Loud music forces everyone to scream in order to converse, seem to cater to an under-35 loud crowd who drink way too much and then start shouting at the top of their voices, seemed AC was broken as it was very warm inside on the night I was there and we were not allowed to sit outside, waiter brought the wrong margaritas at first then brought the WORST NASTY-TASTING strawberry margaritas I ever have had in 50 years! $15 each down the drain! Two sips of mine and I still am trying to get the bitterness out of my mouth after an hour. First visit and DEFINITELY the last. I hate feeling like this when I go to a restaurant/bar. Based on what I experienced, they should be ashamed to open their doors until they get their act together.

Went to Maracas on Cinco de Mayo because Benny's was full. The wait wasn't terrible and the staff was really nice - from the host to the waitress to the manager to the bus boy. However, this place just doesn't TASTE good and it's expensive! The margaritas are $15 for 23 oz and don't have much flavor to them. I ordered lime and it had no zip, my friend ordered pear and it was pink. The food tasted like the Mexican I can make in my kitchen from a box. It was there, it was fine, but it really wasn't great. Something is missing. The bill was far too high for how mediocre the food was. Almost $40 per person for a drink and a plate of dull Mexican food. Skip this place!

So-
If you want inexpensive GOOD tasting dinner and bargain drinks- COME HERE!
This cute little restaurant serves it up with flair... a littlle much? maybe -but if the decor reminds you of the inside of a pinata then have a couple drink specials.. the cleverly hidden liquor taste will have you repeating "can i have one more?"- that is IF your waiter hasnt already asked you! But believe me, when you get up to go relieve yourself- the gravity will remind you that , yes, YOU HAVE HAD LIBATIONS TODAY!
The waiters have always been soo fun and friendly.

It's a mom and pop cute little dive! Don't come here with attitude! PLEASE CHECK THAT AT THE DOOR. I hate when snotty customers give the waiters a hard time... due to their assumptions of where they are! This place is for good times so ...take the stick out from where it is, relax, let your hair down, grab a frozen margarita, be kind to your waiters (remember- they handle your food), leave your worries and troubles at the door and HAVE A FRIGGIN GOOD TIME!
(sorry- im a fellow waiter at a local restaurant and love this place-could ya tell?) These kids, attractive and such, work for their tips so... if you cant tip AT LEAST %15 - stay home!
well.... thats it!
Come by- have a good time, tip well, and RELAX!!! Sleep it off, repeat every other day!

This is my new favorite place! I went here for the first time this past Saturday and had a blast. It was college night and we got $3 margaritas ON A SATURDAY! I had the guacamole (that our server made fresh) and the stuffed chicken which were both fantastic. Our server was Jeff, I think that was his name. I could be wrong I had a lot of margaritas. Everything from the staff to the decor was really upbeat and fun. They also do something special if it's your birthday. I won't ruin the surprise, but let's just say I am so coming here for my birthday (and their all you can drink brunch). HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS PLACE SOONER? YO AMO MARACAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went there for their brunch this weekend. The service was horrible. We rarely saw our waitress. We had to ask for her multiple times. She kept forgetting to bring stuff to us and messed up our orders. After we got our bill, it took her 20 minutes to come pick it up. She did not come back with the bill for another 30 minutes and we had to get up and find her. When we received our completed bill, they chargerd every meal on the wrong credit cards. Even though we specifically stated and wrote which meal goes to which card. We will never be dining at this place again and do not recommend it to anyone. Its a shame that there is a 20% gratuity added to the bill, because the service does not deserve it

Went here for lunch on a Sunday. First of all we had no utensils and we actually had to get up and get the waiters attention for him to finally bring us forks. The portions are so small that I could have finished it in 1 bite. That would be the case if I actually ate the food. I took one bite and that was it for me. The popcorn shrimp was disgusting! As if they reheated frozen food. The tiny burgers had nasty meat. It was salty and had a musky taste. The margarita was okay, but it was so small. I will never ever go back to this place...stay away!!

I don't understand the need for bashing a place so badly. Take it from me: the food's good, the prices are far beyond reasonable, the staff is extremely friendly and very compitent, the margaritas are delicious, and the atmosphere is so much fun.

It's very unfortunate that most reviewers post their opinions only when they have an unenjoyable experience.

In my opinion, Maracas (and other great restaurants) can only become better by losing the bickering customers.

Last weekend a few friends and I decided to stop at Maracas for their brunch. Their service, food - drinks used to be excellent but now they are back at square one. To summarize the experience:

1) 30 minutes before the waiter even came to greet us
2) THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO CHARGE $3.00 DOLLARS FOR EXTRA CHIPS AND AN OVER CUMIN FLAVORED, WATER DOWN SALSA!
3) Waiter got order wrong or perhaps kitchen
4) They monitor time at table so they save on the "All you can drink scam brunch"
5) Used the cheapest tequila possible to make Margaritas - we all know good tequila and mixer does no a yellow margarita make
6) Staff lack customer service skills - perhaps it's not staff but the MANAGER since it starts at the top
7) Ground beef poured over the tostada salad looks like Alpo with water
8) Water glasses are spotty - PLEASE USE CASCADE!
9) Utensils are tarnished
10) Get rid of those UGLY GREEN PLASTIC table covers = TACKY!

So if you wish to waste your money - this is the place to come to or you may decide to take the time to research and indeed find BETTER Mexican places as we have which are truly worth the money we need to work for so very hard these recession days.

P.S. The only reason I gave a 1 star rating is because if I did not the review would not publish. My real rating = NEGATIVE 10 Stars

Cindy, Vixen and Shadow

Pros: Nothing at least any more

Cons: All

I met some friends here for dinner and drinks after work. Drinks - good. Food - some of the worst food I have ever eaten. The chopped meat (whatever they call it, it is sloppy-joe like) taco was inedible. And funny, they required a credit card to make a reservation. When I got there I expected a nice place, not a glorified restaurant bar, which is what it is. Go for drinks, not for food.

I like the rice and the salsa sauce, homefries, chicken chalatas, avacados, and the taco/burritos. Soups are also spicy and delicious. Mines well save this place for a special treat on a rainy day

I went here with some friends for brunc a couple weeks back and I will not be returning. There are way to many better brunch spots in NY.

My gripe is that the food and drinks are subpar.

I got a steak wrap or something and the unlimited drinks add-on which is $5.

You get unlimited drinks from 90 minutes from the point you are seated. The server actually writes the time you are seated on a card on your table. A bit tacky, I think. And if the bar or your server is running slow, it's not really the most fair deal.

The mimosas were all OJ with a splash of champagne. I've never had such a weak mimosa anywhere.

The food was nasty. The steak in my dish was like ground up dog food and they breakfast potatos were mashed potatos.

They charge extra for everything.

Basically, i felt insulted by the food and the drink. Why offer an unlimited drink special and the insult your patrons by serving OJ with a splash of champagne? Why is the food quality so low here--this is NY!

The vibe is festive, the service was good, but to me quality of food and drink is more important.

Kicked off a bacholorette party dinner at Maracas on Saturday evening...and what a kick off it was! Colleen, one of the managers not only assisted with the stress free preparations but ensured a stress free time with festivities that included spinning disco globes, Mexican sombreros, and without request played the song "Going to the Chapel!" What a celebration when the entire restaurant stops to sing along with you! Drinks were strong but good, food was delicious...the stuffed chicken is a must try that was recomended by Raul a hottie waiter with a killer smile and excellent service! Everything about this place from the management, service staff, to other patrons was certainly something to keep coming back for!

I had a birthday dinner here in June on a Tuesday and I was very pleased! The atmosphere is really fun and the food is good/reasonably priced. It wasn't too loud but not too quiet either. The drinks were delicious and very nicely decorated. Their birthday package including a tequila shot, a cake, and a sombrero was really fun!

It amazes me why places go from bad to good and then go back to being terrible.
It is true what other reviews say about Maracas now days. THEY have the nerve to charge $3.00 dollars for additional chips and salsa. Next time (if there is a next time) I will bring my own bag of chips and salsa that does not taste like you are swallowing bags of cumin. Can someone tell the Salsa maker at Maracas to check his/her taste buds?
The food is lousy. I ordered that tostada salad and though I had requested the Chicken one I received the beef and it look like ALPO poured over lettuce!
The prices have gone up for the brunch and that is cool BUT do the service and food have to suffer as well?
The waiter was nice and attempted to be accommodating but at the end the experience which used to be a good has returned to being a horrible one.
There are indeed better places in NYC than Maracas ....too bad management seems to be changing the place so often..
Do not waste your time or money on this place

I went here for the first time in July and again this past weekend. Both times we celebrated a friend's birthday. We had the same waiter (Nino) both times and he was a great, sweet, and knowledgable server! He even recommended a dessert for us to try (I don't know the name of it but it tasted like warm nacho chip shaped cinnamon toast crunch with ice cream on it. Ask for it, it's amazing.

The drinks are strong but in my personal opinion when I'm paying $16.00 for one I want them to be! They make a mean Long Island Iced Tea. I highly recommend it! Don't let the price deter you; their $16.00 drinks are 23 oz - so you figure you're almost paying for the size of two drinks really. If you're celebrating a friend's birthday be sure to let them know. Birthday music will come over the speakers throughout the whole restaurant and servers will bring a piece of birthday cake and a shot of tequila out to your birthday boy/girl, give them a sombrero, and take their picture with a polaroid camera for a keepsake! (Warning this costs $10 but I think it's $10 well spent!)

One other thing to note: I don't think I'd recommend this place for a first date. The music can be very loud so if you don't know the person well, it's probably not the "intimate" atmosphere you're looking for.

If you plan on going here my advice is to make reservations the day before. We did this both times we visited and were able to walk right in without waiting. The last time we called them to tell them we were running 5 minutes late and they were very gracious about it. Great atmosphere, drinks, service, food - the total package as far as restaurants are concerned! I plan to return again soon (and this time I won't wait till another friend's birthday rolls around!)

Maracas has a really festive atmosphere. It's like Mexican Christmas in there. Great drink specials, very good food (I especially like the enchiladas... get the sampler entree with three different kinds), and a young and perky wait staff. On weekends the draw is the brunch with unlimited brunch drinks, but during the week, Gringo Bingo on Tuesday and Karaoke on Wednesday bring something different to the place. Excellent for birthday parties.

My friends and I discovered this restaurant stopping by last Saturday! There was a beautiful host and also a very funny friendly Manager that right away even with full house he seated us in a very comfortable table. We were served by jingi (sorry) and he was great!!! There was 4 birthdays parties over there and with la bamba and other songs we had a great great fun!!! The very strong Margaritas were delicious as the Manager recommended, "try the strawberry and mango, because there are make with fresh fruit" and it really was!!!! The food was great! ..But the most amazing thing was all the employees, manager, bartender were having a good time, dancing, making jokes and taking care of the tables!!! We definably will be back and I totally recommend this place!!!!!!

I love Maracas and come here with my friends all the time!!!

The best things about Maracas? Definitely brunch on Saturday and Sunday!!! The brunch is "all you can drink" mimosas, bloody marys, and frozen margaritas (plus food) for $12.95!!!!!! My friends and I get an early buzz there and that sets us up for the day!!! The food is great too!!!

My other favorite thing about Maracas is the super fun atmosphere on Tuesday nights!! they play "gringo bingo" every week with Alexia (A girl dressed up in drag)....there is singing and dancing and bingo (and prizes) and cheap drinks...i love it!!!

Maracas has a comfy, neighborhood bar kind of feeling and it is super fun!!!!

Pros: Strong margaritas and fun atmosphere!

We walked by and saw the disco lights from the street. The place was packed with big groups of parties. We had a drink at the bar - Great frozen margaritas! For dinner we shared some great queso fundido, chipotle mixed grill and cripy nachos - All very good! For dinner we had traditional Mexican with huge burritos and some of the best sizzling fajitas I ever had. The place was full of birthdays and the party rolled on.

Went here to start off my birthday night drinking. The 3$ Monday margaritas were really good. I love mexican food and this place was no exception; everything tasted good. I will definately stop by again when I'm in the area.

Pros: Good happy hour drinks, good food

The food was great and the 'ritas are cheap. But they advertise $3 margaritas on Mondays from 12pm to 12am. It's just not true. They don't even open till 4pm. When I asked the managment why they were still advertising noon they could only repeat over and over that they open at 4pm. So they're clearly not too bright. But, like I said, the food is good. The night life is fun. Just don't plan on any luch meetings with the girls.

Over a year ago I went with a friend to Maraca's uptown location for dollar margarita's. My friend and I enjoyed delicious drinks and some of the best guacomole we had tasted. I had wanted to return since that time, but since I live in the East Village and rarely make it above 14th I never did.
I was so happy to see that they had opened in the West Village. After attending a march and rally last Saturday my friends and I were in need of some cool air, a nice strong drink, and a bit to eat.
Maraca's delivered on all counts. We were seated by an extremely friendly host and served by an understanding and patient waitress. She took time answer all our questions. I had a delicious avacodo/cucumber soup and we shared the fabulous guacomole. The drinks were strong and extremely tasty.
This is a great place to begin or end and evening out.

Margaritas are good, no question about it. The food isn't as good as some other places. The restaurant has a fun and festive atmosphere, if the food were better I'd be more inclined to return. One of my favorite place lost their liquor license and I'm looking for good Mexican food with margaritas in the neighborhood, I know where to go in Hell's Kitchen but still searching in the Village.

It is tasteless all the way around - gaudy decor, bland food, unimpressive drinks. Enchiladas were awful, rice was undercooked. I will never go back.

WATCH THE MARGARITAS! They are SUPER strong - When the tequila disco lights go on you know the party has started! The food was great! Enchiladas fabulous and the Ancho tuna HUGE and well cooked! Margaritas only $3 buck all day and night on Mondays, and I hear a big outdoor cafe is opening soon. This is the NEW Mexican place in Greenwich Village!

As soon as you walk into this restaurant you feel like a good time is going to be had! Everyone is wearing a smile and is having a great time in this hidden find in Midtown. The food is always fresh, the staff very attentive and friendly plus willing to give great recommendations! The margaritas, sangrea and quacamole are a staple here as well as the amazing tequilla selection they stock!
