A friend and I went to Puttanesca some months ago at the suggestion of a coworker of mine who absolutely RAVED about this place. Well, forewarned is forearmed, as they say. The place wasn't packed for a Friday evening, and we were seated

This place is ok not horrible but not great. I heard about this place from a friend who gave it a little better of a review which made me want to give it a try. All around I say the place is ok but I'm heading back there anytime soon.

NO WARM Greetings to welcome customers FOOD is good for the price. I love Sauted Mediterranean striped bass here; excellent. Other dishes are not bad either compared to other Italian restaurants for the price. SERVICE is slow and not friendly, so be careful if a show is waiting for you. You will get so frustrated that you cannot enjoy the show fully. AMBIANCE is nice; noisy but has a calm tone to it and it looks like you can reserve one room for a party. But regular TABLEs are so TINY that feel very uncomfortable. So, I would not go there to enjoy a nice dinner, but I go there for a quick dinner before the show. (allow at least hour and half before the show though)I will go there again not expecting to relax or to enjoy the dinner, but having the stripe bass before the show.

Nothing is really special about Puttanesca. The service is terrible, music way too loud and you're greeted by trashy looking scantily clad hostesses. To make matters worse waiters never seem to get your orders right. Only pro is that the place is reasonably priced. Avoid if you can.

Awful service!

After staring at us when she found out we didn't have reservations, as if we had done something wrong...the hostess spent spent five minutes deciding where to seat us. Mind you, there were about 6 empty tables. Food was mediocre, nothing special at all. Overpriced. The waiter made us wait 15 minutes before he came over to introduce himself. Food took way too long to come out. And we had to wait almost 20 minutes to find the waiter again and ask for the check.

There are plenty of other great Italian places on 9th...stay away from this place!

Worst food experience that I have had in the city since I've been here. Ordered two dishes for delivery that were both supposed to have wild mushrooms as the main ingredients. Both came with nothing but noodles with cheap canned mushrooms...the supposed "stuffed ravioli" came as noodles...delivery guy was a moron....not to mention it was way overpriced. Ugh...

For years, this was the reliable, inexpensive neighborhood Italian standby. Then came the renovation, complete with speakers blasting the most execrable, inappropriate music (think Beach Boys) loud, Loud, LOUD.

Attitude if you politely ask it be turned down. The staff rotates nightly. You can be a regular and not be seated by the same person twice in a week. You can be a regular and never once - ever - be recognized by the staff.

Food's still good, but after years of faithful patronage, it's off the list with a vengeance.

I can't accurately express how much I disliked this restaurant. The service was completely horrible. Not just slow. Not just bad. But slow, bad and RUDE. Had the food been better and the atmosphere more enjoyable, I might have given the place a pass on the terrible service, chalking it up to a bad night. But reading over the comments here on Citysearch, I see I'm not alone and my experience wasn't uncommon. Many, many others have clearly experienced the same at Puttanesca. So, the bottom line here: Awful service. Inexcusable attitude. Lousy atmosphere. Mediocre food. Awful service. Awful service. Awful service.

I just enjoyed an *excellent* 6pm Sunday dinner with six friends here. We've dined at Puttanesca several times over the past 2 years and have consistently gotten reliable service and the food is always satisfying. We ordered 5 different entrees tonight, all of which looked appetizing and tasted even better. It certainly can get noisy during the dinner rush and they unfortunately had difficulties with air conditioning on this hot, summer night, but the quality and freshness of their menu will keep me coming back.

While Puttanesca isn't as fancy as some other eateries in Manhattan, it is basic Italian that is tasty and also reasonable in price. I always get the Penne ala vodka and it satisfies me every time. The service is prompt and attentive. I have brought many picky eaters here and have never had a problem.

I have a visceral reaction to this Puttanesca place. Merely walking by it makes me ill and reminds me of one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The surly service was absolutely horrible. Clearly, though, the management couldn't have cared less that we waited for a long time (with a reservation) before being seated, waited even longer for a waiter to pay attention to us, and even longer still for our food (which was far from special).

This restaurant is incredibly noisy, the service is slow, and the food mediocre. I remember when this restaurant opened as a small storefront --- it had about 10 tables in a narrow room. Then, the food was really good. After they expanded, the food is not much better than what you would get at a college dorm cafeteria at much higher prices

I took my family (8 of us) to Puttanesca for brunch on Mother's day and had no reservations. The place was very busy, as usual I learned, and I was afraid of not beeing able to ge a table. Without wanting to turn us away, they offered to arrange a table for us wihin ten mintes. But within minutes the manager, who was very kind and polite, informed us that our table was finally ready. So we sat down to enjoy our meal. We were very pleased that they could accomadate such a large number. We were also happy with the food selection and the prices that went with them! We will definitely be back, but with reservaions next time! Overall, good atmosphere and nice crew!

I went to Puttanesca with a former boyfriend last year. The incident within that food establishment has left such an unsavory memory that I am now, after such a lapse in time, still fuming.
We went after a performance, still early enough to be seated in the "lobby" section of the place. Not the best seats in the house - near the entrance and in direct line of busy diners coming & going.
We had our entrees, my bf had a soda and I had 2 wines (I think) and then lingered over a few sips of water for just several minutes, discussing the events of the day - check already paid, when all of a sudden the very brazen maitre'd came over and stated: "I don't want to be rude, but I am going to have to ask you to leave since we need this table" - Can you imagine???!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never before had I received such a rude comment from anyone in a dining establishment. I didn't say anything nor did my bf. However, after removing the tip from the table i asked the waiter where the manager was and he stated that it was the same man who requested that we leave. I approached him saying that what had just occured was highly boorish and I had never encountered such behavior before in a restaurant. He then became nasty with me, saying something like "too bad" -
Such obnoxiousnous. One of the worst restaurants ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, and when my bf asked about the etymology of the name of the restaurant as we entered, he made a snide remark about how it applied to his waitresses! From the beginning he was an obnoxious pig!

My boyfriend and I went here a few weeks ago and I can honestly say it was hands down the worst meal I have ever had in NYC. I ordered the penne a la vodka, something you would think would be pretty standard at an Italian place, and it was horrid. The "grilled" chicken was diced (who dices chicken when you aren't at a salad bar?) and tasted and had the texture of chicken that had been cooked that morning and had been sitting out since. The actual sauce was bland, and while some of the pasta was chewy, other pieces were hard and stuck together as if my meal had been prepared for someone else 45 minutes ago. While my boyfriend's calamari fa diablo was not much better, at least it was hot. The place was packed... go figure.

Absolutely horrendous!! Besides waiting 20 minutes to sit when there was clearly plenty of tables available, the food was just garbage. The cold antipasto was a plate of cold cuts, the mussels in white wine tasted of sea salt. Yuck! My wife ordered a simple dish, penne a la vodka, it was consumed by the asparagus that was added to it and un-edible. My mushroom stuffed ravioli was clearly pre- made at some restaurant factory, was tuff, and looked like it came out of a chef-boy-ardee can. (i think the chef-boy-ar-dee would have been better) Stay far away, how it's been in business so long is a real mind blower.

My friends and I were just trying to have a good Friday evening. Choosing this restaurant turned out to be the worst choice that night!!!!!!! The service was just HORRIBLE!!!!!! Not only we waited for 20 mintues to get seated, while we waited for the table to be open, the waiters were so RUDE and had some attitude. There is no excuse for such service!!!!!! On our way out, one of the waiter almost bumped into my friend, oh yes of course, she did not even apologize and just gave a look!!!! AWEFUL experience!!!!!!

I have never encountered such terrible service as I have at this restaurant. The restaurant was crowded, so my friend and I were anticipating a good time. Boy, were we wrong! Not only did we wait over 20 minutes for a menu, but after the menus arrived, we had to wait another 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order. To make matters worse, our waiter forgot to put our order in the system and we didn't get our food for another 45 minutes! When I called the manager over for an explanation, he was not only unapologetic, but had a nasty attitude and blamed the busy atmosphere as a reason for our poor service. He didn't seem to care one bit when I told him that he had lost me as a customer. What kind of service is that?!

Trying to be adventurous, we walked in for dinner on a pleasant summer night. We were in a good mood and looking forward to a nice meal. What a disappointment. The food was heavy and more does not mean better. The appetizers were huge, and so were the entrees. But the food lacked focus, freshness and refinement. The service, what service? was non-existant. The only nice thing was the wine we selected. They do have a nice selection of reasonably priced Italian wines.

Aside from the very rude booker I was forced to deal with for my large-party reservation, Puttanesca, which seems to be a popular destination for large birthday parties (I counted 6 others the night we were there), was a pleasant surprise. It could have been that they were super-attentive to us as an apology for the blunder caused by their booker! But actually, the food was pretty good. Huge appetizer portions - easily share-able for a party of 4-6 - and very tasty (calamari, tonno battuto (pounded raw tuna - delish), spiedino alla romana, carpaccio di manzo). The insalata della casa was delicious and enough for 4! For my main course, I had the venison with homemade (in house, they told us) pappardelle. The pasta was a bit undercooked and a little chewy, but the venison was rich and not gamey. Others in my party ordered the paglia e fieno, tortellini della nonna, pollo ai ferri, saltimbocca alla romana (my favorite!!) and the branzino marachiaro - all were proclaimed "delicious". We had a party of 14 and the service was excellent. This is a great deal for the price! Nice atmosphere/decor, but a little noisy due to the size of the dining area. I will try it again with a smaller party.

I recently dined at Puttanesca for the first and last time with a group of friends for a birthday dinner. The place seemed nice enough, and the menu sure seemed reasonable enough, with most entrees and pasta dishes ranging from $12 - 14 (some of the meats were a bit more). I decided to order the night's special, a risotto made with shrimp. Perhaps it is my fault for not explicitly asking the price of this item, however in my past experience at NYC restaurants specials are--at most--five or so dollars above and beyond the range of regular menu options. Much to my surprise, however, this risotto came in at $25, a whopping two times the average menu item! I wouldn't even have minded, had it been a top-notch risotto, but I have had much better quality risotto elsewhere in the city at that price or less.

Additionally, the staff abruptly gave our party our check, without offering coffee or dessert--apparently they needed the table for other guests and so we were not given the option to try their "critically-acclaimed" dolci. I've dined at fine Italian restaurants from Mulberry Street to Rome, Italy, and never in my life has an "authentic" Italian restaurant rushed me through my meal. Puttanesca may have the name and the accent, but it lacks the warmth and friendliness of a real Italian dining experience.

I recently ate here for a birthday dinner in a group of ten. Although the menu is creative and the food is good for the price, I have never before been treated so rudely by a restaurant staff. We arrived for our dinner at 7pm and we practically being shoved out the door by 9. I actually had a ravioli on my fork en route to my mouth when the server asked me if I was finished. We were not asked if we wanted coffee or dessert, though an un-requested birthday tiramisu was brought to the table, for which we were actually charged on the bill. But the most unbelievable part: as soon as we paid the bill, the waiter took it from the table and not moments later returned and said, "Can we get you anything else?" I said "no" since we had already paid the bill and dessert was obviously not an option, and he said, "Well if you can move it along then, we really need this table." Of course I can understand if a group of ten stays at a table for 3 + hours on a Saturday night during the main seating, it can be a bit annoying to the management. But it was shocking that we were only welcome to stay 2 hours and then we got the boot.

I ignored all the "horrible service!" warnings and decided to plan a dinner here for six or so friends because it was in a location convenient to all of us. Besides, how bad could the service really be? Really bad, I soon learned. It put a damper on the entire meal - we were constantly attempting to flag down our aloof waiter who seemed more interested in hanging out with the other servers than filling our water glasses, bringing us bread or taking our orders. We were so annoyed at having been treated like nuisances rather than customers that we could barely enjoy our meals (the food was decent, but not worth it). It's really sad that a place with so much promise (great location, nice space, good portions & food) suffers so much from hiring quite possibly the rudest staff in the city. There are so many other great Italian restaurants to choose from, where you won't be treated poorly. I, clearly, won't be back.

Love this place. the food is delish..and the wine is even better! The ambience is relaxing yet fun and I rave about this place to everyone. The first time I went was for my friends Bachelorette party (pre festivities) and we reserved the private room. I truly recommend Puttanesca for a romantic meal as well as good food and spirits with a group of friends! ENJOY!

i've had a party couple weeks ago for the second time for my birthday with the same waiter/maybe manager we had the best time ever very professional people best place for parties with the right waiter thank u shorty waiter:)

.

There are some dishes that they pull off well (lamb shanks) -- and some that were just terrible. My dining partner's chicken was dessicated, slightly burnt, undersalted and tasteless. He ended up eating about half of my lamb. Roasted beet salad was so-so. My glass of super Tuscan was pretty good; his glass of chianti was uninteresting. Dessert did sweeten the mood: the mousse was very rich and quite good. So the verdict? Mixed. Based on the dishes I ordered, I would recommend the restaurant. Based on my partner's food, I would warn folks to stay away. It's very much your luck of the draw, it seems.

Service was sweet if a little slow at times, though this not at all the staff's fault. They are spread very thin and I suspect somewhat mistreated. Seating arrangements are tight.

Pros: Good lamb, some good wines, good mousse

Cons: terrible chicken, variable service, elbow 2 elbow seating

I am amazed by the poor reviews- I find this place to be standout Italian in an area flooded with Italian- great prices, great atmosphere, good service and a wonderful wine list. The service does sometimes lack focus and it is not ideal if you are in a hurry but I have never been treated rudely. There are a few Italian employees who may not speak the best English but for me that adds to the experience. We had a 3 hour brunch- they definitely do not rush you- and they kept the unlimited mimosas flowing the whole time.

The dinner menu is diverse and top-notch as well. I go at least 3 times a month and have never been disappointed.

i can't beleive the quality of food given for such great prices. large room plus two smaller rooms to accomodate pre-theater and late night dinners. i've actually seen a few movie stars dinning at this restaurant such as christian stater.

Our tiny table for two (dinner plates hung over edge) was right in the middle of one of the lanes of waiter traffic. I was back-to-back with the diner at the table behind me and wait staff had to hoist trays over our heads as they squeezed past us again and again. We were told that they were booked solid and no other table was available. I asked for seltzer with lime, no ice. Got club soda, filled with ice, no lime. Food was average and creme brulee was awful - the sugar was charred, not caramelized and smelled of kerosene. To my right, the hostess stood over a busboy and hissed "rapido, rapido" as he tried to clear and re-set a table for six. Terrible experience.

I was there on sat. for my birthday and we had an excellent time. I had the best ravioli ever. The wine & the service was very good too. Moderate prices. A little noise but I think that was because of our party!

I had my reservation for my wedding rehearsal dinner for 40 people. A friend of mine had recommended this location for a private party and said the food was decent and price was competitive. When I called to confirm, they were rude and condescending - I can live with that. But the arrogant and unprofessionial "manager" told me I had misunderstood all conversations and that my room was booked to someone else. You can imagine the planning that goes into these types of evenings. I could understand an apology or a goof on their part - but they tried to turn it around like I had never made a reservation. The party planner (who works from his cell phone) never returns calls - and is never patient enough on the phone - "just fax it" is his favorite term. BE WARNED!! Rude and a bunch of amateures!

Went here on a friend's reccomendation. Enjoyed a very nice Caesar Salad while my wife had arugula and goat cheese....both very tasty. We both opted for a pasta dish and they were served timely and fresh. We concluded with tiramisu & chocolate cake, both were delicious. We'd go back again

I've been here once a couple of years ago and decided to try it again because everywhere else was packed. The food was so so a couple of years ago and it has gotten worse! Not only was the service terrible, the food was horrible. We got baked clams for an appetizer which I don't even think had any clams in it. The meal was horrible. My ginger ale was practically all ice. People at the next table were complaining how horrible their house wine was. I would NEVER go back.

Went here last night and enjoyed a wonderful dinner outside. I don't understand the other negative reviews of the service because we had amazing waiter. He described the specials in great detail and gave wine and appertizer suggestions. When I clumsely spilt my boyfriend's wine, another glass came right away on the house. The food was simple and good.

Pros: Food, Service, Prices

I have eaten here several times now, and have regularly been impressed with the food, especially the pasta dishes. We did not have any problems with the service when we ate in, although we were there when it was not particularly busy. On weekend evenings, it is packed and I would imagine that the staff might be a little haggard. When one compares the quality of the food to some of the city's other italian restaurants, and then particularly when one factors in the very reasonable prices here, I feel that this restaurant comes out a winner. Perhaps the only negative thing that could be said is that, based on the other reviews, the service here is inconsistent.

I live just around the corner from here and dine here frequently. I think this place is great! Excellent food (try the homemade pasta), friendly helpful attentive staff and reasonable prices. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Pros: Great Food, Extensive Menu, Ambiance

Cons: , Too Many Specials

.

The food here is above average and enjoyable, but it is nothing special to travel any great distance for. If you are in the area for some reason, and want to stop at a decent Italian restaurant, give it a try. You won't regret it, but you won't be amazed and eager to return either.

I suggest going somewhere else for a good meal, and there is certainly no shortage of restaurants in the area to serve as alternatives. I certainly don't regret my visit, and I did enjoy my food, but with many better competitors in Italian cuisine in New York City, I don't plan to come back.

An unfriendly hostess greeted us and placed us in the main room of the restaurant where the tables were so close together that it was impossible for guests and waiter to move without bumping you. It took 2 requests to be moved by the even more unfriendly hostess. The food and service was average. I would not return.

Came highly recommended from a native New Yorker...we're so glad that we went! Very good food, nice staff, beautifully simple and elegant decor, and wonderful dining experience.

We went at lunch and loved it-

Overall, an excellent Italian restaurant that is not too expensive!

This is the sister restaurant of Mario Pia up near the theatre district and it's almost exactly the same.

Decor is simple yet functional and although the staff are not the most attentive in the world, you don't feel rushed and the food is good, hot with decent portion sizes and a good selection to suit most tastes. They even managed to do take out too.

Find a 'Where' or 'In' magazine and cut out the coupon for a free bottle of wine - makes for a very cheap meal out.

See, I usually don't pay much attention when people say the waitstaff are obnoxious and whatnot, but this time they are right. The food here, undeniably, is amazing for the west side. The goat cheese and sun dried tomato ravioli is great, the bread may be a little weak, but the calamari is nice. However, the people working at this restaurant seem to hate themselves and the diners as well. I asked for a coke, like a soda, and it took my waitress five minutes to understand what the hell I was talking about. She was actually angry with me or something, I never said anything to her, I said please and stuff, but she was off the bat completely rude. Same thing with the other people that brought me stuff. Great food, but try to ignore the people working there, because they are going to ignore you.

WIthout doubt, the worst service I have ever experienced. Our waitress had no clue about the menu and (after we had ordered a bottle of wine) told us the kitchen was closing and stood guard until we ordered. Our tepid appetizers arrived faster than a Big Mac and our main course before we had half finished our apps. Then the staff began to drag tables around the floor, slam the shutters next to our window and place every chair on the tables around us. Then followed a long staring match by the entire staff (who had largely changed from their uniforms) until one employee apologized for the 'rushed' treatment. The manager refused to speak to us and, needless to say, we were not offered dessert or coffee, just the bill. A terrible restaurant - go anywhere else.

Puttanesca is one of the best italian retaurants in nyc. We have been eating i n nyc for 49 yrs and finding this food and service is like a gift. Most restaurants in nyc are just ok and expensive. But Puttanesca has food that is so good you can;t stop thinking about when your going back. The prices are so inexpensive I wonder how they make money. The ambience is like sitting in a painting of beauty, such artistic design like a David Hockney painting. The service is so polite. Very noisy because it is so crowded. But you get use to the crowds because your having so much fun. I strongly urge reservations. So hurry you wont be sorry. Try the blk fettucine with the lobster or the cioppino. You will love it.

I never write reviews, but I consider this one to be a public-service. The host was rude. Yes, there are many waiters per customer, but what does it matter when they give you attitude every time you ask for something? The fresh mozzerella appetizer had to be the runniest mozz I have ever had, and the accompanying tomato was so over-salted I could barely eat it. I ordered the pepper-encrusted tuna. He said they didn't have tuna, so I ordered the blackened sea bass. I received the tuna. Or should I say slight-tuna-filled-pepper. It was so overseasoned (as was the salad beneath it) that I had to stop halfway through the entree just to blow my nose.

To top it all off, this place takes only AmEx, and they snicker when they have to inform you of that fact.

Try any of the 3 other Italian places on this corner.

Loving Patsy's down the block, but not loving the prices, decided to saunter over to 56th/9th- 3 Italian restaurants at the intersection. Could not believe two were empty (Saturday night at 6:30) Puttanesca was packed. My PO5 was seated promtly (w/o reservation) and treated to an amazing dinner. There is no waiting area, so we had a crowd hovering over our table, this is just testament to how many people want to eat there. Fresh pasta was a little too soft- not unexpected on a weekend evening rush, the standard pasta was perfect. What I liked the most is that the staff listened attentively to what I asked for and my meal was prepared EXACTLY the way I asked, what a treat. My last suprise was the bill, 5people, 4apps, 6entrees(3 specials) +wine and it came out to less than $150!!!! Now I know why the other restaurants were empty.

This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Do not eat at this restaurant. We did not receive what we ordered, the food was cold, and the manager was extremely rude and arrogant. He did not even know his own menu, nor the prices of his food, and had the audacity to ask what my problem was when the check was wrong.

I was suprised to read the disfavorable review left about Puttanesca. I highly reccomend visiting and seeing for yourself!

If there were no seats at any other location in midtown, then this will do as a last resort. Don't be fooled by the crowded dining room. The room is filled with out-of-towners who would likely not return. The man alleging to be the owner couldn't be more rude or disinterested in your dining experience. Save yourself the frustration and dine across the street!
