5 Stars: buonissimo (by beppegrillo)

On a Sunday evening my friend and I spontaneously met up on Union Square to grab a bite to eat. I have been wanting to go to Borgo Antico but have had a hard time getting a reservation on a days notice. On a whim we decided to try...the place was packed, but luck was on our side as the host-owner giovanni was able to seat us right away at a table that was just cleared. Another women checked our bags, she was so cheerful and friendly. We really felt that we were appreciated for our business. The meal was fantastic and our waitress was kind and friendly, not overbearing. The atmosphere was lovely and it was one of those truly enjoyable dining experiences. I will celebrate my 30 birthday here with 30 friends.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food, and exception service!

5 Stars: forza italia alza latesta (by quagliagol)

After reading in City Search that this was a "The Best Italian Food," I was psyched to go for some good Italian. Turns out, there's a reason that professional food critics exist - this restaurant is great. The atmosphere is super comfortable. The service was informal and intelligent. Every thing I tasted was awesome, and just different enough to edge this place above the generic Italian food that's so easy to find in this city. I found it to be overall quite reasonable as well. The pork saltimbocca was delicious, cooked beautifully. All the pastas were fantastic, with inventive use of ingredients that tasted familiar yet new.giovanni keep up the ship !

5 Stars: good all the way (by portaaporta)

ur love affair with Borgo Antico started years ago. We had reservations at Gotham Bar & Grill and were early (we were in black tie because we were later going to The theatre to see "fuerza bruta" for a special birthday event) so we stumbled around the neighborhood until time for our reservations and discovered Borgo Antico. We found the downstairs area- with a full service bar well stocked. The host and bartender were wonderful. They made us wonderful martinis and took us upstairs to see the beautiful dining room. They had us at "olives or a twist". The food is lovely and the service is always superb. I've always said that if I lived in New York, Borgo Antico would be my regular neighborhood haunt. It's terrific.

5 Stars: best wine better food. (by feisbuk)

I love borgo antico. Last time I dined here (this past Saturday with three friends) we started our dinner with a few pasta dishes recommended to us by the General Manager. They were all delicious, but extreme raves to the Chef's ivan of what I would call the best pasta in nyc. pasta dish, are extremely satisfying plate and borgo antico homemade pasta with chestnuts and lucious creamy Italian cheeses. We decided at this point we wanted some wine. We had a conversation with the sommelier -owner giovanni who gave us some outstanding recommendations to pair with borgo regional (and seasonal) dishes. The wine here is extraordinary and very carefully chosen. in fact he received two years in a row the wine enthusiast award for wine list. Not to make this review a novel, when all is said, this charming little gem of a restaurant presents to it's guests creative and beautifully presented meals.
There is no "rush-out-the-door here". We felt like family from the moment we entered this cozy union square 'fixture", and the feeling remained throughout the evening as we tasted as many of the Chef's delicious and creative dishes as we could (portions ARE NOT small). A perfect meal for the four of us to enjoy and linger over in this very special place, lit with candlelight, satisfied people and great vibes all around. It's no small wonder why borgo antico is always packed, 7 nights a week. and celebrating 14 years in business....

Last Night I visiteBorgo Antico for the third time. I was in NYC for pleasure and work .I was truly impressed with service and the food at Borgo Antico. From a great Handsome and attractive Host to the table service, the food and the ambiance. Our Server was a young men Mattia from bergamo. The service was perfect and our meal wonderful. cheese strudel for my wife and Bufala Mozzarella with sliced ripe Tomato, half pasta Cavatelli with broccoli rabe an sausage, my wife eat pappardelle with duck ragu. The succulent roasted Cornish hen the best in town and my dear wife "La mia Dolce Vita" eat Mediterranean Branzino both perfectly and rightly cooked!. For Dessert we select Tiramisu served in a martini glass and Mixed Berries with Delicate Vanilla Italian Beans Ice Cream. and a plate of assorted cantuccini Cookies. The Wine List is well priced match with The Wine Enthusiast Restaurant Awards 2007 with extensive variety of Italian and California Wine. The beautiful mural of picture from tuscany and the staff operates like a well-rehearsed professional Broadway troupe. Borgo Antico is one of the best Italian Restaurant in NYC.! We Reccomended Borgo Antico for the true Italian Food and Service! Grazie !

4 Stars: Best Italian in NY (by Spkera)

This has to be one of my favorite Italian restaurants in NY.

The service is outstanding.

The food is incredible.

The pasta is made fresh, as is obvious by the taste and texture.

My only complaint is that this place is a bit pricey.

This place gets things right. I highly recommend this place.

5 Stars: new fall menu (by yuppidu)

I went to Borgo Antico this past weekend for the first time since the new menu, and was absolutely blown away by both the food and the service!
From the moment the owner picked up the phone until the manager wished us a good night, everyone on staff was both professional and friendly.
Our server was very knowledgeable on both the food and wines, and was really helpful in assisting us with choosing our 5 course menus (there is a suggested one, but we were free to create our own as well). The steam mussels soup, the pappardelle with duck ragu, and the aged steak were the real stand outs that evening. Most of the food we had was very rich, and the portions were fairly large; it took us a good 2 hours to finish. We never felt rushed or crowded, even as the restaurant filled up around us. The owner was our host stand as we were leaving, and seemed to take a genuine interest in how our evening had gone. All in all I thought the evening was worth every penny!
My girlfriend wants her wedding here !!

5 Stars: BORGO ANTICO IS # 1 (by dinho10)

Borgo Antico is Giovanni Iovine's union square townhouse ristorante, where chef Ivan Beacco is putting fresh gloss on Italian regional cuisine.
The beamed, softly lit dining room is upstairs, patrolled by a genial crew headed by Giovanni Iovine, the music is great.
The food :impoted bufala mozzarella, crab cake, the cheese strudel....
.Small meatball and rigatoncini and grilled monkfish are first-rate options, and chef Beacco has an elegant way with desserts, must try the chocolat souffle!. Great for large group.Bravissimo!!!

5 Stars: made in italy (by tanque)

im an Italian in New York and dining out 20 times in a month at NY's reputedly marvellous restaurants.
Borgo Antico trumps them all. In my 30's and having dined in some outstanding restaurants in europe and usa I can honestly say Borgo Anticois up there with the best of them for a total dining experience. My partner and I selected the special menu...marvellous food, exquisite steak, duck and pannacotta... all of the highest quality. excellent sommelier (giovanni) and service generally. Only criticism ...and it is minor... we had to listen to italian folk song, then around 10 the music change gor better ex. moby.
One wonders whether a regular or celeb was afforded our table whilst we, clearly not New York accent, waited for a later one. I strongly recommend this restaurant. World class and deserving of congratulations and support.

1 Stars: Avoid at all times. (by McKayL)

These people know how to rip you off. Make sure you ask how much are the specials before you order them. Typically they will cost you 2-3 times more than the most expensive items on a menu. And don?t expect a great quality for your money. The quality of food is worse than in the most Italian restaurants in a city.

5 Stars: Commercial! (by Moniq77)

This place is like an Amex commercial. Great food, cozy atmosphere, and the friendliest and most attentive service I get in NY, hands down. Everything is fantastic. The fettuccine alla bolognese, the strudel di formaggi and the insalata di spinaci... And actual friendly waiter speaking Italian - I don't feel like I am being waited on by resentful out-of-work actors. Definitely a great local find and a new favorite.

5 Stars: the real deal (by cassanodibarivecchia)

had the pleasure of having dinner Borgo Antico for my birthday earlier this year and it was one of the most memorable dining experiences I've ever had. I ordered the 3 course tasting menu with the wine pairings. My waitress was extremely friendly as she explained each dish and the reason the particular wine was chosen as a pairing. The service was top notch and always on top of everything from clearing plates, refilling water, and serving my wife first before me on each course. I was very happy that I was able to come here to celebrate my birthday. What a treat!

5 Stars: union square leader (by CAVALIERE1)

I have been dining at borgo antico for over 13 years and can honestly say that I recommend eating at BORGO ANTICO for any occasion whether it be a romantic occasion, a business dinner, a family get together or a night out with your friends. The staff will automatically tune in to the type of experience you want and will make you and your guests feel like true VIPs (GIOVANNI have got to be doing something right because they have the most friendly, knowledgeable and professional staff I have ever seen in a restaurant). The food is a true experience in Italian cuisine (giovanni and Chef ivan spend countless hours on their menu every week). the new selection of cheeses is one of the finest in the city.
You will never go wrong in choosing borgo antico.

4 Stars: Solid Italian food just south of Union Square (by kalmnyc)

Don't be put off by the exterior of this restaurant--inside is a charming interior and very tasty, fresh cuisine .

We went on a saturday afternoon, the restaurant was empty but soon filled up. The menu is close to authentic and is executed well. We started with grilled calamari salad and yellow fin tuna carpaccio. Both were excellent. The salad was fresh, the arugula and red beans complemented the calamari well. The carpaccio was razor-thin and was generously dressed with lemon and endive, just the right touch of acid to cut through the fish.

Next we had sedanini (penne with fried eggplant, oregano and mozzarella), well prepared and the mozzarella was a nice touch, and tubini (pasta with thyme tomato sauce and meatballs), a great Italian comfort food.

Our only complaint (and a minor one) was the service-- we had to flag the waiter down several times to get water although the restaurant was initially empty. Nevertheless, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for this cute restaurant.

5 Stars: UNION SQUARE BEST (by ultras70)

Borgo antico sits in a charming two-level south of union square townhouse. The room is invitingly decorated with warm yellow walls, glowing sconces, heavy mirrors and tan table top--all making for a spare, modern elegance. A nice and festive bar sits near the entrance, along with a handful of tables set aside for patrons who want to chat with Giovanni...
Over-the-top Italian food that isn't for the faint of heart or wallet...No other Italian restaurant in Manhattan achieves the same explosiveness of flavor--as cavatelli with crab meat, cheese strudel with truffle oil, or a salad of greens with baby artichokes, ageg sirloin steak.
Desserts take a light, but no less flavorful, tact: Try the saffron panna cotta, or the individual tiramisu served in a murano glass.
The wine list is superb, in fact wine enthusiast magazine just awarded Borgo Antico mayor onor.
Quality has a price, class you born with it.

5 Stars: Focused on our satisfaction (by usquarefoodie)

This is my first citysearch post. I felt compelled to review Borgo Antico after the wonderful experience I had with my friends. For the prices, I have yet to eat at a comparable Italian restaurant in nyc. It was obvious that the staff took pride in their service from start to finish. They focused on details long forgotten by trendy ny spots.
I kept thinking to myself, "I should bring so-and-so here," or "So-and-so would love this place." As for menu recommendations...just ask your waiter.

5 Stars: BADA BING!!! (by filmauro)

After reading the reviews on Borgo Antico, I knew to order any of their entrees all sounded good.
We stuck with their Anitpasto's and Pasta's and were very happy...while the portions aren't huge (but decent), they are packed with flavor and are beautifully presented. If you are a heavy eater, then order more pasta! This place is good for lunch (when we went) and you will have no wait! While I hear this place is packed at night for dinner(Page six live material) almost felt like we had the time of our life....The service I want to add, was impeccable!!!
We never mentioned it was my Dad's birthday...but I suppose somehow, our waiter overheard us and at the end of the meal we were presented with a Happy B-day dessert with dad name on it!
Now that is attentive! The restaurant is one large room, with an upstairs, overlooking 13 street. We agreed the best tables were in the corner on the main floor - so you can look out to the whole dining room, or upstairs along the railing - so you can look down on the whole restaurant.
we will go back for more party...BADA BING...

5 Stars: celebrity !! (by edyreja)

Dining at Borgo Antico was the best choice my group and I had .li was lucky to found this restaurant . what we found was amazing. Nice, cozy, and romantic place with very friendly vibe.Great table spacing.
The owner Giovanni who took care of our party. We left up to him to decide our diner and he made our evening. Everything he choose was perfect. First course(carpaccio di manzo), second (lamb shank), third( al dente pasta RUMMO from naples...dessert, wine.a great tignanello 1990..
Just what we were looking for.
i had dinner with DAVOR and JASON, an old pal of mine and also a waiter at gusto, a real gentlamen.
the cocktail list has about 10 special drink, the wine list is well done, with varietal of italian and world choice. Borgo Antico is stand out as one the top italian in manhattan.
the music was also one of the best choice(whos the deejay?).
Borgo Antico was full of celebrity the same nite we were there(drew barrymoore, jude law, roberto cavalli sipping his own vodka...benicio del toro with party of 12 friends including his EL CHE looking brother).
FANTASTIC!!!

1 Stars: Has Gone Downhill (by jason67)

This used to be a place we enjoyed for years. We have decided that we will no longer be a customer of theirs. The food has really gone down and is not consistent. The worst thing is with the decline of food quality the service also took a huge dive. Waiters clearly do not want to be there which rubs off on to the customer. Why spend money here when you are not made to feel welcome??

5 Stars: Italianissimo ! (by foodfancy)

Last friday i had my birthday party at Borgo Antico, from start to finish everything was amazing, and even if it was the first time we ate at Borgo the host and the waiters gave us the attention that only moviestar usually get. The menu that we chose from the website was a bargain for what we've got.
was only 39 dollars for a 3 course meal.
My guest, even though couldn't finish it all, loved the food so much that they are planning THEIR future parties at borgo antico you rock!

5 Stars: Simpler is better (by rickycunn)

We've never been at Borgo Antico before, but after several friends suggested the place for the atmosphere, i decided to bring my fiancee' for an anniversary dinner.
We are some kind of gourmets, since we dine out most of the time and follow all the major culinary reviews both online and in the papers, so we were mildly disappointed to see that Borgo Antico's menu was one of the most classic we have seen in the last year or so. I have to admit that, at the beginning, i almost doubted the good faith of our friends who had recommended the place. I ordered the pasta with meatballs (what a new thing, ah?) and she had the lamb shank. Wow, how wrong were we!! The pasta i had was outstanding, not only for the sauce (a little masterwork by itself) but even because it was a particular brand imported from Naples, as our waiter promptly reveled to us when he saw our delighted faces. The lamb was fork tender and flavorful, with just enough honey to balance the hearty taste of the shank and the sour baby onions.
The ambience was exactly what we were been told: warm, classy & rustic, yet unpretentious.
The desserts were also speaking by themselves: we had the delicious coffee and chocolate cake (decadent but irresistible) and the ricota cheesecake with the strawberries sauce. I have to tell that the last didn't taste like our cheesecake, was way softer and with that hint of orange that tasted just right.
On the end of the evening, our waiter offered us some dessert wine since was our anniversary. Maybe for some people wouldn't be this great deal, but we really appreciated and we'll be definitely back.

1 Stars: Large Parties Beware--I'd never go back (by subtlediva)

We had a large party of 17 and our service was horrible. Reservation at 8:00 seated at 8:45 no menus or water until 9:30, we had to beg for bread, we had to beg AGAIN to order. Reservations made well in advance and we were not discouraged from bringing a large party. Our waiter left mid- dinner and we had a new one. Apparently he was the day guy who needed to go home. People had to leave the table to go to bar to get drinks. Really dissapointing for the 25th anniversary party we were celebrating. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Our second waiter tried to save the party by giving us a round of sambucca, but it was too late. We negotiated his tip to 15% from 20% the service was really that poor. Food was ok, nothing special, certainly not up to the other reviewers snuff. I can get better Italian fine dining cuisine in Queens and better service too!

5 Stars: great for party ! (by jenniferlewis3)

One block south of Union Square you will find Borgo Antico, a charming Village Italian that offers authentic dishes, artfully prepared by Chef Ivan Beacco and graciously served by owner Giovanni Iovine and his staff. My table started with the mussels, scallops and Insalata del Borgo (organic greens, artichokes and parmesan), and then finished with the Pappardelle Porcini (wide ribbons, porcini mushroom & truffle oil), the salmon and the orata filet.
However, decision-making wasn?t easy, as everything sounded delicious. Big plus: Our waiter helped us choose a bottle of wine from their l selection that would complement all three dishes. Too full to order dessert, we declined the offer but were immediately surprised with a plate of cookies and dish of homemade ice cream. Borgo Antico's generous service and savory dishes make for a satisfying summer evening in the city.

1 Stars: Terrible Tasting Menu (by kmc25)

We used to be loyal customers of Borgo Antico. We made a reservation for Valentine's day because we thought we would have a delicious, no fuss meal. Opentable advertised their Prix Fixe menu for $39.95. We got there to disover it was $49.95. That would have been fine, had any course been enjoyable. The frise salad was awful. There was not a vegetarian option for the entree and I was told they could only do pasta with tomato sauce. I was floored that they could charge the full price for noodles and marinara sauce. Dessert was a choice between a fruit mousse and a chocolate cake that tasted like a chunk of baking chocolate. It was a very disappointing experience. We were hearing similar comments from the tables next to us, and one group left immediately after looking at the menu.

5 Stars: VALENTINE DAY THE MOST ROMANTIC.... (by acab2007)

I know valentine day can be a tragedy for many, bad winter storm, traffic, delays, late arrival of the love one.
we where at Borgo Antico on the most important day of my life , my boyfriend of 8 years finally propose to me in a great place, the food was more than tasty !!
the 49.95 that we spend was much less than other place at this level charged...expected.
the owner was great we where 20 minutes late and he still taking that with a smile.
the room was pretty full (despite the 40 no shows booked thru opentable and phone).
The menu was really tasty, the shrimps bisque to die for, the hearted shaped ravioli very flavorful.
and the dessert ...an afrodisiac....

The Italian and worldly -heavy wine list features few bottles under $30, but by-the-glass options include a flowery sauvignon blanc (Argentina) and a mellow Syrah (Italy).
When to Go
Unless you're a pal of Giovanni's, nabbing a reservation is tough,. However, showing up at 6pm and asking politely might get you a table for two in the front bar area, which has a cozy sofa and provides a choice view of the front door's action.
Celeb Hangout, like Steve Nash, Giovanni Savarese, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jimmy Fallon, Harvey Weinstein and Gina Gershon are just a few of the big names regularly spotted in the grand middle dining room, and giovanni take care of them himself.
The menu is prepared by chef ivan Beacco, a real italiano...
They also do private party upstairs.................delizioso.

1 Stars: Worst service EVER! (by chisa)

I live in Union Square and am used to the many wonderful restaurants in the area, so I was looking forward to a good Italian meal at Borgo Antico. We show up for our 2:30 reservations, for my mother's bday lunch, and find that we are the only people in the restaurant, other than a couple that was just paying their bill. We end up sitting for about 15 minutes before we get any water, utensils or bread plates while our rude waiter talked away with the other couple and despite my efforts to get his attention. We were at the point of almost walking out but decided to give the restaurant another chance. We finally get our menus and find only a brunch menu (it was 2:45). Because I was looking forward to ordering some of the items off of the regular menu, I had asked the waiter if we could order from it and he had said that they do not offer it during that time and we could only eat off of the brunch menu. My parents and I picked whatever we could from the limited options and although the meal was ok, as we are paying our bill, another gentleman walks into the restaurant, is seated and immediately handed the regular menu. I was totally in shock as I heard the waiter reviewing all of the options on the menu! I went over to ask what time the menu changed and he looks at me blankly and said 3. I could not believe that after we were waiting for so long for the menus, asked specifically if we could order from the regular menu, and were the only people in the restaurant at the time, the waiter did not offer it to us as an option. Needless to say, this was a horrible way for my mother to celebrate her birthday and I will most definitely warn all of my friends about the miserable service. To think I gave up the reservations I had at Spice Market for this place! Please take heed and dine at your own risk at Borgo Antico!

5 Stars: ITALIA MIA (by 007fbm)

My very wonderful friends planned a surprise birthday dinner for me here. The staff at Borgo Antico went out of their way to make it perfect--they added my favorite wine to their wine list, and even made a dessert with that wine for the night. They printed up a dated birthday menu with all the specials on it--we all really felt like they gave us everything we wanted and more.
On top of that, it's not too expensive, the new decor is beautiful, and the food is delicious. I might have to have my birthday dinner here every year.......

Went with my father without a reservation, and the maitre d' was very nice and sat us within 15 minutes of our arrival .Later we find out that was the owner Giovanni - we had been told that the wait would be an hour (this may be unusual). The service was impeccable and only added to the food which was exquisite. The waiter and sommelier were very helpful and not at all "snooty" as some other reviewers may have indicated. The signature beef cheek ravioli is a signature dish for a reason - it was quite remarkable, and the pecorino cheese was the perfect complement. The wine list was very extensive, covering many Italian wines, and the waiter made a great suggestion for us. The desserts were good but not great; however, the espresso was unusually fine. The hype is for a reason. Do not wait to make a reservation.for small or large group.

2 Stars: Very uneven (by suedevine)

I have enjoyed lunch here on several occasions, so decided to take my husband for dinner. It was a huge disappointment. The focaccia bread was dry with a tough overcooked crust. I chose the special pasta entree of the evening - ravioli stuffed with zucchini with red pepper sauce. The ravioli filling was flavorless and the dough was extremely salty. The red pepper sauce had no taste. Fortunately, my husband just had a salad which tasted fine, although it was unremarkable.

So my advice for this restaurant is be very careful what you order and expect uneven cooking.

5 Stars: MOLTO BENE! (by campionedelmondo)

1. the food prepared by chef beacco is first rate.
2. The music is great. But if you thought that the music was too loud you must live in a monastery.
3. Just because you're paying good money does not mean people have to kneel at your feet. Front-of-house giovanni does a great job.
4. The food almost literally speaks for itself. I can't do it justice here. It is a pure delight.
5. The service was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. We had the most patient, informed waiter I have ever come across(NIVARDO ?). He happily answered our barrage of questions covering the entire menu. We had a great sommelier who advised us on a wonderful desert and desert wine pairing. Our reservation was at 8 oclock, we finished up at 10:10pm without rush.
6. Borgo Antico has an upstairs and a downstairs. I would recommend upstairs for an 8 oclock seating, this because of the candle-light. You will begin your meal in daylight and end it in candle-light with a beautiful view of the stars above you. Truly a great experience.

Pros: food, service, ambience

5 Stars: BRAVISSIMO ! (by grandefratello)

We were a little nervous going to Borgo Antico as we had a larger group (7 people) and that size can be very hit or miss in some union square restaurants. Borgo Antico's brunch has been recommended before, so we figured that dinner couldn't be all that bad.

My family and I were pleasantly surprised by not only how delicious the meal was, but also by how friendly the service was. (reviewers were right about.) There were a few small children around and they were accommodated easily. Our group was treated as if we were the only group there (as each group was). The owner was very friendly, not only just checking in from time to time but just talking to us.

Borgo Anticois a satisfying dining experience. Save room for dessert! Their sorbet and flourless chocolate cake were amazing!

5 Stars: Time of my life!!! (by lutherblisset)

Last thursday i had my birthday party at Borgo Antico, from start to finish everything was amazing, and even if it was the first time we ate at Borgo the host and the waiters gave us the attention that only regular customers usually get. The menu that we chose from the website was a bargain for what we've got. My guest, even though couldn't finish it all, loved the food so much that they are planning THEIR future parties there!

5 Stars: A PERFECT DINNER (by giolisa)

Borgo Antico is Giovanni Iovine's romantic union square townhouse ristorante, where chef Ivan Beacco is putting fresh gloss on Italian regional cuisine.
The beamed, softly lit dining room is upstairs, patrolled by a genial crew headed by Giovanni Iovine, the music is great. Small meatball and rigatoncini and grilled monkfish are first-rate options, and chef Beacco has an elegant way with desserts, must try the chocolat souffle!. Great for large group.Bravissimo!!!

Nice place to sit and eat, but nothing really stood out for me and the wife. Food was fine, but I guess you could probably get the same stuff at any other upscale Italian place. The upstairs is nice for people watching and staff was helpful, but I don't think they'll be a return visit.

5 Stars: borgo antico is "our thing" (by bprovenzano)

I was passing by borgo antico saturday and i noticed a large group waiting at the bar to be seated. Normally i don't like crowded places but under suggestion of my wife Saveria we went in.The owner was very kind, offering us a couple of glasses of wine while we waited for our table. The charming lady at the bar gave us the "bar menu" so we could start with something different. I tried the "arancini di riso" and for a moment i thought i was back in my native Sicily. The food was simple, cooked to perfection. The best i had since i was still doing business in the Old Country. I really regret the fact that, since i have to go back to Italy, i won't be able to be with my new friends for a while.
But YOU must go to Borgo Antico to really experience "our thing"! Capisc'???

5 Stars: UNION SQUARE best (by gio13)

How many restaurant last 11 years and still surprise you? Not many. Borgo Antico is a great find, in a city always turning very fast, borgo antico seat real easy, the owner Giovanni is extremly accomodting, I had in this place my first date, my wedding and next week the bathmitzva for my daugther. The new chef, Ivan is from Trieste, and I can describe how good the food is you have to try, my word.
the wine list is really good, with great varietal of grapes.
most of the wait staff are working there for years, they will recognize you at your second visit....bene.

After a daily workout I had to meet my wife and her parents for dinner. Without making any plans I found a Nice Italian restaraunt located on 13th st in union square.
The space was calming and the staff and general atmosphere only complimented my first impression of the place. The food was perfect and service was excellent. A great time.

1 Stars: NO parties (by jessicaann)

Owner Giovanni has been in NYC since 1995 and thinks he can treat New Yorkers with snobbery, belittling customers. The food isn't even great, it's below average. My girlfriend reserved to have her wedding party there and after Giovanni promised her the space, he decided to mention that he may have a bigger party that he would rather cater to on that same day and wouldn't be able to guarantee her anything. He said he would ship our party off to Brooklyn to his partner's restaurant 'Future' in Park Slope. We explained that we were from Manhattan and wanted to have our party in Manhattan not in Brooklyn. He laughed as he didn't care and insisted. He also doesn't listen to what his customer needs are and spends more time talking. There are dozens of better Italian restaurants with friendlier management that don't believe they are better than New Yorkers.

4 Stars: Impressive Italian Food (by mistersandman)

THIS is how Italian food is supposed to be! I am an Italian born and raised, moved to NY a year ago. Real Italian food does NOT have so much seasoning/condiments. The dishes prepared here are delicate and balanced, the ambience tasteful. A bit pricey, but good researched cuisine always is.

The ambiance of this restaurant makes you feel like you've arrived in heaven and you never want to leave. Intimate dinner upstairs, dessert on the sidewalk as you take in all the nuisance of New York City living are experiences that give a feeling you are doing much more than just dining out. Here's where feeling special becomes something a little bit more erotic or at least an experience like no other.

3 Stars: Could of been good (by shania18)

I went here with 4 friends for a birthday dinner, we were late for our reservation but the host was great, very understanding and friendly. However, our waiter was much less friendly...we kept having to ask to have our orders taken and he was rude when all of us did not order 3 courses (we did however have 2 bottles of wine and dessert). We were a young crowd and he was obviously annoyed that we were not going to be ordering the most expensive items (although our bill was $200). He took forever to offer us coffee and dessert and then took forever to give us the bill. The food was excellent (a little pricey for what you get), but this waiter definitely put a damper on the evening. Go for good food and pleasant atmosphere, not the wait staff.

1 Stars: WORST dining experience - APPALLING service (by mikj)

This was THE worst dining experience in my life. Our server was so blatantly rude, belligerent and condescending on several occasions that I personally felt abused. For instance, when my friend politely explained that her dish was really salty, she grudgingly took the dish from the table and then came back to tell us that she tasted the dish in the kitchen and didn't know what my friend was talking about as it wasn't salty at all. Soon after, as my friend was quickly trying to decide on an alternative dish, our server stated, "I don't care what you decide." I would never take the time to write a review unless I felt really strongly about my experience and this experience was despicable.

5 Stars: must try now !! (by ibeacco)

Just one block south of Union Square you will find Borgo Antico, a charming Village Italian that offers authentic dishes, artfully prepared by Chef Giuliano Matarese and graciously served by owner Giovanni Iovine and his staff. My table started with the mussels, scallops and Insalata del Borgo (organic greens, artichokes and parmesan), and then finished with the Pappardelle Porcini (wide ribbons, porcini mushroom & truffle oil), the salmon and Polipetti alla Luciana (baby octopus, capers-olive-tomato sauce, grilled polenta). However, decision-making wasnt easy, as everything sounded delicious.

Big plus: Our waiter helped us choose a bottle of wine from their large selection that would complement all three dishes. Too full to order dessert, we declined the offer but were immediately surprised with a plate of cookies and dish of homemade ice cream. Borgo Antico's generous service and savory dishes make for a satisfying summer evening in the city.

5 Stars: We will be back!!! (by alexbrklyn)

Dining at Borgo Antico was the one of the best out-of-the room activities my wife and I had on our short Honeymoon in the Capital Town Of The World. We were lucky to found this restaurant close to our hotel. We did not have a lot of time to search around. But what we found was amazing. Nice, cozy, and romantic place with very friendly vibe. We got table on the second floor next to window. Great table. Waiter who took care of us was on the ball. Easy going and not pretentious. We left up to him to decide our diner and he made our evening. Everything he choose was perfect. Fist course, second, third...desert, wine...Just what we were looking for. People, they know pasta. Next trip to NY and we'll be there again.

2 Stars: Not here you don't (by nisha219)

Over much deliberation for the right place I decided to celebrate my birthday party with a big group of friends and family at Borgio Antico because the owner himself called me concerning the cake I had wanted to bring. What a waste of time and money. The service was not hit or miss. It just simply did not exsist. My party was ignored the entire time. We waited an hour and forty five minutes before any food was served. It was very hot and stuffy as there was no air condition or fan to cool folks off. During dinner I kept thinking of different restaurants in New York City I could have went to instead of Borgio Antico. Looks can be decieving. Please do not waste your time McDonalds has better service.

5 Stars: A real treasure (by tristan1865)

The menu is basically classic Italian, prepared with care and imaginationl the chef preserves the individuality of his ingredients, always delivering a treat to the palate. The downstairs bar is pleasant, but the upstairs main dining room is special: a large, tall room, with brick walls ornamented with spaced wooden pilasters--an effect both rustic and elegant. Service is polite and expeditious.

5 Stars: A Village Favorite (by stoppard)

Down the steps to Borgo Antico is an entry to a wonderful experience. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and efficient. The wine list is well selected and provides a range of offerings with fair pricing. Dining downstairs allows for a more relaxed environment with the same great food.
