This is very unique and lovely B&B. Very friendly people on staff and the owners could not have been more accommodating. It's in an ideal location with beautiful gardens and great jacuzzi with nice, strong jets.

The bed was delightfully comfortable. The room was tastefully decorated with cherry wood furniture and a lovely comfortable sofa along with a desk, bookcase and apartment size refrigerator. The powder room/bathroom was beautiful. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and the owner James is enjoyable.

We celebrated our 30th anniversary. This room felt like we were in Hawaii which we love. Our daughter referred us to this place and we are so grateful. It is so nice to check out once in a while.

It was a rainy weekend in supposedly sunny San Diego, but the hubby and I decided to make the most of our 10th anniversary. Spent it in Cardiff. It was an awesome experience will have to come back on a typical sunny and hot Southern California day. At least the room took care of us.

This was our first little vacation getaway as a couple. The perfect place for some relaxing quiet time together. We had a wonderful dinner at the Marine Room and later went on the rooftop to enjoy the fire for a little while, unfortunately the rain decided to make an appearance. Wonderful Gardens, Waterfalls, Atmosphere and Ambience.

I love how each room has a different theme and the design and decor were so well thought out! We stayed in the sweetheart room that has a beautiful dome ceiling, and a sweetheart shaped jacuzzi. We loved the ocean views, great breakfast, and relaxing atmosphere. The fountain, relaxing music, and rooftop jacuzzi and terrace are wonderful! Even the hand stenciling throughout our room is so beautiful! We will definitely recommend this to others! What a great place to spend our Valentine's get-away!

Nobody said anything about "The Shanty" - a motorcycle bar directly below the hotel that features louder-than-loud music blasting until 2.a.m. supplemented by the roar of choppers. We closed our windows but could not stop the throbbing beat. Boom! Booom! Boom! Then the cops came to break up a motorcycle gang fight at 2 a.m. Calls to the front desk said "We can't do anything about it." Add to all that the cockroach in the bathroom in the morning, we checked out a day early. At least they didn't charge us for leaving a day early, but I was REALLY angry and the guy at the front desk knew it.

they don't tell you about the noisy bar that goes til 3 a.m. and they tell you about how cute their "themed" rooms are like "mirrors" or "posted beds" make up for the insects in the bathroom or grime on the windows. This place has seen better days. the beach is just 3 blocks away, good for surfers

Cardiff by the Sea Lodge rates in the top 5% of all the best places we have stayed. We have traveled the entire Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico and stayed in dozens of wonderful places, and they are at the top. They are very friendly and accommodating. Each of their theme based rooms are uniquely decorated including Jacuzzi tubs, original artwork murals and upgraded furnishings. Many rooms have ocean views, and they are conveniently located across Coast Highway from the beach. The sunset views from the rooftop garden are the best you will find. The rooftop fire pit and Jacuzzi provide a great place to gather. The Lodge is designed to be both a beautiful place and has been carefully constructed to ensure guest room privacy and quite. We have stayed there a dozen times and will definitely return.

Rooms have a lot of deferred maintenance and hairs in sink and shower. We had made reservations so we had to stay, but just the feel of the lobby tells you that things are not well attended to. More of a motel 6 than a nice Bed and Breakfast which is how they bill themselves.

For an anniversary weekend last fall, I took my wife to Cardiff Lodge, and I think they define Romance. The rooftop views of the ocean, complimented with a fireplace and hot tub started our evening off. The room was spacious and romantic. One of my favorite things about the Lodge was the innumerable intimate garden nooks?each showing the gardener's passion for flowers. I felt like I was on a tropical island. Laurie graciously escorted us to our room and made sure we knew how to use the fireplace and other amenities.

Trevor suggested a wonderful restaurant. I had read others reviews about noise from a bar and train. We sleep with windows wide open, and heard some bar noise, but it was happy noise, and it died down early. As for the trains, well, we are romantics, and they evoked dreams of exotic trips like the Orient Express, Istanbul..... trains, oceans, We slept so well. The brunch the next morning was marvelous. There was lot of fresh fruit, coffee, muffins, Danish..which was enhanced by sitting outside in the gorgeous setting. We hope we can return before another anniversary

What a wonderful escape from reality!

Cardiff's wonderful rooftop fireplace sunsets were amazing. We enjoyed a glass of wine, sheltered from pedestrian cares, and watched the sun set with a panoramic view over the ocean. The staff, Laurie and Trevor, made us feel free from the working world, suggested great restaurants, and gave us great suggestions for things to do.

The breakfast was fantastic, from the fresh fruit and pastries to the intimate garden setting. So many romantic sitting areas..one could hide away, or make new friends.

we would come back in a heartbeat!

I was utterly disgusted with this lodge - overall it was a really bad experience for me and my boyfriend. I have never experienced such conditions in any hotel and do not wish to repeat it. Insects, hair on the floor in the bathroom, burned out lightbulbs and a "manager" with an attitude. Add to that a biker bar next door going until 3:00 a.m. NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE!

My girlfiend spotted a flyer about CBTSL, and looked it up on the internet. The photos on the website looked promising and she was looking for something special for our 1st anniversary. She booked a visit a month in advance.

The room was lovely, even though a train would come by at least 15 times a day and during the night, blowing a very LOUD horn as it neared our location. The bar next door was also very loud with people laughing and talking all night, Harley's blasting by, etc.

A window shade broke as I was opening the blinds, crashing down and nearly splitting my skull. Then one of the sinks didn't work and water was shut off without notice or a note. When it did come back pressure was very low, and the faucet spewed out black gunk all over my toothbrush. Finally the AC condensation soaked the countertop where all my receipts were, rendering them illegible. In the process my laptop's power cord was soaked as well, which I tried when I got home and it fried my laptop.

During check out, we tried to explain all these things to Trevor, the owner's son. He didn't address the soaked power cord. When I showed him the soaked and blurry receipts, he just smiled. He said we must've left the windows open, which would've caused condensation. We did no such thing. When we said the water had been cut off and the sink didn't work, he said he knew but no note was left for us when we arrived. Similarly, no note had been attaced to the blinds, warning us not to touch them, even though he said "the parts have been on order for a month." The parts are 2 end brackets that could be picked up at Home Depot for under $4.

Worst of all, Trevor was hostile during the entire check out process. He was incredibly argumentative, never once apologizing about a thing. He even accused us of "nitpicking" and called us "low class," which infuriated both of us.

Our recommendation: Don't go there unless you want to be treated like dirt.

I spent a week at Cardiff by the Sea Lodge while on vacation. Parking is in a tiny underground area with very small places or street side. That's the only negative thing I can think about. The rooms are lovely with beautiful furnishings. Some have ocean views. But if you go to the top where the spa is, there are tables and the best ocean view around.

We love this lodge. It's not your run of the mill motel, but an artsy relaxing type of place to stay. It is older so expect that. It seems to have been around for decades, but we love the ambiance. It is at the ocean so that is where you spend your time anyway. The rooms are ok, and it just feels a beachy type lodge.

My husband and I chose to stay at this hotel for our honeymoon, not knowing anything about San Diego or its outlaying areas and were very impressed. We chose a less expensive room but were generously upgraded when we arrived, being allowed to choose from a variety of rooms. We chose to stay in the Country French room. I loved how I could sit in the tub and see the fire (which was daily stocked with wood) , it was just the relaxation that I needed after the stresses of wedding planning! The staff was friendly and even went to extent of having the places that we wanted to visit mapped out for us when we came down to breakfast the next day. If you are looking for a place that is sterile and uniform, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a place where you can let your hair down and just enjoy yourself, I would recommend checking this lodge out. My husband and I would definitely return!

When I got married, I didn't have much time or money to run off anywhere super expensive, so a coworker suggested the honeymoon suite. The website showed an immaculate room and seemed reasonable at $170/night. Upon our arrival, we were horrified at its condition. Apparently they never maintained the place since my friend had stayed there 20 years earlier; everything was run down. There were flies buzzing around and we could hear the phone ringing and the manager talking in the lobby beneath us. Unable to handle it, we immediately left, highly unsatisfied. However, we did manage to get a full refund. Thankfully we were able to find a suite in La Jolla that turned out to be cheaper and much better!

This place was a comedy of errors. The futon bed I slept on had broken legs. The panel doors to the bathroom were broken. The shower curtain was a loose-knit cotton that didn't prevent the bathroom floor from getting soaked. The towel rack fell off the wall when brushed against. The electrical outlets are wired so that half the room only works when that halfs lights are on. And speaking of lights, the overhead lights outside kept us awake most of the night with only a thin blind to cover the window.

The manager didnt want to listen to my maintenance issues. He became defensive and argued with me about them! When I requested a discount, he scoffed, saying that clients usually come with a list of complaints and then ask for a discount!

This dreadful experience at Cardiff by the Sea Lodge put a damper on our holiday.

Cardiff by the Sea is a B&B, but I thought it was just a malnourished motel. I was very disappointed with this my first bed & breakfast experience. The rooms are supposed to be thematic. I dont know what that means because all our French Garden had was a flowery bedspread and patio chairs. It was advertised to have a whirlpool tub fit for two, but I dont know how small youd have to be to fit two people in it, when it wasnt even spacious enough for one petite person. Basically, it was a regular bathtub. The continental breakfast is set up like a buffet of bagels, muffins, and coffee in the courtyard. Its available for about two hours early in the morning.
There was no view out of our window, but there are a couple of pretty locations on the premises.
To those interested, there are no smoking rooms.
