Great Stylist! I'm so happy to finally have someone I can trust and that does not need much direction. When you leave a Salon you want to look great and feel every dollar you spent was worth it. I not only felt great but looked it too! ALL I WANT TO SAY IS THANK YOU JC!

I have been going to Panyc for years, following them from location to location... and now loving the new spot on 17th. In a non-descript typical Flatiron building, a stark yet comfortable salon awaits, you wouldnt know it as you take a tiny dingy elevator up. The staff is so accomodating, and all I can say is JC is AMAZING! I have had nightmares occur when I've needed to get a touch up for an upcoming event and pop into a salon that will take a walk-in, or when bridemaids hair goes horribly WRONG! I always run back to JC who manages to fix me right up! I cant say enough about these guys!!

PAULINE is a senior colorist at PANYC and she does an amazing job! I live in the area and have been bouncing around from salon to salon; never really finding the right colorist...until now. I walked past PANYC several times and finally decided to give it a try. I chose PAULINE because she is a senior colorist and her prices are a bit lower than the master level. The consulation was top notch and the end result even better. She is such a sweet girl and really knows what she's doing. You can tell she's got lots of experience. I'VE FINALLY FOUND THE ONE!!!

I'm from Seattle and have just these past two months started living in NYC. Haircuts are my one big splurge, even in my home town I'd pay 60$ for a cut and 120$ for a color! so I was hoping to find a least similar prices in New York.

I found Panyc on Citysearch and called to see when they had an opening. He first offered a SAME DAY CUT for 90$, and when I asked if there was anything cheaper he offered a same day 75$ FOR A CUT. Perfect.

I headed over the slightly SKETCHY neighborhood and even more sketchy building where you have to ring up to have them let you in and then take a 3x3 foot elevator ride up to the fifth floor.

However as soon as I got up into the salon my confidence was restored. It's big and open, with lots of light and sparse, but eclectic decor.

There WEREN'T THAT MANY PEOPLE around, probably because it was a Wednesday afternoon, but the staff welcomed me right in.

I had a really relaxing shampoo and SIMON took me to the chair promptly at 4. What a sweet guy! He was really ATTENTIVE to what I asked for. I WANTED TO TAKE OFF A GOOD SIX INCHES so he really coached me through it and all the changes that might occur to my hair. He started snipping and after about 15 minutes I FELL ASLEEP! He didn't wake me up, he simply cradled my head and proceeded to give me great haircut. When I woke up he had very timidly took off length and said that if I decided I wanted it shorter later in the week I could get a trim for free. He's great and really gentle. I think I will go back and get it a little shorter, mainly just to hang out at the salon a little more! With a generous tip for Simon and the shampoo girl my total came to 95$.

Ignore the bad reviews, this place is great.

I am here to say that Pauline is the absolute best hairstylist in THE WORLD! She started doing my hair about 2 years ago and it has been perfect everytime. She is truly passionate about what she does and it shows in her work. I would recommend her to anyone that wants their hair done right.

Marylou, PJ and Pauly have come a long way from the little space they began with in the East Village to the current loft on West 17th. This is because they work hard, know the business, make good business decisions and choose to provide great service at prices clients can afford, instead of trying to ""wow"" their clientele with a lot of idiotic extras (i.e. a cheap glasses of wine, live people handing you toilet paper in the bathroom instead of leaving you alone to rip it off the cob by yourself, which is far preferable...). PANYC is a down-to-earth Salon that makes everyone and anyone, regardless of age, sexual preference and attitude feel really comfortable. No matter what style you are looking for, whether you're conservative or looking to do something completely wild, you will get what you came for and feel you are in competent and creative hands. Marylou has got to be one of the best colorists in New York and PJ, Michael, Pauley, Sonia are a fantastic line up of cutters. Strangers stop me in the street to admire my color and hair all the time and I tell them: ""Stay calm and PANYC,""

I have been going to PANYC for years to get my hair cut, and I??ve always been more than satisfied with the results. I recently decided to start coloring my hair and was told by one of the receptionists that PAULINE was the girl to see. She came highly recommended, mainly because she??s been doing it for so many years and has tons of experience. I was nervous at first because I??m very picky about my hair, and I??ve had bad experiences in the past with people who do not listen to what I want. Pauline paid careful attention to what I asked for and made suggestions appropriately, but did not force her ideas on me. In short, because I could go on all day about how great she is, my hair came out amazing and I received numerous compliments from friends and family, even from strangers! Pauline is diligent and efficient, but besides the quality of her work, she is genuinely nice. So why pay more seeing a master level colorist when you can see Pauline and get the same results in literally half the time? If you??re looking to color your hair, I absolutely without a doubt recommend seeing PAULINE over any one else at the salon.

Ok so here's what you need to know.

First I am about as rational as a 5 year old child when it comes to my hair. I NEVER want to cut it or fuss with it. In fact, there are plenty of days when I find that I actually have mats that resemble dread locks in the back of my head at the bottom. Ok, that's a little embarrassing but it needs to be said. I only brush it occasionally and it usually looks long and a little ragged which can come off as a little charming - which I like.

So, I realized that I need a hair color treatment for the summer just to liven things up and I heard about this place Panyc (cute, paNYC) Uh, it took me a while to get it.

Anyway, I get there after calling for directions while standing right outside the entrance (it IS hard to spot, but the receptionist was more than patient) and I sit in the chair musing at how my moderately ragged hair looks DRAMATICALLY more ragged when compared with all the perfectly styled heads of hair in the place. But, I still maintain my resistance to cut my hair... I'm just here for color. I was a little nervous when the stylist walked up but I have one word for you:

SONIA

If you come here ask for her.

She comes trotting up with blown out feathery blond short hair a huge smile and she starts examining my treacherous locks with a look of intention. She charms me right from the start, but the real achievement was my hair (I'm easily charmed... it's a curse). ;)

She immediately sees that a good 4 inches of my hair is basically dead and I REFUSE to let her cut it. This is huge. For a hair stylist to actually listen to me and NOT cut off my dead ends is really remarkable and I'm sure it was very difficult for her as a professional. Plus, I wanted color which means that she had to work veritable magic to get the color even from the healthy roots all the way down to the dried out ends. She did it like it was nothing! Truly amazing.

I left with rich amazing golden brown for the summer (think coffee with soy milk that has been swirled with caramel and sprinkled with golden powder... yeah, delicious). And I even got a few really good tips for tying to maintain my hair the way it is.

She was patient with my neurosis and anxiety about my hair and I felt completely comfortable and confident. She listened and used her knowledge to work with me and have me leave looking amazing.

I even got bonus tips for my skin care - no joke! My skin looks amazing too.

It's 100% worth the price and Sonia will do whatever you need. Trust me, if she could make my hair work she's the hair whisperer.

Go there.

Pros: Sonia is amazing

Cons: hard to see the front door

A couple weeks ago, I went to Panyc Salon because I was in desperate need of a re-do on my color. I had been highlighting my hair for a long time. It got to the point were I decided to leave my stylist of ten years because my was ORANGE and no matter how many times I brought it up, it always turned out the same tone. After meeting Sonia, I felt even better about my decision. She spent a half hour on our consultation, and explained how long it would take to get my hair were I wanted it to be. After mixing four bowls of color of low-lights and high-lights, she completely changed my hair from that orange toned mess to the perfect color. I Found my stylist, I found my salon!!! Thank You Sonia

Went to Mary Lou for color two days ago, let's put it this way my color was a bleached out destroyed mess. I told her I wanted it to be healthy and a little darker with as little bleach as possible, she listened to everything I had to say and really is an expert at what she does. After hours of meticulous work it was finished. I sat with it overnight and decided I needed I little tweaking and it wasnt exactly what I wanted, Mary Loud was absolutely willing to fix it to whatever I wanted that day and it turned out fabulous. I have found a new salon I will be going to and recommend it to everyone. Expect to come out with fabulous hair and be catered to. GREAT SALON!

I would recommend Chris for a cut. I have thick, wavy and difficult hair and he gave me a flattering cut that held its shape for a few months. He seemed bored and rude though, and did a very lazy job at blow-drying my hair out. I left the salon with a lot of fly aways that I think could have been avoided if he took my time blow-drying my hair or if he bothered to put another product or two in my hair.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Michael cut my hair yesterday. He was fab, with no attitude, and he really took time to think about what was right for my hair. I was impressed and my hair looked great. and the price (shampoo, cut and blodry) was affordable. I look forward to telling people about the salon. I hope they get a sign outside to announce their presence. They deserve it.

This was my first time here and I was extremely pleased with the result. I got a fantastic touch up on some severely out-grown roots, high lights and low lights. The blond matched my skin tone and previous hair color perfectly. Sonia was super sweet and adorable. I also recently went to her to get my bangs trimmed for a special occasion and I was out of there in 5 minutes with sleek, symmetrical, and seemingly new haircut!! I got compliments all night!\r

Great price with a great stylist! Go to Michael! Had my haircut and colored. He took his time to talk about what best suited me for my color and cut. He had a great attitiude and made my hair look so beautiful. I won't be seeing anyone else in the city. \r

I recently went to the Panyc hair salon to have my hair cut. The stylist that was recommended to me was a young man by the name of Michael. I was so excited to go to this salon because its been awhile since I've treated myself. My hair cut turned out really nice but I wish I could say the same for my stlist. This young made me feel like I was waisting his time. He acted like he had better things to do then cut my hair. Then to make matters worse I had to hunt him down, because I wanted to tip him personally. When I finally did find him I had the pleasure of hearing him trash talk one of his clients. I can safely say I will not be coming back to this salon. The hair cut was really nice but his attitude made me feel like I was a burden.

I've gotten cuts from Michael a couple times, and he's given me the best haircuts I've ever had. He listened closely to my requests but still managed to do a really artful job. He has terrific instincts, and is very engrossed in his work. I won't be going to anyone else in the city.

ohmy goodness- i went in a little while ago and wanted to blond from brown. I saw marylou and was really happy with the results. I guess this is my third time or so doing the whole overnight change thing so i wasnt suprised by how detailed the process is, so dont expect to go through a change like that in just an hour. and i must say when you change like that overnight it is very fun. i guess i like big changes!

I had an appointment with Simon at Panyc. It was the worse service and cut I've ever received. He did not allow enough time for the service I requested and proceeded to rush through my appointment. I will never go back to this salon. JC was also there the day I went and he seems to be a good stylist. His client looked awesome when he was done. Unfortunately I could not say the same about myself. I looked worse coming out than going in. All in all it was a waste of $76! IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT THIS SALON DO NOT MAKE IT WITH SIMON. YOU WILL DEFINITELY REGRET IT!!!!!

I haven't cut my hair in months and then I decided to cut about 8 inches off... I found panyc salon on citysearch and was recommended to go to Sonia. I was extremely nervous and wasn't even entirely sure what I wanted, but she worked with me to figure out a cut that looks fantastic. I have gotten nothing but raves from my friends, family and co-workers. The cut is cute, fun, sassy and so easy to manage! I love it and will definitely bring my business back here to Sonia. Thank you!!

I had my first cut at Panyc a couple of months ago - and while it was a pleasant experience I by no means left the salon ""loving"" my hair. Wayyyy over-due for a cut I made another appointment at Panyc and crossed my fingers that the second time would be the charm. My appointment was with Sonia and she worked MAGIC with my long hair! She listened to my requests/concerns and then gave me the beautiful, easy, gorgeous cut I had been hoping for. \r
\r
It's a shame the previous reviewer had such an unpleasant experience - but mine was just the opposite! It's the best cut I've had in 10yrs in NYC!

This woman butchered my hair. I asked for a simple trim and I ended up with some crazy rocker chick chop job. I went to another salon to get a consult about fixing it and the stylist said that this was the worst haircut she's seen in years. It's going to take over a year to get it back to the way it was before. I thought $65 was a good deal, but it ened up costing $200 all together after getting it fixed. Not to mention I've lost the majority of my hair. It's been over a week and I still want to cry every time I look at my hair. So, save your money and your tears and avoid Panyc and Sonia at all cost.

This woman butchered my hair. I asked for a simple trim and I ended up with some crazy rocker chick chop job. I went to another salon to get a consult about fixing it and the stylist said that this was the worst haircut she's seen in years. Pros: Nice salon space

Cons: Terrible Haircut, Sonia

After reading the online reviews and looking at the website- I really wanted to like this place. I have had several disasters in this city and was really trying to find a salon to stick with. I know the stylist and the salon may not always be indicative of each other (one bad stylist may not make for a bad salon) but I do feel that the owners should not tolerate sub par work, or work that does not reflect well on the salon as a whole. Apparently, there are some really wonderful stylists here, so I won't say don't try them. However, my experience was not so great. The stylist I had was on the lower end of the cost spectrum there, but he was the only one who could take me on short notice. From the time i started talking to him, i felt like I was imposing on his time and that he had somewhere else he would rather be. He was constantly acting distracted- and did not seem to listen to what i had to say except for the fact that I wanted to keep some length and wanted bangs, other than that i felt like i was pretty much invisible. He seemed really rushed (but didnt appear to have anyone after me) and continually called me ""hon"" or something like that. I felt like he did not try very hard at all- and I gladly would have paid for more and left a generous tip if he had. The cut i ended up with as well as the experience as a whole can be summarized by ""meh""- not terrible, definitely not awesome. He also wanted me to come back for him to do my color in which my response is now- ""no way in hades"" because of how distracted he was and how little respect I received from him. \r
But, as I said- this was just one stylist - perhaps the senior stylists have a greater sense of customer care and service.

Pros: convenient location, low key, super sweet receptionist, cute puppy to greet people

Cons: impersonal stylist and assistant (who washed my hair), apathetic at best, acted bored and condescending

I've been going to PANYC for about two years now and have a great experience every time. Mary Lou does THE BEST highlights and is completely honest about what color will and will not work for you. I have had people stop me in the street and say they have been trying forever to get their color the same as mine. Paul cuts my hair (but everyone there is good) and gives the best blowouts afterwards. He will never cut too much or not enough and is very receptive to your concerns and ideas. Everyone there is so nice, well trained, professional and FUN!

I have lived in NYC for 15 years and bounced around forever looking for the perfect salon- one with a talented, friendly, knowledgable and professional mix of stylists and colorists who treat you like they really care about cutting and coloring your hair the way you want it- a fun, laid-back atmosphere, a place where I could feel confident that should I want anything from a basic trim and color touch up to a trendy, dramatic ""new-do"" I would be be in good hands. This is THE ONE. My appointments always start on-time- in fact, the salon is managed quite well overall- always clean, well stocked with products for sale (although I never feel pressured to buy anything- but usually do anyway becuase they carry some of the industry's top product lines) veryorganized in general. It really is a treat and a pleasure to go there and I very much look forward to my appointments with Mary Lou (color) and Paul (stylist). Such a nice place to be, everyone is friendly, no attitude, no drama. I have recommed several freinds and co-workers (many are now regular clients!) My hair always looks and feels great!

My regular stylist is on vacation all summer so I had done some searching and took a chance and booked an appointment based on the positive reviews. I was really excited about the cut because it was a few days before my three week vacation and I was hoping for a great look. I rushed back from the Hamptons to make the appointment and avoid the full cancellation charge. I was pretty underwhelmed. Chris seemed bored, unfriendly, and had little to offer in the way of recommendations. In the end, I got an average cut I could've gotten at any discount chain chop shop, though for five times the cost at Panyc. Worst of all, he had actually thinned my hair out on top so much by cutting into it sideways (to add texture?) that I looked as if I was balding. When i was on vacation, I actually decided to get another cut and only 30euros later, i looked like I had hair again. Besides the cut, his way of maneuvering my head was bizarre--no verbal ques, just literally pushing and shoving my head down, up and from side to side--almost like he's mad at you or hates his work. I'm a pretty big/solid guy, so I have to wonder if he's given some poor woman whiplash...

So, im reading reviews and i have to admit, ive never been to panyc. but my friend has, and chris cut her hair, and she was very happy with the result, although it wasnt one of your makeover type hair cuts, rather a trim. all i have to say personally is that i agree with the edward scissor hands bit with chris. because hes just as hot as johnny depp.

I feel as though I have stumbled upon the best kept secret in NYC. Mary Lou is an amazing colorist, really listened to my wants and needs and talked me thru the options and process. So happy with the results. The salon is sweet and pleasant, everyone was warm and welcoming and I felt completely comfortable and relaxed (I am usually a Nervous Nancy in salons because of past bad experiences). I kinda want to keep the secret to myself, but it is one of those things where you want to pass along the good word and share the love.

Pros: EVERTHING MARY LOU PAUL JOHN TOMMY!!!

Cons: A LIL SCARY WAITING FOR THE ELEVATOR

Mary Lou, fantastic!!! to say the least\r
I have wavy hair that has been abused with not-so-great salons in terms of colors and at home with colors from cartons, so I had different shades horizontal straps, my brown roots, my orange ends. \r
After talking to Mary Lou I still didn't know what is the name of the color I want, but with swatches, photos and a few adjectives and lots of gesticulation (like boom, wow), she understood what I need.\r
2.5 hours but the color is AAAAHmazing. I've always had red henna color but now its mahogany burgundy mix and the color is consistent throughout. One session that's all it took.\r
Mary Lou was very amicable, professional, funny (maybe she is a Leo) \r
No pressure to buy anything, jus suggestions.\r
Will definitely touch up here from now on\r

I went to Panyc to get my hair cut and colored. I called in on Friday afternoon and got an appointment for Monday Evening! I went with a Junior Stylist named Whitney because their prices are the lowest, also prices go down for returnign customers! The enviroment was very relaxed, no awkward, pressed conversation - just freindly. Whitney gave me an amazing cut (before I had just long, full hair and now I have long, layered hair with bangs). Whitney also gave me an awesome strawberry blond color!!! The cut was 60 and the color (very full head of highlights) was 160, great prices for Manhattan!!! I was also never charged for additional color glazes or drying my hair like so many salons do! I left feeling happy and not stressed, so I am definitly going back!

Finding a good hair Salon for a decent price and without bitchy and arrongant stylist is pretty hard in New York. Well dont look for it anymore go to Panyc. \r
The Staff is friendly, the location is nice. I hated hair salon before discovering Panyc.\r
i went there without an idea of what i wanted to do. made an appointment with Paul, and decided to totally trust his instinct and let him do what he thought would be good, the results was great. My hair are curly and the hair cut for months after the cut still looked good curly and straight, and was so easy to style. \r
And girls let Paul use his razors to cut your hair, he loves to use them (from what I gathered) and your haircut will be fantastic!!!\r

I'm so glad i finally tried panyc b/c i loved it...or should i say SIMON. The man is a hair GENIUS, a hair whisperer that understood all the annoying nuances of my hair. I've got hard to cut asian hair that's thick in the back, thin in front, and was trying to grow out my bangs from my last bad cut. Both the haircut and experience (like the styling tips) were in a different league...better than all the japanese salons i've tried (including hoshi coupe, ueno) and other $100 cuts in other cities. I actually LOVE my hair now for the first time in a long time. He's also sweet and unpretentious unlike so many stylists these days. I'm so done looking for a hair stylist...at $65 for the first cut, then $55 thereafter...it's totally worth every penny to look and feel your best.

I have 2 friends that go to Panyc and they suggested I go there when I finally decide to say ""bye-bye!"" to box color!! So, that time came and I made an appointment with Michael. When I got there, he sat me down and we talked about what I wanted and what he could do for my hair considering the color defects that were left by the dreaded box color. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how much time he spent with me discussing my hair and color options. I never had another stylist or colorist take so much time listening and really working with me and caring about me and the result. My processing experience was great -- Michael made sure I was comfortable and he kept checking in on the color. I felt like I was the only one in the salon -- and I wasn't. He blew out my hair and was giving me styling tips, which I appreciated. I was really happy with the results -- the color looks incredible! I also love that what he did suited my budget -- he took into consideration the upkeep and how often I'd need to come back. That was a definite surprise. He was real, and really seemed invested in me, his new client. I'll be back for sure. THANK YOU MICHAEL. :)

I was in need of a cut and color place in NYC as a filler for when I can not make it to my fav stylist up in RI. This place was great- Michael did my hair- and i loved what he did with the cut and color. Its a really reasonable place price wise and the staff was incredibly nice. Dont let the decor fool you- as you walk in it looks like it is an abandon construction sight- the salon is nice (not amazing) but nice. For a cut and highlight you cant go wrong with PANCY.

I just left PANYC with mixed YET STRONG reviews. Simon cut my hair-and I swear this is the BEST cut ever!! What talent and genius!!When I made the appointment,I was told that I need to come in for a consult with the colorist in advance.I was very clear-my natural hair color with some natural looking, sun kissed, warm blonde highlights on top.He asked red?I said, NO RED.HATE RED.He said it was easy. Today when I got there, we spoke again. He seemed uncertain but told me that it would be great, and I tried Michael out.Well, I just left there with hair that is striped RED and yellow- not even a natural red (unless I'm a Gerber Daisy),but a lipstick red!The job is sloppy- my roots are bright red and the red dripped over onto the too white highlights. The highlights are uneven, more pronounced on the left side (although he asked about my part, and parted it correctly) there are nearly no highlights on the right side on the top layer where my hair parts. This is the worst color job I have ever seen!THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF EVERYTHING WE SPOKE ABOUT.TWICE. AFTER my cut, the colorist came by-he never even saw it after the wash.I explained my problem. He said it looked great. Then he told me to wash the hair I just payed $100 to cut and style. Then he told me I would need to wait a week until he comes back to fix it.Upon checkout.I had to tell the receptionist as I paid an almost $250 tab with tears streaming down my face.**I was scheduled for Friday and spent almost 5 hours with Marylou... who is SO SKILLED that she patiently studied my hair and returned with the 5 or 6 various mixtures to begin.Carefully foiling sections- even pieces-at a time, washing the sections in different parts, conditioning my hair in between so it did not dry out terribly, toning and carefully checking to see how it took. I left last night with NORMAL hair. Not quite mine yet.It is a too dark brown and the highlights are still a too cool tone. But I am too scared to do anything for a while. MIXED EXPERIENCE.

Pros: Simon's haircut... Marylou, Master Colorist and Color Corrector. I urge anyone who hates someone else's mistake to let Marylou fix you!

Cons: The defensive and unapologetic attitude of first colorist after two prelim consults and a color resulting in the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I said and we spoke about. Very upsetting.

I just moved to the city and was in NEED of a haircut, it had been about 7 months ( i was letting it grow out). I was overwhelmed trying to find a place to go, and while I am willing to pay some money to get my hair cut, I am not going to pay 150+ when i don't know how good they are. My friend suggested PANYC, and I totally owe her. The place is easy to get to- and ya, its in an old building, but this is NYC. They have the entire 5th floor and it is such a great space. Everyone was really friendly, and I had to wait a few minutes (I was early and he was running a few minutes behind) and the receptionist gave me magazines, offered me something to drink and was very nice. JC cut my hair, and he was fantastic. Basically, I told him I need help, and I had no idea what I wanted. He talked to me about my hair, if I air dried it, etc and then told me what he thought would look good. I just let him have at it, and it is the best haircut I have ever had! I can do it a bunch of ways and its really easy. JC was super nice and friendly and totally knows what he is doing. If you are willing to pay above $60 for a cut, but still aren't sold on the super expensive salons, then this is the best place to go!

I have lived in the NYC area for 9 years, gone to probably about 50 different stylists (Including salons like Bumble and Bumble and Elizabeth Arden {who made my look like Bon Jovi}), and FINALLY have found a stylist that is worth (and more) the price in Panyc and JC. The laid-back feel is not intimidating, they work with you, make sure the cut/color is right for you, and totally gives you a great look. I have gotten countless compliments from other stylists on my color and love my cut.\r

I have gotten countless compliments from other stylists on my color and love my cut.\r
\r
It's worth it

Pros: Location, price, experience, I was always taken ontime

.

I tried this place out in October because I needed a trim. Made the appointment at the front desk. Since it wasn't a major style I wanted I said that I would take the lowest level of the stylist. Having no idea of what the levels of the stylists meant (the place I used to go to in Boston was a regular salon and I'd been going there for years, so this level-thing must be a NY phenomenon), I figured it couldn't be that bad to get a simple thinning out and trim from a person with a few years of experience. It took about an hour for this guy to cut my hair and he didn't even thin it out as much as I wanted. I couldn't really tell the difference in the before-and-after. He just seemed to clip the dead-ends and focus a lot on the back of my head than anywhere else. My hair looked ok when I left and I was glad the split-ends were gone, but I paid way too much for the end result. The other thing that creeped me out was the stylists would pick up and pet this dog, Peanut, not wash their hands and then serve the customers. I am now in need of a real cut and short of going to Boston to get it done, it will be trying out a chain salon.

Pros: none really

Cons: price, sketchy location (building, not neighborhood), hygiene with the dog

I have been going to PANYC for the past 2 years, and have never had a haircut that I didn't love. Simon is wonderful and extremely attentive - listens to what I want and at the same time, adds his personal touch to help guide me in the right direction. I have received many compliments and already referred almost 5 friends! I couldn't believe the price for such a great haircut, service, and nice people. I'd highly recommend this place - don't think twice!

Having read wonderful reviews, I made the visit to Panyc last week. \r
\r
With only a cell phone picture of the haircut I previously adored and a few guidelines of what it was I was looking for, Simon really took center stage with orchestrating an amazing salon visit.\r
\r
Perhaps it was his amiable disposition or his genuinely enthusiatic view of me as his client. I was immediately put at ease when he had a sit down with me to talk about what I was looking for.\r
\r
Not only did Simon constantly confided in me through every step of the haircutting process, he made suggestions that I immediately took a liking to. Before I knew it, he had sculpted a haircut that not only enhanced my natural facial features, he transformed my often lifeless Asian hair into a full-bodied sensation. To top it all off, he guided me step-by-step on how to style my hair and also gave me different variations on styles. \r
\r
Simon gave me a styling experience that should be a standard for all hair salons.\r
\r
I love my NEW haircut. His rapport building opened me up to a new possibilities with my Asian hair.\r
\r
Not only will I go again, I will avidly get my boyfriend to cut his hair with Simon as well.\r
\r
Thanks Simon. You Rock!\r

Pros: Amiable staff

Cons: Don't take the stairs. Take the elevator.

I decided to try out PANYC based on the Citysearch reviews and my need to find a place more convenient to the PATH in this cold weather. I chose to go with Simon based on the reviews and the fact that I have Asian hair. I definitely liked the salon space (not cramped, lots of seating) although the building itself is kind of icky, but that's not their fault. Simon was running behind schedule but was immediately very attentive to me, which was very comforting. I really appreciated Simon taking the time to have a dialogue with me about my hair, what I was looking for. I usually am pretty strict the first time I try a new place, but Simon's contributions definitely made sense and I'm glad for that. He was very precise when he needed to be and always checked in with me to make sure I was happy with what I was seeing. My hair feels and looks wonderful, and I'll be more than happy to return again!

Pros: Spacious salon, attentive and friendly to clients, great hours and rates

Cons: Main building is a little weird

Went to see Simon about a month ago looking for ""a new haircut"" when I went in to talk to him, I was probably the WORST client ever! I didn't know if I wanted to grow it or cut it, dye it or streak it, curl it or straighten it. Simon spent 20 minutes talking to me and we finally came to the agreement that I had no clue what I wanted! He was so nice and told me what he thought would look nice on me. In the end, we decided that I needed to think about it a little bit more. \r
\r
I went back to see him on 11/29 and he even remembered me! He actually looked at my hair, brushed it, touched it etc before he sent me to the wash. Watching Simon cut my hair was like watching an artist at work. He's so great! Plus, he's funny, personable and just makes the whole experience great.\r
Here was my favorite part...He actually walked me through the styling step by step. No hairdresser in this city has ever done that for me! He showed me how much product, how to hold the blowdryer etc. I felt like I was on cloud 9 when I left the salon. \r
\r
When I showered and styled my own hair today it was easier than my hair has ever been! He really created a look for me that is not only beautiful and totally fits my character but it also works with what my hair naturally wants to do! I have always HATED my hair and for once I love it!\r
\r
Not to mention, the salon is beautiful, the staff is amazingly friendly and warm. The prices were very reasonable and I didn't get any of that snooty attitude so many ny salons have.\r
\r
Simon, you are amazing! I love you, and will never need to look for a new hairdresser! \r
\r
A+++++++\r
\r
UPDATE: went back today 3/22 (almost 3 months since my last appointment. Simon remembered me and how my hair reacts to products and blowdrying. He's amazing. I left with another PERFECT haircut at a price that you can't beat in NYC. In Simon, I've finally found the stylist of my dreams!

Pros: Friendly staff, great haircut, reasonable prices, not pushy

Cons: The building is a bit sketchy, but their space is gorgeous!

I have been going to Panyc for over two years and love my experience each and every time. My only complaint (had I written this a few months ago) would have been the cramped quarters - although homey - could get to be a bit too homey. I am happy to report that now I have no compliaints whatsoever with Panyc. Their new space on 17th is BREATHTAKING and very SPACIOUS. I am so happy for them!! I just got my color and cut done and have gotten more compliments (even by strangers) than ever before. JC always takes his time and the results prove it. Thank you so much!

Simon is soooo wonderful... I went in so unhappy about my hair...and walked out with the best cut I have ever had! I have never been this happy about a cut....ever. Simon is so easy going and friendly and really knows how to work with any kind of hair... If you have had any kind of problem with your hair, Simon knows how to fix it. I am a HUGE fan.... So Simon, don't go anywhere...you are my guy! Thanks!

My hairstylist at Panyc Salon, Simon, is one of the best hairstylists I've had in my life. If they charged $25 instead of $55 for the cut, then the Salon would get 5 stars, but I suppose only my previous stylist was able to hook me up with that rate. Anyways, they wash your hair, give a head massage, and Simon does the most fantastic trendy cuts. He talks to you about your particular hair type, what you should do to groom it, and he's really cool. Pretty cute too but he's taken. Definately go to this salon!

I'v been jumping from salon to salon for the past 2 years now and I think I've finally found a place I can come back to. After reviewing everyone's comments about Panyc I thought I'd give it a shot. I had made an appointment with Chris today and I think he did a pretty good job with my haircut. I have this thick asian straight hair, but not quite straight enough because it tends to get a tad wavy so its been pretty hard to find someone who can understand how my hair falls. I only asked that I wanted bangs long enough to tuck behind my ears and be able to ponytail my hair and the rest he can decide what to do. I guess he had a vision and he went with it and now I'm one very satisfied customer. Its a little on the pricey side for me but I only get a haircut 2 to 3 times a year so I didnt mind paying for a really good one. Not sure how the other stylists are, but I recommend Chris and hope this helps someone out!

Oh my gosh!, I am soooooo jealous that you have PANYC to go to for a fantastic hairstyle. I used to get my hair styled from JC when he was in a salon in Texas and it was a very sad day for me when he left for New York. When you read other reviews about people getting so many compliments on their hair after going to PANYC, believe me it is true! I always got compliments and people were always asking me who did my hair. I have been searching for 7 years to find someone that could do the fantastic job that JC did for me and haven't been able to find it. I have told my husband many times that ""all I want for Christmas"" is to go to New York and get my hair cut by JC .....haven't made it there yet....but hopefully someday I will! \r
Trust me, go there, and you will be happy you did! I knew the ""Texas Trio"" would do great in New York because they are ""Texas Friendly"" but definitely New York ""hip""! Natalie Saavedra
