My son arranged for my wife and I to have a pleasent dinner here before a theater engagement as part of our 50 wedding anniversary weekend celebration in NYC.

He arranged everything with Ari one of the owners and the evening went smoother than a vintage Rolex.

From the Champeign start to the after dinner drinks it all flowed smoothly and was a smooth show.

Thanks to everyone involved from the Chef, our waitress and Ari.

Pros: Excelent food & service, Great management,

Cons: a little noisy at times but not a poblem

.

I can't believe the choices in their menu. They had a cheeseburger that suprised me on how delicious it can be. Very attentive staff. Great crab cakes. I just would like everyone to go and enjoy.

I work very close to Thalia, and it's just a no-brainer. This is one of the few places I know of that has been around for a while (at least for the 6 years I've been working in the area), and that hasn't gone downhill, or lost their enthusiasm to deliver good food and service at a reasonable price.

I have so many favorite dishes here: the duxelle ravioli with mushrooms, the crabcake sandwich, the braised short rib.

They also have a takeout place right around the corner, and the quality is just as good.

Whomever manages this place really has their act together.

The ambiance in the restaurant is also very nice. Perfectly soft lighting, and the tables are not too close together.

The restaurant is lovely and the food is of a very high calibre. But the place I go to much more often is their take out shop right next to the restaurant. It's a fantastic place to pick up lunch. They have a delicious variety of pre=made sandwiches and salads. They also have lunch-size portions of pasta dishes and about five different soups. The selection of sandwiches and salads is the same every day, but the soup menu changes every day. The ingredients are high quality and fresh. Each sandwich is prepared on just the right bread to enhance the flavor. Their backed good are also rich and delicious.

This gorgeous restaurant in Hell's Kitchen--not far from the Theater District--is a great place for a pre- or post-show dinner. The food is excellent. I've had a tasty beet and goat cheese salad, gnocchi, and some fish there. All were excellent. The brunch is also great. And, the place offers a really good value! Check it out!

Thalia Restaurant is a really nice restaurant, the food is delicious, although a bit expensive. The drinks are really really good.

Try Seared Coho Salmon, Mushroom Duxelle Ravioli and to finish up Dark Chocolate Mousse.

My husband and I ate here after a matinee show and had really excellent food. Our reservation was for 5:30 but we were able to be seated early (restaurant was still empty). The service was very prompt and polite. I had a tasty beet and goat cheese salad and really delicious, well-cooked skate with vegetables; my husband had a fresh mozzarella appetizer (good cheese, so-so tomatoes, but it is mid-October) and the most amazing gnocchi. So light and soft and fragile, they must have been half cheese. Delicious! A nice shared dessert and two glasses of wine for about $100. The menu might not be earthy-shatteringly innovative -- no foams or infusions or miso anything -- but really a good value for well-prepared food in the theatre district. Nice ambience too.

My family and I ate there before a recent Sunday matinee. Given how expensive brunch has gotten, it is refreshing to find one with meals under $15 that include juice/mimosa. While there are better places at twice the cost, it was a refreshing, plesant way to start the day on Broadway. Interesting dishes included a fine crab meat and asparagus omelette, vanilla french toast and great banana and strawberry pancakes. Highly recommended for a reasonable brunch spot in midtown!

I went here for Restaurant Week so I got a cheaper deal. The portions are pretty small, but that's what you expect for fine dining in NY. I enjoyed the drinks and the service was impeccable.

My wife and I ate there pre-show and they had some glitches in the service but we would go back for another try. We ordered a raw sampler, three appetizers and a side dish. We told them to bring them in any order as soon as they were ready. With tiny tables, they brought out EVERYTHING at once. I sent back the raw to chill out until there was room and we were swamped with the rest of the stuff. This kind of thing in inexcusable and if the stuff didn't look so good, I would have left. The waiter needs to have better control over the staging of courses and the food delivery guys need to be better trained. Onto the good stuff! The mussels, mozzarella and the raw plate were really good. The menu looks very interesting and we will be back to taste some more.

I went to to Thalia for brunch, ordered an omelette with asparagus and crab meat. It was more like a flap of egg with cold crab meat, asparagus and tomato inside. This brunch entree comes with a choice of drink.. wine, fresh squeezed juice. I ordered a "fresh squeezed" grapefruit juice, when it came it tasted fermented. Disgustingly acidic. When i asked the waiter about this funny taste, he recognized it has gone bad, took my drink and quickly came back with a new one. When i asked him if it was fresh squeezed, it says it may have been fresh squeezed an hour ago. A juice does NOT ferment in 1 hour! When asked to speak to the manager, he admits the juices are squeezed last night and he simply said he doesn't know what went wrong, that the entire container of which the juice came from is okay. He even says the bartender tastes the juice in the morning! He implied that I don't know what i'm talking about. So he just said "I don't know".

This just disgusts me in how the management does not even acknowledge their wrong doing, and i had to suffer through a disgusting taste of spoiled juice.

I would not wish this experience upon anyone. I went to this restaurant based on nice reviews.I expected quality food, because its not a "cheap" place. But i don't know what is so nice about it other than decor.

All of the greatness of this place lies in its ambiance; great lighting, chic decor, classy yet unpretentious atmosphere. The service was also very attentive and the seating prompt.

However, you'd never come here for the food. Though the food itself was great, the menu selection is pretty mediocre and limited. Nothing on the menu really jumped out at me, which isn't a great thing when you're paying $20+ for an entree with no side.

So, come here for the great atmosphere, for a nice place to lounge and have good drinks, but don't come here for excellent food.

Great food. Everyone in our party of six enjoyed their meal. The prices were quite reasonable for NYC. The only negative was that the bathroom wasn't very clean

I had to go here for a lunch meeting and the food was good, but the service was pretty bad. They were acting like they were really busy, but in fact, the restaurant was nearly empty. Since we only saw our waiter about 2 times we had to ask the other wait staff when we needed something. He even took forever to take the check. So, the food is good, but the service is slow!

My husband and I went for pre-theater dinner. I informed the waitress that we were going to a show and the food came out very quickly. The appetizers were good, my husband had the cream of mushroom soup and I have the mozz & tomato salad. Our entrees were below average. I had the crab cakes, do not recommend. My husband had the strip steak, he hated the way it was seasoned. I would not recommend. Get a slice of pizza at Ray's before your show and go someplace not in Time Sq/ Theather District for a late dinner.

Thalia is eye candy both from the street and being on the inside. Towering ceiling throughout, beautiful lighting and a really well designed layout. The menu, some call it new American, I guess that is about right. There are choices on the menu for just about anyone: meat or vege lover. The food is good, but it doesn't impress. It's reasonably priced for the city and the area. We didn't get the WOW we were hoping for. Ordered the side of Thalia fries which we thought might be spiced or otherwise special since they put their own name to the side dish. But they were just freakin fries. I don't even think there was salt on them. So I can't suggest ordering them -- unless you want to spend big bucks on fries. Service was very good and the wine was generous.

I have gone to Thalia cafe every day for the past maybe 5 years - and now every morning a large group of high school kids are in there, and they (the employees) do not pay attention to regular customers and I WILL NEVER STOP IN HERE AGAIN. it is insane and ridiculous and highly unprofessional.

This place really does have it all..
I live down the street and have done everything from business meetings to a late night with the girls there... the actual restaurant is beautiful but not overdone.

things you have to try: the lobster eggs benedict at brunch, the scallops and tiramisu at dinner, and the burger if you are in the lounge area.

thalia is a 'must try' in midtown!!

This restaurnat was the worst. I went here to celebrate a birthday with 3 of my friends. The food was so so (small portions) and the service was horrible. We had to continually ask for more water and wait FOREVER for our food to come. So when it came time to pay the bill we left a 10% tip. The waiter actually didn't even deserve a tip so we thought 10% was generous since the service was so horrible. The waiter obviously didn't like his tip becasue the manager of the restaurant came over to our table and told us that out tip was UNACCEPTABLE. She said 20% is the norm and we were not welcomed back to Thalia ever again!!! She also told us that she recognized us and that we "caused trouble" in the restaurant before. This was a complete lie since it was our fist time in Thalia. She also went on to tell us how the waiter overheard parts of our conversation!!! The whole situation ws unbelieveable. She lectured us for over 1/2 hour and then started yelling. Out bill was over $200 and this is the way we were treated!!!! The manger's name was JENNIFER. She was very unprofessional and absoluteley rude. DO NOT GO HERE unless you intend on leaving minimum 20% tip for horrible service otherwise you will be embarassed the way we were. There are so many better restaurants in midtown to go to. Avoid this horrible place!!!!!

I will be sure to tell everyone and post everywhere NEVER to go to that place. It is awful and has bad employees and owners.

Thalia will forever be a special place to me for many reasons. On Thursday I had dinner there with my then boyfriend. We had planned a trip to NYC and he had chosen everything on the trip from the Broadway shows to the hotel to our dining destinations....and Thalia was on his list of places for us to visit.
He had a heard about Thalia thru a friend's recommendation and was the reason for his choice to dine here. The place is gorgeous so we wanted to fully enjoy the night which is why instead of going right to our table we wanted to first enjoy cocktails in the cozy front lounge. After a drink we went into the dining room to our quiet little table on the upper seating area. It was private and perfect. The waiter we had was wonderful, attentive and charming. He helped us make appetizer and dinner selections and we enjoyed them all. The Salmon dish is unique and my husband had the Lamb Shank which was so good the meat fell from the bone. Althought the food and wine we had was perfect, what makes the night so special is that my husband PROPOSED to me! Right at our table! (of course I said YES, I dont want to end up an OLD MAID!! :) The next thing I know, two of the managers came over with champagne for us on the house and congratulated us on our engagement. How nice and how special we felt. We even received a round of applause! All in all, Thalia was a wonderful experience....from the ambiance to the food to the way the managerial and service staff treated us and of course.... to the fact that I am soon to be married. Visit Thalia...and ENJOY!

The waiters and managers are not there to serve you. They are too busy listening to your conversations and criticize you for how much you tip them. My girl friends and I were excited to go to dinner at Thalia tonight. We were there for a while and had many different conversations. The service was fine and the food was good. Then the check came, yes it was expensive but we expected that. We paid the bill and might have miscalculated the tip. This woman, a manager she says, comes to us and accuses us of being there before and purposely wanting to tip badly because of some conversation we had. I was willing to increase the tip on my part to fix the situation but the manager said we are not welcome there any more. We had a great time until this woman ruined our night. Extremely rude. People like her gives NYC a bad name of having rude and unbarable people. You have to be very careful about what you say and do in this restaurant. The waiters are all listening into your conversations. Who knows how they have treated other customers. I would never want to go to Thalia ever again. I don't know how the owners allow such people to work in their restaurant. The food is great though. It's too bad that the service is so horrible. It ruins the entire experience. There are so many better restaurants in NYC. I suggest you try somewhere else. You are not missing anything by not going to Thalia.

I would say I don't understand some of these reviews if I didn't have my own experiences serving tourists, as well as clueless members of the pre-theatre crowd. Leave it to people who don't know how to behave in a restaurant, who are rude and demanding and don't tip, to be the first to criticize. They should stick to Burger King and leave the real establishments to others

DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! My wife and I decided to try this restaurant after a suggestion from a bartender. The place seemed really romantic from the outside and inside; However. The hostess seemed angry that we had asked her for a table and offered us no greeting. When we sat down, we ordered two cocktails that tasted absolutly horrible. Our waitress was extremely rude to us, and actually charged us for the cocktails that we didn't drink. When we spoke to a manger about the situation, they didn't care that we, the customers, were not satisfied, she still made us pay for the drinks. The food was o.k. nothing spectacular. On top of that, I was ripped off. I looked at my credit card statement the next day, and the waitress had charged me twice for over $300. In fact, the proper amount was not even charged. We called the next day to inform them and to make them remove the charge, and a MANAGER said I would have to take this up with the accountant. A manager didn't have the knowledge to fix this problem. She had stated that this happens all the time. How could you consistantly rip people off. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, and would rather buy a hotdog from a vender than go to Thalia's. Take our advice and go elsewhere.

Cons: Worst restaurant ever

We had drinks and oysters after the show and loved it! Great atmosphere, prompt, knowledgable service, excellent location.

I made an online reservation & the rude hostess said they didn't have and didn't offer any apologies, a couple who walked in front of me got seated right away w/no reservation (i later found out)..I had to ask how long of a wait, finally i gave up & we went to eat at the bar - still no love from the bartender, the customer next to us had to wave her wine glass in the air till finally some manager type who was sitting near the bar got up and helped her & then us - the bartender never offer us a refill or water...the food came and was very tasty but the service makes me not want to recommend this place at all!

This is Rachel Rays restaurant correct? Well, she has done a fabulous job. Although, the service was slow, the drinks and apps were amazing. I went with a friend one night for a drink and had a great time. The seating (cushy couches) was very comfortable. It was cold outside and the seasonal cocktails fit the weather perfectly. We ordered calamari was cooked perfectly. Great, fun, after work or romantic restaurant. Great for drinks and apps or a dinner! I hear brunch is great as well, although I have never been.

I live across the street from Thalia. I've been here a BUNCH of times over the past 5 years BUT only b/c it is across the street. The service is CONSISTENTLY awful ... I was just there for dinner a few nights ago & our waitress was a complete joke ~ no personality and actually, quite testy. The food is just OK ... some dishes are quite bland. The oysters are amazing, the tartares are pretty good .. the mushroom polenta is probably the best thing on the menu. I return there b/c it's convenient and I like the setting ... dark, fun people watching, and romantic. I wouldn't go there for a large dinner celebration or any "occassion".

FANTASTIC. The perfect combination of food, service and atmosphere. After hearing rave reviews from several of my friends and coworkers I decided to find out what the buzz was all about. We went there for dinner before a Broadway show. Even though the restaurant was completely packed the food came out fast and the service was very attentive. The food was incredible- now I know what all my colleagues were talking about. My complements to the chef for the Diver Sea Scallops and the Lamb-the beet risotto was amazing! Thank you for such a lovely relaxing dinner to catch up with old friends. We loved Thalia so much we came back for a cocktail after the show! If you're in town for the Holidays or to see a Broadway production, this hip restaurant is a must!

I went to Thalia and had a horrific expirence
The Restaurant looked nice and hip on the outside
on the inside is a different matter......
The service is a like a 3 ring circus and the cooking is a TOTAL JOKE
where did this so-called chef come from? Arbys? White Castle? Best Buy?
THIS PLACE IS A A TOTAL DISASTER
Appitizers took 30 minutes
Entree's 1 missing
time for the missing entree to finally show up 20 minutes later
This is on my top 10 worst places to dine in NYC

Thalia managment does no care about anything and it shows
either does the * so called CHEF * who cooks out of an instant box and a cookbook

STAY AWAY!

i went to thalia for restaurant week with my bf and had a wonderful time. the environment was very relaxed and i thought the decor was cute. my bf and i are both born and raised new yorkers so it seemed weird being in the theatre district at first. the crowd was a little strange but other than that, the service, ambience, food was pretty good. my bf had the softshell crab and ostrich. i wasnt crazY about my appetizer but my entree, the scallops were pretty good. i also enjoyed the strawberry shortcake i had for dessert. it was an interesting combination of sweet and salty and definitely a unique taste.

Amazing restaurant, great food (try the Thalia Burger), perfect service and on top of all that, the owner Avi is one of the best guys you'll ever meet. Highly reccomended!

Overrated but oh so pretty around here. The decor is beautiful, as are the patrons, wait staff, and even the food (presentation). Within a few bites the food was no better than any of the subpar restaurants in the area. I think this restaurant would function better as a relaxing lounge than it does as a trendy restaurant.

This place is pretty deceiving... it's a gorgeous place in a great location and wonderful ambiance. Service was on par but not wonderful. My biggest complaint was the un-tasty food although presented well. I had the salmon dish and while it was fine, for the price paid, I expected it to have some type of flavor. It won't break the bank but I also wouldnt come back for the food.

I had seen this restaurant on The Food Channel. I lived nearby, but had never eaten here. I took my mother here for Mother's Day. I was very excited about their brunch, having seen it on Rachel Ray's show. The staff here is very good. Our reservations were intact, and we were seated the minute we walked in. The place was packed, but it didn't effect our service or getting our food/drinks promptly. The portions are not huge, but they do include an alcoholic beverage or fresh juice, so that made up for it. I highly recommend the eggs benedict or the fresh seared tuna salad. This would be a nice place to go after the theatre for a drink!

we celebrated our friend's engagement here, great spot for a "small" group of 12. brunch menu had nice variety to choose from, miniblueberrrymuffins better than some bakeries, & included in their price mimosa/bloody mary's were nice. but svc SUCKED big time. & we had 2 persons serving us. they messed up our orders, the eggs came out cold, the chicken sandwich fell apart, & forget it if you want water refills. they were only attentative to see if we wanted any more bar drinks. me big mouth complained. anyway, nice place for brunch for selection & under $20 meals & desserts were great (3 flavors for creme brulee!!), funky restrooms. but sorry can't tip well for poor svc

My husband and I enjoy Sangria. We were looking forward to nice glass of Sangria when we arrived. The space is nice but when we order our drink we were in for a surprise. We asked the server for two glasses with a splash of Southern Comfort and Grand Marnier. 10 minutes later our drinks arrive and were not what we asked for. We thought this a prelude to what the evening will be like. So my husband made up an excuse so we can leave. When we asked for the check TO OUR SURPRISE the check was $40!!! WE were charged for two glasses of sangria and 4 shots... Needless to say we will never return.

We ate here in March, 2006 and ordered the pre-theatre 3-course dinner with wine flight. I had the tuna tartare with sake, mushroom ravioli with pinot noir, and the chocolate sampler with a dessert wine for $49. The first 2 courses were very good, but the chocolate sampler was too rich for me and the dessert wine far too sweet. My husband had the mesclun, salmon, and ice cream and he enjoyed all 3 courses. I would like to return and try some of the other menu items when I don't have to rush off to a show. Fast service. I think the restaurant was too loud (when full) to be romantic.

Went to Thalia on 2/4, our group was 2 couples. Beautiful space and we were seated immediately. Tables a bit close together, but did not have difficulty hearing each other. Smaller menu, but everyone found something they liked. I had a salad (very good, nice portion) and the duck - which was FANTASTIC, some of the best I've had. Overall, I recommend Thalia as a nice place to go for dinner or a quiet drink after.

Tuna app was too small, but tasty. Mussels were plentiful, but sandy. Lamb was also plentiful, but not great- rissoto was gorgeous but not tasty. The Pumkin Scallops were great, and the kale was perfect. Sorbets were too strong and upside down pineapple cake was yummy. SO, what does this all mean. It means that if my date and I were one person, the meal would have been PERFECT. Too bad the perfect meal was my appetizer, my entree and her dessert. Restaurant week got us in the door, the normal prices will keep us out- but tourists and hipsters will keep them afloat. Cool, hip and spacious Thalia is, but a great spot it isn't.

Thank you Avi for taking care of my family/dad's b/day. The brunch menu was excellent - great choices, my kids loved the blueberry mini muffins! The chicken & crabcake sandwiches were delish. Lobster & eggs & eggs benedict were also good. We finally found a nice place with good food for brunch - so many others disappoint! Tho $15 for my kids shared butter & pasta was a bit pricey. SUM IT: you have to try this place for brunch, can't speak for dinner. & free parking is not bad if you get in early enough to walk around before your brunch.

A friend of mine suggested Thalia because of its location to the theater of the show we were seeing that night and we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere was truly New York. The host was gracious and we were greeted by a very friendly and accomodating waitress. Although she was obviously busy, she was helpful in describing certain items on the menu and suggested a duck dish that was out of this world. She even suggested a wine to accompany the duck and it was perfect. My husband had a scallop dish that was also excellent. The staff seemed friendly to customers and well as each other and we were very impressed with how well everyone seemed to work together, even in such a busy atmosphere. I would recommend Thalia to anyone, it was wonderful and set us in great mood to see our show.

Great location. The service has always been mediocre. The hamburgers were once really good, the fries once delicious with little bits of crisp tasty herbs covering them. We looked forward to lunch....LOOK AGAIN! The service went Ker-Plop. From the moment we sat down, our waitress treated us as though we were an inconvenience. We waited 40 minutes for our burgers hoping someone would fill our water glass. Finally the burgers arrived. To our surprise, they were uniquely prepared (twice-baked). Once on the grill for 15 minutes, then for another 25 minutes under a food warmer. They were unique! If you want a great burger at half the price go to The Corner Bistro in Greenwich Village. When in the theatre district, try McHales and be prepared for plenty of food. Better yet, get a great sandwich at Carve on 47th St and 8th Ave..

Quiet impressed by the look and feel of the place when entered, seems to attract a wide and varied crowd which I like to see. We get seated and the whole experience changed, we had not sat down 5 minutes and the tablle staff moved our table to reset another table without a reference to us and did not put it back in place once completed. We proceeded to order a couple of drinks and our meal. We waited 35 minutes before any food was served, this was after complaining to the waitress who seemed to be overwhelmed dealing with the number of tables. Once the food was received one meal was cold and had to be sent back to be reheated as seemed that one meal had been left to the side while the other was being prepared. Overall an unsatisfactory experience from a service, food and cost perspective.

I live in the area and eat at Thalia at least twice a week. The seafood is amazing and their brunch is excellent. I've probably had everything on the menu and have never been dissapointed. Oysters, mussels, shrimp cocktail (which are enormous) are great. Excellent wine list. A tremendous selection of scotch. I prefer to sit in the lounge area or at the bar, as the service is quicker and the space is more attractive. By far the best restaurant in the Theater District.

I was recently in there a couple of days ago, and I was glad to see this spot still busy. It's nice to go into a place and know what the food is. I hate going into places where either the food is too small or they are trying to be too creative and the main item of the dish is hidden. The bar is a great place to hang out with friends, the service at the bar is pretty fast. Every Thursday my friends and I meet up there for drinks and dinner. If you haven't been you got to go.
