The first time I was at MetroCafe was about 2 years ago and the food was great! I have been back twice this year and I will never go back. The first time I figured it was just and off night but I was there last night and again...TERRIBLE FOOD! I had the chicken entree and it was disgusting. I ended up taking it home and giving it to my dogs. My friend had the Kobe Burger and it tasted funny. He took two bites and couldn't finish it. We also had the chicken dumplings and the guacomole - both were barely edible. The only thing going for this place now is the wait staff. They are all very friendly and knowledgable.

Pros: Food

.

Great menu and reasonable prices. The drink flight place-mats on the table really distract from the atmosphere and almost seem like they belong at a diner. The staff is friendly and courteous. Food was well prepared and tasty.

Pros: Nice wine selection and diverse food selection

Cons: Atmosphere is "almost upscale" could use some improvements

.

I really enjoyed the food and environment of this place! They have a great selection of wines and flavored beers and a menu ranging from hummus and pita (which is tasty!), pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches, and much more.

We enjoy a nice place to sit and talk about the days past and this is the place for us. We order a nice cheese and fruit platter which is reasonably priced however the wine is a little over priced so watch that.

I invited 11 friends. The service and food was excellent. The ambience was nice.I was able to have a nice conversation with friends not needing to shout above noise or music. It was a week night so we were able to linger as long as we wanted. Service was quick. We split a few bottles of wine among us. The wine was good. We were upstairs the tables were small so it was great fora large group of people. I met the owner through my friendand he let us have the 10 percent discount even if it was a party larger than 6. Great. I would recommend it and would come back here again.

was looking for a restaurant for dinner/wine/cheese and came across MetroCafe on citysearch. though i have yet to find a wine bar in the city that offers true wine and cheese pairings, MetroCafe was a good choice for their cheese and fruit platter and reasonably priced entrees. i ordered a flight of the cabernet, which was slightly overpriced for four 2oz glasses and a mediocre selection...no specific wine stood out. the cheese and fruit platter was very good, with crispy crostinis and very sweet fruit, especially the grapes. for the entree, i had the chicken with lemon butter sauce, which was juicy and flavorful. overall, i recommend MetroCafe for the comfortable atmosphere and good food, but wouldn't highly recommend it for the wine flights.

I've been to this joint twice in the past week and a half. It's a good place for amateur wine drinkers (yes, that's me) since their flights are pretty good and the wait staff are friendly and educational. Both times, our waitress recommended something for us according to what we like and I have yet to be disappointed. The place itself is nicely decorated. It was packed when I went for after-work drinks on a Thursday but was really quiet on Saturday night. The staff won't rush you if you sit for a long time; I was there for about two and a half hours. Prices are fairly decent and the food is phenomenal! You must try the guacomole and sesame chicken bites. Overall, this is a good after-work drink spot as well as a great romantic spot for a date.

Great wine, good food and superb service. The prices are reasonable, too. We used Metro's private room twice this month and were treated really well. Highly recommended!

My first time there, ordered a flight of reds, all were delicious! The service waxed and waned over the evening, overall really good. The place was quiet for 9.00 on a Thursday, but around 11.30 the place was raided by a million guys in business suits who were super noisy. Had it not been for the noise-level later on in the evening, this place would have been fabulous!

This isn't a 5-star restaurant - but no one's claiming it is- so don't be thrown off by the reviews given by the snotty wine connoisseurs below. This is a great place to go after work for a bite & drinks, or for a laid-back dinner on the weekends. Yeah, it's considered a wine bar because of their variety - but if you know anything about restaurants, you can tell by looking in the window exactly what to expect. It's casual dining at its finest. They have a great selection of food & wines, the servers are pleasant, and everything came out looking and tasting great. I had the burger, done to perfection. My friends had salmon and pasta primavera, and we all split the delicious apple pie for dessert. Everything was really good -- plus, we didn't have to worry about looking a litte tired and unkempt after work. This place is totally unpretentious and friendly and we didn't have to wait for a table. It's a great alternative to Union Square's standard go-to's if you're in the neighborhood & looking for some good food and decent prices. I highly recommend this place for what it is - an independent "Cheesecake Factory"-like restaurant.

MetroCafe has great salads at great prices...and they don't balk when you ask for substitutions/additions to the salads. The other food looks good too, though I haven't ordered it. They also have a wonderful selection of wine, and they're in a very central location (perfect meeting spot for Chelsea-Gramercy friends). Ambiance is nice, too.

We stopped in on a late afternoon looking for a good burger. The high expectations came from the Timeout article in the window of their ranking of top 10 burger joints in NYC (ed 2004). The place did not have any of the atmosphere one would expect from a wine bar. We ordered a lamb burger and a hamburger. Lamb burger was nice but the hamburger was not cooked to our preference (medium) and, in general, not spectacular. Ok to visit once but there is much better in NYC. Perhaps, we caught them on a off day and you will like it more....

Yes, I'm biased, because I have server friends that work here. This is a fun, friendly, and fantastic wine bar, despite what schloeberg23, who apparently has a chip on his shoulder says. The wine menu, contrary to what that idiot said, is vast and not full of cheap wines. There are about 100 wines by the glass and at different price levels, so I don't see how it's possible to not be able to find a wine you won't like. There are some moderately priced at $8 - $10 a glass, a some over $15 and more. That review is unnecessarily harsh and the nice folks at the MetroCafe are extremely bothered by it, especially condemning the entire menu based on one dish! Are you kidding? Shame on you instead, Schloejerk23!!

I can't believe this place gets away with calling itself a winebar! The wine list consists of the cheapest wines that are almost undrinkable! I had a really hard time finding a wine to order that wouldn't taste like tar! The food is not much better. I ordered Spaghetti with clams and got a plate full of canned clams...they should be ashamed of themselves!

I work close by and come in almost every day. These folks are the most decent people I've met and they always make sure my friends and I are always well taken care of service-wise. The food is terrific and just right for the money.
I've enjoyed the sesame chicken bites, shrimp dumplings, cobb salad, and macaroni and cheese (Get the cup size of the macaroni rather than full bowl- it's so heavy and rich it will fill you up! The cup size is not listed on the menu, but they will make it for you if you ask). The huge wine menu is organized very nicely into various categories of flights. My favorites are the Shiraz flight and the South American flight. Its not the most classiest nor the cheapest in the neighborhood. Its somewhere in the middle and its just about perfect for me.

The review below is completely off base. We have been here many, many times. There are hundreds and hundreds of wines by the taste (2oz), full glass, or in many changing combinations of flights. If you cannot find something here you like, there is something seriously wrong with your palate. The bartenders are friendly and well informed - ask questions, describe your tastes and you won't be disappointed.

the only redeeming part of our recent visit to metrocafe was the service -- our waitress was friendly and available the entire time. after reading many of the posted reviews, we were expecting a mellow, local, neighborhhood vibe. to our surprise, the energy was completely the opposite -- the vast majority of folks seemed to be B&T out for a night of cruising and hooking up (which is fine if that's your thing). the wine flights we ordered were mediocre and bland -- the spanish reds were watery and tasteless -- only the rioja is worth mentioning. and the european whites flight was even worse. the menu is vast and all over the map -- they should trim down the options and shoot for quality, not just quantity. the cheese plate is overpriced and underwhelming in terms of portions. serious oenophiles should go elsewhere.

Stopped in on a recent weeknight with a friend. The menu is all over the place with Dim Sum next to regular American cuisine. I had a tuna steak which was average. Their stregnth is definitely the wine and cheese selection. We each had a flight. The results were 3 very good glasses and 1 or 2 below average glasses. The bottle selction is excellent and the prices were decent. We had a cheese sampler that was great.

If you don't know about wine, I recommend you ask the waiter/waitress. It's their job to help you pick out something you actually like. The prices range from $28+... probably a bottle you'd like would be between $30-40...

There is a bar area on the right, and also tables that you can sit down and order your wine. Also, a food menue. Though I have not tried their dimsum, Dim sum is not supposed to be $5 a plate. So I didn't get it... However, appetizers such as calamari, sesame chicken, fries, are all good eats.. .little snacks while you are enjoying your wine and conversation. Good atmosphere, not too crowded and not too loud when I went... (actually, I think I was the loudest one in there...) young and old alike visit this place. Good place for a weekday wine run with some friends.

I generally order takeout from this restaurant and it's always pretty darn good. The only place I can order dim sum in this neighborhood that's more than decent. But I have gone to the wine bar and ordered appetizers and wine, which is kind of fun! I find the staff very friendly and always easy to talk to. It truly is a friendly neighborhood place!

I asked the bartender for his opinon on a Syrah ... and he didn't have much to say. In fact, it sounded like he never tried it. When I tasted it, it tasted like a glass of wine I would get at a bar that had just red or white .. not a glass of wine at a wine bar that offered flights. When I told the bartender that I didn't like my wine, he didn't care. He just looked at me like I was crazy and didn't try to offer me another choice. When I left the bar to have dinner in the restaurant with a friend who joined me, and left the glass of wine half full on the bar, no one made any effort toward customer satisfaction. There are too many bars in NYC to pay $12.50 for a glass of wine and not enjoy it all.

I ont uderstand why this place isnt more crowded. I have been there 6 or 7 times always eating at the bar and its never jammed. Its a good very casual 1st date place if you dont want an overly romantic place. Also great to go with a client or a few friends. The kobe burger is excellent and so are all the other things we have tried on the menu. Very reasonable prices and if you are a recovering wino you might want to avoid this place because they have a huge selection of wines. If your date likes wine bring her here and she might get to tipsy you might have a shot of hooking up.

whenever i would like to enjoy good, undisrupted conversation with a few friends i choose to come here. the music not too loud, crowd mature and unpretentious, and the food is reasonablly priced. i especially enjoy the dim sum and sauteed beef, not to mention the long list of wine selection. A flight of wine is an especially fun experience.

I like this place a lot. Not intimidating and not snobby at all, for a place with 100 wines by the glass. The flights of wine are neat. My favorite is the Shiraz flight (Australian wines) because I genuinely liked every glass of wine in the flight. My second favorite is the Sideways Pinot Noir flight. Pizzas are great, Dim sum is terrific also. Service is friendly and easygoing, and I never felt rushed for hanging out too long at the bar.

Good, but disappointing. The place is very nicely appointed, slick and contemporary. But cold. Not very warm or inviting. Server was OK, nothing to talk about, not very knowledgable.

The wine list was good, with lot's of tasting options. That's the strength of the place. But the wine tasted stale, like it had been opened and lingered for awhile. The bar food was OK. Not great.

Unfortunately this is a place that is not living up to its potential.

Booked the $39 price fixe menu for New Years eve with 3 friends. The food --OK --salmon tartar --boring. Kobe beef filet mignon delicious! But there was at least a half hour wait in between each round of drinks --when a manager came by --we put in an order for a round & he forgot about us too! I think our waiter had a friend in the private party upstairs that kept his attention. The martinis were great (cosmo & my husband had a kettle one). My advice --skip the table service & sit at the bar--the bartenders are attentive & really know how to make a drink --the waitstaff --well --to put it simply -THEY STINK!

This place is a real treat! A group of us sat at a table in one of the booths and ordered a bunch of dim sum appetizers, pizza and wine flights. It was a blast! Really friendly staff and not at all intimidating for a wine bar.
The wine list is pretty easy to navigate and many of the wines are inexpensive, but again, the flights are the real reason to check the wine menu out. We had the Summer Whites Flight which was at a decent price ($13.00). Shrimp Dumplings and the Pork Spring Rolls stood out for me. Plus the White Pizza with apples and goat cheese was a knockout!

All in all, a great time and I look forward to going back to try out the rest of the menu.

The restuarant was empty. Felt uncomfortable to be one of the only people there. Food was average, matched up to the low prices. Dim Sum was cold (possibly frozen?). Good place if looking to save a couple dollars.

This is a great spot to stop in for some fine wines and fun atmosphere. I had numerous flights of wine between myself and a friend and found each one both inventive and enjoyable. Although I had checked the lists, once I ordered each flight I found them to be of grater value than originally thought. Although I think a fair criticism is the vintages weren't ideal, I found the quality and price more than surpassed any first blush concerns. I will be back here regularly as this was a great value and atmosphere!

Although I think a fair criticism is the vintages weren't ideal, I found the quality and price more than surpassed any first blush concerns. I will be back here regularly as this was a great value and atmosphere!

Pros: Quality of Flights, Prices, Kobe Beef

.

After half a dozen visits to MetroCafe, I can honestly say that this is the best new wine bar in the city. Perfect place for dates or with a small group of friends -- laid back and not too noisy. The wine selection is amazing with selections offered in tastes, glasses and bottles. New selections are added every time I visit. The ecclectic food menu (dim sum, kobe burgers, seafood, pizzas) is a terrific value and the quality is great -- try the mussels and the white pizza. Management and staff are attentive and helpful.
