This place is a lot of fun. The atmosphere is very enjoyable and there has been great live music every time I have been there. The only weak spot if there is one is the food. It's good but not great.

Great atmosphere and great drinks! They sell cigars that are hand-rolled right in front of you. I would definitely recommend this place. Here's a coupon that I found for a free mojito:

I was invited to an early dinner meeting at Guantanamera, they had reserved a table downtairs for more privacy. The food was great, the price very reasonable. As we were leaving we went by the bar, the band was incredible, my partner and I decided to stay, we ordered some mojitos, excellent. We had so much fun we lost track of time. It was the perfect way to celebrate a fruitfull business deal..

I live very close to Guantanamera and have been there numerous times. I love this place, but you have to be in the right mood for what it is has to offer. It offers a lot - really good (but not great) cuban food, the service excellent (very fast and attentive in my experience), a really cool ambience with all kinds of people (businessmen, families, locals, all very cool and friendly), and EXCELLENT live cuban music. The music is kind of loud (depending on the specific line-up that night), so it is not a good place for a quiet dinner (although the band does take 15-20 minute breaks every 45 minutes or so). You can request, as we always do, to not sit right by the band, in which case reservations are recommended. But if you looking for a fun, laidback time with some great live music, check this place out.

This is a great restaurant. The food was delicious. They offered the classic Spanish dishes. I love the fact that they offered a variety of South American beer there. They had Brazilian, Argentinian, the list goes on. The atmosphere is chill, even if you just want to relax at the bar, you can. I highly recommend this spot.

If you don't mind eating without talking this is a good place, especially when they have live music (and you may end up being seated right next to the band, as it happened to us!). But the food is in fact worth it, especially the chevize. Less noise in the bar area, and you can sit there while watching the cigar rolling by the door.

They've got great mojitos but i'm gonna have to agree with the last review......their manager looks like an action figure (short ) and always has a long face.......you'd figure with the kind of vibe and crowd they have all employees should put on a smile...especially the management!

"food very mediocre and over-priced."

We had reservations for a birthday party. The short guy who acted as
manager, also claimed he was the owner (although this is very doubtful), was extremely rude. Kept us waiting over an hour after our reservation time, and instead of being apologetic was nasty. He insulted the birthday boy who is one of the nicest people in the world.

The manager couldn't possibly be the owner as he lost 20 potential future customers.-------

There are so many excellent cuban and spanish restaurants in NYC, don't waste your time or money on this one.

Pros: cuban music is good but overshadowed by poor management

Cons: extremely loud small space, you need to scream to talk to anyone

The good news is: the food is tasty and exactly what me and a few friends wanted for Saturday night. The bad news is: everything else. Apparently if you're foreign u can?t drink here. I was in the mood to have a drink with my dinner so I ordered my usual at a cuban spot, a MOJITO. I do look young so I had my ID in hand when the waiter came over. He saw my ID and said "THIS IS FAKE, THAT?S NOT YOU." The waiter didn?t even bother asking for additional ID, he was convinced it was fake. I have a foreign ID, which I think that?s the reason he didn?t acknowledge it, but last time I checked that wasn?t something bizarre or unusual, especially in New York City. Like 20 minutes later, after being stared down by the rest of the waiters, he comes back and says ?Let me see your ID again? At this point I felt so discriminated and appalled, I told him to forget it. Obviously this waiter was completely clueless to the fact that New York is very touristic and that many people from different countries live here. Next time, I?ll just stick to places I?ve never had problems drinking at before...like the other 10 million restaurants and bars in NYC.

just go ahead and try it. At the start i was very sceptic because I booked a party for 20 people for the first time in a cuban restaurant. Came out to be great. The food delicious even that we had a price fix menu the selection was at is best , from family style apps - empanadas, croquets, and salad- to the main course - the skrirt steak, lechon, and the tilapia,-and to the the tray of tres leches for my parents bday. The service Top-Noch. For a party that large the server did an amazing job on ordering drinks and serving food. I am writing this review cause was my best experience ever. Don't hasitate to try cuban they have great food.My father and mother were so happy and I was too. Graet food cannot be enjoyed without great service. Thanks to Tony my party went great . Great place ans as I promised it was my first but it WILL NOT be my last

I went to Guantanamera with three of my girlfriends before theater. We got seated at a table and the waiter came and greated us right away. Ask for our drinks and brought them. All of us got what the waiter recoomended because was our first time in a cuban restaurant. The food was great and the service was at the same level too. We ask for dessert lists when we were eating our appetizers because we were thinking that we are going to be late for our show but the waiter assured us that we had enough time and he was right. The atmosphere was great and the waiter ( I think his name was Tony )introduced us with his busboy and than with the manager. The recoomendations were great my lechon suckling for real and the tres leche was superb. All of us were very happy. we will be back soon for more jokes and more happy times and good food.

Found this place on opentable it's a midtown west keeper and find. Though we were not there during live music, which would've been nice, but the ambiance was felt with the overall design. Fantastic menu, very versatile tastes and authentic servings of both surf and turf. Have the Cuban tamales and have many, one of the best ever. The traditional Cuban dessert is also great, as is the banana bread pudding. Sangria is great, as are the cocktails (next time). Overall our party of 3 foodies was impressed and satisfied, the soul was felt on the plate.

I picked this place on a whim from opentable dot com (great website), and I was very impressed! The restaurant has two floors, both small but cozy. Downstairs is mainly used for private parties, or if you request a more quiet table. The service was fast and friendly, though at times I did feel a little rushed. The only downside to the service was that some of the staff was not as knowledgeable about the menu as I had hoped. I had asked about something on the menu and the answer I was given did not help very much. As to the food, I eat Spanish/Caribbean food often, and this was excellent! The Ceviche Mixta was excellent, as was my entree (a chicken dish, but the name escapes me). The coffee was STRONG and the Mojitos are to die for! They have 6 or 7 different flavors and they are each made when you order, not from a mix. They have live music most nights and they have a guy in the front window who hand rolls cigars for customers! Great place, I would definitely go back!

After seeing Beyonce at the Garden we wanted a late night snack. We always planned on eating at Guantanamera and we were sorry that we weren't that hungry. The band was so good that we wondered why they didn't have a "real" gig. Hubby had the pinchos were were moist and I had the pina and agucate salad with grilled chicken. The salad wasn't wilted, the pineapple fresh (not canned) and the chicken warm. Based on our short visit we will definitely be back!

I celebrated my birthday at this cuban place and my friends and me are going back. It was really a wonderful dining experience with excellent food, great mojitos (really nice and strong), live music, we danced and danced, great service, our waiter Herman was great. We all enjoyed that night at Guantanamera, so if you want to eat, drink and have fun you must go to this cuban gem, but book before friday for the weekend.

I HAVE BEEN TO MANY CUBAN PLACES BEFORE AND NEVER HAVE I SEEN YET WHAT HAPPENS AT GUANTANAMERA... THE FOOD IS GREAT EVERYTHING ON THE MENU HAS AN AUTHENTIC FLAVOR, THE DRINKS ARE WONDERFUL, THE MUSIC IS PERFECT. THE NICEST THING ABOUT THIS PLACE IS EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!... THE FOOD, THE FEELING OF HAVANA AND THE NICE STAFF. WE CELEBRATED MY FRIENDS GRADUATION DINNER PARTY AND STAFF INCLUDING THE OWNER MADE US FEEL SPECIAL AND GAVE US THE BEST TABLE AND WERE VERY ATTENTIVE TO OUR NEEDS. THE STAFF IS HAPPY AND SEEING THE OWNER GOING AROUND TO EACH TABLE TO INSURE THAT EVERYONE DINNING WAS HAVING A GOOD TIME IS SOMETHING YOU JUST DON'T SEE ANY MORE, AT LEAST NOT IN NEW YORK CITY.

SO IF YOU WANT A PLACE TO HAVE A PRIVATE PARTY THEY HAVE A DOWNSTAIRS AREA THAT IS PERFECT. I PLAN TO GO BACK AND IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A HOT SPOT WHERE YOU CAN HAVE GREAT CUBAN FOOD, MUSIC AND ENERGY... GUANTANAMERA IS THE PLACE TO GO... TAKE MY WORD FOR IT CHECK IT OUT!!!!

After having a fun birthday party here last year I decided to go for a repeat - what a difference a year makes! They gave me a hard time about seating me and my friends because the "whole party" wasn't there. I convinced them to let us sit down - the restaurant was not close to being full, so there was no point in that. And that birthday cake with sparklers and restaurant sing-along mentioned above? Didn't happen. Finally, they ruined this place for me FOREVER later on when the manager told us that they had already "allowed" us to stay past our 2 hour limit and it was time to go...although they had just brought several new drinks to our table, and one person was in the process of ordering more food. Our poor waitress and bartender were appalled and apologetic. But quite frankly I am completely soured on this place; it seems their success has gone to their heads and they consider this disgusting behavior an acceptable business practice. That's too bad, because I have sent many friends and coworkers there, but after hearing about my birthday debacle NONE of us will be back. Sure, the food and drinks are good - but they are not "la ultima coca-cola del desierto" and there are plenty of other great Cuban restaurants in this city that have excellent service as well.

Let me tell you, I have eaten a lot of Cuban food in my time and this has to be some of the very best Cuban food I have ever had. My husband is Cuban and very critical and he loved it too! The ambiance is very nice, the wait staff is top notch and the owner even came over and introduced himself and asked how everything was. The service is amazing - our waitress was so very friendly and attentive. And it wasn't just her - when I went to leave a gentleman came over and helped me put my coat on - wow. My husband and I eat out a lot and this was really an exceptional experience. I had one of the best French Martinis that I have ever had (I even ordered 2 because they were so good). We had the empanada appetizer which was extremely flavorful and came with this excellent garlic sauce. We tried one chicken and one beef and they were both wonderful. I had the steak with garlic, onion and green peppers which was delicious. Not a lot of fat and cooked and seasoned just right. It comes with an amazing Cuban fried rice that was SO good. My husband had the fried pork chunks which he said were the best he ever had because they were bite size and just perfect. It was so much food that we were too full for dessert. I have told several people already about this place and we had just been there last night. I highly recommend it. Go, enjoy some really good food, great staff and a wonderful atmosphere.

This place has AWESOME food. I don't know what some of the other people are talking about but I came here on Friday night with a group of 14 people and everyone, and I mean everyone, enjoyed the food and the drinks. I had the salmon, my husband had the ground beef dish.. others enjoyed the calamari, shrimp, etc. Everything was good and well seasoned. The prices are reasonable also. They had a live band but unfortunately, the band only played a couple of songs and then I don't know what happened, they just disappeared. They were great though and had the whole place jammin. The place is loud -- great for a lively bunch of people who want to have a good time. Would not recommend for couples or those that like quiet places, at least not on a Friday or a Saturday night. Go and enjoy and have a mojito, they are awesome! After we finished here, we went up the block to Providence and danced the night away!

Went there last Friday night with a group of 18 people, I expected so much of this place and could not wait to eat there. What a mistake was to go there, the food was horrible, it had absolutely no flavor, it was impossible to get our waiter over and the music was too loud. The worst part of the evening was the huge projector that was in the back of the restaraunt, we were right underneath it and every time we looked up that was all we saw. I will never go back there and will tell everyone I know no to.

Dined here for a group lunch with coworkers. Drinks were great - loved my caipirinha! The arroz con pollo was good, not great (one coworker got the paella and couldn't stop raving, I'll get that next time). However service was quite slow for a lunch hour. Happily, this place delivers so I sometimes order this for a not-cheap/midpriced treat. The empanadas and ceviche are excellent!

If you don't mind it being loud, you will luv it!!! I went there Sat. night with a group of 6 & we had a great time! We had reservations & when we got there we did not like where they were going to sit. We told the Host & in 10 min new seats. Once we sat down the waiter came right away to take our drink & appetizer order. We did have to ask for them to bring bread. The live Cuban band really can play those tamboras!!! The Sangria and mojitos are excellent! Some of the dishes we ordered was Seafood Paella, the Filet Mignon cut into a butterfly & grilled chicken all of it was UMM UMM good.

Overall I will def. come back! If I would change anything it would be for them to make a small dance area for people to dance.

Pros: Live Band, Good Sangria, Dim Setting

Cons: Have to ask for bread, No dance area

.

I went with a friend for some after work drinks and we ended up ordering some snacks to share. Asside from the painfully loud live music which eliminates the possibility of being able to hold a conversation, this place can cook up some good drinks and some interesting ethnic food. Their Paella is great! They're a bit pricey, but not extreme.

I joined Citisearch so that I could share my experience at this dump. If you're looking for a food review, move one. After passing the place many times, I decided to bring my girlfriend. After showing up at 8 pm for an 8pm reservation, I was told that it would be about 15 minutes until my table was ready. Fine. About 30 minutes later and no movement detected, I asked the hostess again when I would be seated and she said, I swear to god, "I really don't know." I asked her what happened to her 15 minute estimate and she said "I don't know." I despise places that are busy, so they feel entitled to treat people as cattle and this is clearly one of those places. Do ME a favor and don't give these amateurs a dime. Thanks.

It is not a Cuban Restaurant. For those that do not know what Cuban food taste like it can be o.k. for them. I am of Cuban decent and my mom's cooking puts "Azucar" food to shame. They have an Italian chef tryig to make Cuban food. Service is horrible. Waiters take your order and you don't get your food for at least 1 hour so you can prchase drinks. Food comes out cold instead of hot from the kitchen. The only good thing in this restaurnat is teh little band thy have playing which makes teh whole reataurant. So those amatuers that rated this so high need to recognize! This is an Argentian run restaurant not Cuban run! Nice decor poor food poor service.

The food is pretty good, but the mojitos were stellar--I drank watermelon martinis like they were fruit punch all night long. There were lots of large groups in the restaurant, and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Ask for a table downstairs if you don't want a very loud Cuban band in your ear all night. The vaca frita and empanadas were the best. Overall, a fun, festive place.

I went here for my birthday and had a wonderful time. They serve the best Mango Mojito I have every tasted. The Lobster tail in the pepper sauce was very good. My friend had the seafood cassrole which he loved. The atmosphere, the decor and ambience just makes you want to go to Havanna. Highly recommended.

Being Cuban, I wanted to find a Cuban place where I could feel at home and I did! I went with some of my college girlfriends for the first time tonight and it was probably the best time I've had in the city. The food was great (try the ropa vieja!) and the people were great. The music was definitely the highlight of the night though (go around 9pm). The live music makes you want to get up and dance and everybody did! That is what I love about being Cuban. It's all about having a good time. It does get really hot since the place is so small, but it didn't matter. Everybody is there to enjoy themselves. I HIGHLY recommend going there with friends if you want to eat great food, laugh, and dance. Cuban people are the best and Azucar gets an A+ in my book!

I just had dinner here last night with a group of four. The food was "okay" nothing spectacular. I got the salmon with sugar cane glaze but it was more like sugar cane syrup. VERY sweet! If you get this dish i recommend asking for the "glaze" on the side. Its just way too sweet and it saturates the rice. The appetizers were so so. The only one we had worth mentioning is the skewers. The other 2 appetizers we ordered were forgetable. However, the chocolate cake dessert is worth getting. mmmm! Oh and the white wine sangria was also very tasty albeit a little on the "weak" side. And the best advice of all: if you want to have a conversation, i suggest you get there before 8:30 b/c once the band starts playing (who are excellent), it is so loud you have to SHOUT! to be heard.

We went there with my colleagues for lunch. I'm relatively new to Cuban food so I liked my seafood platter although my Cuban colleague complained about her dish. In a few days I came back with my wife for dinner (no reservation needed) and ordered her the same platter as I had last time. It was different although it looked the same! Clams where replaced with fried plantains, most of fried shrimp was gone etc. Now it was just bad for the price. My "ropa vieja" was very average too. I think they are getting away with things like this just because of 8th avenue location and the loud cuban music they play at the bar upfront.

Ok, if you are spanish I will tell you the apetizers are great but the actual main course meals are bland. Not tasty at all. The drinks are good, the service alright. Very small and crowded, been to much better places for the money. I had reservations so I was seated fast. I recommended reservations. I won't say don't go there because I believe you should always try a place a least once but the place is over rated.

I had a good time there... the food was pretty good, but not the best Cuban I've had in NYC (maybe I didn't order the right dish). I liked the fact that they served black beans with your meal. The flan was amazing, I probably could have had 4 slices. I only wish they wouldn't have seated our "large party" of 6 all the way in the far corner of the restaurant. We were all the way in the back, in the corner, right by the bathroom and kitchen. I felt trapped in my seat.

In the summers word on the street is that they've got a guy rolling 'cubans' out front but since it's fall I guess he's back in the home land.

Food here was very tastey and pretty authentic. The sangria pitchers (26) were pretty spiked but there wasn't that much fruit in the bunch of it. On the weekends make sure you make reservations and try to sit in the back as they have live music up front which will make it difficult to hear people.

heard the music from outside and popped in with a friend. Didn't expect anything but the food was spectacular. They got it all right, from the rice to the beans to the fish and meat. Quality and very fair prices. Will be going back this spot whenever I'm in the neighborhood

I absolutely loved the place!! The drinks were amazing, and the food was very good as well. Went here on Saturday night before a show, my boyfriend loved it as well. It's a relatively small place and was completely packed, which is interesting considering there are a lot of restaurants that are completely empty near by. I would absolutely go here again!! I have only had cuban food twice before at Victors which I thought was good, but this place is definitely better!

Went there on Saturday night and it was quite busy and loud. The service was OK, but the food was a disappointment. Pretty bland on the whole but both our appetizer and some side dishes came out cold, not heated all the way through at all. Maybe it was just a bad night...

I just disagree with some people that go to Azucar, and expect to be treated like in a 5 stars restaurant, it is another kind, good food, drinks, and service. I had excellent communication with the waiters (very cool people). But it's more the kind of restaurant that you go to have fun, enjoy with friends, or girlfriend, but if you don't have sense of humor, really want to have a good time, enjoy your time in there, then this one might not be the kind of restaurant for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND ENJOYABLE!!!!

The food tastes as good as the one that came from my grandmothers kitchen.
The Tamal and Ropa Vieja -- my favorite dish here.
The authentic cuban desserts reminicent of my childhood especially the vanialla custard.
Too bad the waitstaff new nothing of the little island. ( this restaurant is run by argentians)

My husband and I came here for his brithday and I have to say, we had a great time. The service was outstanding and the MOJITOS are excellent (I recommend the Coconut Mojito the best). Our entrees were very well seasoned and prepared to perfection. We did try the traditional cuban dessert, but I would recommend passing on that unless you like bread drenched in syrup (very sweet) and covered in cinnamon. [There are many other selections on the dessert menu].

But overall this was a great experience. And just an FYI...the hand-solled cigars are worth the trip all in itself. They are VERY smooth.
