The woman who answered the phone to take my delivery order had a very, very strange attitude. I really don't think she was happy to hear from me!
Regardless, the food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and well-packed, but the miso was small (and looked/tasted like rusty water was the soup base), the yellowtail scallion roll was so funny tasting that I just ate what yellowtail I could from inside the roll, the shrimp tempura roll was really bad, but the salmon avocado rolls were good. Nothing at all was great, so I can't figure out why this place has such a good rating. It wasn't toooo expensive, thank goodness, or I'd feel really ripped off.

I really love happy hour for the cheaper drinks, of course, who doesn't? The thing that really bums me out is when I get hungry while getting my drink on and have to order food off the place's dinner menu and I get a bill that smashes my bills, if you know what I mean. Hamachi is frikkin awesome cause they have a bunch of food at happy hour prices too, like spicy tuna rolls.

I love my girlfriend, but she's what you'd call let's say "picky" about restaurants. She nagged me again that I don't take her out enough and told her I'd take her out more, if she didn't complain about every restaurant we go to and finally, I found a place that meets her approval! She loved the miso lobster special appetizer particularly and I had couple really cool rolls with broiled eel. Our waiter took good care of us, despite handling a ton of tables. Thanks again for giving me a nag-free night and a super meal. You'll see us again soon.

The concept of good food and service and price point has been around since time began. None of that seems to matter at Hamachi. I went there for my birthday. I had a previous good experience there so I figured with the small bar and non-hipster scene, it would be a cool place. WRONG!!!!!!! The service was bad, management was even worse and didn't want to hear what I had to say. The food was run-of-the-mill at best and overly priced for the quality. Management actually was rude to me when I left. I can't understand why a small business like Hamachi would act like this especially in these economic times. I will never go to Hamachi again!

I like good food and I go to a lot of great restaurants in Gramercy to get it, but for the most part they are super expensive and more like once a quarter (on my dime) or for taking clients (expense accounts, yea!), not once or twice a week kind of places. On my way out of Gramercy Tavern one night, I noticed Hamachi and popped in for a nightcap. I had a great time at the bar which was filled with the kind of locals that make you make a bar your local. I came back for dinner and was wowed by the high quality of the sushi and the prices. Now I bring the fam by a couple times a week. Totally recommended.

Pros: Phenomenal sushi and a lively bar

Cons: can get packed on a Friday night

I have been here a handful of times and every time I am amazed that such a reasonably priced and delicious place exists in the city. I am ADDICTED to their rock shrimp and sweet potato roll!
My boyfriend is a huge fan of Japanese food and even he was impressed, which is a rarity.
Always a treat!!!

...as for the negative reviews, I can only hope that they are thinking of another Hamachi, because this restaurant is plain AWESOME!

Cons: only con are the treacherous stairs to the bathroom!

Poor management that couldn't care less about the customers, a weak bar. The management, most notably the manager/owner Mary is a very nasy person to deal with. If you have a special need, this is not the place. Management is unresponsive and rather you go elsewhere. The food is passable, but why deal with the attitude when you can go elsewhere and have a better time? Do avoid!

Try the Deep Impact roll and any of the specials Everything else is awesome too, but this is what my table had at our last visit and I'm still dreaming about it! Going out for sushi is always kind of expensive, but my friends and I get around that by ordering a bunch of rolls to share and the bento boxes, which have a ton of food inside for not a ton of money.

Pros: Well-priced really amazing sushi

Cons: Make a reservation if you go on Friday, it gets crowded

Hamachi is not just a place you call after diggin the menu out of your overstuffed menu drawer; it's a place to bring friends and to try whatever is new on the menu. I have my favorites of course, but I'm pretty dedicated to letting the Specials menu guide me and I haven't been disappointed. The bento boxes are great in terms of the food and the price; it's usually what I recommend to sushi/Japanese food neophytes, but all us pros love them too!

I have been a regular patron of Hamachi for about the past six months. The food is simply drool-worthy, the brand new full bar has brought new life to the establishment, and the ambiance is completely relaxing after a long day! From the first night I walked in there I was treated like I had been going there forever. The bartender was so friendly and his cocktails were genius!

Their menus (regular and specials) have, literally, some of the most delicious things I have ever tasted in my life, like the rock shrimp appetizer, spicy tuna pizza and sea breeze roll. Their bento boxes are ENORMOUS and everything is so fresh.

When I saw some of the negative reviews below I was perplexed. I guarantee, if any of you go back you will change your tune. Hamachi might just have one of the best Japanese menus in the whole city!

The sushi is always fresh and the staff is very friendly. I was recently here for a birthday dinner and the restaurant brought us a "birthday surprise" dessert! Very reasonably priced for a group of 12, including drinks. Would definitely return soon for a birthday or a just a casual dinner.

I found this restaurant on this website and its one of the best things i've ever done! its located on a quiet block and was farely empty when i went there (7pm on a thursday). The service was good, and the waitress was delightful. I ordered the Chicken Teryaki which came with soup, veggies and rice. It was delicious and the proces arent too bad either!

I had nothing to complain about at the Hamachi Japanese Restaurant, in fact, I have nothing but good things to say. We were seated right away, had an attentive server and ate wonderful sushi. Prices were competitive with all the other sushi restaurants in the area. Very good.

Decided to try for the first time at Hamachi a few weeks ago after the recommendation of a friend. I was pretty impressed! I'm not a sushi expert but it tasted good for me, The food was fresh and we didn't have to wait too long. Will probably go back to Hamachi at some point in the near future.

All the good reviews are true. The sashimi was super fresh, no complaints whatsoever. We also had the sukiyaki. I've never had sukiyaki, and have always wanted to try. It was very salty in my opinion, but I have no prior comparison, so that just might be how it is. We got soup or salad before our sukiyaki, and also go some green tea ice cream and some fried tempura banana thing at the end of our meal, which came as a nice surprise. Will definitely be back.

Went here with a friend for Sunday evening dinner. After finishing our beers and appetizers, it became clear that the lone sushi chef had not even started making our orders, and appeared to be making take-out orders before ours. The restaurant had just one waiter serving the entire restaurant, and other customers looked increasingly impatient, as we were. We walked out after canceling or main orders -there's no need to put up with such slow service in an area that's full of food options. Also, there was a rather unpleasant smell of Pine-sol or similar disinfectant lingering inside -not very appetizing. Goto nearby Yama or even Choshi instead.

It's not glitzy or anything, but they have such an amazing variety of rolls that you'd likely never think of ordering and it's always perfectly fresh and the people couldn't possibly be nicer... Much better than going to Mizu...

We love going here. Its our Sushi home! The delivery is always perfect and they even throw in extras sometimes for fun. They are very quick and have never forgotten anything. There are a ton of sushi places in Grammercy and there is no place else like Hamachi, the service is great, the place is so clean and its so peaceful. Everyone is always smiling there!

The menu is very extensive and the sushi is super fresh. This restaurant has the largest variety of rolls and appetizers that I have ever seen. If you like Tomoe and Mizu try Hamachi. I love it. The eel melts in your mouth.
