Greenwich Village's bustling West 4th Street is home to an authentic new tapas bar called Las Ramblas. It is named for a famous pedestrian street in Barcelona, Spain. Las Ramblas at 170 West 4th Street, is b/t Jones & Cornelia Streets & near 6th Avenue in NYC. Compact & inviting with its carefully restored brick walls, Las Ramblas is a haven for tapas aficionados. Executive Chef Fernando Echeverri of Pamplona, Spain, puts out a variety of tapas in addition to special dishes of the day. A carefully selected list of fine wines from Spain's outstanding regions is served by the glass & the bottle. For Sangria lovers, the drink comes three ways, each in a tall, chilled glass or a pitcher & topped with a different fruit. For an authentic Tapas experience, Las Ramblas is open daily from 4pm-1am except Friday & Saturday from 4pm-2am. Join us for our Monday Night Spanish Wine Flights

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
The Las Ramblas street sign outside the 28-person space refers to the famous street in Barcelona, and the tapas here are more economical than a plane ticket. A friendly staff guides small groups of diners to the day's specials and tapas bar favorites. Exposed brick, a copper bar, a trickling waterfall--all enliven the tapas-sized space.

The Food
It's hard to go wrong. A base of cured olives and crisp patatas bravas lead to a bubbling order of shrimp in garlic, white wine and lemon--a dish whose sauce demands an extra round of bread for the table. The party starts as dishes accumulate: crisped garlic-hued meatballs, addictive fried calamari, warm mini ham sandwiches. Don't miss the unique tuna mojama, smoke-cured so it resembles tuna-jerky; go further down this road with a plate of Spanish meats that move from gamey chorizo to spicy jamon.

Key Points

  • Winter Wine Flights

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Sangria comes three ways--red pear, white peach and sparkling strawberry--but the draw is the all-Spanish wine list. For something different, try the Txacoli ($35 per bottle), a traditional effervescent wine from the Basque region.

Great Tapas and Cozy Atmosphere

by A S. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 429

The staff at Las Ramblas is great and this truly is one of the best tapas and sangria places in the city. On a great night when the windows are open and the restaurant is exposed to the street you truly feel like you're in Barcelona. The venue is small and they don't take reservations so if you're a large group I would plan on arriving early. A group of two could easily enjoy a great meal at the bar

Great Tapas Spot!

by NYCjax7

Rarely my boyfriend get time to go out as we both work such crazy schedules. This place was amazing and made our 'date night' that much more enjoyable. The food was excellent, the wine list - amazing and I can't say enough about the service. Our waiter was extremely attentive and considerate.

We will definitely be back! Thanks Las Ramblas!

Pros: Good atmosphere, friendly service, good food

Can't Get Enough!!!!

by CSMobileUser

If your traveling to NYC, or live there and are looking a new place to eat.....Las Ramblas should NOT be missed. From their friendly/proffesional service to their AMAZING tappas you would be hard pressed not to enjoy yourselves......Out Door tables are a must if you enjoy people watching (best in the city)....If your their with friends try a Porron (Spanish drinking device, very fun) and if your not that great with wine, they have that covered too....with an in-house expert.....I give this place 5 stars easy....the food is always consistantly awesome, and the atmosphere is cozy and cool....perfect for a date or family and friends

Tiny place! Tiny portions.

by violette06

Can't say it was bad overall, but the space is so tiny, it was hard to enjoy it. I am a small person, but was afraid to move my elbow so that I don't move my neighbor's plate. Sangria felt like it had no alcohol, but it was tasty (strawberry one) Service was very pleasant.

Pros: Food taste, sangria, service, location

Cons: tiny space, tiny portions,

Love this place

by Moni112

I have been here many times and always take out of towners. The management /waitstaff is wonderful; the food is delicious and great portions for tapas; the sangria is yummy and I always leave with a nice buzz. I went last night with2 girlfriends and it was $30pp and we had 2 pitchers of sangria and 4 tapas; which I think is just fine because the whole experience is great. I hate to sound so corny but I think it's very New York.

Pros: everything

Cons: none

Salivate

by Mati

I eat at Ramblas whenever i can.
Trouble is i'm in Africa.
But i do dream about the food and wake up drooling on my pillow. They do everything they possibly can to please every customer, and it works. The service is impeccable, the food is delightful, and wine is heavenly, and the place is cozy like home. They even greet you by name if you've been there more than twice. Try the Pago del Vicario if you like red wine, and don't miss the gambas.
enjoy.

GREAT FOOD AND EXPERIENCE

by overhere718

I went to eat here last night on a first date. The staff here was incredible. There was a 40 minute wait so they gave us beeper type contraption and we headed down the block to have a drink. The wait was'nt 40 minutes and when we sat down the wait staff made us feel like regulars that dine there 4 times a week. They suggested an unbelievable white wine. The ham croquettes i highly suggest. I was shocked when i got the bill. I would have had no problem paying 5 times what we did because the food , atmosphere and, the staff were incredible. I am definitely going back to this place as soon as i get the chance.

Pros: Wait staff

Cons: none

This restaurant is always consistent. They never seem to miss. Tapas are delicious, waitstaff are always polite, atmosphere is not pretentious. Try the ham croquettes, , Tuna al Mojama and Chanquetes Fritos. Oh, wow, and don't forget to have a pitcher of their sangria!

Fun Tapas Bar!

by holly1987

I had a great time at Las Ramblas. I went there with two friends on a Friday night and we were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The servers were very attentive, answered all our questions, and made good recommendations. The food was delicious, reasonably priced, and well-portioned. Other reviewers have said that the portions are stingy, but I strongly disagree--either they forgot they were ordering small plates or they are linebackers. The only complaint I have is that the place is very tiny and cramped, but that really didn't bother me until an obnoxious NYU kid sat right behind us and starting arguing with his girlfriend very loudly. I left with a full stomach, a good buzz, and a high opinion. Definitely check this place out, maybe on a weeknight when it's not so crowded.

Pros: Great service, great food

Cons: Tiny--not a lot of wiggle room

Excellent Dining Experience

by 2VillageGirls

We had a great time at Las Ramblas. The food was great. We had the roasted pumpkin with shrimp in a cream sauce and the chicken empanadas. To drink, we had the cava, a spanish form of champagne. The food was well prepared and very well balanced between texture and spice. The barkeep is a certified sommollier and very well positioned to introduce and recommend their spanish collection. He peaked our interest when he told us that they change the wine list every 2 months. This is a well-run establishment with a good sense of customer service. Definitely a keeper.

This may be our new favorite tapas place

by veggie2001

We did a girlie dinner here. We walked in on a Tuesday night a little before 8, and were immediately sat. We ordered pom sangria (a little fruit-punchy), mushrooms, patatas bravas, mussels, octopus and meatballs. We also got a special artichoke salad. Everything was good, with the meatballs and potatoes just being average. The mussel sauce was great and the vinegary salad dressing contrasted nicely with the rest of the richer food. The service was attentive, our water glasses were always full. It seemed a good value, we were full for $12/pp. Our only complaint was that we asked for the food to come out staggared, but everthing came out in pretty quick succession. We will definitely go back, as there is so much more to try, including what look like some decent values on the wine list.

Pros: food, service, value

Cons: not good for large groups

Amazing Tapas and Service!!!

by Irish82

We went here this past weekend to kick off our friend's Bachelorette party. Upon arriving, we were seated in the front on comfy benches near the open windows, which allowed us to enjoy the late afternoon breeze. Our servers were knowledgable, friendly, and our cups always full. We ordered almost one of everything on the menu, and it was all delicious. There were seven of us with very different tastes, so tapas was the perfect way to try a bit of everything. I highly recommend their signature shrimp tapa, so delicious and we couldn't stop dipping their fresh bread, which we never ran low on, in the amazing broth (garlicky, peppery, yummy!). Their sangria was just as delicious as the tapas, and at the end they brought us a "porro" which is a communal wine decanter that you pass around and was the perfect and entertaining cap to a wonderful meal. I think we all though that dinner would just be the beginning of an evening to send our friend off to the married life in style, but it wound up being the highlight of the night and we were all still talking about it the next day. Delicous food, a WONDERFUL wait staff, and great friends made for the perfect start to our night. Thank you so much to the entire staff of Las Ramblas for a great night!

Pros: Great selection, excellent service

Cons: Small, get there early for the best seats!

Best Tapas in the City!

by yimk

I am a fan of Spanish tapas, and I must say that after tasting just about everywhere else, Las Ramblas has the best tapas I've found in NYC. Everyone working there was so nice and helpful. I loved it and want to come back to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. And do ask about the all Spanish wines as they seem to really know what they're talking about. Great stuff!

Pros: Great food, excellent wines, awesome service.

Cons: They don't deliver to the Upper East Side...lol.

Best Tapas, Best Value

by garrett783

I love dining throughout NYC and by far, Las Ramblas is my pick for best authentic Spanish Tapas in NYC. The Tortilla Espanola is to die for. And the Patatas Bravas are perfectly spicy; they're addictive! They offer a Gazpacho soup during the summer that is made from tomatoe and cucumbers, amazing. Then there are the wines! While many rave over the sangria, it's all about the Spanish wines for me. Ask any server to suggest something interesting and you're bound to fall in love with yet another Spanish wine region. I'm currently high on the Txocoli wines from the Basque region which are somewhat "frizzante". The only thing better than the tapas and wines is the service. It's probably the hallmark feature that makes Las Ramblas so popular with its regulars. Keep in mind, Las Ramblas is not large; it's acutally quite small and they do not take reservations. But there are so many reasons why its often crowded. It's worth the wait.

Pros: Great Service, Amazing Food

Cons: Wish it was bigger

Disappointing

by amandamor

Way, and I mean way too crowded. Very small tables and very cramped. They couldn't fit all our food in the small table. The food was not good. You get so little for the money you spend. Needless to say the main course dish should've been advertised as an appetizer instead. The food was nothing special. Now the service. They kept giving our food to wrong table, and we had to let them know that that was our dish. It was not just a one time thing, it was constant. We dine out A LOT, and this was the most subpar service we've ever encountered, with mediocre food to boot.

Pros: N/A

Cons: Food and Service

the foods good...the people better

by greg31

We were meeting friends at this "top tapas" place (as listed on citysearch). having never been there, we thought that the small dining room would be cozy and add ambiance. We called on the way and was greated by a very warm and nice woman. upon arriving, we found this place to be amazingly small. Pictures can not convey it, but they somehow fit 25+ people in this place...all very happy to be there. The staff is VERY warm and the food wonderful.

I was told that during the week, it was much less crowded and would recommend this... although i've never been in a such a tight room of happy hungry people... i'll definitely be back... thanks for a great meal.

Great!

Las Ramblas i one of my favorite places. The food is amazing (try chanquettes, octopus salad, cheese plate is a MUST) and the wine selection is outstanding. The staff is energetic, friendly and knows their wine. They always come up with special events and different ideas of how to serve their wine and food (like wine flights or specials for different occasions). Deffinitely recommend this place to everyone! It's always packed and they don't accept reservations, so try your luck by being there early.

Pros: friendly and informative service, great food and wine selection

Cons: place is tiny, sometimes too crowded

Great Tapas

by SJOM01

It was a Saturday night, we were walking by and we never had tapas before. It was unbelievably busy and we were reading the menu when one of the servers came out and asked if we wanted a table.... It was a 30 minute wait but we could a get a drink at one of the restaurants next door. We did and received a beeper. When our table was available, they brought our drink next door and the feast began. Wild Boar was one of the specials and was amazing! Our 2 favorites were the wild mushrooms and the cheese and Serrano ham tapas. Service was excellent.. Only downside is how close you are to other diners. The first couple we sat next to were very boring, but the 3 people who came in after them were fun people. We cannot wait to come to the Village agaIn and eat there!

Pros: GREAT FOOD, SERVICE

Cons: TOO CLOSE TO DINERS, LOUD

We live nearby and have been regulars since the beginning. Spectacular Tapas, great Spanish wine list, and welcoming service from Natalie and her staff. On the site of The Bagel, a venerable Greenwich Village hole-in-the-wall, the joint is tiny, but worth returning to if it's too crowded the first time.

Pros: Best Tapas in New York

Cons: So good it's often crowded. Ah, success.

Authentic Tapas Bar in Greenwich Village

by garrett66

My friend and I love people watching in Greenwich Village. And we just found the best place to do it! Las Ramblas Tapas Bar is on W. 4th Street near 6th Avenue. It's a small place, but "oh, so authentic"! We felt like we were in Barcelona, Spain. The garlic shrimp was delicious, and came sizzling from the kitchen. The Chorizo con Alubias, which combined chorizo and white beans, also was presented sizzling at the table. The cured meats were fantastic, especially the Serrano ham. Our favorite dish was Spanish Tuna dish. It had unbelievable flavor and was seasoned perfectly. We shared a pitcher of Red Pear Sangria. We didn't think it was very strong when we were drinking it, but when we got up to leave we both felt a bit tipsy. The Sangria was a great companion to the tapas we had. Service was excellent. We picked the tapas we did after having a nice conversation with our server, who was as friendly as she was knowledgeable. I definitely recommend this place for people who love to have many great tasting dishes all in one meal! And if you people watch, the location is a super bonus.

Pros: Great Food, Awesome Sangria, Perfect People Watching Spot

Cons: Sits only 30 people.

Please - stay away!

by pirate187

Please stay away from Las Ramblas because I love it! If you go, I won't be able to get a table! Food was great and having been to Spain and more specifically it's namesake "Las Ramblas" in Barcelona, I found it truly authentic. I sampled about 4 tapas and all were very tasty, fair priced and decent portions. Some really nice Spanish wines too. And while I didn't have one, the draft beers looked very fresh and tasty. The place is very cozy, and I do mean cozy, but it kind of added to the fun. And I have to say, for a place that tiny, they did not rush you whatsoever - now that's authentic Spain! And, as mentioned in other reviews, I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the staff. The bartender and two servers I interacted with were fantastic! They were kind and efficient to say the least. Upon leaving I got a hardy and sincere thank you from all of them. I will be back for sure!

Pros: True Tapas

Cons: Tiny and tight

A taste of Barcelona

by mr_meursault

This place is pretty similar to a random little eatery in Barcelona. The tapas are of very good quality and so is the Sangria. Just like in Spain, of course, the sangria has much more ice than fruit, but it tastes pleasant nonetheless. I would recommend the shrimp. The sardines are tasty but very bony. The prices are reasonable, but don't come too hungry. This is really a bar with excellent bar food.

Excellent tapas with even better service

by elleboogie10

If tapas and sangria are your thing, then you must visit Las Ramblas. The food is amazing, so flavorful. The portions are great for tapas, and the service cannot be topped. The host apologized for the wait to be seated, and we only had to wait five minutes. This is a great tapas experience, with unpretentious service from servers who never lose their cool, even as the restaurant heats up. I've tried great tapas places, like Euzkadi, Pipa and Azafran, but this definitely tops them all.

Pros: great food, service and value

Cons: very small, not good for groups

Perfect date spot

by asutton01

Las Ramblas is fantastic. It's a little shocking how small it is, but in the end, that was the best part! I came here on a date and had a fabulous time. It was easy to talk, the wait staff was very attentive, and they have an incredible Spanish wine list. I get so tired of the pretensious, over-priced and loud, trendy restaurants in the city. Simply addicted to this place

by mariag124

Las Ramblas is such an amazing spot. Not only is the food out of this world, but the service is amazing, wine list inspired, and ambience super cozy. Yes, it's tiny, but they have truly made the most of the tight quarters. Admittedly, it?s not great for large groups unless you?re prepared to wait, but it is very romantic and warm. Instead of bringing the entire high school reunion, make this a regular date spot. :) I've been back countless times (almost embarrassing how often I'm there), and I've never been disappointed. Anyone who doubts the authenticity of the cuisine has clearly only visited the tourist traps while abroad. The fried smelts are the best I've had anywhere, the tortilla is also better than most places in Madrid, and I simply can?t leave without having the Patatas Bravas. Not to say that the other menu items play second fiddle to these; everything is equally delicious! The specials are amazing; the chef colors outside the lines a bit with creative ingredients (like a whole baby pumpkin filled with perfectly prepared shrimp in a lemon cream sauce? too good for words), but he always seems to incorporate the authentic Spanish flavors we?re all seeking. The wine list is as impressive as it is reasonable and despite that fact that I can only seem to find a handful of Cavas in wine shops around the city, Las Ramblas has a selection of three which I?ve not seen anywhere else. Ok, so clearly I can go on and on, but bottom line, I love this place!

Pros: Food, wine list, service, ambience

Cons: small, but can also be a pro

A great idea for a date you wish to get to know better.

by red_ear_slider

Wonderful place for a date. We found that if you go early, you can miss the crowds that roll in around 8:00pm. Food is very good (and filling) and they have a good wine list and tap beer selection. We never felt rushed, even when the place was filling up. Staff is friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and anticipates needs very quickly. I felt they were a little too attentive as they were always lingering around waiting to do something, probably due to the very small space. The seating is so-so, the best seats are in front of the windows, comfortably on pillows, otherwise be prepared to sit on high barstools at small, circular tables. Definitely not a place for groups over 4 (and 4 is pushing it). The proprietress is very sweet, charming and unassuming. Prices are fair, considering the neighborhood. Will definitely be around when all the other "hot" places burn out. If they could only have a little more room!!

Pros: Staff, Decor, Food, Wine & Beer list

Cons: Size, Hovering Service, Seating

Amazing flavors, lots to offer!

by beenzers5

This tiny restaurant is located on a street full of fun bars and shops. Although it's small in size, the offerings and flavors that this restaurant provides is anything but small. A very good wine list with a great range of price, regions and grapes. The tapas were delicious. My boyfriend and I shared 4 tapas and a bottle of wine and were pleasantly full but not overly stuffed. We had a stuffed artichoke special, stuffed pepper, albondigas and chicken empanadas. Each dish was extremely flavorful and the portions were perfect. My only complaint is the tight quarters... it's bareable though.

Pros: Awesome service, tons of flavor, fun location

Cons: Tight quarters

Authentic, Spicy Tapas

by Chapaev

The tapas were great. Nothing too outlandish or 'gourmet', just really authentic, home-style Spanish food. Shrimp with garlic, scallops, meatballs..were all very flavorfull and done just right. The potatoes were good but didn't stand out. Loved the tiny, almost cramped but still comfortable, space. The only problem I had with Las Ramblas was the Sangria..it tasted like Fruit Juice and after 2 pitchers were only barely tipsy (which again proved that it was mostly Fruit Juice).
The wine list is great though!

Pros: Food, Ambience, Wine List

Cons: Sangria

As other users have noted, the restaurant is very small, so expect to wait to get a table, and I wouldn't advise showing up with more than 4 people. I had read the reviews and was expecting to wait, so I was not put off at all by the 25 minutes it took us to get a table. We drank at the bar and they carried over our tab to the table without hesitation, which I thought was nice. There is a pretty eclectic offering with seafood, meats and vegetables all available. We ordered 6 tapas plates and all of them were very good. The seafood dishes in particular were all excellent. One thing to note, the sangria was very tasty, but did not seem to have much alcohol in it.

Pros: good food, good atmosphere

Cons: tiny, could seem cramped if you're not prepared

Most authentic tapas experience in NYC...friendly and attentive service too.

I decided to try Las Ramblas after reading their review in the 'Under $25' dining section of The NY Times. I must say, my visit exceeded my great expectations. With a wide array of food and wine, cozy atmosphere and warm, friendly customer service, Las Ramblas is on the fast track to becoming the hottest tapas bar in NYC.

Not the real deal, not even close

by toptocque

I suppose this food passes for real tapas for most American customers but any self-respecting Spaniard would certainly turn their noses up at this mess. The potatoes and omelette were sadly lacking and disappointing, the Sangria lacked the proper amount of alcohol and the finishing touch of brandy. Shrimp in garlic sauce was just that with nothing at all to distinguish it; this place is SO overrated I can't believe it. The chef must have just come from a short order diner as there is no originality here whatsoever.

Fantastic Sangria

by starrmsu

Joined some friends for a birthday party here, and although it is not the best space for groups, they did a great job accomodating about 15 or so people coming and going throughout the evening. I was impressed with their flexibility. Delicious tapas (generous portions no less), out of this world sangria and fabulous service. So glad the birthday girl introduced this place to me - I can't wait to introduce it to others!

Pros: Great sangria, lovely space, delicious food

Cons: Too small for groups, noisy corner
