Just a few nights ago I passed by on my way home to get some Pad Thai and the place is closed! I don't even know when they closed and it's in my neighborhood. So many places are either losing leases and/or not renewing them or leaving just because the rents are too high. It's a shame, the service and food was really good. I suppose I will try the Times Square Ruby Foo's when and if I am in that neighborhood. New York in general is not what it used to be and for a native New Yorker/Manhattanite like me, that is an even bigger shame. For all the "cleaning up" 'of neighborhoods and other "improvements", this city has sadly lost its unique and quirky nuances and flavors.

First time to NY,first time to thisa restaurant.I agree with another reviewer that if you know Chinese food, their food is not great.Dim Sum is not up to my standard, but for tourists who do not know Chinese food that much,it will be "ok". I went there around 5pm after I saw the afternoon show on X'mas eve. Not really hungry so I just order some appetizers as snacks. The waitress asked us if we wanted regular water or sparkle water. My 24 year old daughter said regular water;i my 10 year old said sparkle water because he was attracted by the word "sparkle". She looked at me, I said regular water. Instead of listening to the adults, the waitress decided to bring a BIG bottle of "sparkle" water. Ended up it was $7.50!! I orderd 2 appitizers and a bowl of noodle. She looked at me and said "that's all?" two times, like she was not happy with the amount amount of money I am going to spend. Half way eating the pork ribs I decided to order a cocktail to go with it. Another waitress took my order and when the first waitress came back with the drink, she asked me TWICE if that's my drink. After she left the drink on the table, she right away took away my dishes, the pork ribs I was going to eat! No wonder why she questioned me about if that's my drinks, because SHE decided that I must have finished my food, and should go! So I called the other waitress, she reported it to the manager, and the manager came apologize. He took the pork ribs off my bill and send another pork ribs to us.Good damage control! However, the management should make sure those all frontline staff also know what is "customer service".

Pros: decoration and interior design is good

Cons: overpriced sparkle water and not good server

I've been going to Ruby Foos for years and their appetizers can't be beat. Favorites include:

crispy shrimp spring rolls
dim sum sampler
crispy shrimp lettuce wraps
spare ribs

They also have a wonderful sake selection.

I came here on a business lunch and the food was absolutely spectacular. I order one of the special rolls, and ordered an additional one even though I was not as hungry before The service is slow, the bar is not great, the server was a bit rude toi say the least. Considering I was on "lunch" at 4P.M" when it was completely empty and she had 2 other tables besides myself I felt as if the girl didn't know what she was doing. I am more than fond of servers who can recommend dishes and specials rather than spat food on the table for me. Hi, thanks.

Pros: Good sushi

Cons: Service

.

I saw this place on the news this morning and decided to try it . WOW the food was outstanding and the service was excelent ( Brigett). This is a good place for a first date. Very affodable and family friendly. The drinks are a little pricy but very good. I live in New Jersey and would come across the bridge to eat here again. Tell a friend!!!

Pros: Food , Ambience and price

.

From everything I have heard, I thought this was going to be a dining experience of a life time. First, we had to wait for a table which is unusual in NYC. Second it was really expensive. The food was ok, but not as good as it should have been for the price.

If you like overdone Asian decor, you are going to love Ruby Foo's, a large food palace with 400 seats and a menu to match. It is quite expensive but well worth it and the martini's are great! Service was good as well.

You have to try this plae if you are in NYC. It is an asian restaurant and everything I have ever tasted has been excellent! The best part of my meal is always the Benti Box for dessert - it looks like a tray of sushi, but it is sweet and delicious!

Food is good, fun atmosphere. A bit pricy. Best enjoyed off hours, when they aren't too busy: late afternoon , not a weekend evening.

I came here for a business lunch one afternoon, and I did not expect to like it. I was totally wrong because I loved it. It is in a wonderful spot in the city located right off of Times Square. The interior is decorated, and it is so interesting, and modern.
It is family style serving so all the orders come in large portions. It was a little expensive but so delicious. We ordered a little bit of everything, and it was all so delicious. The servers were so friendly and really helped us with any questions. She was quick with the food and drink. I absolutely loved this place and can not wait to go back.

I have to admit, so many people told us to go to Ruby Foos...so for a special night with our children, going to Kid's Night on Broadway, we took them to Ruby Foos on Broadway Theater District. We had an early reservation (5:30). The service and host was very good since we called a few times to tell them that we were running late because of bad weather getting into the city and they were very accomodating. I would say that was the only good thing about it. We ordered the crispy chicken lettuce wraps and pork dumplings for appetizer. The pork dumplings were the best thing we ate. The Chicken lettuce wraps had very little chicken to put in the lettuce. We ordered the Pad Thai Chicken and Shrimp, the Ruby Stir Fried Chicken and a house sushi roll (I forgot which one). The chicken and shrimp in the Pad Thai were dry and over cooked as was the chicken in the Stir Fried Chicken (which tasted burnt as well). The sushi roll was not fresh, very dry. I cant imagine that it was just the items we ordered. I would have had a much better chinese meal going to a different restaurant, paying half the price and getting a much better tasting meal.

Went to Ruby Foo's uptown location, it was an early dinner pre show. 6:00 reservation. the place was not crowded at that time. We were offered a table in the window, but i asked if we could sit in the main dining room, which is very dramatic with its sweeping stairway and eclectic Asian decor. The drink called Ruby Foo, was potent and delish. It was brought to the table in the shaker and poured into the frosted martini glass by the server. There was enough for two full drinks in that shaker!! When my glass was almost empty the waitress came over and poured the rest into my glass. That's Great Service. Great food recommendations by the waitress too.We had some Cali rolls, tempura rolls, pork dumplings for app's...all very good and fresh. The main course of the Filet mignong with chinese broccoli was amazing, very tender and flavorful. We told the waitress when we got there that we were going to a show and she made sure the service was prompt and everything was hot and served just right!!! We left around 7:15 and it was getting busy, you can see they were setting up for some big parties....also they have a fun kids menu and were very attentive to the children seated near us.

Fooooey - anyone that knows anything about asian food would agree that this place totally sucked. i've been there with my husband, looking forward to a nice romantic dinner. the place caught our attention by its nice ambience, but that really all it has. as you feel like sitting in a fridge this restaurant is a big rip off and i wouldn't recommend at all to go there. its not more than an overpriced mcdonald-standart place!!!

Ruby Foo's Uptown is Incredible! I attended a private event there and it was phenominal. The staff was extremely professional and the food was excellent. They did a cocktail hour downstairs and then a sit down dinner on the top floor - Don't listen to the other reviews! These people are idoits. It's not supposed to be "authentic" Chinese food anyway- This is pan Asian-fusion - get with it people - The place is not a tourist trap at all it is stunning and beautiful!!!!! - the problem is that these so called "real" new yorkers who write negative reviews are always on the look out for the little known out of the way dingy dungeon places that are up and coming and no one knows about- Ruby foo's is well known, dramatic, in your face and bold and it's all on purpose - they want you to feel like youre in a fantasy world. I LOVE this place and have lived in Manhattan on the upper west side for 25 years so believe me, I know good food people! Oh also, try the ruby foo - their cocktail -they are incredible!

Cons: exterior facade doesnt look like anything special - once you walk through the doors you will be in awe - it's stunning!

.

This is the quintissential tourist trap with all the facades that go along with it. The whole theme thing and the faux-chinese decor , nevertheless both locations are touristy (Upper West Side and Times Square).
I am a native NYer and believe me I know good Chinese food and this is not at all what you want.
The food is substandard and the prices are totally unwarranted for the bad quality that you are getting here !
What happened to the good old days of " Four Seas" " Auntie Yuans "and "David K's"? Those days are long gone , so go venture out to the boroughs and try to find authentic Chinese fare elsewhere. I would stay away from all those "Be our Guest " restaurants. Its basically a chain for tourists and "so-called wanna be NYers" who really dont know any better ! And by the way the restaurants are not any cleaner on the UWS than in Chinatown ! The rodent population is all over the city...east, west ,uptown ,and downtown. Its pretty scary. Dont listen to Howard Stern . He gets free meals at every restaurant he promotes. he doesnt know good food anyway. This is definitely not a good Chinese restaurant.
High prices, for low quality. Thats not what a smart consumer wants. Stay Away from Ruby Foos

This place is huge. They have an attractive design and nice location. But the food is of a very average quality. Even when it looks so attractive in the menu it appears to just ok on the table.

Our first trip to "Foos" was the Times Square location in June 2005. Since that date, we've visited the Upper West Side location 3 times and after tonight's visit, my wife noted that this is one of her favorite places to eat, not only in NYC, but anywhere! I agree. We typically spend $100 per visit and this includes a couple of drinks each, appetizer, two main entrees (I recommend the #51 and the #62) and a side dish (always the pineapple chicken fried rice). We are stuffed when we're done. Very fresh ingredients, very good flavors, very good service (the last 2 waiters were very easy to talk with and knowledgable of the menus and ingredients) and a very fun atmosphere.

This has got to be one of the best places I've ever eaten at. My fabulous friend surprised me by throwing me a birthday party here with all my co-workers. The place speaks for itself. Its got ambiance and the waiters are very friendly. The food is excellent. You have a choice between dim sum, chinese and japanese. The peking duck is delicious. The drinks are good too. I definitely recommend this place for groups. I had such a great time here tonight. If you live in New York and you love the bright lights at 42nd St. come to this place and try it out! It's sheek, savvy and very nice.

Ok, just looking up reviews for my favorite spots and noticed that MANY people who have posted reviews here are reviewing the wrong Ruby Foo's location.

I've been to both, live, work and play in Manhattan.

HANDS DOWN, the uptown location is the place to go. It's in my neighborhood, I go at least once every other week and no folks, no tourists at this location.

Service is always fantastic, crowd is full of locals (except for my guests who are in from Europe quite often, I bring them here) and the food is great. Not my favorite Steve Hanson (ahhh....Vento and Ocean Grill) but definitely fun and local.

So, if you want touristy, stick to the one in Times Square, if you want the real deal, this is the spot!!

I've been here three times (with different girls, hehe) and they are always impressed by the ambience, food, and drinks.

Every time I've come here, I've had something different and it was always good. For example: dumplings (any kind) -- good dipping sauces. Or Rice with whatever was good too. Seriously, the food is delicious.. but what I really enjoy is their PLUM SAKI and I believe they only have one brand so its not confusing.

SUGGESTION: The prices are a little steep BUT BUT BUT the main course portions are BIG so a normal-sized couple can easily share an entree. You might want to get more than one appetizer if that's your thing.. they are good and regular appetizer portions. Definitely ask for the plum saki. The chicks love that stuff and it makes you seem cool and worldly.

Very friendly waitstaff.. very attentive. I really don't have anything negative to say about this place. Maybe I got lucky, but I never had to wait more than 15 minutes past my reservation time which is normal for a NY place.

Yes -- definitely a lot of silly tourists taking pictures but it is kind of a cool looking place. I bring cute girls here to impress them.. especially when they're not from NY,lol.

For a steven hanson restaurant this place in one word sucked!! our reservation was for 7:30, we arrived early and were told we had to wait. We sat at the bar and had suprisingly good drinks, the bartenders were very friendly and helpful in choosing one of their foo-foo cocktails. We were finally seated at 8:15, and our server was horrid, she knew nothing of the specials and told us all the wrong ingredients in the dishes we ordered. If we ever go back again, we'll just sit at the bar!

You are in Times Square; by far the best restaurant in the area.

Long waits --- I've eaten there over a dozen times; had to wait at least half the time; but for less time than it takes to have one drink.

The food -- unique and inspired.

The service -- exceptionally quick/attentive; tell them to slow down the service if it is 'too good.'

Groups -- excellent job for groups up to 8.

If your nose gets bent out of shape for any little thing, the management will make it right. And if it does get bent out of shape, you should have gotten in a cab or a train and chosen a restaurant outside of Times Square.

I have a lot of business assocaites and customers who stay in Times Square hotels. I *always* recommend Ruby Foo's to them, and no one says anything but THUMBS UP.

I have always been a fan of this restaurant. Have referred a number of people. I took an out-of-town client their last Monday and was totally humiliated. The food--all of it was of very poor quality. I wonder if something has changed! The pad thai was soggy, cold, and tasteless. I asked for it spicy and it arrived with absolutely no sense of heat. I asked for chicken with it and it had 2 small pieces of chicken in the dish. I must say, it will be a long time if at all, before I would choose to go back.

this was a great fusion restaurant. the tempura & wasabi was the best i had ever eaten and the sushi was really fresh. most of the entree's were very inovative including the wasabi mashed potatoes. the fillet minion was a little too salty and the chicken was average but the side dishes with each meat was amazing. the rices were great and anything with peanuts tasted good. our waiter was extremely friendly but not available to us frequently enough to make more orders for sushi. it's just too bad that after such a great meal, deserts were below average. but all in all, a good restaruant.

Great place to go for fresh sushi and a "fun" environment. Restaurant is very clean and professional and decor is fun to look at- not something often found in a Chinese or Pan-Asian restaurant. Bar area seemed hopping for the UWS. Overall, not a bad gig and a place I could frequent often.

Pros: Brown Rice for sushi, Clean, Fresh Sushi

Cons: a little noisy, a little pricy

All the food is pre prepared including the sushi. This place is like a production line for those who appreciate factory farms and people that come from that type of environment. It felt like Mcdonalds, Wendy's, and Burger King collaborated in a venture to open a "new age" restaruant for a very dumb audience that appreciates the worst food masked by soy sauce.

Some Chinese food connoisseurs may judge this place automatically since Ruby Foo's is run by non-Chinese, have a non-comparable menu to most authentic dishes, and be a large touristy spot for people too scared to head out to Chinatown.

However, Ruby Foo's wasn't meant to be either of the things. Turns out they create a variety of Asian fusion, which spans from drinks to desserts that are excellent. The prices are not as friendly but they possibly justify for food you don't find often anywhere else ... not even your most authentic Chinese restaurant. The wait is long, especially on weekends and nights, and the service is okay but not the greatest. One great thing is the interior -- which a decor that is unmatched and beautiful to look at. Its worth the experience to try at least once.

I have been in New York for 3 days and I have eaten here every day. My servers Aaron and James have been extremely accomodating.
I really enjoyed the appetizers and can say that I have tried everything on the menu in the appetizer section. The duck spring rolls were excellent. The calamari was so so. I am a big dim sum fan so the dim sum on the menu is not what I am used to but for mass market its good. The tamarind glazed ribs were excellent as were the jumbo shrimp with chow fun noodles (which we substituted for rice), the tuna was scrumptious according to my dining companion. I have been luck to arrive at 5pm for dinner and 1130 and 1pm for lunch and it was not crowded. The only con was having to go downstairs to use the rest room

I walked into a party at Ruby Foos, fully prepared to hate it. I've taken some cooking classes, eaten at 3 stars in Paris, and in general dislike "theme" type restaurants.

However, I had a very good time at Ruby Foos. The service was attentive, and the food was quite good. While I would hesitate to call it "Pan Asian" (which I reserve for restaurants like Nobu), their sushi wase fresh, and their cooked dishes were prepared with care. The desserts were particulary good, and they obviously put a good deal of time into their preparation - I specifically remember a wonderfully fudgy chocolate cake. And, according to my wife - who knows such things - they can really mix a drink.

Ruby Foos, while I wouldn't choose it for an evening of haute cuisine, was a fun place with decent food and I would definitely go again.

Reservations don't matter. You'll wait for your table, which will so close to the next table, you'll feel like you're double-dating. The place will be filled with people taking pictures of each other (do they have any idea how obnoxious is?). The food is okay, and the servers try hard, but fail to be competent (they gave us the same appetizer three times). There is no way in God's green Earth that I would go there again.

I love going to Ruby Foos. The food is great - try the Chilean Sea Bass or 7 Flavor Beef. The ambiance is fun with exciting decor. It's great for groups and has a wide menu and drinks selection. I've eaten there repeatedly and never had a bad experience!

Love the B.R. Guest chain, but the food at Ruby's was awful. The "fillet mignon" entree was charred and all fat, could not even eat most of it. Appetizer arrived cold, draught beer was more than half foam. Staff very/overly friendly, waitress was unengaging. Bill was sizable considering what was ordered. Good atmosphere, but will probably not return.

I have been several times. Can be a date, group or family place (kid-friendly). Service can be really great or average. Atmosphere on most nights is bustling. Usually seated within 15 minutes of reservation time. Have had repeat issues with entrees being brought out before sushi or appetizers. But portions are good for sharing and larger tables have lazy susans in the middle to help with that. I recommend any of the meat and Pad Thai dishes. Try Sakitini and Ruby Foo drinks. Some signature sushi rolls using mango and tempura flakes...if my memory serves me, Sushi rolls #136 and 168 (or 158?) are the best!

We had a great time here with our 2 teenage daughters. The menu is so appealing that we wanted to try everything, and we ended up with twice as much food as we needed, but it was all delicious. Our favorites were the calamari, salad with goat cheese tempura, lemon pepper filet mignon, ginger mashed potatoes, coconut sticky rice, hot and sour shrimp, and the peach crisp. The scallion pancakes were fine, but not as interesting as the other dishes, and the peking duck maki (yes, we probably should have known better...) was odd due to the incongruous taste of the seaweed.

I had heard about Ruby Foo's but thought it was a real tourist trap. Wrong. We went to the uptown one and were very pleased with the atmosphere, the service, and especially the food. The short ribs were amazing and the sushi was very fresh. The music, however, was very loud and techno.

They have so many different kinds of Asian foods, that there is always something for everyone. We live in the neighborhood, take all of our out of town guests and think the food is yummy! The service is slow at time, but enjoy a Green Apple Martini or a speciality drink and people watch!

Went on a Saturday night. It was busy, but the whole experience was great. The service was wonderful as well. The waitress was very attentive.
I loved the lighting, atmosphere and food. If you're a fan of sushi, and pan asian food, with a little different style, this is the place to go. Try the ruby foo.

A good place to have a drink (the eponymous Cosmopolitan variant is delicious) and an appetizer or two (high marks for the Chilean sea bass satay).

Cool atmosphere in both the restaurant and lounge. Service was competent but not overwhelming.

Ruby Foos was just a block from the hotel that my family and I stayed at on our recent visit to NYC. So we walked over and we were seated immediately (which was great!), but our waiter was had a horrible attitude, couldn't remember to bring lemon for our water, or soy sauce for our sushi rolls, the food was wonderful, but unfortunately the service ruined our visit.

After hearing about this place for a while I decided I had to try it out for myself. The food was delicious. All of us (3 people) loved everything we ordered, however we didn't like how long our meals took to get to our table. The people I was with said they would not go back because of the poor service. However since this place has such a good reputation, I figured the bad service that night was an anomoly, so I went back. I shouldn't have, the service was poor again. Bottom line, the food is great, the service is not, if you have an evening to kill and are hungry then this is your place.
