Food delicious and service so so. I really have luck sitting outside for the service.. maybe it is the sun. They are happier with the breeze and the sun. Sitting at the bar is annoying as far as service goes. We live in the neighborhood and it is one of our favs. Food is outta this world.

I just returned to Barbette for a third time. The first two times were during a weekday when I and perhaps three other tables made up the entire clientele. Each time I ordered a simple omelet. I had originally planned to order a belgian waffle, but learned that the restaurant does not carry non-sugared syrup. When I suggested that the restaurant perhaps carry such an item, I was told that one regular customer brought his own and that the syrup is kept in the restaurant for him. So, it would seem such requests fall on deaf ears. Overall, however, I enjoyed my omelet and my coffee. Last week, I returned with a friend during the dinner hour. The place was packed and we were offered seats at one of the counters which we accepted. The server was a young man who was a bit obsequious but pleasant enough. My friend and I ordered salads. The salade nicoise that I had was served with lovely seared ahi tuna and was really quite delicious although it was somewhat lacking in enough greens. For two of us with salads, one soda, and a delicious dessert, it was about $50.00. I think that Barbette is one of those hit-or-miss type of establishments. My suggestion: avoid it during the rush hours and plan to pay a lot of money for feeling completely full.

I wish I would have read the reviews before visiting Barbette's. My brother and I decided to try Barbette's for brunch after seeing it mentioned in the Best of Twin Cities City Pages. It was a horrible experience from start to finish. As we walked in, we looked to the baristas/host for direction as to where to sit. No one made eye contact with us or talked to us for a good 5 minutes as we stood there next to them. Instead, they continued their conversation which included one barista referring to a customer as "the guy whose face looks like something I threw up this morning". A very educated staff -- I think not. That should have been our first clue to leave. Finally, a passing waitress motioned for us to just sit anywhere as she rolled her eyes (maybe a sign that read "please seat yourself" would have been appropriate?). After sitting in our ripped up and dirty seats for nearly 15 minutes, we were getting extremely frustrated. When the waitress finally made her way over to us, she helped a table next to us that had arrived about 5 minutes after us. When we finally ordered, the waitress was bothered by our question regarding meat in the quiche and failed to mention any specials etc. on the menu. When our food finally arrived, it was a pathetic attempt at French cuisine, reminding me much of any other granola restaurant that decided to call themselves French because they threw a crepe and some brie on the menu. Barbette?s was described as "romantic". If "romantic" means being treated horribly, insulted, and dining in a dirty lamp-lit garage, so as to hide that dirt -- then yes, Barbette's is romantic. In this market, a restaurant and its staff should be more than polite, especially when the food is such a disappointment. Do not waste your money here -- you will be sorry you did.

Brunch this past Sunday was a pathetic experience. Food, service, bathroom, cost: not worth it. Have tried over and over to write a detailed and factual review, but it is always rejected here. Great honesty citysearch. Read the true review at City Pages regarding brunch on November 2.

My husband and I went here for our anniversary hearing that it was voted the 2008 Most Romantic restaurant. First of all, the entrance was not super obvious and once we finally found the correct door we were ignored for 10 minutes. We finally got a table next to some very obnoxious wine tasters, who obviously were not dumping their wine samples after the taste, and again were ignored for another 10 minutes. When the server finally came around to us she did not even attempt to explain the menu or any specials, even though I told her it was our first time there. She merely asked if we wanted drinks and then ran away without asking if we wanted an appetizer. We had to snatch her as she was running away to ask if it was "ok" if we put in an appetizer order because we were hungry. I had to ask the manager if she could describe the specials and suggest anything on the menu, and surprisingly she didn't even know the specials! We ordered seafood and it took at least an hour to make and when we got it we were very unimpressed. The fish special seemed overcooked and very blah, and the salmon was very blah as well, although it was incredibly fresh.
All in all, we were very disappointed and will never go there for a special dinner again!

Perfectly cooked french style omelet with no browning. French fries without fault. Sauces made from homemade stock. Awesome hanger steak. Fantastic mussels. Cool atmosphere. Great beers and wine. What's not to love about this secrcet spot for people love good bistro fare?

Barbette is hands down one of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities. The food is consistently impressive and served with attention to detail. Beyond the menu, the wait staff is courteous, professional and attentive. This restaurant has perfected the balance between great food and great service. I can't wait for next week's special.

This is my first review of any restaurant but I would HIGHLY recommend Barbette to anyone and everyone. A perfect place to take a friend/family member(s) for a great food and wine. They have an extensive wine list with a large variety of wine choices. For food, I recommend the farm chicken entree - it was prepared and seasoned well and the carrots and beans were cooked just right. I frequent Barbette quite often and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Their outside tables area is a great place to relax and people-watch. Give it a try!

This is restaurant definitely is NOT cheap. Who gave it $ rating. It is more like $$$.
I was very disappointed with this restaurant. Pesto pasta had no pesto in it. Red snapper special was tasteless, and smelled not fresh. I don't recommend it!

My mother and I ate at Barbette over the weekend and it was fantastic! I had the wild rice salad with lamb sausage, which I heard the chef makes herself and my mother had the mussels. Both were fresh-tasting and delicious. For entrees I had the shrimp risotto- to die for- and mom had the steak with a HUGE pile of those great fries. I was reluctant to go after hearing a few reviews about bad service, but everything we had was great. They did seem a little slow with the entrees, but considering the place was completely full it seemed ok with us. I will definately be going back.

My husband and I dined with another couple at Barbette over the weekend. We both hired babysitters and were very excited to be out on the town and leaving our younguns at home! Very very disapppointed and wished we would've eat elsewhere. Food was cold, bland flavors. My chicken dish all tasted the same. Husbands steak was okay. The best part of the whole dinner out from appetizers to dessert was the fries. Although they were good I'd rather pay $1.35 for McDondalds fries. We felt awful when we left that we spent $150 on a crappy meal. We were dissappointed to say in the least and wil never return.

Do note the service was excellent. This is my first restaurat review I have ever written but felt the bad experience justified it. This was just a big bummer for our night on the town.

I recently meet a friend at Barbette for breakfast and it was great as usual. The coffee and espresso/latte can't be beat. The eggs benedict I ordered was excellent but I didn't really like the greens served with it. I love this place because the food is great and it's a very relaxing place to come. We drank coffee and ate breakfast for about 90 minutes and we never felt rushed. Another great visit!

Oh how I love Barbette! They have a new-ish chef and the menu there has never been better. We went the other night and the Lamb was divine as was the always good Steak Helene. The Chef seems to use very fresh ingredients and pairs flavors together seamlessly. YUM. You can always count on so so service at the bar, but any of the female servers are excellent!

I'll keep this short and sweet: Best French Toast I've ever had. Incredible organic eggs. Nice mixed greens. Very average Eggs Benedict. Terrible bacon and sausage. The sausage is like a beefstick you get at the gas station, the bacon is a funky smoked variety, very poor. If they wouldn't be insulted if I brought my own ham, bacon, or sausage I'd be there every weekend.

After years of poor dining experiences at Barbette I think they finally reached a solid stride. The menu is fantastic and the service has improved, FINALLY! I think that rude, arrogant bartender that's always there is finally gone, haven't seen him in my last two trips. I know he's turned off more than one customer to Barbette, I literally would not go back because of how rude he was and how he seemingly would chose who he would wait on and simply ignore other people until they got up and left or asked him several times for a drink. Anyway, to the good stuff, we went and had the always delicious pommes frites, so crispy, so hot, so delicious! We also had the tar tar of the day which was great, tuna with avocado and citrus vinaigrette. We shared a platter of cured meats and chicken liver pate which was a great value and presented very well. We also shared the creme brulee with chai.... my goodness I've never had such a fantastic dessert! The only con this trip was that there was a very loud, obnoxious hostess working the night we were there. She was literally yelling at guests and the staff. That was kind of weird.

After receiving rude and curt service on many occassions I hadn't been to Barbette in some time. I was pleasantly surprised recently when a friend convinced me to give it another go and had dinner there. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly, our server was excellent. We explained we hadn't been to Barbette in quite some time. She took the opportunity to let us know that Barbette had a new Chef and this was her new menu. The food was amazing! We had the short rib and the masa crepe, both highly recommended. The short rib was so tender it could be cut wtih a fork and served with creamy gorgonzola mashed potatoes and grilled asaparagus. The masa crepe sounded a bit strange on the menu but Danielle assured us it was worth trying. The flavor combinations were amazing. I will be back, and look forward to sampling many of the new menu items.

My favorite place in Minneapolis! The food is always fantastic and the service is generally good. (And if it isn't, the manager will take care of it).

I used to go to Barbette for breakfast/brunch semi-regularly a few years ago, until the service (esp. the hosts/bartenders) drove me away. I decided to give Barbette another try, this time for dinner, and I'm glad I did. The special fish dishes are beyond reproach; fresh perfectly cooked bass, with light crisped skin in a red wine reduction with diced lardons and morels, and side of whipped potatoes, was possibly THE BEST fish dinner I'd ever had, and I lived in Hawaii. I had another fish special at another time, a different type of white fish, also perfectly cooked, in a different sauce, still delicious. I tried a bite of a friend's chicken breast, moist delicately seasoned, fantastic. I've ordered the mussels a few times (a deal at $5 during happy hour), they were very undercooked twice, had them sent back to reheat, both times came back still slightly undercooked (I never open or eat the closed or mostly closed shells; these were the open shells). The female waitress, a pretty girl named Hilary, is attentive and accommodating. The male waiter (tall, thin) was inattentive, not so much rude as not caring about our table. He definitely paid more attention to the older more affluent looking clientele than he did us, though he has served us before and we order food, drinks and tip well (over 20% of entire bill). Also, have been ignored by the hosts/bartenders, yet again, we were standing around the front, waiting for a table. Other friends have had the same experience, and I recognize a lot of the staff that made me want to leave in the 1st place. The food is great, but the mixed service makes me hesitate to go back. It's always a crapshoot of who's going to be working, and I wish the owner would check the attitudes of those who had been working there for a while. I mean, if you're burnt out by the service industry, maybe it's time to move on?

I have patronized Barbette a few times and found it charming, eclectic and intimate. The food was wonderful and the waitstaff seemed very pleasant.

It's a nice place for a date and with that in mind I came there recently on a busy weekend afternoon. We were greeted by a very rude and harried hostess exclaiming gruffly that "we'd have a long wait and if we wanted to sit outside don't expect service anytime soon" She barely listened as we told her we'd just go somewhere else and she certainly did not care.

I understand when restaurants such as this are busy and I'm cool with that - even if service is slower than normal, but there is never any excuse for that attitude in a service industry. They need to take a cue from big city restaurants such as NYC and SF and their approach to service. Even in the "divey-est" venues their service is heads and shoulders above Minneapolis. It's too bad.

This is one of the best meals I have had in Mpls. since moving here. On par with a typical night out in SF - that is a compliment. Basic, good, non-pretentious food that is elegant, but not intimidating in a comfortable and intimate setting. Every single thing I had here was great - from the appetizers down to dessert and coffee. I hear they may be opening a place in the NE - I can not wait! Good quality food, good service, good atmosphere.

Went on a quiet weeknight around 8pm. Had a nice table for two. Liked the atmosphere, lighting, decoration. Parking is a negative. Server was neither attentive or indifferent. Took my order, brought my food, brought a bill, pretty standard. I had the steak and fries. Steak was great, fries were greasy, limp, cold, not good. Friend had a salad and said it was good. I thought it was overpriced for what it was, but it would be a cool date place if you like the hip and trendy uptown thing.

This is a great place for late night dinning and a glass of Champagne. We had the mussels and they were hit or miss. Some we good others were gritty and about broke a tooth. Hopefully it's just a bad batch. The rest of the food we ordered was great and we will be back.

Atmousphere: bustling, crowded, somewhat noisy - things that remind me of a bistro in the Marais. Food: Authentic, rustic as well as refined. No skimping corners on all the necessary rich, indulgent ingredients. Pommes frites were exactly 3-1/2" - 4", crisp on the outside and fluffy inside with a garlicky aioli. Only frying in goose fat could have improved them. Even though we were seated at the bar, the service was very good. That plus a reasonable house red and Lillet Aperetif (blanc, on the rocks with an orange twist).
Maybe my new favorite Twin Cities French?

No skimping corners on all the necessary rich, indulgent ingredients. Pommes frites were exactly 3-1/2" - 4", crisp on the outside and fluffy inside with a garlicky aioli. Only frying in goose fat could have improved them. Even though we were seated at the bar, the service was very good. That plus a reasonable house red and Lillet Aperetif (blanc, on the rocks with an orange twist).
Maybe my new favorite Twin Cities French?

Pros: food, ambience, service

Cons: parking

Got seated right away, hmmm, no wait on a saturday for brunch? That should have been our first clue. Slow, poor service from the start. Wanted a Waffle, sorry it is 2:05, can't get a waffle after 2, forget the fact that we were sitting there for 15 minutes. Fries were out first, they were good, but then we sat and waited. An hour later we left with a dinning experiece that we could have gotten at Denny's, for a fraction of the price. No atmosphere or hip trendiness is worth the wait, price or horrble experience! Get a clue, or better yet, some experience at customer service!

Barbette is a great neighborhood spot - I wouldn't come from too far to go there, but to walk to it is perfect. I have been there many times and basically had the same thing each time - Steak and Frites. If the steak is cooked as ordered (most of the time it is) it is very very good and the fries are great. Followed it up with a molten chocolate cake to share and you will be happy. The service is another issue - the waiters, in general are pretentious and annoying.

I do recommend Barbette for a drop in meal or late night dessert or wine (or dessert wine) but be in the mood to abide out of work actors practicing their craft.

December 2, 2005. Nice wine, scrumptious french fries and good desserts. Skip the dinner - it's overpriced and awful. I have to disagree with the reviewer who finally discovered that the food is "simple". This is an excuse for poorly prepared entrees in need of flavor. I had the crepes with smoked salmon and roasted peppers with a mixed green salad. My husband described it as a smoked salmon burrito - no subtlety, no sauce that I could find, no mingling of flavors and not a hint of spice. The greens were fresh but without dressing - dry. The other three had seared sea bass that was not fresh. Desserts were good. It is the worst dinner we've had in Minneapolis - We gave it a C before reading the review and I'm tempted to give it a D because the bill was an insult after such poorly prepared entrees.

We tried this for the first time on Sunday 11/20/05. Seated promptly. Service was a little slow (fortunately we were in no hurry). Soup was excellent! Liked the warm olive app. Veggie crepes were really tasty, too. Funky decor, nice atmosphere.

The french fries did indeed live up to the hype. The service wasn't bad. The room is pretty cool, with odd lamps and exposed bar joists, but it became very difficult to see, as they kept turning the lights down lower and lower. It was supposed to be romantic, but it just made reading the dessert menus a challenge. Definitely a place to go for late night french fries. The second time I went, I was less impressed. I had the "fresh seafood special" which was seafood. It wasn't fresh (fish shouldn't be fishy). It wasn't so special either. It was overcooked and otherwise underwhelming. At least the olives are good.

My wife and I had dinner at Barbette on Friday 29 April in the evening. We were seated promptly and the staff and service was tre' bien! However the food was another world altogether.

We both ordered the gnocchi as our main course: mine served cold and her's hot (I didn't realize that that was an option). We both instantly looked at each other on the plate presentation and quantitiy: 15 small gnocchi were served on a very large plate (no garnish). It simply looked like a half portion for only $14pp. Once eaten, the soft, runny gnocchi was a disappointment. The only up momoent was the combination of the spices and vegatables.

This is our second AND LAST visit to Barbette. Overpriced, small, and poor food quality give this restaurant a C+.

Cafe Barbette recently received a glowing review in the Star Tribune. I recently moved to the neighborhood and have had several opportunities to dine there. Most of the time, the service was horrible. HORRIBLE! Oh well, maybe they only want a cetain clientele. That's all I can figure. It bums me out because Giorgio closed across the street. Well, Lucia's is right around the corner, and Auriga would be a nice walk. Same with Giorgio on 24th and Hennepin. Well, Barbette is due to be blown out of the water. It sucks. Big time.

Cafe Barbette provided one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had, if not THE worst. The help was extremely slow (but not overworked) and apathetic. The food was overpriced based on the quality. For the first time in my life I simply threw down my money after a few bites in total disgust. I wouldn't waste my time here.

It took me many visits to get to know the real Barbette. I was not happy with my first few meals there because I thought they were too simple, not enough bang for my buck. But I eventually realized that simplicity is the key to this restaurant. To put three or four excellent items on a plate is far better than loading up the dish with fancy this-and-that. You must know food and love it to appreciate the Barbette menu. If you like chain restaurants, don't go there.

First visit to Barbette. Took a friend who had been out sick for several days. Food took over an hour to arrive. Friend's food didn't arrive - it got missed in the order. No overt appology - suggested he order something else that they could quickly make. I talked to manager, suggested that she give him a gift certificate for another time - so that he would give them another chance. Instead she just gave him his bowl of soup and glass of wine free. I've been to restaurants where our entire table would have been comp'd. She either didn't have the power to do more, or isn't very experienced. In the restaurant business you must BEG for forgiveness. We'll never be back. Food wasn't that good to overlook this rude disrespect.

If you don't have reservations you can take a seat at the bar and have access to the full menu. The food was solid from the salad through desert. Reasonable wine list and some good by the glass. Our waiter could have been a little more attentive, but service was OK. Since it is located on the edge of Uptown the parking situation is OK; we lucked out and parked at a meter right outside the restaurant. I thought the decor was hip . . . the bar had cool curving lines and walls splashed with French commercial art.

What a find for a Friday night! With no reservations, we scored a spot at the bar and were treated to interesting candlelit ambience and surprisingly tasty food. We had the salad with tuna and nicoise olives- mmm and the fondue with a banana crepe for dessert. I enjoyed the funky ambience and diverse customers and staff. It was well worth the drive from the suburbs. Very Berkeley-esque!

Fixed-menu dinner was a real treat. Soup was parsnip with roasted red pepper - yummy - and a great way to warm up! We skipped the salad and went right to our main courses: we chose seabass in miso broth (exquisite) and steak with foie gras (wonderfully flavorful). Desert was an extraordinary hazelnut icecream, and a heart-shaped chocolate tarte with raspberries. Despite the packed restaurant, the service was very good, and the ambiance (including a live singer) very romantic. We'll definitely go back to sample the regular menu in the future.

Cafe Weird? For those who remember this name, I salute you. I have seen the transformation of the Cafe Weird into the Cafe Barbette, and, to be quite honest, I like the later just as much as I liked the old place. It is an ultimate place for an uptown dweller to relax, enjoy an extensive drink menu (be that a cappuccino, beer, or wine), and enjoy brilliant creations the chef has to offer.

I've been to Barbette three times in the last two months for dinner, and it has always been worth the high price. I usually sit up to the bar, and the service is great. I haven't made it through the whole menu, but nothing's been a disappointment. My hearty thanks to the chefs for the perfect salad nicoise, the flavorful fish and pork tenderloin and the apple/pastry dessert that I could taste in my dreams one night.

I love wine and when I can go and have a great bottle at a great price well, I am there! The food has been hit or miss. I have had a great lunch and so so dinner. I don't really think of it as a dinner place. Barbette is better for wine and apps before you go to dinner or to finish the night. Service generally has been good. I have had only one time when the waitperson was slow but over all just fine. The ambience is comfortable and makes me think of the old Jitters on Nicollet.

For late-night dining or just dessert (try chocolate-espresso fondue), it doesn't get much better than Barbette. The place is named after a legendary French circus aerialist---rather apropos, balancing breakfast, lunch, dinner and lateā€¦
