I always enjoy going to Chance. The food is pretty good and the potions are generous as well. The wait staff is always friendly and pretty attentive to the patrons. I personally recommend the Chance Chicken and Two Flavor Shrimp. The drinks aren't bad either. The Chance Mojito rocks, as do the Pomegranate Mojito & Margarita. Neat little summer spot to sit outside and have a few drinks with a good meal.

Fastest service I've ever seen. Super friendly on top of that which only added to my experience. The other reviewer is right in that the place sticks out like a sore thumb. Don't let that be a reason to pass this amazing place by!

I celebrated my 21st birthday at Chance this past weekend. Me and my party all had an excellent time and loved the food, one of my friends did complain that the sauce for the crispy noodles was a little bit spicy... but she's super picky and I found the sauce perfect (with a little bit of an after kick of spice). They seated us on time, didn't mind that about half my party didn't show up or that we all requested separate checks. Our server was excellent and friendly and always available when i turned around looking for something. My mother had pre-arranged for them to serve us desert and they put together a beautiful presentation of their chocolate souffle, and wrote "Happy Birthday" across the plate for me. It was super nice that everyone in the restaurant also joined in singing :-)
I had the Green River appetizer which was delish, the avocado was a tad over ripe making it slightly difficult to pick up with chopsticks.
The Chance Mojito a combo of classic mojito with pineapple and lychee... amazing! (the mojitos seemed to be a hit, i can't remember turning around at any point to see the bartender doing anything besides bounding mint leaves.
The Hot and Sour Chicken Soup is the BEST i've ever had! perfect, good quality vegetables, high levels of spice and white meat chicken mmmm
As an Entree I had the sweet sesame beef, which was again delicious, the sauce had a bit of a tang to it almost vinegary but good....my only complaint was that the veggies we're hidden under the beef and i didn't even see them until I was full :-(
We had the Chocolate Souffle as well as their green tea mille crepes... both we're to die for!

My husband searched for dim sum or just dumplings in brooklyn on his i-phone and found Chance. It was a Saturday afternoon and we did not feel like going into manhattan so we gave Chance a chance. Our party of 3 was seating quickly, but the place was empty so that's no biggie. The waiter was pleasant and polite and answered all of our questions. The dumplings were hot and delicious, especially the shrimp and crabmeat dumpling that contained a warm broth and had to be eaten with a spoon. My husband enjoyed the hot and sour soup so much that he ordered a second cup. Lastly, I left my reading glasses on the table. Another waiter ran after me on Smith to return them to me.

I'm thinking of going back for my birthday in a few weeks with friends. However, after reading some of the reviews, I will give it another try one evening to make sure what we experience was not a fluke. All in all, we left this meal extremely happy!

i stopped in with a couple friends for drinks & apps at the bar, it was horrendous. The place was empty, the bartender kept looking at us & nodding, so we thought he was coming over...10 minutes, still no menu, no water...got up asked for menus...nod...5 minutes later, menus. our other friends showed up, we waved, because clearly patience was not the key to service in this place...tried to order drinks, bartender at this point, was in 'deep' conversation with a server. I've been working in rest. for a long time, & eating out for longer, i have a high tolerance for bad service, but never in my life have i experienced something like this. We ended up leaving after 20 + minutes w/out having had or odered 1 drink in an empty bar.

Worst part is we decided to give it another 'chance' & the food wasn't all that bad for the 'hood...to bad i'll never step foot in there again!

First of all, Chance stands for China and France. When I found that out I had to go here! This place just stands out as a sore thumb which is why I often passed by it, but then after I found that fact out I went in. The food was simply delicious. My meal encompassed the Chinese style of food with the spices however, it was also healthy tasting which made it even better. The ambiance was great and so was the service. I highly recommend this place. It has a trendy, hip, sleek look about it.

The food was disgusting. I ordered the crab appetizer because it had been recommended in a magazine review. It tasted like old, dirty sea water on a stale cracker... Then, after the waiter's rec, I ordered a sea scallop dish. It, too, was inedible. I expected just a handful of scallops, but it arrived packed with two dozen small and gooey bites. Normally, I can eat pretty much anything, but this was pathetic especially given the price.

My girlfriends and I LOVE Smith Street and have been hanging out at the bars and restaurants there for years now. It was only this summer that we stumbled upon Chance...and we can't get enough of it! During the week, we come by after work for their happy hour special at the bar. $5 mojitos!!! I usually spend 9 or MORE at other places and they don't even make them right...these mojitos are the best I've had AND cheap! Their non-happy-hour-drinks are a few dollars more but well worth it. I love their lychee martini and pomegranate mojitos - yummy. And if you like asian cuisine, this place has everything. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and more. Weekends they get pretty busy, so it's good to make reservations when coming in groups. They have outdoor seating which is really nice when the weather permits (and if it's not already full!), but the inside is just as nice though...cute decor, great music, candles, etc. The service here is ALWAYS good, they are friendly and accommodating. I've never had a problem. My only wish is that we would have discovered this place sooner!!!

This is one of my go-to spots in the neighborhood for just plain good food. The service is friendly and there are enough low price options that it doesn't have to be a lot to get a good meal.

Went here for my 1st anniversary. Food was pretty good, service was alright. It was pretty romantic, tables were kind of close together though. I had fish & the chocolate souffle which was awesome. It was good for the price. Hard to find though, the address wasn't in order when we went down the street, it's actually a block up from the street numbers... and kind of hidden. BUT worth it.

I really like going to Chance and it always makes a great impression on my friends or co-workers. I love to order the crusted salmon which is a treat, and the Chicken Satay. The drinks are mixed well and the service is terrific. I enjoy dining with friends but must say it's hard to resist a warm smile and hello I always get when sitting at the bar. I find the food and staff much to my personal liking and would recommend using this place for any social occassion.

Ignore the bad reviews...they must have been from days of different staff. I have been going to Chance for over 5 months and it is one of the best restaurants on Smith St. The Chilean Sea Bass with spicy miso sauce is fresh, delicious and the best on the menu. Their dim-sum selection is large and of course, tasty. Veggie fried rice is full of fresh veggies, not the "squared veggie nuggets" found in other places and it is CHEAP, filling and the best I have eaten anywhere. Every dish is cooked to order and worth the quick wait. The staff is friendly and helpful, and will take care of you. Dining alone? Pull up to the bar to get a drink and dinner from the best bartender on Smith. Frank knows how to pour a "mean" martini, "mash" a fresh mojito or "mix and shake" anything else you can think of. He is also great with menu suggestions, likes to hold a conversation and will take care of your needs. There is also "Happy Hour" at the bar on Sunday - Thursday - great way to try new wines or drinks. If you are looking for "bistro" Asian food - CHANCE is worth your time.

Cons: Can be loud if really busy

Love their coconut cosmos -- I also thought the appetizers (we didn't eat a whole meal) were pretty good too. The staff was really nice and friendly, and were totally on top of the ball. I'm definitely going back...

Please, please, please go ANYWHERE else on Smith Street. I didn't believe the bad reviews posted here, and I paid the price. I made reservations for 6 people for 9pm on a Saturday night on a friend's suggestion. I was threatened on the phone that if we weren't all there by 9:15, they would give our table away, so we made sure the entire party was there by 9:05 (and most of us were there long before.) We were told it wait would be "a couple of minutes." And then we were told it again. And again. And again. And again. Waiting at the bar it took me - no lie - TWENTY minutes to get a glass of friggin' wine because the bartender couldn't be bothered. The short, blond, stoic hostess also couldn't be bothered to make eye contact, let alone apologize for the wait. And honestly, if I'm waiting that long, you better make sure there is a drink in my hand. Finally, FORTY-FIVE MINUTES LATER, we were seated. Why the hell did we make reservations??? "Thanks for your patience" everyone kept saying once we were seated. At this point I was so mad all I could mutter was "Too bad I'm not patient." The food was good, if you don't count the 3 Chilean Sea Bass bones in one dumpling. Not pleasant. They were out of some of the Pris Fixe options, and forgot to bring out desserts that were ordered. On top of that, the ONE bathroom they have is disgusting (and my friend had to wait - again, no lie - 15 minutes to use it) and one of the servers kicked me in the shin while I was waiting for the table and even didn't apologize. And the salt in the wound? They didn't comp us a damned thing. Skip it. I would have rather stayed home, saved the money, and most importantly, saved myself the sheer aggravation and anger I experienced. This place is a joke. Like the title says, I'm usually a 20%+ tipper as a former waitress, and this was the first time I left absolutely no tip whatsoever.

I've eaten at many restaurants in brooklyn - most of them relatively inexpensive (unlike this one) - and I could never say that I had a BAD meal....until now. On a Monday night at dinner time there was only one other table full besides ours, and the waitstaff was rather annoying mostly because they were bored. I ordered some dim sum and when the plate came out, it was not what I ordered, but the waiter tried to pass it off as the same dim sum, hoping that I wouldn't notice. Turns out they had none of those dim sum that was on the menu, nor did they have ingredients for another salad I ordered instead. I ended up paying $33.50 for a plate of lettuce with some yellowish sweet and very sour dressing ,with some flavorless chicken.

I'm usually quite suspicious of fusion places- the seemingly interesting explosion of flavors leads to confusion afterwards, I can never remember what I ate and if that was good (Chubo for instance). But Chance is a more comfort-food approach to fusion. The flavors are nicely balanced but strong enough to be discerned in each dish. While the menu reads almost completely "Chinese", the spices and mild flavors are French. There are also Thai and Indian influences (the delicoius seafood pancakes with curry). Dim Sum (which were served piping hot) standouts are scallop with mushroom, sea bass with carrot, lobster with spinach and goat cheese. Even the green tea and deserts (spring roll banana, creme brule) are great. And if not for dinner, drinks here are pretty good either.

My friends and I were on vacation in NY and was referred to Chance by a friend. I found the food to be outstanding, particulary the salmon dish I had. I also ordered the Change Mojito, which was out of this world. My friends settled for rice dishes, but we came back the following day to try the dim sum, which was good...not outstanding, but good. We ate out in the back patio, which is worth it as it's cool and the music is hear well there. Overall, excellent restaurant!

This lovely French-Asian fusion restaurant stands out amongst other great restaurants on Smith Street. We walked in on a Wednesday night and were seated promptly. The service was attentive without being overbearing and each dish we tried was wonderful from the spring rolls to the cod with pineapple tempura. And they provided a delicious dessert on the house! Definitely not a restaurant to skip!

Chance is a small cozy restaurant, with a romantic feel to it, the decor is great. Yes you have to wait to be seated and because its small there is no waiting area and the seat at the bar was all taken. But when you are seated the waitresses are great, they explain everything on the menu, and the price of the food is really cheap for the service you get. I had the mango chicken and i can't go on to tell you how delicious that was and the presentation was beatiful. Please if your thinking about it go, and stay the wait you won't be disappointed.

I have visited Chance since it opened, last time at the end of February, and got the best service in the bar area, period. Of couse because I like the food and love the drinks I have always come back. And when my friends and I had RAW pork in a dumpling the helpful and friendly bartender tried her best to accomodate us (it was disgusting chewing on RAW pork!) while not making an idiot of the owner (No, he didn't even take it off the bill, so the bartender ended up paying for it to make us come back!) . I will never eat there again! Yuuk!

What's up with the guy at the door saying the wait is 10 minutes when in reality it is an hour? And the waitresses yelling at each other and looking angry? Drinks were mediocre and a friend of ours living in the area said they used to be great. Hmm...
My wife liked the shrimp, but I got some undercooked pork and after complaining it still wasn't taken off the menu. Cool looking place, but the managment seems to have hubris or something.

Pros: some of the food

Cons: host, attitude, raw pork!

Toni & I have been to Chance about 6 times since it opened. Each time the drink menu has had numerous interesting mixes. Last night we tried the chardonnay and the Pom Margarita. Both were perfect Friday evening relaxers. We had the brook trout, stuffed shrimp and spicy tuna appetizer. The chocolate souffle was as always - perfect.

My husband and I have tried just about every restaurant on Smith St. This is the one we continually go back to. The food is clean and fresh tasting and, unlike some Asian food, you can distinguish the different flavors and ingredients used in each dish. Lunch is an incredible value. Make sure you try their banana eggrolls with homemade ice cream for dessert!!

15 bucks an entree and I have to wait 45 min, when the place is empty and there's no explanation why is taking so late for the food to arrive? Is the food that great that I'm willing to take that kind of abuse and pay for it? NO!!!

There's like 30/40 other restaurants on Smith St, if they don't value the costumer, good luck to them.

Lovely place with the kind of Chinese food I like -- clean presentation, sizeable menu, and a bit of a French twist. Some of the best sesame prawns I've ever had. The bartrenress and waitresses are all friendly, caring. and totally on the ball.

One of the best restaurants in the entire NYC area. The food is delicious. The prices are outrageously cheap. Parking is never a problem no matter how busy Smith is. The ambience is perfect for any occasion - intimate dates, brunch with friends, and even family gatherings. The dessert is fantastic and the two-sauce shrimp alone is worth coming for. Such a gem!

We went on a wed. night, so it was not crowded at all and we got a seat right away. I found the menu to be more asian than french, but that's ok. The staff was friendly, the prices were good and so was the food. The place is pretty cozy so it might not be good for a large group, but the bar was good. The kiwi mojito was great!

We had Mojitos at the bar bf dinner this Saturday and they were wonderful! Busy place, but with a familiar attitude. Very friendly welcome, nice bartender and waitress. Food was delightful, if somewhat strange. In a good way strange! We'll be back as soon as we're in Brooklyn next time!

The food was delicious, and the service courteous and prompt. For the most part, the menu is Chinese ingredients with French preparation, and it works. The appetizer specials when I was there were excellent. The wine list is decent, and the cocktail menu is terrific.

ok, so the food is good, but we loved the super friednly, yet not overbearing service! One waitress spoke weird English, but it was cute anyways. The cute bartender served us in the bar and was SO friednly and entertaining. Awesome dim sum, good entees. Nice vibe, we'll be back, !!

Fantastic place!!! Everything from their decor to their excellent food dishes to their service was phenomenal. Eat here for asian with a delightful twist. The atmosphere is romantic and loungy, but you can dress casual to eat here. Try the $17 prix option--it's a fantasic sampleing of their dishes.

The atmosphere at Chance is pleasant and the service was excellent. We both had a $17 Prix Fixe which was a real bargain for the quality. Try the fried squid if they have it.

Chance is a wonderful place. The drink menu is interesting and creative, filled with items like kiwi mojitos and raspberry L.I. iced teas. The food is always excellent in both preparation and presentation. Their miso and hot and sour soups are both the best Ive had. While Chance is great for multi course meals with drinks and deserts you can also walk out of there full and happy with a $15 check.

I went there with a friend, and were the only people in the place, but for some reason the waitress ignored us and we ended up being served half the time by the bartender who was excellent(and cute!) We tried the prix fixe menu, they have 2 choices 17&26, both started out great but my ribeye was awful I had to send it back, it was inedible, they were nice about switching it for the shrimp, which was good, desert(souffle) was absolutely amazing! Kiwi Mohitos fantastic too! The dim sum menu has some great stuff , the pot stickers were awesome at $2 for 3 a great deal! The Ocean box dim sum was also really good! If they had better servers the place would be nearly perfect. The prices are very reasonable and the decor is fun. I will definetly go back, but I will sit at the bar!

we could just eat at home some bananas and drink water....
we could go to china town and had much better chinese food and pay less $$
or we could go to the next door asian resto, which is much better, and has an atractive menu.
we had the seviche... (chinese seviche???) .and foie-gras (same?!?)
then we had the shrimps -was very good, and the miso-cod - was o.k
the dessert - forget about it...
service was less than the service you get at K-mart...
drinks where nice and creative !

the chef at chance is very creative in his combination of french and asian food. he is very creative, the foie gras is excellent, black cod and miso, fried oysters amonst other things. they think "out of the box". service is sometimes a little slow but the food compensates. have had dinner for 2 there plus a party of 10, so very surprised by the other reviews. ask to speak to the head chef directly, he always welcome feedback.

Out of the myriad of restaurant choices on Smith street, I made the mistake of eating lunch at Chance. While the decor is interesting, the service and food are not worth even a single visit. With only 2 tables occupied in the whole place, the waitress spent her time behind the bar and only came to help us when we got up and asked her to. The spring rolls were some of the worst I've ever had, really oily with no flavor, and the dim sum dumplings were not much better. The box lunches have decent portions but lack in flavor. Not a good choice!

When you think of 'Asian Fusion' Restaurants the Name Chance should pop right into your head. If you haven't visited 223 Smith street in the heart of the trendiest growing brooklyn neighborhood then its time to now. While dining there with friends I found the atmosphere inticing and the food equisite. We enjoyed a courtious wait staff with timely service; need I say more. The menu speaks for itself as we enjoyed the 3 course Prix Fix menu with a price that cannot be beaten! The new Dim Sum menu with a Foie Gras Dumpling and a lobster and spinach dumpling beats all I have tried in China Town. Visit Chance for an evening of food, fun and friends!

Chance is a wannabe 80s "chic" restaurant. The decor is tacky, the waitstaff is overly-solicitous and the food is horrible. The lobster paired with polenta would seemingly be an interesting combination, but they somehow managed to overcook both to the point of being inedible. If you are going to serve small portions, you better have the most exquisite taste combinations that will satisfy the pallet, they don't even come close. Do yourself a favor and dont take a chance.

We ate here a month after this place opened, its been awhile. But,i recall the food was excellent and the service was excellent too. The chef came to our table to say hello and wanted to know if we were happy. We sat outside in their patio. This is one of the more expensive places on Smith, but reasonable considering the food and service.

The food was inconsistent at best - all the seafood ordered by our large group was probably caught the week before. The lobster may have been caught last year (the highest priced entre and literally the worse lobster i have ever tasted). Elaborate garnish and pseudo-chic miniature portions did nothing to cover up the mediocre quality (or my appetite). This restaurant felt like a NYC compromise - people don't move to Brooklyn for a cheaper NY, they move to Brooklyn for a whole other, unique experience.
