One of my favorite bars in Chicago, even with the treacherous stairs leading to the bathroom! The eclectic atmosphere, fun jukebox, and mind numbing martinis add up to countless nights of fun.

Pros: Great drinks, great staff, great jukeboc

Cons: Really steep stairs

I can't believe what I saw. First, I thought my buddy had ditched me, however, I noticed my friend being dragged outside. Little to be known, my friend is a martial artiest and could have made an embarassing scene, however, he choose to be led out. Why the doorman did this, no one knows, he didn't even't want to let us know he "kicked" our buddy out. I have always had a good time at Matilda's previously, but I doubt I will ever be back.

Eclectic atmosphere, no TV's, great music and decent food. Plus, the back room has several nice booths to hang out in...

Love it...

My friends and I love Matilda's! It's got really great food and a jammin' jukebox that is updated frequently. The atmosphere is eclectic, yet hip. You can enjoy playing pool or darts in the upstairs, with the added bonus of not having to fight smoke. Or you can make your way downstairs where you can dance and light one up. We actually rented a part of Matilda's out for a birthday bash! The bartenders were very friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was intimate, and we were able to bring our own iPod of music to listen to. Matildas is a great deal with a real neighborhood feel! Check it out!

Matilda was the first bar/restaurant I became familiar with when I moved to Chicago over two years ago, and its still one of my top three favorite places in the city. Because of the cozy/quirky atmosphere, friendly staff, and great juke box options it has the feel of a comfortable neighborhood dive, without actually looking like one. Its a classy place with top-notch food and drinks, and a fun place to hang out for a solo drink after work, a casual date, or with a group of friends.

I have been to Matilda's many times and it is an awesome bar. I have comments about two different types of experiences there, regular visits and private parties (in Baby Atlas).

First thing that stands out is the funky atmosphere and the sign saying you must be 23 to enter. The decor is visually interesting and inviting. I've had several menu items, including the flatbreads, fish tacos, and wings. They are all excellent. The staff is a huge plus, extremely friendly and really add to the experience.

I have also thrown several parties in Baby Atlas. If you have a group of say up to 50 this is one of the most fun places to have your party. The $25 / 3 hours is totally reasonable and you can bring your own ipod for music if you want. I don't know how it happens but by the end of the night we're always dancing like maniacs.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better combination of fun, service, and value than Matilda's

I live nearby and I consider Matilda to be the only worthwhile option in the neighborhood. The food is delicious, the music is always solid and the staff is extremely friendly. The beer selection is diverse, ranging from PBR (value), to something really German with an impossible to pronounce name (quality). Best of all, the environment accommodates both quiet conversation and rambunctious dancing. Matilda is always a great night waiting to happen!

I have now made it to Matilda several times, and have fallen in love. The decor, somewhat dark and sensual, creates a wonderfully relaxed ambience. The music rocks--last time I was there they were rolling through a Pink Floyd album. The drinks are plentiful, as they have an extensive tap with some great selections (Harp, Stella, Fat Tire...). However, my typical motivation for a trip to Matilda is for the food. I had one of the best burritos of my life here (hard to beat one made with filet mignon), and it is impossible to find a better deal than their $1 fish tacos. Highly recommended if you're looking to enjoy some quality food and drink in a great atmosphere.

Matilda/Baby Atlas is by far my favorite bar in Chicago... has been for nearly 10 years, and always will be! The atmosphere is great: eclectic, modern industrial style decor but still with a sense of warmth; pool tables for those inclined; great juke box (you won't find the typical Lincoln Park Top 40 on here); much-better-than-pub-food fare; and a fun, welcoming staff. Come in early and take a minute to get to know the staff and management; you won't be disappointed. Take a trek downstairs (be careful on the stairs!) to check out the more intimate confines of Baby Atlas. A broader clientele on weekends makes for good eye candy, with a healthy mix of casual and trendy. Drink prices have risen a bit over the past few years, but it's still the best place on Chicago's northside to meet friends for a drink any time!

My favorite bar in chicago. The jukebox is incredible, food is affordable and tasty, and the staff's friendly. Somehow the place has managed to divide two entirely different atmospheres; lounge upstairs and funky dance dive downstairs. Surrounded by the neighborhoods of lincoln park, lakeview, wriggleville, and boystown the crowd is always diverse.

I love this place. Every time I go there I have the best time. The other night I brought four of my girlfriends there on a Friday and we went down their crazy stairs into the Baby Atlas. It's such a sensual, loungie feel down there and the music was awesome. We danced all night. The bartender was playing hip/hop all night out of his iPod. Love it. And there service was great. And I always meet great people at this bar. The food is fantastic, too. Flatbread #1. I swear by it. So. Great staff. Great Music. Great Crowd. Great Time. I'll go there anytime. If you've been there and didn't like it, you must've been too drunk or something. Or didn't meet me. Ha! Kidding. See you there!

One of a few bars in Chicago that has such unique diversity. It's a great meeting place for drinks after work, and it's cozy enough to meet a date for dinner and cocktails. During the weekend, nights at Matida's are high energy, hopping, and full of young people. Baby Atlas, downstairs, is small and intimate, but bustles with energy in the late evenings. The food is amazing with nice presentation even for "bar food". The staff and bartenders are very friendly, and the owner Kevin, always makes sure he gets to know the customers and is very accommodating. Whether you want a low key place to meet, book a party, or meet lots of new interesting people, Matilda's, is an all in one neighborhood bar.

Matilda's is always a good place to relax after work or on a Friday night. Their broiled tomato and cheese appetizer is really great. Actually, I've never had a bad eating experience there.

Spirit...No other adjective describes this amazing place more appropriately. Emerging from the encapsulating character of an unparalleled staff comes a spirit that permeates one's evening to the very core. It's a sprit that first manifests itself in the casual fervor of Matilda's eclectic atmosphere. With three entirely unique experiences woven together into one unforgettable space, this bar leaves no appetite unsatisfied. This, married with a finely assembled clientel that covers all ends of the demographic spectrum can make even a first-timer feel at home. Don't believe me...stop by and prove me wrong. I'll be the guy smiling in the corner stool.

Pros: Amazing People, Great Food, Cheap Drinks...and the basement lounge in Chicago.

Cons: Isn't open an 8th day every week

Matilda is just the best, best place for so many reasons--from the amazing music and delicious food to the friendly staff and eclectic decor--its my ideal hang-out. My only small complaint is that it gets busy on weekends, but that's pretty much every bar in Chicago. The service is still great and they treat their customers--all customers--wonderfully with food & drink specials and themed parties all year long. Did I mention the food is a-MAZING?? You really can't put bar + food in same sentence here. Matilda has been my favorite bar since I first wandered in late September 2005. I have since moved away from the neighborhood but still make an effort to come back as much as possible. Its perfect for hanging out on weeknights, celebrating a special night with friends, or meeting up with a ex-lover--I really could not think up a better place.

Living a block away, my husband and I have been to Matilda's countless times in the last two years. We've never, and I repeat NEVER, had a bad experience, either with the quality of food or with the service. The wait-staff and bartenders are friendly, down-to-earth and attentive. The drinks are fantastic (especially the chocolate martinis) and the menu offers tasty twists on your ordinary "bar food" and offers light dishes as well. I highly recommend Matilda's to anyone visiting the North Side who wants a laid-back atmosphere, excellent food, and great service.

Matilda's always has a good crowd that isn't overrun with the college kids. Patrons are friendly, staff is entertaining and personable. Perfect place for afterwork dinner and drinks or to plant yourselves on a weekend evening. The music that they play is always exactly what you didn't know you wanted to hear. You can almost always find a table, drinks are reasonable and I've never had a bad dinner there. Baby Atlas is great for a change of pace from the bar upstairs, you can lounge in the booths or dance in a cozy atmosphere. Definately check it out!

I recently had my 30th birthday party at Matilda's downstairs lounge, babyATLAS, and it was a blast. The drink specials offered were much better than offered elsewhere, and the room was just the right size for my 40 friends. I brought my own iPod playlist for the party, which was a cool perk. After the party ended, we hung out upstairs to sip on a few martinis before moving on. Everything was perfect, including the staff, the customers, and the atmosphere. Keep up the good work!

Love the bar, love the music, love the food, love the staff...what more can I say? I have been a regular at this bar for 5 years and I cannot get enough of it. The atmosphere is great, there is always a cool crowd and the waitstaff is always accommodating and friendly. Weeknights are great because there are people there, but it is not too crowded and the atmosphere is chill. Tuesdays are the best because there are $1.00 fish tacos and a beer special. The weekends are more crowded, but in the way that you want it to be on a weekend...a crowd with a good, fun vibe. I would highly recommend this bar any night of the week!

I am a regular customer to Matilda during the week because of their fantastic menu, specifically the best fish tacos in Chicago. It is a nice low key crowd during the week and the servers are all very friendly and quick. I have been on the weekends and the crowd is quite different and really becomes more of a young rowdy bar, but I continue to keep it as a mainstay dinner and drinks spot during the week.

I have been in Chicago for the past 6 years. In that time, I have been to many neighborhood bars and grills and let me tell you...Matilda's is a 10 in my book. Where to start??? Well, first off, the staff are AWESOME! There are few places in Chicago with staff and management as friendly and willing to make your experience memorable as they are. In my many visits there, I have also had the pleasure of trying many of their menu offerings. Suffice to say that EVERYTHING I have had has been of the utmost quality. Their offerings are at the perfect price point that anyone on any budget who wants to go out and have dinner and drinks. Baby Atlas is a great place to hang out after your meal. The bartender who I usually see down there is really friendly and is, not to sound cliched, "quick with a joke and a light of your smoke". The music selection played at Baby Atlas make one want to dance (even if you typically do not).

In all, Matilda's and Baby Atlas is a GREAT place to spend any night of the week if you want to have a blast and eat great food. Since introduction, I have been there more times than I can count. I am looking VERY forward to my next opportunity to go back....

Overall EXCELLENT spot! On the weekend it's busy. Really busy. However, it's a great spot to go to if you're in the mood for something a little more upscale but without the attitudes of downtown chicago. Young professionals fill the bar which is a nice change from the usual DePaul/Loyola Irish Bar type of crowd. GREAT GREAT GREAT FOOD! It's hard to get your food quickly on the weekends because everything is made fresh at the time of ordering (which I thought was pretty freakin' cool). So, my final thought is this: Excellent place! Really great place for good food. Great drinks and even better staff. Everyone from the Doorman to the Bartenders to the Owner was enjoyable and really friendly. They even say your name and give a genuine hello when you show your ID at the door! Very cool!

Been going to this place for quite some time and I don't see that changing. Weeknights are great -- it's laid-back and the staff is awesome. Weekends do get busy like anywhere else, but they work hard to keep orders flowing. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a good drink and a great jukebox. A steady turnover of music makes for a really good mix of classics and new stuff. The menu is fantastic and I highly recommend the cheese fries with everything, one of their burgers, or one of the pasta entrees. You won't be disappointed!

Great wine list and hospitable staff. One night I sat at the bar with a friend and talked wine with the bartender (who is also part owner-- I think) for over an hour while he poured me tastes of his selection. Before I left he wrote down all the bottles I liked with a description of the flavor I ascribed to each one when I tasted it. The most impressive part of this experience is that the bar was pretty crowded and he still took the time to do this for me.

I love the atmosphere and the demographic this place attracts as well. It's comfortable and classy without being pretentious. All in all, great little place. Esepecially fitting for a week night drink with friends; It's less crowded but not empty.

Do not go here unless you know people. It takes a long time to get anything that you order, and the order comes out incorrectly. The whole Ipod music thing downstairs is annoying. I think they let their staff drink which is cool but it reflects as the night progresses.

I have gone there regularly for awhile, but I have never seen what happened tonight. Someone was extremely rude and disrespectful to a couple of customers. Other than that, it was ok. When the bar gets busy, good luck trying to order a drink. The concept is good but this place is catering to a certain crowd and if you're not part of it, then it feels like they completely ignore you and in tonight's case, really rude to some people.

I like to spend time rating resturaunts and clubs I have attended over the last 10 years in Chicago.
Matilda is one of the best I have ever rated. Food, Value, Atmosphere, Juke Box, and friendly service is the best. The bar menu is well above average and is well prepared with good value. It has a great bar in the front for casual dates and get togeathers. A back room with a pool table and booths for light parties and the baby Atlas room downstairs is ripe with Vibe, opens later in the evening and will deliver underground feel.
Take a date or take a few mates, but make sure you take my advice on this gem.
Oh by the way easy El, Cab access.

Pros: value, feel, food and drink

I started going to Matilda around the time I moved next door to the place in 1999, and have continued to go ever after I moved out of the neighborhood three years ago. It's always been a great neighborhood hangout and even more so these days, is a perfect antidote for all these dark-mahogany, flat-screen emporiums that have infected the North Side bar sceen like a virus recently. I've found the staff to be friendly and attentive, the food selection tasty and eclectic (try the fish tacos) and the martinas potent and very well-mixed. An impressively diverse juke box offers selections ranging from Wilco to Arcade fire Johnny Cash to R.L. Burnside. It can get very crowded on weekends, but I've never seen a line to get in. Check out Baby Atlas downstairs if you're looking for a more intimate environment, just watch your step going down the stairs. One of the best bars in Chicago.

This place is awesome. The atmosphere is wonderful and can be both chill and softly thumping or a fantastic party. The decor is perfectly ecclectic and balanced and the food is extremely good. I haven't had one bad dish, yet. The bartenders and wait staff are really friendly and excellent at what they do. And they're hot. Mmm. All of them. Oh, and there are few jukeboxes in this city that can hold a candle to the one here.

Tuesday and Wednesday I like the upstairs bar and from Thursday to Friday I prefer the one downstairs, The Baby Atlas. It's a mini lounge, very comfortable, and the guy behind the bar with the iPod kicks ass. So does the girl on Saturdays with her crazy metal rock.

I highly recommend this place for dates, dinner and just grabbing a few drinks.

Matilda is one of the best bars I have every been in. Honestly, it might sound kinda crazy, but everything about it is awesome. They have the best jukebox, the food is amazing (which means great for a date), the bartenders and waitress are good people and you don't have to yell to talk to your friends. Matilda and Baby-Atlas is the coolest place that i've been to in a loooong time!!!!!

Pros: Service, Music, Food

Matilda is a great place to head when you don't want to go to any old dive bar, but also don't want to stand in line and pay a huge cover at some pretentious club. Somehow ordering a Bud Light or a Chocolate Martini both feel natural here.

Matilda's is a refreshing change to the Wrigleyville / Lincoln Park fare. Being an Bostonian, I dig places with interesting decor, charismatic people, and good music.

Weekend nights are very lively and they have been doing some fun stuff during the weeks like wine tastings and food specials.

Oh yeah! Matilda's has a super good wine list for a bar. I was quite impressed.

The two-room Matilda glows behind storefront windows--all candlelight, blond wood, chrome accents, celestial colors and artful wall hangings--on a quiet pre-Belmont bustle corner. Clean-cut, casual 20- and 30-somethingsā€¦
