and i absolutely love it!! I usually order the bbq sandwich and I have to use a fork to eat the bbq before I can pick-up the sandwich. I recently tried the fish(flounder) and shrimp plate. It was very fresh tasting and the shrimp was fabulous!! The staff is always friendly and the service is always fast. This is a great place to eat lunch or you can take your family for a nice dinner.

My wife and I tried Hog Heaven Barbecue at I-85 and Guess Road in Durham and were wowed. She got the BBQ with potato salad and green beans. I got the BBQ and fried chicken breast with baby limas and fried okra. Both plates were $6.75 each, and the tea was awesome. Mark the manager told me it's the same as Bojangles' tea -- S & D.\r
\r
Nobody knows fried chicken like a Baptist preacher, and I can tell you the fried chicken was the best I'd had in a while, fried just right and juicy, salt and peppered well. It even had my two-year old saying, ""Chick -- en! Chick -- en!"" And it put Smithfield's Chicken to shame. My wife liked the vinegar BBQ sauce. I preferred the sweet. That is usually reversed for us. Both were the customary NC BBQ red with red and black peppers. \r
\r
We had banana pudding for dessert. It was the least excellent part of the meal, coming to us in a styrofoam container, cold, but it was still good. We debated whether it was worth the $1.60 we paid for it. We decided it wasn't quite worth that.\r
\r
The service was great, and the manager asked us twice how our meal was. The dining room attendant asked us at least three times and cleared our table for us. \r
\r
We spent less money, had better food and service than our usual Durham stop -- Cracker Barrel. I told Mark the manager before I left that Cracker Barrel in Durham had lost a regular customer today. He got so excited he sent me home with two more banana puddings.

Pros: Great chicken and barbecue. Great service, great prices

The food at Hog Heaven is great; especially the BBQ, slaw and hushpuppies. During the Christmas holidays, I took some BBQ my family, which live ""down East"". Their comment was it was the best they have ever eaten. The service is quick and the staff is extremely friendly. They always make you feel welcome at Hog Heaven and it is a place you will want to visit again and again. You are given good portions and you certainly get your money worth. Hog Heaven catered a meeting for me during the holidays; the food arrived when promised and was delicious. Everyone at the meeting commented on how great everything was and how much they enjoyed the meal. I highly recommend this restaurant for catering, eating in or take out. You will definitely be happy that you tried their food.

I just wanted to write a short note to thank you for the wonderful catering for my son?s eighth grade end of the year celebration. With the hottest day of the year and a group of excited eighth graders to feed and entertain, the event was nothing short of a miracle. The food was outstanding and the service impeccable. I really appreciate your attention to detail and the focus you and your staff show to the customer. It made our event more enjoyable to know the details of food and service were handled by such a professional pair of gentlemen. I can?t write without mentioning the outstanding food as well. The pig was cooked to perfection and the sides complimented the meal addressing both the adults? and the teenagers? tastes.\r
Thanks so much for making this event so enjoyable and the food so delicious. Based on personal experience I can certainly understand how Hog Heaven has been voted the best caterer for 2007.
